COMBINED LAYERSIn order to le t the v i s i to rs appreciate water better, road match water closely. Buildings and activity space utilize the terrain to build a good vision.

TERRAIN LAYERTerrain which possess less than 10 meter altitude difference, contributing to the gentle vertical vision. And horizontally, by the idea of Chinese mountain , the terrain enclose areas, leading the route, naturally.

ROAD LAYERMain road connect main scenic zone, and secondary road enable the people stay in an area longer, and transit to another gradually.

ACTIVITY PLACE LAYERExcerpt some bas ic act iv i ty places, some places that relate the theme of water is considered. Including flatform upon water, open areas that face water, and water curtain cave where people can enjoy the man-made rain.

WATER LAYERWater is divided into large ones, small ones, long ones and short ones. By doing so, water could possess multifunction--beatifying, boating, ambling, fishing, and inducing sense of motion.

PART 1-- PART 2-- G PART 3-- H O D A PART 4 -- S CO P S

Considering the advantage of the two rivers and a water source, I create a mul t i -use wet land park which would be in harmony with the whole environment and make provision for the needs of the local residents and visitors.

There are several kinds of water in Wenyu wetland park: long and narrow little river enable people ambling along; small water planes function as fish pond or appreciating objects; large water plane enable people take good-sized water sports; and people can shuttle among dispersive water planes.

Why do couples choose Wenyu river to take their wedding photos

?Wenyu river is considered as the mother river of Beijing. It is famous for its wild beautiful scenery, and since its location is a little far from the city center, seldom do people would come there, thus couples can take photos there without interruption. So I focus on the marriage theme, corresponding the people's needs, especially the couples.

In order to reconstitute the projecting site and endow the site with multifunction involved in marriage theme, I design a peach blossom village attract couples to take photos; Material wedding buildings; Campground; Youngsters' center; And the most important is, "Sixi continents", consist of four continents. The name "Sixi" means four kinds of happiness of marriage. And in this park, I endow each of the island a theme, that are flowers, matchmaker, water continents, and wedding grassland.

The s i t e wa s g i v en t o be designed to satisfy the local people's needs and to beautify the environment. Due to the perfect natural condition-- the site is surrounded by Wenyu river and Qing river, and there are no obvious buildings nearby, I focus on designing a wetland park here where people in this busy city can relax themselves easily.

BUILDING LAYERThree kinds of building--service building, sight building, and education building. According to specific area character, visitor center should near the main entrance, wedding photograghing center can be built in an area to attract people to take wedding Service building

V O ERThe visitor center functions as service center, consist of booking off ice, restraunt, playground, information table...

H I PARI design this part that directs to the main part of the wet park, in order to make the visitors enjoy the process that begins at dryness, and ends at moisture. In China, to express one specific beautiful thing, you have to contain it at the beginning.

P CE PARBased on the theme of marriage, I design this part where peach blossom are widely planted, in order to provide the couples a good place where they would like to take photos, since peach blossom symbolize happiness of marriage in China.

E M ER OPeople can boating, fishing, picnic, amble... in this part. The part is made of a large quantity of water, which in part is divided by four little islands, symbolizing four themes involves marriage-- water, f lower, matchmaker, and wedding grassland.

CA lot of playgrounds would be built here, and a main building would be the classroom and restraunt for the youngsters. Nearby, there is a large grassland facing the water, that would be the camping area for the youngsters.

E EN P RWorkers work here, and the nearby north land part would be developed into nursery garden.

G PARThis part is left for the people, where they can enjoy the beautiful Qing river view, and stay. Besides, a primary fish pool is reserved and developed into a subsided educational fish pool, where people can get closely to the fish.

W U ERIN P RIn order to create a good environment for the people to enjoy the Wenyu river view, I break the land here, making people wander on the broken lands that are surrounded with water, and roads connect the lands. A sense would be made-- "I stand on water, and watching the water flow."

This work require me to design a park with Chinese technique. Curves are widly used, so do the various mountain forms. Water is almost appears in every classical Chinese garden, and different water shape provide people different kinds of entertainment and emotion.

Mountain and water, are always the aesthetic objects to the poets and scholars in China. They appreciate the objects affiliating with their abstract emotion—pleasant sensation, sorrow, imagination, rationale… Mountain and water, actually have become people’s ecological expectation, and an important part in people’s psychological lives. So, though people cannot approach mountain and water in daily life, they can reach them in their heart.

The Chinese garden I design bases on the poetic imagery of the poems written by Yuanming Tao, a poet in Jin Dynasty, who is famous for his rectitude and affection on chrysanthemum. The poem-- Southern mountain:

While picking asters neath the Eastern fence,My gaze upon the Southern mountain rests.

