File compression Using Compression Software for Large Files and Folders

Do you wish to compress files so that it can transfer easily between storage devices, or when you want to upload it to an email or how about when you just want to save precious hard drive space when storing files.Well, now you can just do that.

WinRAR is a powerful archive manager. It can backup your data and reduce size of email attachments, decompress RAR, ZIP and other files downloaded from Internet and create new archives in RAR and ZIP file format.

When creating a new archive, you first need to select the archive format. ZIP is preferable when you are not sure that a receiver of your archive has WinRAR. Otherwise just select RAR, since it provides more options and higher compression.

There are six compression methods supported: "Store", "Fastest", "Fast", " Normal", "Good" and "Best". The Best method provides high, but slow compression. Fastest method compresses poorly, but it is very fast.

Store method just merges files into an archive without any compression. If you want to create an archive for distribution or for long storage, It would be best to probably ignore the time constraint and choose the Best compression method to reduce the size as much as possible. But for daily backups choose Normal compression method.

At the bottom there is a Tab saying “Split to Volume, Bytes” In the box enter a figure or you can use the drop down menu to make your choice. Remember you have to enter the value in bytes, kilobytes or megabytes and this applies only to .rar extension. (1024 KB equals 1 MB) In the example below, I have chosen 98078 KB which comes to around 95.77 MB.

When you have chosen the right options for your archive, click the OK button.(In my example below, the video file I had chosen was compressed into three parts comprising of 95.7 MB each)

Disk managementDisk Management is an extension of the Microsoft Management Console that allows full management of the disk-based hardware recognized by Windows.

Disk Management Used

Disk Management is used to manage the drives installed in a computer - like hard disk driver (internal and external), optical disk driver, and flash driver. Disk Management can be used to partition drives, format drives, assign drive letters, and much more.

Access Disk Management

You'll need to open the Disk Management tool if you want to partition a hard drive, format a hard drive, change a drive letter, or perform various other disk related tasks. However, as you might have already realized, Disk Management is not located among the other programs in your Start Menu. This is because Disk Management isn't a program in the same way other software on your computer is.

How To Use Disk Management

Disk Management has two main sections - a top and a bottom:

The bottom section of Disk Management contains a graphical representation of the physical drives installed in the computer.

The top section of Disk Management contains a list of all the partitions, formatted or not, that Windows recognizes.

• Resize a Partition - Extending & ShrinkingYou can shrink or expand NTFS and FAT16/FAT32

partitions, as long as there is free (unpartitioned) space immediately before or after the partition you're trying to modify. Expanding a partition does not require formatting.

To do this, right-click or tap and hold the partition and select "Extend Volume". This will open the "Extend Volume Wizard". In this example, I want to expand the size of my Stuff partition.

Disk management Click next, and the wizard will show you how much

space is available for adding to the current partition. In this example, there is about 135GB of space next to the partition, but I only want to use 50GB of this to make the total size of the partition about 100GB.

Disk management Click or tap Next to see a brief summary of the change

and then click or tap again Finish to apply them. You'll be brought back to the

Disk Management utility, where you'll see that the size of the Stuff partition is now about 100GB.

Disk management In many cases, you can also shrink a partition.Right-click or tap and hold the partition and select "Shrink volume". The below box may come up for several minutes while Windows examines the hard drive to determine whether the volume can be shrunk, and how much disk space can be shaved off.Once this is complete, the wizard will ask how much space you want to take off the partition. In this example, I'm removing 20GB off the100GB partition so it ends up at about 80GB

Disk management Disk Management, partitions, Windows 7, Windows 8 Click Shrink, and you'll be brought back to the Disk

Management utility where you will see that your partition is now smaller, and the extra space has been made available.
