LANGUAGE RESEARCH IN SERVICE TO THE NATION

Language, Regional Expertise, and Culture (LREC)

Overarching goal To depict the current landscape of LREC research

DoD Question: Does DoD-supported LREC research reflect a shared vision and priorities with significant impact throughout the DoD?

–CASL will present findings on DoD-supported LREC research.

–Sustainable Solution: Proof-of-concept online collaboration tool for research, knowledge sharing, and management of DoD-supported LREC research.

Language, Regional Expertise, and Culture (LREC)

What we’ve done so far• Planned course of action with Defense Language

Office (DLO)

• Interviewed and surveyed approximately 50 SMEs

• Gathered over 200 open source USG media on Culture and Regional Expertise

• Compared foci of DoD and academic research

LANGUAGE RESEARCH IN SERVICE TO THE NATION

Language, Regional Expertise, and Culture (LREC)

Broad focus of data collection

Identify

• Research brands, investigators, topics, programs, agendas

• Groups and individuals involved in culture and regional expertise research

• Intellectual leaders (leading LREC DoD scientists, decision-makers, analysts, and policy-makers)

• Print and electronic media

Current findings• “Regional expertise,” per se, is not studied

– Research applies culture theory to regions (e.g., Negotiations in the Middle East)

– Human performance within context• Meta-themes of culture research

– Socio-cultural interaction & communication (e.g., What are key skills and attributes that Army leaders need to be effective in cross-cultural missions?)

– Curricula development• Training, education, simulation

– Modeling

Proof-of-concept online collaboration tool• Examples of social collaboration tools:

– Wikis, blogs, online data repositories, chat/virtual conference rooms

• Purpose:– Research repository of information– Reduce redundancy– Create network– One-stop shop (for managers and military personnel

addressing culture and/or regional expertise matters)

• Audience: – Analyst and researcher – Manager and policy-maker
