After stumbling from the gate with a 1-3 non-league record, the Barons found their groove in a come-from-behind victory over rival Donegal and got better with every start. Manheim won 16 straight to nail down the L-L Section Three title, then swept its way to the league title, defeating Conestoga Valley, 2-1 in the championship game, one of two titles that eluded the Barons in 2011. A 3-2 championship game victory over Greencastle-Antrim delivered Manheim’s second straight District Three Class AAA title, ensuring Manheim’s return to the PIAA State tournament. Running its consecutive victory streak to 25 straight games, Manheim reached the state semifinals before a heart-breaking loss to Valley View brought an end to the season, one step short of the ultimate goal.

CARYN BAILEY,Elizabethtown

Softball

Arguably one of the best players to ever step onto an L-L softball diamond, Elizabethtown’s Caryn Bailey broke on the scene as a freshman designated player, then took over as catcher her sophomore year where she remained the next three seasons. After hitting .403 and .437 her first two years, she bloomed to .516 as a junior, following that with a .525 average her senior season, pushing her career average to .461. With opponents pitching around her her senior year, if they pitched to her at all, Bailey was moved to the leadoff position where she set career highs in runs scored (37) and homers (12).

Boys’ Volleyball Coach of the Year

CHRIS TELESCO, Penn ManorPenn Manor’s run to the Lancaster-Lebanon

League title was fashioned over several seasons. Telesco groomed his senior players, like the outside hitter/setter tandem of Dylan Weber and twin brother Cheyenne, along with Dayonte Dixon, Joey Jackson and Colby Sangrey. Devon Reis and Mark Dano, both juniors, have already become strong players under Telesco’s tutelage.

Boys’ Volleyball

When assessing Weber’s play, his coach, Chris Telesco, said he possessed the one thing that every coach wants in a player: desire. That desire made him work harder and push longer than others. That desire and the resultant work ethic made Weber, who finished his high school career with 1,010 kills, successful, and ultimately, the Comets, too.

Fairbanks, a senior at E-town, won the shot put and discus titles at both the L-L League and District Three Championship meets. Fairbanks then took third in the discus and fourth in the shot put at the PIAA Championship Meet. Her throw of 41-8.5 to win the district shot put crown was a school record. A multi-sport athlete, Fairbanks will attend Saint Joseph's University on a basketball scholarship.

BY PETE KAUFFMANSports Staff

The athletic résumé is impressive. The intangibles, though, are what really

separate Kyle Felpel from most of his scho-lastic peers.

“God has infused that kid with a lot of talent, but he’s worked at it. He studies. He trains. He does what-ever he can to make him-self better,’’ Ron Derr, Cocalico’s head track coach, said of Felpel.

“One of things I have been so proud of is he’s accomplished so much, but done

Always pushing to be his bestso with dignity and honor. He represents himself, his school and his team in the ut-most fashion.’’

Felpel has been a shining example of a student-athlete at Cocalico, earning all-state honors in track and field after claiming the Class AAA gold medal in the shot put, silver medal in the jave-lin and bronze medal in the discus at this year’s PIAA Championships.

He was also named the L-L League Section Two Defensive Lineman of the Year, First Team at defensive end, Sec-ond Team at wide receiver and Honorable Mention at punter for the Eagles’ football team.

“A lot of people have God-given ability, but there

are very few that use

those gifts to the best of his ability,’’ Eagles football coach

Dave Gingrich said. “Kyle’s one of those kids.’’

To cap his highly success-ful scholastic career, Felpel

was also named the Lancaster News-

papers Male Athlete of the Year.

He beat out contend-ers Kyle Long

of Hempfield (track and field),

Robbie Cardina of Conestoga Val-

ley (football, soccer, basketball, track), So-

lanco’s Joe Welk (foot-ball, wrestling, track)

and Thomas Haines (soccer, wrestling) for the

honor.“That’s pretty crazy,’’ Felpel said

when informed of winning the award. “Man, there’s a lot of

great athletes. This is pretty awesome.’’

Awesome is a pretty good word to describe Felpel, who will study

engineering at the University of Ala-bama this fall, where he received an

athletic scholarship.“He certainly brought some amazing

athletic abilities to the table, but his drive and desire to win and his work ethic, that’s what stands out the most,’’ Doug Reynolds, the throwing coach at Alabama, said of Fel-pel.

Reynolds said that he will not hold Fel-pel back from all four events — shot put, discus, javelin, hammer — but “something will eventually develop as his strong suit.

“I certainly don’t want to make him a

jack-of-all-trades. ... I’d much rather have him be really outstanding in one event, than be just OK in three or four,’’ Reynolds added. “If we have to specialize, we do. For him, we’ll let it go and let him try (all four).’’

Giving Felpel a free rein has worked in high school. He didn’t win his first shot-put competition as a freshman, then won every dual meet from then on. He’s a three-time L-L League and District Three meet champ in that event, and has made his mark na-tionally.

“He’s just a special, special athlete,’’ Cocalico throwing coach Scott Krall said. “You’re talking about someone who might be the best all-around thrower Pennsylva-nia has ever seen.’’