I design the Chinese garden in order to leave a place for the people to recall Tao, and enjoy the poetic imagery in his poems.

The main activity people can have in the garden is to enjoy chrysanthemum. Chrysanthemum relates to Yuanming Tao closely. Tao loves chrysanthemum, since chrysanthemum represent loftiness, longevity, and luck, and Tao's personality just seems like that of chrysanthemum. Lots of Tao's poems about appreciating chrysanthemum are still well-known to everyone nowadays. Actually, early in Han-Wei Period, activities involve enjoying chrysanthemum were prevailing.

The site locates in the northeast of Jiujiang county, Jiangxi province. Poet Yuanming Tao is native, and he held himself aloof from the world in his later life in this county. The site I choose locates a little far away from Yuanming Tao memorial hall, considering the site I designed can be a compensation of the hall residence, since the former one locates deep in the residence, and the other one can locates in some place where people's effect would be less. The environment accords with the poetic imagery of poems written by Yuanming Tao.

People have to travel there by foot, along the route to the site, people can enjoy the beautiful mountain scenery and the feeling in the poems like "After sorrow, joy".

Wudaokou is some region where various culture collides with each other, different people exchange their ideas, languages, knowledge there, and they are longing to meet new culture.

Tsinghuayuan railway station is such a special site in Wudaokou-- such a special region. I intend to reconstitute the site to meet the local people's needs, and encourage them to re-examine the railway history, according to the broken Tsinghuayuan railway station.

The site has to possess function that meet the local people's needs.

Lots of vendors take activities along Chengfu Road, most of them make a stall with goods spread out on the ground for sale. These business activities do bad effect on the local environment. However, they are still popular, since they satisfy the local people's need for cheap commodities and various snacks.

The site would be changed from an area with disordered buildings into a place that provide the vendors with stalls to show their commodities. Closed places and open places would be designed for the vendors and people. Traffic and environment can be developed by the way.

This work required me to design a square in front of a branch company of China Mobile Communications Corporation. China Mobile Communications Corporation (CMCC) is a well-known operating agency, based on the GSM internet. Now it is the only agency which focus on correspondence, holding the largest amount of clients in the world.

Since high buildings enclose the site, the landscape design has to be noticed by people not only from the street, but also from high stories. Water channel becomes a signal of CMCC. Considering the ground off the garage, trees will be planted over the side, keeping away from the center part. Relaxing

At night, water channel, water pool, lines of lights that posit on the stages, Morse code stone bench, and lights installed on the wood floor will be light up, creating a graceful environment for CMCC, and can be recognized by people not only from the street, but also from high stories. A sense of broadcast and diffusion will be made. Here is CMCC!

Pruitt Igoe

Except of course that Pruitt Igoe, the giant housing scheme designed by Minoru Yamasaki and completed in 1956, isn’t there. Beginning with a spectacular implosion in 1972, it had been completly demolished by 1976. Famously, that first implosion was dubbed the ‘Death of Modernism’ by Charles Jencks. Almost all traces of the sites life as a huge housing scheme have been erased. It is now a forest – a surreal and unsettling landscape that has grown out of the debris dumped on the site from other demolitions. The Ruins Of Modernism

The forest has an archeological atmosphere – as though one were discovering an ancient civilisation amongst the undergrowth. Roads are still there but gradually encroached upon by the forest. A lamppost stands amongst the trees. Depressions in the ground are not natural topology but formed by the sites of imploded buildings.

To the north of the site is a historic neighbourhood which reveals the extent of devastation to the fabric of the city. Whole blocks of housing have been pulled down leaving grass fields. In others a single house stands as the remnant of the urban fabric.

As much as it this seems an admission of failure, it also seems successful in some senses. While the image projected by its typology

and language may seem traditional there is no history here – its use of history in the present is an attack on the real forces and narratives

of history. Even more ambivalent is the idea that there could be no New Urbanism without Modernism – or even, we could suggest,

that this is what that Modernism became.

Here, more than anywhere, one longs for the resurrection of something, the resurrection of

ambition, the resurrection of will in the face of such a devastating and tragic narrative

ingrained into the very soil of Pruitt Igoe.

To the south is this New Urbanist development, where the vague image of historical-ness is applied to neo-traditional house typologies. This, perhaps, is the most depressing aspect of Pruitt Igoe now. An image of the failure and retreat of architecture, a symbol of a clear political victory over architecture’s own forms of ideology.

The site now though is a stunning and tragic place – the result of Pruitt Igoe’s traumatic history of hopes and failure: of slum clearance, architectural vision, political and social collapse, economic abandonment that all adds up to what appears to be a natural environment. Except this is a forest that grows out of all that socio-political debris.

