I AM a landscape designer, creator, and traveler. I grew up in Oregon and Japan, and these landscape and culturally rich places nurtured my fascination and appreciation for the physical environment. I am particularly interested in how the physical environment impacts social interaction, movement, and emotions, which inspires me to create healthy and beautiful places across the world.

CONTEXTEXISTING CONDITIONS
Downtown Lafayette has developed from rural beginnings into a metropolitan center. However, sprawl, pervasive influence of the automobile and underutilized parking lots are preventing Lafayette from reaching its livable, sustainable potential. The competition proposal features an extention to the Acadiana Center of the Arts, strengthening Main Street through additions of plaza and green space, bringing commercial to support local business, and affordable multi-family housing. The scheme aims to invigorate the urban core while also uniting surrounding neighborhoods and producing a 24-hour community.

Caofeidian is an “Eco-city” that lies in the bay of the Bohai Sea, 220 km away from Beijing. As a component of this development, the client wants to create a water sports entertainment hub that transports Beijingers to the tropics of southern China without the plane ticket. The conceptual master plan program includes white sand beaches, purified lake for water sports, a surf pool, villas and yacht clubs, all constructed upon an artificial island. The shape of the central lake embodies the Pheonix, a Chinese mythological bird that is a symbol of Caofeidian.

Situated in Northwestern corner of China, Zunhua’s naturally picturesque landscape is attributed by layering of forested hills carved out by serpentine rivers. Benxi Hot Spring Resort master plan offers relaxation by utilizing local natural hot spring water and is punctuated by a grand hotel, elevated by natural topography. All structures, including 25 private villas were strategically located and oriented to maximize views. One of the biggest accomplishments of this project was resolving grading, accommodating approximately 30 meters of elevation from entry to lobby.

LEFTI began to locate the villas by diagramming the programmed space requirements while thinking of equal view, access, and solar distribution.
THUPDI participated in the Dongguan CBD landscape design competition in a collaboration with LSG Landscape Architecture (US). The powerful scheme envisages a lively and livable CBD while respecting the local landscape and culture. The reclaimed stream becomes the center piece of three CBD zones (entertainment, science & technology, commercial). [FALL 2012, THUPDI; LSG LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE (U.S.)]

GUAN-GRASS (CHINESE: “GUANCAO”) IS A NATIVE GRASS IN THE DONGGUAN REGION. This water-loving plant’s arching form inspired the design team’s aesthetic for the design of public space, particularly the elevated walkway.

The elevated walkway, public open spaces, urban water system, and non-vehicular transportation weave together social spaces and create efficient circulation throughout the site.

THE URBAN WATERWAY proposes that the existing polluted stream be covered for sewage, and construct a new water table filled with purified water above. Check dams help control water levels and topography change on the site.

Located approximately 140 km away from Beijing, Zunhua is emerging as a county-level city, an accessible escape from the city. Currently under construction, Zunhua Hot Spring Resort lies embraced by old-growth Sweet Chestnut forests and offering views of the Great Wall on clear days. Garden design of private villas on the resort campus utilized the existing topography and preserves the valued chestnut trees. Each unit has a private hot spring pool with dramatic views of the surrounding hills.

Kellogg Lake resembles a natural and social clog, where polluted stagnant water sits, people cannot access, and native vegetation is overwhelmed. This urban public park with lightrail transit breaks up and releases this congestion to create a healthy flow of water, habitat and people through the Milwaukie’s urban core. Reflecting on Milwaukie’s unique and rich history allows us to move forward. This project is the next chapter in Milwaukie’s future as a vibrant and healthy community.

Eugene is an eclectic mix of young college town, urban fabric, and ecological habitats. Despite the close proximity to each other, these elements currently lack connection, circulation and movement. This master plan involving 24-student collaboration reimagines Eugene as a cohesive piece, while recognizing and enhancing the riparian habitat on the Willamette River.

The SAIF Corporation came to our studio seeking design help on their one acre courtyard. The 200 employee office requested a safe, sustainable, and aesthetic space while preserving the existing 300 year Oregon White Oak. The project accomplishes these tasks while focusing on clear circulation, craftsmanship, and the blending of architectural and landscape space.

This multi-disciplinary collaboration showcases applications of low impact, or nature-friendly, development practices in an urban setting for built structures, stormwater management and natural spaces. Metro’s Transit Oriented Development program and Nature in Neighborhoods program have come together to demonstrate that vibrant, dense development on a real site can provide amenities and sustainable building features and infrastructure that benefit people, fish, and other wildlife. Healthy density is possible.

As the former imperial capital of Japan, Kyoto is one of the oldest and most culturally rich metropolises in Asia. It is also a dense, modern city. Our goal was to reimagine a cohesive and fluid urban experience and to merge Kyoto’s culture and aesthetic with present needs. Collaborating with local planners and engineers, and interviewing community members furthered our understanding and enhanced our designs.

Our project titled “Salute da Zingonia” means “Health to Zingonia” in Italian. It is also a play on words from the phrase “Saluti da Zingonia”, which means “Welcome to Zingonia”. To research landscape identity, cognative maps on postcards were created by children in the local schools. Later, the postcard concept was carried through to the PR and advertising branch of the Zingonia project.

The seed was planted for a vision for Zingonia as a sustainable, integrated, and democratic community in Bergamo, Italy. This intensive one-week workshop jointly with the City of Verdellino Planning Department has helped catalyze new initiatives and opportunities for the requalification and re-invention of Zingonia. Our research included studies of new towns (i.e. Zingonia), and also included an town branding component.