Many top throwers have excelled at the shot put or the discus or the javelin. A top-three finish in all three events at one state championship meet, like Felpel did this spring, is believed to be a first in PIAA his-tory.

Among some of the highlights of his shot-put career are a second-place finish in the New Balance Indoor Nationals and wins at the PTFCA Indoor Carnival, Albright and Franklin & Marshall College Invitationals this winter, a victory at the Bruce Dallas Invitational this spring as well as a fourth-place finish in the Penn Relays.

He was set to compete in the Junior Worlds in Bloomington, Ind., June 15-17,

hoping to earn a place on the Junior Olym-pic squad, which will compete in Spain July 10-15.

Derr said he feels Felpel may just be a once-in-a-lifetime athlete, although he hopes to find another like him down the road.

As for Felpel, he deflects those kind of compliments. He said he tried to embody the Mahatma Ghandhi philosophy: You must be the change you want to see in the world.

“I just try to be a good example for oth-ers to follow,’’ Felpel said. “I know I can do some amazing things (athletically), but I’d like to be a good person, someone my coaches and my peers can respect.’’

[email protected]

Kyle Felpel, bound for the University of Alabama, has been a standout competitor in-football and track and field for Cocalico.

Devon SchneiDerManheiM TownShip aThleTeS of The Year 2011-12

BY MATT BLYMIERSports Staff

Take skills such as power, technique and precision and add intangibles like work ethic, IQ, drive, desire and dedication.

Pack all of that into a 6-foot, 1-inch frame and put that athlete on a volleyball court and a lacrosse field.

What you get is one of the best volley-ball players in the state and one of the top lacrosse players in the country.

What you get is Devon Schneider. For her achievements on the field and

behind the net, Schneider has been named Lancaster Newspapers Female Athlete of the Year.

The Manheim Township senior was cho-sen over a strong field of candidates that included Elizabethtown’s Sarah Fairbanks, Warwick’s Emily Cameron and Lancaster Mennonite’s Jess Rheinheimer.

For Schneider, playing lacrosse was a given, while her path to the volleyball court was unexpected.

She didn’t start playing volleyball until her freshman year at the encouragement of her mom.

Three games into her freshman season, Schneider was called up to the varsity. As a sophomore, she was an All-Section One honorable mention selection. Her junior year, she was named All-Section One and was a District Three All-Star. She repeated those accomplishments as a senior and added an All-State selection to her list of accolades.

“You’re talking about a top-level ath-lete,” former Township volleyball coach Terry Hutchinson said. “Probably one of the top 1 or 2 percent in the state.

“She had athleticism and court awareness from the beginning and you can tell when an athlete has that. She picked up on the game quickly and quickly learned the details of volleyball.”

Schneider’s early memories of lacrosse were of watching her dad coach the Milton (Ga.) lacrosse team when she was in elementary school.

“I was always on the sideline with a stick in my hand,” Schneider recalled.

Schneider, who was also a

All the right ingredientsLevel 10 gymnast in elementary school, and her family later moved to Pennsylva-nia. She began playing organized lacrosse for the first time in fifth grade. By the time she reached high school, said Township coach Mark Pinkerton, Schneider started showing glimpses of how good she could become.

“In seventh and eighth grade, she was really good,” said Pinkerton, who has coached Schneider since fifth grade. “By ninth grade she started to separate herself from the other players. She started to grow (in height) and her confidence and ability started to show.”

As a freshman, Schneider earned the first of four All-L-L League First Team se-lections and helped her team to the first of four District Three championships. By her sophomore year, she was named the L-L’s Player of the Year, an award she would get the rest of her scholastic career.

None of those individual awards mattered as much as her team’s success, according to Pinkerton.

“She’s a consummate team player,” Pinkerton said. “She’s much more interested in how the team does rather than what she has achieved. I can’t say enough about her leadership and her desire for the team to win.”

Hutchinson agreed.“She’s an all-Amer-

ican on the field and off the field,” he said.

“She’s as

humble as they come and always credits her teammates.”

By the time Schneider finished her high school career, she had been named a U.S. Lacrosse All-American three times, landed on the Under Armour All-America team, which goes to only 44 players in the country, earned a partial scholarship to the University of Florida and is considered the best girls’ lacrosse player to ever come out of this area.

“We’ve had some good players in the area (District Three),” Pinkerton said. “But when you factor in Devon’s all-around — offense, defense and draw controls — she’s the most complete player we’ve ever had.”

Florida coach Amanda O’Leary sees the same things in Schneider.

“We knew she was a special player who had a ton of potential,” O’Leary wrote in an email. “She had very good size and was able to get up and down the field with ease.

She could play at both ends of the field.“We believe Devon is a great fit for

our program and we have very high expectations of her and what she can achieve.”

Schneider said she’s ready for the next step in her academic and

athletic career but she’s enjoyed ev-ery bit of the ride getting there.

“It’s been amazing,” she said. “It’s more than I

could have ever asked for.”

After a notable scholastic career in lacrosse and volleyball at Manheim Township, Devon Schneider’s next stop is the University of Florida.
