PROGRAM NOTES
LAND OF THE RISING SUN explores the folk music of Japan through a trio of contrasting traditional Japanese songs: Sakura (Cherry Blossom), Night Star, and Hana-Ichi Momme, a popular children’s game.
NOTES TO THE CONDUCTOR
The Percussion I part calls for a floor tom and/or snare drum. Although one player is sufficient, it will make for a more effective performance if a number of percussionists play this part on various toms. You may even wish to bring your snare and tom players to the front as a feature of their Taiko-style performance.
Either a soloist or a couple flutists may play the flute part beginning at measure 5. In either case, add the rest of the section at measure 15.
The return of Sakura in the low winds, beginning at measure 62, must be heard above the upper winds and percussion.
I hope you and your students find LAND OF THE RISING SUN to be a fun and worthwhile musical experience.
