When Kevin and Jana Neufeld first opened BeauChapeau® in 1997 they literally threw their hat in the ring.

The Neufelds had the idea to create a store that gave visitors a memorable experience to play ‘dress up’ and have fun – and in what store, other than a hat shop, can you leave happier than when you went in, especially if you didn’t buy anything?Kevin had little retail experience, even less capital and was facing skepticism from the ‘regular business institutions’. However, with the support of family and friends they signed a lease in 1997 to open a small shop now known as BeauChapeau®. The Neufelds opened their doors six days after the birth of their first child and filled a need in the marketplace – it was the only men’s and women’s hat shop south of Toronto.

Sixteen years later, BeauChapeau® has grown remarkably, becoming the largest volume independent hat retailer in the country, thus having most certainly found their niche. BeauChapeau® features North American Made and Fair Trade hats and accessories. One-of-a-kind, name brand and designer labels like Stetson®, Biltmore, Christy’s of London, Kangol, Eric Javits, Helen Kaminski, Lilliput and Louise Green Millinery.

For gift-giving Fedoras or Tilley hats are always a good gift item for men. They come in a variety of styles, colours and sizes. For the women, hat, glove, and scarf sets are very popular. The store’s staff will work with you to ensure that what ever

hat you’re looking for will suit the face, fashion and function of the person.

Since its inception, the store has and continues to be evolving and innovative whether it’s constantly changing product line or the store’s presentation of the product displays. The Neufelds have gone through many physical store transformations, with most recent in 2013. Kevin feels the latest renovation has captured the look and feel of the 1920s and 30s – the Golden Hat Era. They installed genuineperiod light fixtures and pieces such as a 1938 Singer Sewing Machine, a 1927 Spartan Waterfall Radio and even a turn of the Century hand crank telephone – retrofitted with an I-Pad for our guests to check out our website and Facebook

BeauChapeau wants its guests to feel like they’ve stepped back in time, meanwhile experiencing cutting edge, modern fashion. Hats, in and of themselves bring most people back to that ‘Golden Hat Era’ and is the forefront of today’s fashion trends. BeauChapeau® prides itself on an almost “obsessive pursuit of hat knowledge” – especially as it relates to today’s fashions.

The next time you visit Niagara-on-Lake, be sure to visit BeauChapeau and, here, unlike many other hat stores, Kevin encourages you to try on the hats. After all, how can you know if it looks good unless you try it on?

Cheese Secrets is your key to everything cheese, whether it be for an infamous family culinary dish or cheese platter for an intimate gathering.

Eugene “the Big Cheese” and Colleen Johnson obtained ownership of the store at 38 Market Street in 2009. At the time they were still relatively new residents, moving to Niagara-on-the-Lake in 2005. “We wanted to meet our neighbours and give back to this lovely community we now call home,” said Colleen. In addition, owning a shop such as Cheese Secrets complements their love of entertaining and preparing food for family and friends. The cheese shop is a very social spot, everyone who comes by is celebrating in some manner whether it be a new engagement, a special anniversary, birthday or girls’ getaway. There’s a party atmosphere bubbling constantly at Cheese Secrets. Eugene and Colleen are sure to ask people what they are preparing with the cheese they purchase and love to share recipes and food preparation ideas. If they are buying cheese to have with crackers, they share their expertise on wine or beer pairings that would best suit their cheese choices.

“We want our visitors to feel welcome, happy and that they are visiting with friends,” explains Colleen. Engaging customers is another important aspect in their business. “We often ask a visiting group or couple to wear the “cheesehead” and pose for a facebook photo. Then we ask them to tag themselves once they see the photograph appear.”

Some of the products that make Cheese Secrets unique are hand-made artisanal cheeses and Pingue charcuterie, Tuscanlicious olive oil bottled to order and balsamic vinegars from Modena.

The store’s focus since its reopening has been on cheeses from Canada and locally-produced charcuterie, honey and jellies, as well as locally-produced unique gift items. Aged Farmhouse Cheddar from Natural Pastures in Comox, B.C. and Niagara Gold from Upper Canada Cheese in Jordan, Ontario are the shop’s best-selling products. Hilborn Pottery and Lou’s Barrel Art cheese servers, made from barrels once used to make Niagara wines are top-selling, great gift-giving ideas for the cheese connoisseur. Cheese Secrets has also included oils and vinegars in its product line.

In 2011, Cheese Secrets was presented the opportunity to showcase, sample and sell beautiful olive oils from a single family farm in Tuscany, and some delicious naturally-aged balsamic vinegars from Modena. Cheese Secrets does have extended roots in the Niagara-on-the-Lake area. The store originated as DeLuca’s Cheese on Highway 55, now home of Oast Brewery. Sold by Tony to Esther Falconer in 2008, she relocated to King Street and operated as Cheese Secrets for eight months on the site of the current Simpsons Apothecary.

