In a landmark verdict, the Supreme Court on Tuesday ruled that caste should not be the solebasis to decide backwardness of a community and quashed the Centre's decision to grantOBC reservation to Jat community.

The SC said that caste, though a prominent factor, can't be the sole factor to decidebackwardness.

"Possible wrong inclusion of a caste in the OBC list in the past cannot be the basis of furtherwrong inclusions," the SC bench observed.

"We hold that a politically organised class like Jat community cannot be given reservation,"the SC said.

The SC asked why communities are being increasingly included in the OBC list but they arenot being removed from the category with passage of time.

The apex court also asked the Centre to consider new and emerging form of backwardnessto decide the OBC list and referred the case of transgender which must be given benefits ofOBC reservation.

The Jat reservation was introduced by the UPA government in March 2014.