Site History

Effect Image and the Story

Site Birdview

Simultaneously, countless industrial artifacts are discarded daily, trucked out of sight and out of mind, and further contributing to the cultural amnesia that we now suffer from. Except functioning as sewage disposal system, this project also reconsiders the importance of St. Louis as a once vital city of industry and attempts to reactivate some of its cultural by-products including a key landscape, as a new way of provoking cultural memory.

Cultural memories are, more often than not, totally lost to new generations, and at best, remain little more than dim bits or facts about key dates or figures passed on from generation to generation. The memory of a site and its events – for example that of Prutti – Igoe in St. Louis, becomes little more than a cloudy myth of what happened there, or worse yet, reduced to a particular moment of importance for one culture (architecture) of the many that were actually implicated in the history of the site.

Behind and between the water flows, concrete, metal and soil made multi-layers load post industry products are arranged chronologically. People walk along the circular path, from the first layer on the ground, to the deep layer underground, visit this industry product library, or a forest. Down here, industry products become unique realities, they explode everywhere, guaranteeing a life span of hundreds of years.

In an age where our memory stored digital copies, new approaches to collectivememory are necessary. This project offers an alternative record of the world we lived in and a new approach for the public to engage with its collective memory.

In Chinese classical gardens, stones are considered as the skeleton of the gardens. The stones can be viewed as the compositions of the mountain, also can be a symbol of a whole mountain, abstractly. In prehistoric period, mountains became the adoring object due to their height and natural conditions, people always relate the mountain with the sky. So, Chinese, especially the Chinese poets and scholars, have affection for the stones. Stones, which have smaller volume than mountain, but win the people’s adoration, too. an-ma e mounta n samp e

Interests do not only exist on the light surface, but in the deep cave. Stone mountain gardens focus on let people experience the turn from light to dark, and from dark to light.

I design a stone arch there, creating some kind of space, that tends to be open and soft. And the "space" can offer the people shelter, which is good for the people have exercise there, and enjoy the good view of Houxi River.

Along to the way rising to the site, closing to the big stiones, people can enjoy the view of Houxi River at a distance, and at different angle.

An open ground to enjoy the water closely is necessory. And the ground is also the nodal point of popular flow.

Qiwang Garden and Cloud Garden are two of the classical gardens in Summer Palace, now they are relics, and the building bodies are uncomplete. This work is one of the computer work that are made for the teaching plan with professor Gong ( professor in painting, who recommend me). Based on the restored map, I recover the gardens in computer, which are used in painting classes in my school, and all of these are made by myself. By showing the models in class, they can help the students have a better understanding of what they would see in Summer Palace, have a basic space concept of Chinese gardens, and teachers can easier explain the details in complex Chinese gardens when they turn the model to a right point.

Shanjinxuan locates in Chengde Imperial Summer Resort, which is famous for its steep environment. Shanjin, means facing mountain too closely, which equates with a sense of danger. The site now actually is debris, I rebuilt it in part on the paper.

I imagined this site, which is located on high mountain, surrounded by thick pines. I designed buildings at a Zigzag route, rising all the way in that buildings arranged on a line can make the whole bui ld ing part seems hidden in the mountain, thus people inside the building can feel the nature more closely.

Still imitating the work of my teacher. How to illstrate the sense of sadness on the paper? Well, for I hold, sometimes blankness speaks much more than satiety.

This is a sketching work from nature, about Xiequ Garden, which locates in then Summer Palace, The site shows a sense of dying aristocratic breath to me. , I feel complicated about the garden, in my eyes, the scenery may be as same as before, but now situation changes, and its character is lost. A sense of fragmentation, history, silence, and so forth came to my mind, and I followed my feeling.

I made the sketch in surging wave pavillion, during the Southern Internship in Surging Wave Pailion, Hangzhou. Different from gardens in north, like Summer Palace or the Imperial Palace, sourthern gardens are small and delicated. The first impression people make on southern gardens are always elegance, delication, and serenity. Moreover, when people go deeper into these small gardens, they would find so many interesting corners. Uncomplete building, plants, walls, stones would get togeter so as to making the corner seems so complete.

There are so many buddha statues in Lingyin Temple, Hanghzou. The buddha below is a part of a mountain, but at that moment, that image of the buddha in my mind transits to some fantacy image, like a buddha is floating in the air. Maybe for the reason that being affected by the local atmosphere of sanctity.

Refer to a photo from internet, I began this impression drawing work. No personal imagination, just mimic the light effect of the photo, and thinking about the rationality.(A2)
