JULY Today is the 4th of July. When Inde-pendence Day falls on a weekday, the American Church celebrates with pray-

ers proper for the day. We cannot do that on a Sunday, but I placed the Collect from the Mass for Independence Day as the closing prayer of the General Intercessions. Today is a good day to remember our country in our prayers. We were founded upon lofty principals, and while we have not fully lived up to them throughout our history, we must keep striving toward them for, while born of the Enlightenment, liberty, freedom, unity, jus-tice, and equality are rooted in God. Let us ask God to help us eliminate the sins of society and the corruption of the human heart which deny these principals for all peo-ples. Andy DiVicino of Universal Building Controls gave some of us a lesson on Thursday on how to use the new control system for the church’s heating and cooling. This system is state of the art. I cannot summarize all it does, but it is very smart. We are able to access it and view, for instance, a diagram of the boiler room to see what zones are receiving heat. Another diagram demon-strates the temperature in each of the zones along with the outdoor temperature. The system monitors CO2 levels and opens the vent in the air handling room as needed (when CO2 reaches 800 parts to a million) to bring in air from outdoors. It records the day’s activity, too. Andy showed us the chart from last Sunday, and we could see the peaks and valleys. The highest peak occurred at 8 p.m. Clearly, the Brazilian Mass was most heavily popu-lated and required more oxygenated air from outside. The former system was supposed to do the same, but this aspect was part of its failure. The system will even send us an email when there is a problem of some sort. All in all, the building will be much better and more efficiently served by this system. One final note on the system, Andy was able to tie in the vestibule units. Installed in the 1975 work on the church, they had to be turned on manually for heat. Now they will respond to a thermo-stat. We were very fortunate to find Andy and to work with him. Maybe I should say fortunate that he agreed to take our project. As I told you, the former company was never able to respond to our satisfaction to the problems of the system that they installed. We did not want them back. Other companies that Rick Palanzo called did not return the call. Andy not only responded, he was eager to work for the good of a church, and he went the extra mile, submitting our project to Eversource for an energy efficiency grant. As I mentioned some weeks past, the grant totaled $6,000, nearly half the cost of the project. We are very grateful to Andy and look forward to a long-term working relationship. Have a relaxing 4th of July weekend. And, by the way, our offices are closed on Monday so that our employees and clergy can have the federal holilday.
