Bits & Pieces PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

December is around the corner, the month of good will and generosity. It almost feels like the month has already arrived at our Guild. The Christmas sale, now behind us, is a measure of all that is good in our Guild. Everyone participated by sharing ideas at our meetings, donating items, offering quilted treasures for consignment and/or on Sale Day volunteering to do the heavy lifting or serving the ravenous public. Thank you to our event guru and V.P. Linda Lake and the hard working Sale Committee for a fun and successful day.

There are many examples of this generosity and good will found throughout the year, both at our meetings and Guild activities. New members, guests and speakers will often comment on the warmth and consideration they encounter. At Lanark County Quilters Guild positions are filled, tasks are accomplished, often with personal lives put temporarily on hold. In this last Newsletter of 2019, let’s pat ourselves on the back for a job well done! To each and every member I thank you and wish you and yours a most joyous Holiday Season. The Executive Officers and Coordinators in the Management Team wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

NOVEMBER MANAGEMENT (EXECUTIVE) MEETING REPORT 2019

November 13th, 2019 President Nijole Deskin called the meeting to order at 10:34am. Nijole thanked everyone for coming and thanked the Lanark Lifestyles Residence for allowing us to use the facility.

Attendance: Nijole Deskin, Linda Lake, Louise Gour, Diane Gallagher, Mary Cunningham, Jane Burke and Peggy Cowle.

The Minutes of the October Management Meeting were read, accepted and all were in favour.

TREASURER: The Treasurer’s Report was read, accepted and all were in favour.

PRESIDENT: Nijole indicated that the new Bylaws are now posted to our website.

Nijole proposed the disposal of the wooden racks from storage. They will be offered first to Guild members and then re-maining racks will be donated. A motion was put forward by Mary to accept the proposed disposal of the wood racks. It was seconded by Peggy, and all were in favour.

Nijole presented correspondence received regarding the proposed projector purchase. A cost analysis will be done on the purchase versus rental options with a list of events and activities where the projector would be used. A review will be presented at a 2020 management meeting.

As co-chair for QOTT, Nijole presented an update on the July QOTT show. We already have 17 vendors signed up/

VICE-PRESIDENT: Linda provided an update on Sew Days. Currently there’s low attendance in this new guild program. Perhaps a signup sheet for sew days would bring awareness to the event and list who will be attending.

The Quilt Time event that is scheduled for Dec 12th. Socks is the theme.

Christmas sale was successful. Linda will be having a “post mortem” meeting with the committee members.

SECRETARY: Louise has started storing Guild related electronic files (minutes, newsletters etc.) on Google OneDrive.

BLOCK OF THE MONTH: Mary showed everyone the block for the November general meeting.

MEMBERSHIP: Jane will be following up with members who still haven’t renewed. The membership directory has been published and distributed at October’s meeting.

PROGRAMS: Linda is in the process of coordinating workshops with Andrea Tsang and Celine Alleart of Blue Calla for the new year. More information will be coming up soon.

PUBLICITY: Moira sent her regrets. Nijole provided an update on the QOTT book marks, 5000 have been printed but the back is slightly off center. The printer has offered to give a credit or to reprint them. A motion was put forward by Jane to accept the book marks as printed and take advantage of the credit offered by the printer. It was seconded by Louise, and all were in favour.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS: Nijole will be presenting an update on the History of LCQG project at our January manage-ment meeting.

NEW BUSINESS: A member has asked if they can bring antique, family or story quilts for the monthly meeting Show and Tell. It was agreed that it would be acceptable to include this category of quilts as part of our monthly meetings.

LCQG GENERAL MEETING MINUTES

October 22, 2019 President Nijole Deskin called the meeting to order at 6:57 pm. There were 101 members and 7 visitors in attendance.

Nijole welcomed everyone. She welcomed visitors by name and distributed name tags to new members.

VICE-PRESIDENT: Linda Lake reminded everyone that tonight is the last evening for donations for the Christmas sale scheduled for November 9th. Linda reminded everyone that the QT will be on December 11th and the theme is socks. We will be serving a luncheon. You will need to bring a fat quarter for a fun game.

TREASURER: The GIC investment in the financials was fund raised from the 2003 rural expo plowing match.

Minerva Osborne still needs volunteers to help out in the kitchen for the Christmas sale on November 9th.

Mary Cunningham, BLOCK OF THE MONTH, showed everyone the Maple Leaf block for this month.

Kathy Harper, OUTREACH, this year’s pattern is fun and easy. Kathy reminded the members that have picked up a block kit to please bring them back completed for the next guild meeting.

Alexis Mongeau reminded everyone of the stay at home retreat and mentioned that there’s been a date change. The dates are now November 18th and 19th. The venue has also changed to a local church.

Hope Bell will be leading the 2019/2020 guild challenge. The challenge is related to your birthday flower and gemstone.

You can pick up the challenge details from Hope. The challenge will be due and showcased at the May 2020 general guild meeting.

Bill Stearman was our guest speaker. He presented his quilts as a journey through his life. He highlighted how each one of his quilts tells storey. Nijole thanked Bill for coming and presenting to our Guild.

Lanark County Quilter Guild annual Social event: There is still time to register for QT at the November meeting. $15.00 and your choice of Lasagna or Shepherds Pie. Please mark your choice when reg-istering.

Come and enjoy the day with fellow guild members. Bring hand sewing or hand work if you wish and socialize with fellow members. Get to know mem-bers that you have never met before. Share laugh's and games and win door prizes.

Remember the theme this year is Socks, stockings or anything you think of that means socks. Remember those crazy wool hats that Marks Work Wear-house sold a few years ago, knitted hats with two socks sticking out of them? Has anyone ever seen a hula skirt made with x-mas stockings? If I could knit I would make mittens that looked like work socks, but i can't.

How about a vest made out of Christmas material that has stockings on it?

The craziest idea might just win the fashion show viewers choice prize.

Gateway to Adventure - CQA Member Guild Challenge This is a Canadian Quilters' Association (CQA) challenge for its member guilds. One lucky member of our guild will have your project on display at Quilt Canada in June 2020 in Edmonton! This year the theme is “Gateway to Adventure”. Refer to the Quilt Canada website for more information about all of the requirements for these quilts (e.g. finishing, hanging sleeve, label etc.) There is also a Printable Version of this information.

2020 Guild Challenge

The theme is birthdays. The chal-lenge this year is a quilted item

which includes your birth flower as well as your birth gemstone color, with a maximum perimeter of 150".

The sign up and information sheets will be at the Program Table.

Christmas Sale—Thank you November 09 Christmas Sale was an outstanding success be-cause of all the wonderful donations from each and every one of our guild members that were kind enough to support the guild. Also because of all the guild members that volunteered countless hours to organizing those donations, making kits, pricing, making table center pieces, working at the sale and those making the best display for the sale, we thank you.

We also would like to thank all those members that donated food so that we could present a nice lunch and those that shared their time and energy in the kitchen and serving those lunches. 103 tickets were sold for the lunch.

We certainly cannot forget those great husbands , so thank you to them for doing the heavy lifting and moving of tables, racks from the lockup and helping everyone without being asked.

I would love to list you by name but the newsletter is just not big enough. Please accept my thanks for such wonderful sup-port and all the time and effort that each of you put in to make our guild sale a success. Linda Lake VP
