Shop LightingToday’s Shoppers are more demanding than ever before. They want

the freedom and flexibility to enjoy a shopping experience that

matches their personal values and tastes. At the same time they

appreciate sharing the experience with other like minded people.

They want to be entertained and educated whilst shopping. And they

expect the products they buy to have been produced in a

responsible and sustainable way.

Philips closely follows these trends in developing its own innovations.

Future lighting solutions will have to be as unobtrusive and natural as

possible, whilst still obviously serving their functional purpose and

keeping the running costs under control. They could be enriched with

colors, even provide theatrical effects and support the creation of an

in-shop community. Light will be integrated into shop designs and

furniture.

The need for miniaturization, led us for example to introduce in 2004

our miniMASTER Colour system. This provides all the benefits of our

MASTERColour range which was first launched more than 10 years

ago.Today we have developed a complete range of Lamps & gear

systems to serve the different needs in shop lighting.

We don’t just improve standards, we set them.

Lamps and Gear Introduction 1.17Introduction Lamps and Gear1.16

Introduction

Nowadays, people are becoming more concerned about their working

environment. This concern stems from various factors including the

trends towards a healthier lifestyle, change in business modes and the

increased importance of communication. Employers are keen on an

environment which generates maximum productivity from employees

and the minimum running costs. And the employees naturally demand

a comfortable environment which allows them to perform at their

best. With different demands come different office configurations and

structures. And that’s why you’ll need different lighting solutions to

accommodate specific needs.

Philips closely follows these trends in developing its own innovations.

For example our MASTER TL5 lamps & gear systems – the original

16mm fluorescent lamps – offers a solution for all these issues. The

MASTER TL5 lamps run exclusively on electronic control gear, so

allowing the best energy efficient solution and the use of lighting

control systems.

Introduction

Research has consistently demonstrated that quality industrial lighting

is good not only for people’s health and well-being but also their

ability to perform tasks quickly and free from error. This is especially

true for industry which requires detailed work or long-term shifts.

By offering higher illuminance, a quality industrial lighting system will

make it easier for your staff to perform difficult tasks. It will also

reduce fatique, tiredness and stress among your workers. Staff who

are able to stay comfortable, alert and productive for longer will in

turn significantly reduce the number of failures and rejects in your

production runs.

A brightly lit workplace is clearly a much safer workplace.

In this ultra competitive market more and more forward-thinking

companies are using their factories as promotional selling tools,

showcases – to create an overall impression of quality, innovation and

high-tech efficiency. The factory tour as part of a customer visit, and

the quality of the associated meeting rooms and presentations play a

central role, as part of this strategy.

Good quality lighting, meeting the latest legislative demands, over the

main production areas will create the right image of a clean, modern,

efficient and productive environment.

Lamps and Gear Introduction 1.21Introduction Lamps and Gear1.20

Introduction

Today, outdoor lighting is expected to do much more than simply enable

us to see at night. Lighting has also become an essential tool that is

widely used to create a more welcoming environment. Outdoor lighting,

therefore now has both functional and decorative roles to play. In

addition, the wide choice of lamps available means that there are many

outdoor lighting solutions for each application area.

Road and tunnel lighting improves traffic safety for everyone on the

road, and at the same time provides guidance and orientation, especially

during bad weather. The requirement is for lighting that is both functional

and economical, combining optimum safety with the lowest costs of

ownership. Reliability is essential, as traffic congestion during spot

replacement of premature failures can be very expensive.

Urban lighting covers streets, parks and squares, shopping and leisure

areas in city centers and can serve a decorative as well as an amenity

role. In addition to safety and orientation, it is capable of providing

comfort, ambience, identity and even spectacle, helping to create a new

and beautiful nightscape for residents and visitors alike.

Urban architectural lighting of buildings, bridges, statues and gardens

can also help to create a nightscape even more striking than the same

area as seen by day.

The choice of lighting for residential areas, once made solely on

functional criteria, is increasingly influenced by a perceived need for

improved amenity, and improved vision for safety. As a result, high-quality

white light is now making an appearance.

Join us in our efforts to enhance people’s lives with light and improve

the living conditions in our cities by making use of tomorrow’s

technology. This catalogue offers you the technological ‘foundations of

change’ to do the job.
