After graduating magna cum laude from Amherst College, he received his medical degree from Weill Cornell Medical College. Dr. Belkin is actively involved in clinical research and teaching and is an Assitant Attending in Dermatology at the NYU School of Medicine.

AESTHETIC TREATMENTS FOR MEN

Though some men might think aesthetic procedures have nothing to do with them, they may want to reconsider. Over the years, men have become much more open to dermatologic self-improvement. Youth, freshness, and masculinity are prized in both the social sphere and the workplace. But not everyone who offers laser or injectable treatments (Botox/filler) are knowledgeable about the differences between men and women. Our physicians have special expertise in this area and know how to use our tools to masculinize rather than feminize. Men tend to want more natural, subtle, and noninvasive improvements. One of our most popular treatments for men is clearing the face of rough and scaly sun damage and brown sun spots. Eliminating these obvious signs of age can go a long way to making one look and feel refreshed. Oth-er treatments popular for men include hair removal, such as on the shoulders and back, procedures to reduce excessive sweating, reduc-tion of facial redness and broken blood vessels, reduction of wrinkles and restoration of volume in the face, treatment of acne scarring, and treatment for excessive oil glands.

WHO IS HOLDING THE LASER AND SYRINGE ? The highly qualified physicians at LSSCNY perform all procedures in-cluding Botox, fillers, lasers and related technologies. We strongly be-lieve that our patients deserve the very best care and we take these procedures seriously. Consequently, it is our policy not to delegate cos-metic and medical procedures to non physicians, which is becoming increasingly common across the country. Access to the best technolo-gy along with our physicians’ specialized training and extensive experi-ence has served our patients well for many years. We understand the subtleties and proper techniques required to obtain the optimal out-come which are often times not appreciated by those with less training or experience.

There has been a proliferation of spas, salons and “laser centers” that offer unsubstantiated laser treatments and injectables often times out-side of the legal scope of practice of those performing the procedures. We are seeing more and more patients requiring corrective work after treatment by those less qualified. Caution should be exercised by the unsuspecting public when considering treatment by those with ques-tionable qualifications and experience.

SCAR MANAGEMENT

The treatment of scars is a very big part of our practice. We specialize in the use of lasers and related technologies for discolored, elevated, depressed scars from surgery, cosmetic surgery , acne and trauma. The options for scar treatment continue to get better and better with the latest technology. We have ablative and non-ablative options that offer varying degrees of recovery, and treatments can be tailored to meet the needs of all skin and scar types. We often mix and match lasers based on characteristics of the scar. Our philosophy is that early intervention can maximize the degree of success of the treatment.

SILHOUETTE INSTALIFT SUTURE LIFT

Have you noticed your lower cheeks starting to fall below the jawline? Are your smile folds deepening? Many women and men start to notice the descent of their face in their 40s to 50s but they are not ready to consider having a facelift. Instalift is an FDA cleared treatment that can be performed in the office setting and takes less than one hour. The results are long-lasting and patients are happy with the results. ?

TATTOOS

Are you getting married and can’t wear your hair up because of the turtle on the back of your neck? Are you still staring at your ex-girl-friend’s name on your arm? Our physicians remain at the forefront of laser tattoo removal, offering the latest technologies and techniques. In addition to standard “Q-switched” devices such as the Ruby and Nd:YAG lasers, we have multiple picosecond lasers with three available wavelengths in our practice, specifically the PicoSure 532nm, 755nm, and 1064nm – allowing for safe and effective treatment of tattoos of all colors.

Our Center was also amongst the first in the world to work with and publish research evaluating the use of perfluorodecalin (PFD) in tat-too removal, and has since contributed to the creation of the DeScribe patch. This patch is the first and only of its kind that allows for multi-ple laser treatments in one office visit. We continue to find innovative ways to treat tattoos of the eyebrow, lip liner, as well as tattoos of more challenging colors, such as white or tan. In addition, we continue to conduct groundbreaking research in this area, regularly publishing and presenting around the world on the topic.

SCITON HALO

We are thrilled to offer the exciting hybrid fractional Sciton HALO laser at our center. The HALO offers many advanced benefits including both non-ablative and ablative resurfacing available in a single treatment ses-sion. This means that you can get a deeper but less aggressive fractional laser treatment combined with precisely focused superficial ablative resurfacing, which allows for faster healing times and less downtime while achieving significant changes with a single session. The HALO treatment cools the skin directly during treatment, so in addition to our in-office skin preparation beforehand, the entire procedure is quite comfortable. Downtime is about 2 days of pinkness followed by a week of dry peeling as your skin rejuvenates itself. New collagen formation kicks in several weeks after the procedure and improvement continues to increase over the next several months.

LASER TREATMENT OF AGING SKINLEG VEINS

Did you notice any unsightly veins on your legs this past summer? If so, fall is a great time to get them treated so you are ready to bare your legs next summer. Veins on the legs can present as spider veins (small pink veins that look like spiders) or as varicose veins (blue/green veins that can be felt and seen).

The treatment of spider veins is considered cosmetic and most patients will need at least a few treatments to see results. Larger veins with symptoms of aching, cramping, pain and swelling can be associated with a medical condition called venous insufficiency. Our office screens pa-tients to see if you have this medical problem using an ultrasound, a painless procedure. Once identified, venous insufficiency can be treat-ed with a laser.

