Landscape Architecture Design Simulation
Pia Fricker | Alexandre Kapellos| ETH Zurich | Landscape Architecture Design Simulation - Using CNC Tools as Hands-On Tools
Landscape Architecture Design Simulation...the modules focus on the praxis-oriented use of current CAAD/CAM (computer-aided architectural design/computer-aided manufacturing) technologies in the area of landscape architecture. The main focus of the program is not the acquisition of new software skills but rather the integration of cutting-edge modeling and visualization technologies as design tools within the field of landscape architecture...

1. Module: Landscape Modelling Level 1:Course Content
The course focuses on acquiring the necessary knowledge to generate, develop and output topographic models in parallel to the design process. In Level I students will learn basic NURBS modelling techniques, whereas in Level II students will build upon and refine their basic skills and pursue alternate ways of generating topography through scripting (Rhinoscript) and/or graphical interfaces (Grasshopper). Various other potentialities of topographical modelling will also be explored; instance-based, as opposed to the final – frozen – state, showing the project process at various time occurrences.
Used Software
Rhino 4, RhinoCAM, Grasshopper and other CAD software (VectorWorks, ArchiCAD, etc.)

2. Module: Landscape Visualization Level 1:Course Content
The course aims to empower the designer to integrate visualisation techniques into all levels of the design process, enabling communication, prototyping, and atmospheric simulation from sketch design to final presentation. An emphasis on flexible and non-destructive workflows serves as a base to allow designers and collaborators to maximise both the quality of design output, and its efficiency. An introduction to the strengths of combining various software packages, leads directly to the practical application of these tools to project-oriented outcomes. An additional focus is on techniques for optimising and streamlining these tools for design and personal workflow.

The focus of the MAS LA of Professor Girot’s Chair at the Architecture Department of the ETH Zurich will be on the use of the latest modeling and visualization possibilities as well as the 3D illustration of landscape architecture. Through intensive work with these techniques, graduates are capable completing complex design tasks as well as de-veloping new forms of design method. The chosen CAD programs (i.e. Rhino) are particularly appropriate for the visu-alization of both detailed and large-scale landscape designs and offer the possibility for export to computer-steered milling machines. The course of studies is intended to be completed part-time over two semesters and is divided into 7 themed modules and 1 concluding thesis module. The modular structure allows a concentration on individual themes, which can be combined within the framework of an individual project as the concluding thesis moduleThe program is geared towards university graduates in the areas of architecture and landscape architecture who have professional experience and are already familiar with various visualization and modeling techniques. Early sing-up is recommended, because the number of participants is limited to 16. Details on course structure and schedule can be found: www.girot.arch.ethz.ch
Registration:Registration materials, including portfolio and reference letters, can be submitted between January 1st and April 30st, 2011. The program starts at the end of September 2011.Further registration information can be found at the following address: www.zfw.ethz.ch
Program cost: 18,000 CHF
