    Long ago, both Heron andHummingbird ate fish. Hummingbird,who was tiny and fast, ate tiny fish.Heron, who was big and slow, atebig fish.

    One day, Hummingbirdshared with Heron what he hadbeen thinking.

    “There may not always beenough fish for all the birds like us,”said Hummingbird.

    “There may not be,” agreedHeron.

    “Perhaps only one of us shouldeat fish,” Heron suggested.

    “Shall we have a race todecide who that will be?” askedHummingbird.

    “That seems fair,” said Heron.

    The birds decided they wouldrace to a tree they both knew.

    “It’s a long way from here,though,” said big, slow Heron. “Itis clear to me that the race will takefour days.”

    “I accept that,” Hummingbirdsaid, thinking he could get theremuch faster.

    They started the race the nextmorning. Heron flew straight ahead.Hummingbird flew in circles aroundhis friend.

    Then Hummingbird flew downto some flowers.

    “What are you doing?” Heroncalled from above.

    “I am drinking sweet nectar,”called Hummingbird.

    “What’s that?” asked Heron.“The honey inside the flowers,”

    Hummingbird called back.

    Heron didn’t hear Hummingbird’sanswer. He had already flown onahead of Hummingbird.

    Suddenly, Hummingbird realizedHeron was not in sight. Off he racedto join his friend again. That washow the race continued.

    Heron flew on and on, straightahead. Hummingbird stopped everytime he saw flowers. Then he racedto pass Heron again.

    Hummingbird stopped to rest atnight, too. He slept near flowers anddrank sweet nectar for breakfast.Then he raced to catch up withHeron, who just kept flying.

    Hummingbird woke on thelast morning.

    “It will take me only another halfhour to get to the tree,” he thought.“I wonder where Heron is.”

    When Hummingbird arrived, big,slow Heron was already at the tree.Heron won the race by flying withoutstopping while Hummingbird rested.

    That is how Heron became theowner of all the fish in the rivers. It isalso why Hummingbird flies amongthe flowers, drinking the sweetnectar he so enjoyed along the way.
