With its anchor down, Lansing Sexton’s wrestlingprogramworkingtosailagain. “We’reinadownspot,butwe’reworkinghardtotrytobuildthingsbackupandgetthisshipmovingagain,”saidLansingSextonwrestlingcoach,ChrisHenderson. Withfour-fivefreshmeninthelineup,thisyearwillbeaworkinprogress. “Wewillhaveafewgoodseniors to leadtheway,”explainedHenderson.“We’regoingtoneedacommitmenttotheteamfromeveryonewhichwillmeanattendingallprac-tices,conditioningandpickinguproutines,patternsandfun-damentals.”

TheseniorleadershipwillcomefromcaptainKyleDuke(189),GregDavenport(135),JarrodWade(152)andDkwonGuerrero(215). TheseseniorswrestledintheLansingKidsClubwhichalsoservesasafeederprogram. FreshmenwhowillstepinandmakecontributionsareDeJuanWilliams(130)andMarioMoreno(171). Sophomores Zac Bell (112) and Brandon Dugman(HWT)shouldalsohelpout. “Our off-season work habits varied from good togreat.”Withateachableattitudeandastrongworkethic,Hendersonbelievestheshipcansurvivethechoppytimes.

Talented Big Reds a likely choice to repeat success of 2010-11

What does a coach ask of his defendingClassBstatechampionbasketballteam. If you are Sexton boys basketball coachCarltonValentineyouasktheBigRedsplayerstostayhumble,respectthegame,respectyouropponent,workhard inpracticeand in schoolandbeagoodpersoninpursuitofeverydaylife. Wow!Onegetstheimpression,Valentineistalkingaboutmorethanjustbasketball. “Ofcourse,letusberemindedthesearekidswe’retalkingabout.Theyforget.Acoachneedstoremindthem,”Valentinesaid. Whatthecoachdoesn’tneedremindingofisthathehasmoretalentonhisrosterthanargu-ablyanyschoolinthestateinanyclass. Sexton girls work to improve win total in 2011-12Wins for the Lansing Sexton girls basketballprogramwereataminimumin2010-11. Behind the senior leadership and play ofsenior guards, Sophia Morrell and CorneshaGund,theBigRedswilllooktobuildandmakeimprovementsontheir1-20seasonayearago. “We have a total of six seniors returningfromayear ago,” saidSextongirls basketballcoachJoeWojda.“Thegirlsworkhardandplayhard,butwe’renotreallyskilled.” Sextonwillattempttouseitsquicknesstogetoutandrunandtrytogeteasy,quickbasketsofftheirpressesandquicktraps. “Ideally,wewanttocreateturnovers,”Woj-dasaid.“Wewillalsoneedourbestplayers,Mor-rellandGundtoscore12-15pointsagame.” TheBig Reds’ struggles over the last fiveyearshaveextendedbeyondoffenseanddefense.Keepingafullrosterofplayerstofinishaseasonmaybethemostperplexingchallenge.

“Lastyearwecouldn’trunsomedrillsbe-cause of roster numbers.We’ve got to find awaytokeepthegirls’interestwhileimprovingourplayanddevelopingourskills,”saidWoj-da.“Girlsbasketballinthesuburbsisthriving.Here,westrugglewithinterestandkeepingthegirlsinvolved.” The result has been a dwindling youthprogram. “The good players are now leaving innercityschoolsandgoingdifferentplaces.Twentyyears ago therewas loyalty and girls couldn’twaittoplayforSexton,EasternandEveritt,”ex-plainsWojda.“Now,it’swho’sbestandwheredoIgotofitin.” Thegoalin2011-12istowinmoregamesand return thegirls basketball interestback totheurbanareasandnotnecessarilyinthatorder.
