After sweating and being scorched all summer, the hint of cool weather greeted me this morning. I thought of you all on playground duty (el ementary teachers) and know you are enjoying this reprieve from temperatures in the 100s. Our chapter has come up with some “refreshing” plans to keep us all involved and energetic. Our initiation meeting held at Christi Chrisman’s lovely home was well attended and enjoyed by all. We are thrilled to welcome six new members and two transfers. I know they each will c ontribute greatly to our chapter. Denise Loftin, Ceremonies Chair, int roduced a new initiation ceremony provided by Alpha State. The members were pleased with the changes in this meaningful and cherished ceremony. In my last message I spok e about attending our State Convention in Mc Allen in June. I forgot to mention the convention Unifying Project (UP) which was Texas Treasure Boxes filled with toys and activities given to chronic ally ill children in hospitals in Area V (McAllen area). Each chapter brought at least one box to convention. Lambda Sigma brought 4 boxes filled with the educ ational and fun items you contributed. I am proud to say that Delta Kappa Gamma ladies are exceptionally generous. Over 1100 boxes were distributed to these ill children. We even had items left over t o contribute to the Women’s Shelter. I hope you will be able to attend our meeting at 4:30 on Wednesday, September 21, at Lexington Creek Elementary. Linda Russell has planned an informati ve and enjoyable program. Please bring school/art supplies for the Juv enile Detention Center. We would like to start coll ecting the items for our contribution to them. If you have not paid your dues, bring your check book. We have not raised our dues. Active members - $80. Reserve members - $30. We will also have a wonderful raf fle that you w ill want to win. Fondly, Cathie Ritchie

President's Message

Dear Lambda Sigma Sisters,

Welcome back to another exciting school year! After sweating and being scorched all summer, thehint of cool weather greeted me this morning. I thought of you all on playground duty (elementaryteachers) and know you are enjoying this reprieve from temperatures in the 100s. Our chapter has comeup with some “refreshing” plans to keep us all involved and energetic.

Our initiation meeting held at Christi Chrisman’s lovely home was well attended and enjoyed by all.We are thrilled to welcome six new members and two transfers. I know they each will contribute greatlyto our chapter. Denise Loftin, Ceremonies Chair, introduced a new initiation ceremony provided byAlpha State. The members were pleased with the changes in this meaningful and cherished ceremony.

Juvenile Detention Center project to our September meeting. We willtake up your donation at each meeting. Thisfacility looks forward to our contribution eachyear.

Dress for Success

Lambda Sigma has a new project we are goingto adopt this year. It is called Dress for Success. The mission of Dress for SuccessHouston is to promote the economicindependence of disadvantaged women byproviding professional attire, a network of support and the career development tools tohelp women thrive in work and in life. We willhave a Suite Drive to collect business-

appropriate attire for donation to Dress for Success. So please do not discard or donateyour “better clothes” that you no longer wear.We want to help women in our area to be able todress appropriately for their job interviews.Clothing accessories will also be appreciated.You will hear more about this at our meetings.

Mini Grants

Is there a workshop, conference, training, or some sort of professional development youare dying to attend, but due to budgetrestraints you are unable to attend? Thenapply for a mini-grant.

The maximum amount available per member is $500. Applicants must havebeen a member of the Texas StateOrganization for a minimum of five years

before June 1 of the application year.

The application is available fromHeadquarters or on the Alpha State websitewww.alphastatetexas.org   Applicants areencouraged to return all documentation inone envelope to State ScholarshipChairman Barbara Derrick, 4214 Bolton Ave,Santa Fe 77510. Mini-grants are giventwice a year with an October 1 and March 1deadline.

Cinderella/Cinderfella Project

To all our CCP team. When you wonder where all the money, time and effort goes,look at Oumou. She has only been in theU.S. for a couple of years and yet, she is soeloquent. Van, her social worker, Oumouand I met last week, and we will continue tohelp her reach her goals. She is anexceptional student and wants to go tocollege, stay in touch and volunteer for usthis coming year 

I have many more thank you notes to sharewith you and will do so in the next fewweeks. Sorry about the delays - lots of computer problems and other priorities gotin the way. But, this just came today and Iwanted to make sure you got it right away!!!!

