ConurbationIn 1960, 41.8% of the population of the island asa whole resided in the Capital Las Palmas de GranCanaria, whereas in 1970, this was up to 47.9%.It is presently the seventh capital in Spain withregard to number of inhabitants, with a slowrecovery of its demographic dynamism since thestart of the 90's.

The public spaces of the island, specifically thelayout of the roads network, have not grown atthe same rhythm as construction has.

The proposed site is situated at one edge of oneof these high-accessibility roads.

SiteThe site articulates a residential area, an area oflight industry and services, and the area of theport. This strategic location is accompanied bythe maximum accessibility road which cutsthrough it and connects, at the same time, theurban area with landscapes and natural spaces ofgreat interest ( the peninsula of La Isleta hasbeen declared as a Protected Landscape by theCanary Islands Govt.). This quarter still maintainsits original layout, although at its edges it hasbeen subjected to different transformations.

ProgrammeAlthough the planned activities were initially related toSports Uses and Open Spaces, in order to promoteleisure-time and intercourse between citizens, thegreat capacity of the site to house complexprogrammes allows all this to be combined with aCommunity-Sports Centre for sports activitiescombined with leisure-culture (conference hall, gamesroom, low capacity concerts...).

At the same time, is the convenience of transferringand including on the site the building which housesthe present local Fire Brigade headquarters and theoffices of the Health Dept., both of which are small-format and situated at the southern edge of the site.

Issuesfunctional : Considered as a vital condition is the improvement of thequarter, which currently depends on its inconsistent internal layout.

social : The objective of the intervention is none other than to bringabout a change in terms of social intensification and reclassification,thus obtaining a result which offers greater urban coherence.

perceptual : With regard to traffic, the accessibility of the site isbased on the execution of an upper road which starts at the end of thepresent maximum accessibility road and where a transport connectingstation is planned.