The cooler weather is the best time to treat as the use of compression stockings after each treatment is recommended as well as sun avoid-ance.

NO DOWN TIME REJUVENATION

For those seeking a gentle introduction to laser treatments but look-ing for overall rejuvenation with downtime limited to redness in most cases, the PicoSure and Laser Genesis lasers fill niche perfectly. These lasers smooth skin texture, reduce redness, shrink pores, and stimu-lates new collagen and elastin formation, all without visible injury to the skin. The treatment is so gentle that there are minimal anesthetic requirements, and it takes about 15 minutes. We recommend a series of treatments two to four weeks apart, followed by one to two main-tenance treatments per year, but each plan can be customized based upon individual needs.

NAIL HEALTH

Our dermatologists and dermatologic surgeons are trained not only to recognize and treat disorders of the skin and hair but also of the nails. Though the nails may seem like a small part of the body, those who have had issues know that nail disorders can be quite problematic. Several of our physicians specialize in treating the nails, both medically and surgi-cally. Some signs for which you may wish to schedule a visit are brown or red streaks, green or yellow discoloration, pain around the nail, lifting of the nail, crumbling of the nail, and grooves or pits in the nail. We may use topical medications, oral medications, laser treatments, or surgical treatments such as removing or biopsying part of the nail unit. Nail pro-cedures can be done painlessly with the use of nerve blocks.

INJECTABLES & FILLER UPDATE

We are passionate about the artful method of restoration using injec-tions, not just because we are one of the largest users of toxins and fillers in the world, but because we are pioneers in the field. We have been part of numerous clinical trials with the manufacturers of Botox and fillers that have led to FDA approval and new uses of their science. Cosmetic injections do so much more than fix a line or fill a crease. At our Center we think broadly about how the overall face changes with age. By addressing these changes, we not only fix lines and creases, but restore a natural, rejuvenated version of you which results in safer treatments and prevents overdone and unnatural appearances. Fillers are not intended to make you look full, but instead to contour the face for a normal-looking appearance and to restore volume. Toxins (Botox, Dysport, Xeomin) should not freeze your appearance, but instead soften the excessive lines that make you look older and stressed. Our depth of resources gives us everything available to our patients, including Juvederm, Voluma, Restylane, Restylane Lyft, Restylane Silk, Belotero, Radiesse, Sculptra, Botox Cosmetic, Dysport, and Xeomin. We also use the newest fillers: Volbella offers a soft, subtle filler for the lips and lines around them. Vollure offers a longer lasting solution for nasolabial folds and marionette lines. Restylane Refyne and Defyne offer marked flexi-bility for areas of motion. At your consultation we assist in finding the best solution for you.

PLATELET RICH PLASMA

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is non-surgical treatment for hair loss and skin rejuvenation. It utilizes the body’s platelets to stimulate healing in treat-ed areas. Our platelets store a rich supply of growth factors. When ac-tivated, platelets release these growth factors that have the potential to restore many types of tissue. Many medical specialties have found ap-plications for this treatment, particularly in injured muscles and joints. In dermatology and cosmetic surgery, PRP has found success in hair res-toration and collagen stimulation for skin rejuvenation. PRP is safe and as it is made of your own body cells, causes virtually no risk of rejection or reaction. Platelet-Rich Plasma Therapy takes less than an hour. The patient’s blood is drawn and placed in a centrifuge for 6-10 minutes to separate out the platelets. It is then injected into the desired treatment area to harness the body’s own healing properties.

The Laser & Skin Surgery Center of New York has a full time, on-site research division that is devoted to reshaping the landscape of derma-tologic and laser surgery. Results from our studies have been widely pre-sented and published on a national and international scale.

We are gearing up for an exciting fall and winter season and are looking for volunteers interested in the treatment of:

• Acne • Rosacea • Cellulite • Scars • Wrinkles • Sun damage • Skin laxity

Our success would not be possible without the high level of participa-tion by our patients and volunteers. If you are interested in participating in our research program, please call the Research Department at (212) 686-7306 or visit our website at www.laserskinsurgery.com/Clinical-Trials

WHAT’S NEW IN THE HAMPTONS?

The Laser & Skin Surgery Center of New York’s year-round, full-service Southampton facility is celebrating its 7th year. Our Southampton office, staffed full-time by Dr Elliot Weiss and weekly by Dr Dana Stern, offers the most cutting edge dermatologic and aesthetic care on the East End. Now that summer has ended and those long sunny days are winding down, it’s the perfect time to consider laser and aesthetic treatments. Some of our most popular treatments this time of year relate to remov-ing sun damage and unwanted pigmentation. Combined treatment with the Fraxel Dual laser and Q-switched laser provides stunning results with very minimal downtime. These treatments and others are very popular, especially during our weekend hours, when people have a couple days to recover before returning to work or life in NYC or the East End. We are very excited to announce the addition of the new CoolSculpting Cool Advantage and Cool Advantage Plus hand pieces. This will allow for even more effective and efficient treatments in about half the time. Belly fat and love handles beware! Injectable filler treatments remain one of the most requested treat-ments in our Southampton facility, and we are happy to offer a wide range of all the best and newest injectable fillers for volume correction, lifting, contouring and filling of fine lines.