Established originally by William and Mabel Greaves, Greaves Jams is a well-known household name that has been spread locally, and throughout Canada and the world since 1927.

Known for its old-fashioned look and feel, Greaves products are “jam-packed” with only the finest of ingredients; sugar, fruits, vegetables and spices, with no pectin or preservatives. Eighty-six years later, even in the midst of computers and production machinery, Greaves still produces its jams and marmalades the old-fashioned way – hand-stirring each batch in open stainless steel kettles, producing 40 wonderful flavours. The company’s product line has expanded to include no sugar spreads to accommodate the needs of health-conscious consumers.

How popular is the Greaves name? It’s so well-known in fact it was the jam of choice for former Prime Minister John Diefenbaker, who would have his secretary call every six months for an order of black currant jam.

Owner, Angela Redekopp says the store’s most popular flavour is strawberry.

In a jam for a unique Christmas gift? Greaves can help.

During the Christmas season, they are busy harvesting unique gourmet gift basket and gift box combinations that accommodate all budgets and tastes. Not only do the gourmet gift baskets contain Greaves signature products, but also other gourmet

foods produced locally and throughout Canada. The staff are more than happy to create a basket exclusive for that special someone.

The store’s location at 55 Queen Street is the original (also a historically-designated) site where the products were originally produced. When shoppers step inside the store, they are instantly greeted with an atmosphere of country charm. Old-fashioned wooden pantries and shelves house the vast product selection, with the wide, wooden floorboards complementing the old-farm house décor and feel.

The shop also had some prestigious visitors. Queen Elizabeth II visited Greaves Jams during her Niagara-on-the-Lake tour in 1973 and William Greaves Jr. was invited to a special dinner with the Queen in recognition of his contribution as former Lord Mayor of Niagara-on-the-Lake from 1950 to 1961.

In addition, former Governor General Jeanne Sauvé squeezed in a visit to the store when she was attending a gala opening of the annual Shaw Festival. It was during this visit that William Jr. joked with Her Excellency with his quip the place being so busy it was jammed.

For an old-fashioned, country store-shopping atmosphere, Angela invites all visitors to Greaves Jams and Marmalades and experience Niagara-made wholesome, all-natural products.

The Kurtz Culinary Creations concept is based on capturing the passion and produce of the land into a jar onto your table.

Even though the retail store located at 40 Queen Street has only been established for seven years, the Kurtz name extends beyond that time. The business began as an orchard by Anne’s grandparents. It wasn’t until her parents took over that the orchard products would eventually be converted into gourmet jams and jellies. It was then in 1977, that the specialty food production began with Anne’s dad stirring his first kettle of jam.

Anne says, “Most often people think the person behind the kettle was Mrs. Kurtz, however; it was Mr. Kurtz who stirred the first kettle in the basement of their home. He was the chemist of jam and jelly creations.”

Since her dad established the jams and jellies, Anne has grown the Kurtz specialty product line to incorporate bread toppers, dips, sauces and other gourmet food complements that contain ingredients made from the orchards.

With every jar comes an authenticity of taste and connection to the land. Each recipe crafted contains locally-grown ingredients and inspired by the abundance of produce the Niagara area brings. The flavours of the innovative recipes also encompass inspiration from the local wines to

bring you the best pairings possible.

With a keen eye on the markets, the Kurtz Orchards has expanded from a business that produced and sold fresh fruit and jams locally to producing and selling a wide variety of specialty food products marketed both locally and through a number of distributors. All of this led to Kurtz family receiving the Premier of Ontario’s Award for Agri-Food Innovative Excellence in 2006.

Anne says the top three sellers are Artichoke Spinach Tapenade, Sundried Tomato and the Asiago Bread Topper. Following suit are the wine jellies.

For the Christmas season or any gift-giving time, Kurtz Culinary Creations offers a huge selection of ideas for that favourite foodie on your list and even create specialized gift baskets. With a savoury selection of jams, jellies, fruit sauces, honey butters, tapenades, vinegars curds, spreads and sauces, Kurtz has something for all taste buds. The store’s country-like décor and atmosphere warmly welcomes visitors. The store offers a selection of products which you can sample before you buy.

Be sure to visit Kurtz Culinary Creations during your next visit to Niagara-on-the-Lake and take home to your table some of Niagara’s Edible Heritage.

