Raised with the Urewera Ranges on my doorstep, I developed an affinity for the beauty and significance of New Zealand’s wilds from a young age.

Having realised my innate drive for people, I was drawn into youth work and then social work, focusing on community.

A sense of social responsibility and a creative flair have seen the fields of ecology and community unite in the form of landscape architecture. A priority is placed on public space and the encouraging of local community in the forming and the appreciation of the space. Social and ecological restoration are key in landscape architecture that drives me.

HISTORY

As part of the 2013 IFLA Conference, student candidates were engaged with finding a best-fit solution to reconnect Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei land with Okahu Bay, the iwi home waters and traditional waka landing site. Assessment of the site was to cater to the potential for infrastructure supporting waka events of various scales, in addition to the creation of a renewed waterfront space that might be embraced by the local community.

The use of plants might be the only element that sets Landscape Architecture apart from allied disciplines of Urban Planning and Architecture. While a high weighting should be set on the use of plants in placemaking, the plant knowledge and understanding of practitioners often suggests otherwise.

I believe the placement of plants in any site should take into account not only aesthetics, but also the respective ecologies that accompany each species.

My understanding of plants relating to their selection and requirements is strong. This has been added to by my time at Lincoln University - B.Hort.Sc(Hons) - as well as in the creation of the landcape-oriented website - nzfloralens.wordpress.com - which focuses on New Zealand natives.

The wetland at Onepoto Domain, long ago taken over by pampas, is given a recharge with the restoration of a diverse floral gradient native to the area. The subsequent generation of zonal ecological niches enhances diversity of habitat by varying the intersection of zones while maintaining appropriate buffers. A meadow area is implemented to futher the site’s habitat diversity. This provides a seasonal nesting site and a food bank of insects for resident birdlife, as well as adding to informal recreation space.

_L ID - Hydro logy

The merging of stormwater treatment and public amenity was proposed, maximising efficiency of space while promoting and educating the public on issues relevant to local waterways and the ecosystems therein. Through this integration, habitat for flora and fauna is extended into the urban realm.

Well-planned contemporary subdivisions respect local waterways through Low Impact Design, minimising contaminant levels in stormwater run-off. Based around catchments and the land’s natural contouring, Puhinui was tendered as a hypothetical extension of Auckland’s urban zone, and LID idealised throughout.

_Trans i t vs Communi ty

The widening of the Ellerslie-Panmure Highway to cater to increased automotive traffic will add to disconnection of the Panmure community from the iconic Panmure Lagoon.

A bridging of the widened highway with terraced parkland is herein suggested as an holistic solution, ensuring traffic flow is maintained while Panmure community and economy is endorsed.

1. Versatile public space for Panmure residents; 2. Community gardening and public event opportunities; 3. A widened pedestrian-cycleway bridges the traffic without conflict; 4. Bus access is brought central to the public space; 5. Opportunity for increased retail and eateries;6. Habitat created for native bird species

A greenway was proposed as a transport alternative, linking Manukau and Auckland cities from the airport through to Onehunga and connecting to the existing rail network. This light rail connects communities isolated by fewer public transport options than inner city suburbs. Access to education, employment and recreation is enhanced for local residents.

Exchange points act as transport hubs, where cycling and shuttles commute locals between their home or work and the cost- and environmentally-efficient electric rail.

Mangere Bridge Exchange was conceptualised, with newly created public and entertainment space merging with a transport interchange. The grounds are designed with CPTED principles, maintaining high and directed flow-through while ensuring maximum visibility across the site throughout the day and night.

Otara’s Hamill Reserve is reawakened with the EN:CO:RE methodology

- ENlivening the space with the addition of a fitness trail and a 1km running circuit;- COnnecting with the Otara Creek Walkway beyond the park’s extent, as well as seeing the addition of bridges and strengthened entry points; and - REstoring the health of Otara Creek and associated ecology through pest plant eradication, riparian planting and the institution of ecology education panels.

_F ina l Year Pro ject_ iWhile government initiatives have facilitated Future Urban areas around Auckland in the proposed Unitary Plan to cater to a growing population, Auckland Council are endeavouring to maximise existing urban space. While higher gradient land is more costly to develop, perhaps alternative use might give more efficient use of space.

In contemporary subdivisions, stormwater is dealt with through WSD systems largely on the flat, where wetlands gather water to be treated. This present study is analysing the possibility of treating stormwater on higher-gradient (25-40%) slopes.

A terraced swale train (TST) device is herein proposed, where stormwater retention is enhanced through a light-footprint

Gradient, soil type, soil stability and water-holding capacity are factors that will heavily influence the form and dimensioning of this device from site to site. A number of professionals were consulted with to determine optimal parameters for the implementation of the Terraced Swale Train concept in a successful stormwater treatment train.

A highly vegetated composition of deliberately selected and positioned native species maintains the slope’s integrity, allowing high-flow events to run perpendicular to swale direction without slope failure. Hydrology calculations demonstrate adequate treatment time depending on swale length, depth and longitudinal slope.

GIS was used to identify three sites where such a device might be implemented to assist in stormwater cleansing. These sites were selected to represent some of Auckland’s diverse land and development form.

Opportunities for the support of unique ecologies were found, as well as value-adding through the creation of recreational space and visual amenity in the local community.

Further analysis of the wider Auckland will help identify sites for the retrofitting of established suburbs as well as the tool’s implementation as the city grows laterally.

Terrain was overlayed with appropriately adapted swale trains to suit a treatment train of local context. The wider social and hydrological construct was assessed, and advantages and drawbacks were recognised for each site.