Ready to get started again? We are stillgetting dresses and some of you have kindlyvolunteered to help.

Many of the dress donations are now goingto My Cleaners. They have 2 locations -please visit our website for addresses andphone numbers. They are accepting the

donations, checking them to see if they needto be cleaned and/or repaired! This is our first time to have this and we are so happyto welcome them to our team. Thank you,My Cleaners!

In the next couple of weeks, I will be sending

a list of what help we need and we hope youwill let us know what fits you best

Jennifer Johnson has been teaching atLexington Creek Elementary for 10 years.She grew up in this area attending wonderfulFBISD schools which in turn made me wantto go into teaching. Jennifer went from highschool to Blinn Junior College in Brenhamgraduating with her associates. She thentransferred to Sam Houston and startedstudies toward her degree in ElementaryEducation with an emphasis on math andearly childhood. Jennifer graduated fromSam in December of 2000. She is marriedto her high school sweetheart who alsoworks in the district as a band director.They have two wonderful children, Nathan(8) and Andrew (5) and both are LCE lions.Jennifer feels honored to be apart of such awonderful group of fellow women educatorsand looks forward to getting to know all of you.

Suzanne Nealis a nativeTexan fromArlington. Shemarried her high schoolsweetheart at

age 19 and has been married for 32 years.Vernon and Suzanne have 2 children thatboth graduated from college and no longer 

live at home. Suzanne has been aneducator for 25 years. She received her Elementary Education degree from TexasWesleyan College in Fort Worth. Her teaching career began in Grand Prairie in1986. Vernon received a job transfer in 1992and they moved to Richmond. Suzannewas honored at LCISD Frost ElementaryTeacher of the Year in 2004. Suzannecurrently teaches first grade and Reading

Recovery at Mission Bend Elementary. Sheenjoys camping, reading, cruising, andmotorcycle riding in her spare time.

It took Janienne Brownawhile to figure out whatshe wanted to be whenshe grew up, but shefinally found her dream

 job, and what she loves todo! Janienne started outworking in psychiatrichospitals with behavior modification and

supplementing with waitressing to pay thebills. She then went into teaching and gotmy teaching credentials from San DiegoState University and worked for one monthas a bilingual teacher. (She is not bilingualby the way!) She then moved to Texaswhere she worked for eight years as a thirdgrade teacher in Dallas. Janienne was luckyto stay at home for five years and then wentback to get her master’s degree. She is nowa librarian with Fort Bend and in love with

her job. Janienne’s work as a behavior modification counselor, teacher, and momhas contributed to who she is today anddoing the job she believes she was born todo. Janienne says she can bore anyone sillytalking about anything having to do with kidsand books and technology. She finds herself going on and on, and realizing she may notbe at all interesting, but passionate aboutwhat she does; just ask her family!Janienne’s family is number one; with her 

husband of almost 25 years and her daughter Ayla, a senior this year, and her son a 7th grader. She would not have her 

 journey any other way. Janienne has twonotes by her computer with my kidsprofessing their love for me, and of courseher husband showing his love for her byputting up with her ranting, and emptying thedishwasher! She feels beyond blessed withthe joy her family and job bring to her daily.

On Saturday, September the 24th, at 11:00am, Christie Chrisman will show a video of the Ignite Deregulated Energy Plan. Ignite isan opportunity for substantial income. Thetime could possibly change. She decided tobe a part of this organization because she isa retired FBISD teacher and wanted extraincome each month. The basic plan is toget a few people to use Stream as their electricity provider and teach others how todo the same thing. Stream has verycompetitive rates. Christie will be serving

We would like to recycle the “2010 DeltaKappa Gamma Meeting Date reminders”that Debbie Reynolds made. They have ared bow and red rose on them and can berecycled to use again. Please bring your oldreminder to the September meeting.