Originating from a nation well-known for its abundance of gold and diamond resources, it’s only natural that the Mac and Shelagh Moolman would establish a fine jewellery store in Niagara-on-the-Lake.

The Moolmans, originally from Durban, South Africa, opened the doors of Niagara-on-the-Lake Jewellers and Precious Metals in February 1998 and have been rooted at their 38 Market Street location ever since.

Niagara-on-the-Lake wasn’t their first stop. In 1989, they relocated to Toronto. While in Toronto, Shelagh worked as a sales representative in a high-end fine jewellery store, while Mac was a goldsmith for Deval for two years before opening his own studio on Queen Street, providing services for trades and private collections. After completing “their time” in Toronto, Mac and Shelagh opened their store in Niagara-on the-Lake and it was perfect timing since there was no longer a fine jeweller in town.

One story they recall is of a local resident who was looking for the “best goldsmith” in Toronto. Where she had gone, someone told her “Well, if you are looking for the best goldsmith in Toronto you just missed him – he moved.” When she asked where he had moved, the response was a delightful

surprise – Niagara-on- the - Lake. “What a coincidence, that’s where I live.”

Not only do Mac and Shelagh service the local market with repairs and custom fine jewellery pieces, they also service customers from outside the area, nationally and overseas. Shelagh states that often time the visitors who just appear to be browsing will return home and phone in to buy the requested piece of jewellery that attracted their eye. Producing engagement rings and custom fine jewellery pieces keep Mac busy. A master goldsmith of 35 years, Mac has plenty of experience working with gold, platinum and all forms of precious stones.

Mac and Shelagh’s passion for finely-crafted jewellery shows from the initial concept to completion, providing their customers personalized service, quality products and expertise.

They warmly welcome visitors to their store and encourage them browse the unique selection of hand-crafted fine jewellery.

If you can dream it, they can design it.

Chocolate mountaineers Sharlene and Ron Rosinski always loved strolling and window shopping throughout Niagara-on-the-Lake. During their walkabouts, one thing they noticed was that there was no boutique or store related specifically to chocolate. With this in mind, it was a niche market that was “anxious for attention and needed to be anchored in the town.”

Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory avalanched on to Queen Street in Niagara-on-the-Lake in 2006, after two years of searching for its ideal location. However, the Rocky Mountain Chocolate name wasn’t new to the Rosinskis. When they opened their 70 Queen Street location, they had already established their first store in Niagara Falls in 2001 after retiring from successful teaching careers.

Ron says they were always interested in becoming business owners after teaching and for them, continuing to work with people was important.

And, what sweeter way to continue to work with people than offering the best quality Belgian chocolate products. About half of the store’s products are made on site by Ron himself and his chocolate artisans. Visitors can watch from the outside through the main window some of the creations being made.

Now is a popular time for the customer favourite - the Ice Wine Bombs, that explode in your mouth combining the flavours of ice wine, chocolate and caramel. For the Christmas season, gift boxes and fine artisan chocolates are top gift-giving items.

Everyday customer favourites include the candy apples, the character apples, fudge, Rocky Pop (Caramel Popcorn) and the brittles.

Ron and Sharlene are proud to serve both the locals and the tourists. “Customers are always complimenting the store,” Ron says. “Especially the smell and how great the store looks.”

The product line is continually changing and innovative. Rocky Mountain Chocolates is always experimenting with new recipes and creating masterpieces of edible, scrumptious hand crafted seasonal chocolate pieces. With every visit to Rocky Mountain Chocolate, there is sure to be a new piece for your enjoyment.

Ron and Sharlene warmly welcome everyone to their store and indulge in the mountains of fine chocolate products that will delightfully tingle your senses.

serendipityPronunciation: /ˌsˌr(ˌ)nˌdˌpˌti/

noun[mass noun]the occurrence and development of events by chance in a happy or beneficial way: a fortunate stroke of serendipity [count noun]:a series of small serendipities

Origin:1754: coined by Horace Walpole, suggested by The Three Princes of Serendip, the title of a fairy tale in which the heroes ‘were always making discoveries, by accidents and sagacity, of things they were not in quest of’

This is the definition of serendipity as published in the Oxford dictionary and is also the name of a unique boutique on Queen Street.

When Ruth Aspinall first started in 1991, it began as Kitchen Accents, with its original location inside her restaurant, The Epicurean. The original store contained a selection of French jams, mustards and table linens.

So, with that in mind, how did the name Kitchen Accents evolve into the Serendipity name? It was through a discussion with her husband about the store’s appearance and potential name change one day. He commented due to the range of products she sold, a pair of jeans or clothing

pieces here, jewellery over there and the various kitchen and gourmet food items he described the atmosphere as, “Serendipitous. You’ll never know what you’ll find.”“That’s it,” Ruth said.“That’s what?” he asked puzzled.Ruth said, “The name of the store, Serendipity.”And the store has grown from there.

