Inside The Earth- Three Layers

Core- the center of the earth. Divided into a solid inner core and an outer core of melted, liquid metal.

Mantle- The mantle is around the core, it is a rock layer about 1,800 miles thick. Mantle rock is mostly solid, but in it are pockets of magma, that flows to the surface when a volcano erupts.

Crust- The outer layer of the earth’s surface, 5 to 30 miles thick. The only layer that scientists have studied firsthand.

Plate Tectonics

A scientific theory that states that the crust is not an unbroken shell but consists of moving plates, or huge slabs of rock.

These plates fit together like a jigsaw puzzle.

For billions of years, continents have been moving away or toward each other in a process known as continental drift.
