Xam NeuaXam neua is famous for it’s weekend morning markets where all the surrounding villages bring in their unique wares to sell. Known for the beauty of the weaving, the stalls are filled with different styles and patterns of the many ethnic groups that live around this mountain town. on the way to Xam neua notice the different villages and look out for traditional customs and baskets, each with a different shape and weave.

From Xam neua it is a short drive to vieng Xai caves, the headquarters of the Pathet lao resistance, a massive complex that housed a city of leaders, soldiers and families. The audio guide is impressive and you are left with respect for the resilience of these people as they fought their war. in one cave the theatre still stands and it was home to a circus, films, plays and an orchestra.

Central Region TRavel HigHligHts

Vientiane Capital Vientiane, the capital, economic centre, and largest city of Laos, is situated on the Mekong River near the Nong Khai border of Thailand. With a population of around 210,000, Vientiane has been the nation's capital since 1563, after fears of a Burmese invasion in the north.

Vientiane has a very laidback and friendly atmosphere, in stark contrast to the chaotic, bustling capitals of countries elsewhere in Southeast Asia, more akin to a large town than a major city. With lots of French influences from colonial days gone by, Vientiane is best enjoyed by the riverside, taking in the French colonial architecture and gold shimmering temples, stopping off to enjoy the views with some local coffee or a cold glass of Beerlao.

A popular tourist city, there is no shortage of sights and attractions to keep you entertained and interested in Vientiane. The Lao National Museum can be found next to Lao Plaza Hotel. Formerly known as the Lao Revolutionary Museum, here you'll discover artefacts and exhibits plotting the history of Laos from ancient times to modern day. Patuxai, also known as Victory Gate, is a proud national monument, fashioned on the Arc de Triomphe in Paris. This unmistakable structure on the low Vientiane skyline is also where you'll find the attractive Musical Fountain and World Peace Gong.

Wattay international airportThe city of Vientiane suddenly got a facelift after its new international airport was built in 1999 with grant aid from the Japanese government. In a land-locked country such as Laos, the international airport plays a crucial role by connecting it with neighboring countries and the world. No project is more closely related to the tourist industry than the Wattay International Airport. Ever since the new airport has been in operation, Vientiane has seen its number of tourists climb up to the sky. To date, the airport has gone through multiple upgrades to improve its services and capacity to cater to increased tourism.

As you'd expect, Vientiane has many temples to explore. Wat Si Saket, also known as the Sisaket museum, is one of the oldest temples in the country, and without doubt the most well visited.

Vang ViengSituated 150km from Vientiane, Vang Vieng is a small city surrounded by rivers and mountains, making it one of the most beautiful places in Laos. Popular with backpackers, the main activities and attractions are caves, tubing and trekking to the Hmong hill tribe villages.

43

Page 44: Laos Hotel Guide 2016

44

nam ngum lakeThe pristine green lake is breathtaking and attracts both locals and countless tourists to the area for many eco-friendly outdoor activities ranging from camping to kayaking, and tubing to jet skiing. With a little more development, Nam Ngum could be the next get-away place for people in the city.

XaysombounLocated in the remote area of Lao's backcountry, Xaysomboun is being blocked by mountains as natural barriers, therefore transportation made difficult. However, the new province that settles in the heart of the country and being surrounded by the other provinces, is compared as the unspoiled “heart” of a young girl that is waiting to shine her beauty during the blossom time. Unspoiled nature have become Xaysomboun's sales point for tourism despite the inconvenient transportation. For anyone who is fond of soft adventure will have fun exploring this province and fall in love easily.

thakhek - KhammouaneIn Khammouane Province, once only considered a thoroughfare and stop over point for travellers moving between Thailand and Vietnam, or exploring the charming towns and cities of the Mekong River, Thakhek is now a popular location for backpackers and tourists for its many treks and village tours.

The town of Thakhek is best enjoyed either walking along the riverbank, taking in picturesque views of the Mekong River, or by hiring a bicycle or moped and heading out along Route 12. Out on Route 12 you'll find a number of caves to explore, including the Tham Pha Fa, also known as Buddha cave. This only recently discovered cave is home to Buddha images dating back hundreds of years, and has become a popular site of local worship and devotion.

Pancake-like floodplains stretch as far as the eye can see, interrupted sporadically by sheer cliffs of limestone erupting from the earth. Khammouane province is home to some of the most spectacular scenery in the country.

The enormous Kong Lor Cave has been carved out of the limestone by a six-kilometre natural river that winds its way all the way from one side of a mountain to the other. At the mouth of the cave is a swimming hole where you can relax before or after navigating the river.

Savannakhet

Situated in western Laos, Savannakhet, officially known as Kaysone Phomvihane, is the capital of the Savannakhet province and the second-largest city in the country, after Vientiane with a mixed population of Thai, Vietnamese and Lao people and the old French colonial quarter of the town sits on the banks of the Mekong River. Because of the city’s close proximity to Thailand and their booming economy, Savannakhet has benefitted from lots of commercial development in the northern part of town. The city is home to a 15th century Buddist temple, named Wat Sainyaphum. Showing the city’s diversity, there is also a Catholic Church, a Chinese temple and a mosque.

69

70

PakseSits on the confluence of the Mekong and Se Don rivers, Pakse is the capital of the Champasak Province and was founded in 1905 by French colonialists, originally used as an administrative outpost. Since the opening of the Lao-Japanese Bridge in 2002, linking it to the east of Thailand, Pakse has quickly grown as a popular trade point and travel hub, often known as the gateway to Southern Laos.

Many of the French colonial buildings that once decorated Pakse no longer remain, though there are still several striking structures to spot, including the Chinese society building, a fine example of Franco-Chinese architecture. The city is also home to a number of attractive temples, such as Wat Luang, the grandest temple of the city and where you'll find the Buddhist Monk School; it's also a great spot to watch monks collecting their early morning alms, and Wat Phabad, the oldest temple of Pakse, named after what is believe to be a Buddha Footprint, which is guarded within. Across the Mekong you'll also find the Big Buddha, a large religious shrine and a great spot to view the city and river from.

Talat Dao Heung is one of the largest markets in the country and can be found near the foot of the Lao-Japanese Bridge. Here you'll find lots of fresh food products and locally produced coffee. Pakse has gained a reputation for having the best street food in Laos, not just for the wealth of tasty snacks and dishes that can be found Dao Heuang Market but also for the array of street food and hawkers spread around the city.

70

Page 71: Laos Hotel Guide 2016

71

ChampasakChampasak is a small town in southern Laos, on the west bank of the Mekong River about 40km south of Pakse, the capital of Champasak Province. The town is best known for a series of Khmer ruins, collectively named a UNESCO World Heritage Site as the ruins of Vat Phou, which is located at the foot of Phou Kao in Champasak Province some 6km from the Mekong River. Some believe there were temple structures on this site as long ago as the 5th century. Vat Phou Festival takes place on the 15th day of the increasing moon of the 3rd month (in January-February) and is a spectacular annual event.