Over the past 22 years, Ruth Aspinall moved to various Queen Street locations to expand the space so she could continue to specialize in French products. Ruth visits France on a regular basis to keep with the trends allowing for a fresh product line and new offerings, including jewellery, tableware and toiletries.

Over time of the store’s establishment, the No.1 best-selling product is the tablecloths, hands down. During the Christmas season it’s the eclectic sock line people love giving as gifts.

While Serendipity continues to specialize in French table linens, they also offer a wide range of giftware including Eva Gordon Ceramics, soaps, body care products, greeting cards, pashminas and jewellery.

Ruth invites everyone to stop by her store to have a “serendipitous” experience!

The Simpson name is well-rooted within the Niagara-on-the-Lake area, so much in fact it stems from 1977, the year Simpson’s Pharmacy was established in Virgil.

The Simpson family branched out to establish Simpson’s Apothecary in 2010, not only to service the local residents, but also the visitors of the Heritage District.

“It’s been warmly welcomed and embraced, a great anchor to the area,” says Owner and Pharmacist Sean Simpson. “It provides the opportunity of convenience for people to get their everyday health and beauty needs.”

With its caring friendly staff and warm, modern look, Simpson’s Apothecary emulates an atmosphere matching that of an old fashioned drug store. The staff offers professional, helpful advice and a great selection of products.

For travelers, it’s your home away from home of pharmacies.

Simpson’s Apothecary can take care of your needs from an unexpected illness or misplaced medication. Their team can contact your home pharmacy and have a temporary prescription transfer to keep you

supplied with the required medications and product you need until your vacation is complete. If visitors require mobility assistance, Simpsons Apothecary can arrange for equipment rentals with its sister store during their stay.

What some people may not know is that Simpson’s Apothecary also offers prescription compounding to accommodate individual needs. Also, their well-trained members of the pharmacy team have individual specialties and can offer expert advice on topics such as natural health care, diabetes, pain management and smoking cessation.

Want to capture the moment? New to the Apothecary this year is the Kodak Photo Kiosk. Don’t wait to have your photos printed, get them done quickly before you go home.

Simpson’s Apothecary also offers great gift-giving and stocking stuffer ideas for all ages.

The next time you visit Niagara-on-the-Lake, be sure to stop by the Apothecary, we can help you with all your health and wellness travelling needs.

If you would like to experience the best of Niagara wine country within an 1895 heritage property in downtown Niagara-on-the-Lake, Wine Country Vintners is the place to be.

When the store was opened in 2000 under the umbrella of the Andrew Peller Limited family, only wine from Peller Estates and Trius was featured.

However, over the past 13 years Wine Country Vintners has expanded to include Thirty Bench Wine Makers and Wayne Gretzky Estates and now offers a broad selection of wines to cover a wide variety of tastes. Recently renovated, our tasting bar can now accommodate more guests comfortably when enjoying a tasting experience.

Susan Young, manager of Wine Country Vintners explains that, originally, the goal of the store was to offer guests the opportunity to enjoy a world-class wine experience in downtown Niagara-on-the-Lake if they could not visit one of the wineries.

“Over time, we have expanded our wine and accessory portfolio to offer the best selections for the most experienced wine consumer to the new wine enthusiast,” Susan says. Wine and Icewine tastings are hosted by a highly trained and engaged team of wine consultants who lead the guests through tasting experiences of table wines, sparkling wines and, of course,

Icewines with the objective of showcasing the best of our Niagara vineyards.

Wine Country Vintners has the largest selection of Icewine available for purchase and tasting and it is one of the store’s most popular products. Susan said that customers literally come from around the world to taste and purchase this unique and highly coveted treat from Niagara vineyards. Plus, Wine Country Vintners is now the exclusive Niagara-on-the-Lake location for tasting and purchasing Wayne Gretzky Estates wines. In addition to the vast wine collection, Wine Country Vintners offers an extensive selection of accessories for the wine and food enthusiast. Wine Country Vintners carries unique serving ware made from local wine barrels – a great way to up-cycle barrels that are no longer used for wine-making. We are also well-known for our extensive and unique selection of wine decanters from both Riedel and Eisch with some being limited collector editions. Perfect for all levels of wine enthusiasts. Prior to housing Wine Country Vintners, 27 Queen Street was the Niagara-on-the-Lake branch of the CIBC. We are the only place in NOTL where you will find wine stored in a bank vault.
