The senate then took up tho Indianappropriation Din, ana Dawes brieflyrecapitulated its provisions. The estimates for the year, he said, were$8,466,809, The amount ot the bill as itcame from the house was $546,889I he amendments proposed by the senate increased it $757,413; total reportedby the senate for Indian service thecoming year $6,213,802. This exceededthe Indian bill last year $840,147. Thechief element of increase, Dawes said, was tno amount tor Indian schools

riurnb opposed the motion. Hethought the education of the Indianswas costing a great deal too much. Itwas merely spending money withoutany practical result. Churches weredoing the work at much less cost thantho government was paying. The education of Indians should be of a practical character. It was no use trying toeducate an Indian up to the idea thatne was a prince of blood. Plumb ndiculed the attempt of interested partiesto influence congress to appropriatemoney ior scnoois in Alaska.

Conger defended the Indians and thework of their education. In those.banks in New York whichopen accounts with men who . canneither read or write a password isestablished, which is used as a meansof identification. A man who wasunable to read or write was in S),Louis, where he was a complete stran-ger, and wished to draw money froma bank in Texas, where ho had anaccount. He could not identify him-self in any of the ordinary ways, andhe was asked to have his photographtaken. When this was done it wasattached to a check, upon which hemade his mark, and was sent forward.A telegram came back to pay thecheck, and the man got his moneyby means of his photograph. It issaid that this is the first instancewhere a man ever put his photographthrough the routine of bankbusiness.

where they remained until May 5,when they were taken on board theTitania for Quebec. It is telieyed 135lives were lost. The rescued party onboard the Titania presented a pitiableappearance. S3 sudden was the ca-lamity that many of them who were intheir bunks at the time hai to hurry ondeck and into the boats in their nightclothes. The bark went down instantly.Frightened passengers came on deck intheir night clothes and a scene of inde-scribable confusion ensued. Womenwent into hysterics and men refused tomove. Women especially objected toleaving the doomed vessel. Some whocould have been easily saved absolutelyrefused to budge an inch, and thosewho clung to the bottom of the cap-sized boat all night suffered terribly.During the thirty-fiv- e hoars tho sur-

vivors were afloat they had not a dropto drink, and were beginning to feel allthe horrors of extreme thirst whenrescued. Seamen all agree that the caseof the State of Florida was the quickestand most appalling disaster they everheard ot. James Steele, of Ayr, sur-geon of the State of Florida, was of the

pinion that the real inwardness of thecollision would never be ascertained,as tho whole thing was too sudden. The passengers were all in bed at time, and so were the sailors who were offduty. He says the officers, crew andpassengers all seemed to have lost theirheads.

The excursion train from the lWiliccoast, consisting of live Pullmancoaches, pulled into Las Vegas yester-day afternoon about eight hours behindon tueir schedule running time, butnotwithstanding the excursionists weioa little late, they were happy and comfortable, and cx pressed regret that thetrain could not lav la-r- for severalhours and afford them an epportumty to take in the hotsprings and ' ixulore the westSide of the Gallinas. Some of the excur- -sii" ?ts labored under the impressionti '. Las Vegas was merely tt village, baiting their judgment on what theyconld seo from the depot. Such anunderstanding, however, was soon dipelled when a Gazette reporter settus tongue to wagein . and every fumale ou the truin mud o note in herdiary that Las egas was the prosper.

Who engineered this cheap ride?"asked the scribe of a gaunt lookingfiend who ho picked upon as being anewspaper man.

Well, 1 may loso mv dinner by stop- -pir7 to answer your question, but thisex rsion started from San trancisolast- - Tuesday, afternoon, and was organized by llov. F. I. Shearer, of thePresbyterian church, more for the purpose oí carrying the ministers of thatdenomination through to Saratoga, inorder to have them there in time to participate in tbo geueral assembly ofPresbvtcrian ministers, which meets inthatcity on the l'jth of this month."

lou don t mean to say that allthese happy go lucky looking gentlemen sauntering about the platformare ecclesiastical dudes, do yourqueried the reporter.

JNot by considerable," replied thescribe's newly found friend. "Youunderstand tho male excursionists arenot all ministers, but taking advantageof tho low rates; people came from allsections of tho state, and altogetherthere are about one hundred and fiftypeople on this train."

"Does Mr. Shearer keep tab for theexcursionists and pour out salvation atevery slopping poinlr '

"Ot course not, you wicked fellow. There aro more thnu a dozon ministerson board, who look :if ter the spiritualwelfare of the party."

"How do tho ladies stand the jour-ney?"

f 'Pretty well, some of them; but justfollow mo and we'll go through thecars."

Following tho leader, tho Gazettereporter was in less time than it takes tomention tho tact brought face to facewith a group of comely 'Frisco ladies, and when his mission was explainedthey appreciated the scribe's situationand proceeded to lielp him.

"Oh, but wo're having such a glorioustime," said a stately blonde, who sat bya window munching a ginger snap."We're not the least bit fatigued, andthis mountain air, oh, it is delicious. We just d rink it in like it was Angelica.' '

"You all seem to bo pretty comforta-bly located," suggostod the reporter.

"Indeed we are," chirped in a petitebrunette, "and wo have such great funfor long-face- d Presbyterians. And Mr.Borry, ho's the jolliest soul on thetrain."

"And who is Mr. Berry? please,"asked the scribe.

"Why, don't you know him? Every-body does on the coast.

"Possibly,- - madam, but I have not thopleasure of his acquaintance," returnedthe reporter.

"Gracious, can it be? Whv, wethought everybody knew Fred," saidtho blondo. "Here's his card," andpassing tho same to tho reporter itread,

laughingly." J hai is, that ho can ride without

putting up."" Oh, of course ho never pays to ride,

but he's a good soul, and keeps every-body on the train in good humor. He'sa groat favorite in '1 risco." .

"

"Can a reporter, hungry tor newsgot some of the names of the ladies andgentlemen aboard this traveling caravausary?"

"Oh, there are ever so many nicepeople in the party. But we don't allbelong to church," said tho liule brunette. " This, you must understand, istho coach that carries the most preciousburden that ever went over this road

I grant that," replied the scribe, but how many ot that burden are