The new “2011-2012 Meeting DateReminders” were passed out at the initiation

meeting and will be available in September for those who were not able to join us for thefirst meeting.

Delta Kappa Gamma Lambda Sigma ChapterAugust 20, 2011, 1:00 p.m.At the home of Christi Chrisman

President Cathie Ritchie called the meeting to order at 1:20.I. Initiation – We would like to welcome our new members to Lambda Sigma. They are: Janienne

Brown, Jennifer Johnson, Janet Lavong, Gwen Mead, Melissa Milligan, and Suzanne Neal. We wouldalso like to welcome Charlotte Conner who has transferred to our chapter.

II. Joan Eubanks read an inspirational story about being yourself and accepting who you are.III. The minutes of the last meeting were approved and accepted.IV. Reports

A. Ann Thompson (Finance Chair) delivered the Treasurer’s report and explained how our dues areallocated. The treasury currently has $1608.52.Dues are: $80 active, $30 reserve, $10 initiation

i. An order form for Delta Kappa Gamma pins & badges will be sent to the new members.If you would like to place an order, please let Cathie Ritchie or Dale Araujo know.

B. First-Vice-President, Linda Russell, highlighted the planned programs presented in newsletter.i. Votes were taken on the December holiday celebration. and the dates for the December 

get together and the Saturday, January 7 meeting.ii. Our holiday celebration will be an appetizer buffet on Thursday, December 8. If you

would like to volunteer your home for the celebration, please contact Linda Russell.iii. The Saturday, January 7, program is health related. We will have a Zumba lesson

followed by lunch at a restaurant. This would be a fun meeting to invite prospective newmembers.

iv. Friday, March 2 is planned as Bunco Night.C. Second Vice-President, Sally Cain, reported there were 34 members and one guest in attendance. She

also explained for those who have 100% attendance at all of the six business meetings will have their name put into a drawing. The winner will have her dues paid for the 2012-2013 year.

D. Yearbook Chairman, Mary Crochet, asked for all members to review their information so it will be

correct in the yearbook.E. Communications Chairman, Barb Hansen, asked for any news to go into our newsletter be sent to her 

at the beginning of each month. If you would like to receive a hard copy of the newsletter instead of receiving it electronically, please send Barb six self addressed, stamped envelopes.

i. Our chapter now has a Facebook page. Please visit it.E. Jeannette Spain, Professional Affairs chair, read a Thank You letter from last year’s scholarshiprecipient.

V. New BusinessA. Delta Kappa Gamma Song – At our next meeting we will vote on how our chapter would like to sing

the Delta Kappa Gamma song. Choices are:i. Entire song sung at each meeting

ii. One verse sung at each meetingiii. Entire song sung at only Initiation and Spring Luncheon

B. Rafflesi. Five committees go together to provide raffles for meetings on September 21, October 

18, and February 15ii. The raffles are open to other members of your faculties.

C. Carla Meuth discussed ways to raise money for our chapter.i. A vote was taken and passed on sewing Kindle/iPad/computer sleeves to be sold at

various schools’ fundraisers. We will need volunteers for a Sewing committee.ii. The home in CO will also be auctioned off two times. Available times are Thanksgiving

 break, Spring break, some weeks in June, and some weeks in Aug. Look for the auctionsite soon.

A Thank you was extended to Linda Russell for earning our chapter the Annie Award for outstanding programs, Christi Chrisman for hosting the meeting at her home, Debbie Reynolds for making themeeting reminder cards, Margaret Larson, Mary Crochet, and Christi Chrisman for the refreshments,the Music committee for the entertaining song, and Denise Loftin and her committee for the initiationceremony.

B. Our next meeting is Wednesday, September 21, 4:30, at Lexington Creek Elem.C. All of the meeting dates were listed in the last newsletter.D. September raffle provided by:
