JESUS: The Lamb of God
John 1:29, 36 John the Baptist
John the Baptist was beginning his
ministry as PROPHET and
forerunner of the Messiah.
John the Baptist describes Jesus as
“the Lamb of God that takes away the SIN of
the world.”
This was probably in the SPRING at the time of Passover. When John calls
Jesus a Lamb, the Passover is what
most people would think about.
Historical Background- 1st Passover
(1500 years earlier) Exodus 12; Deut. 16
400 years of captivity in Egypt.
God sent MOSES to deliver them.
The Pharaoh resisted and
REFUSED.
God sent PLAGUES to punish Egypt-
gnats, flies, boils, hail, locusts,
darkness, etc.
The tenth plague was the PASSOVER.
Each Israelite family was to find a healthy male LAMB &
keep it separate.
On the 14th day of the month the lamb was to be KILLED and eaten.
They were to “paint” the door
posts of each home with the BLOOD of the lamb. There was no ‘plan B.’
The angel of the Lord killed the firstborn MALE of each Egyptian family, but passed over the homes where he saw the blood. The blood of the lamb provided PROTECTION.
God commanded the people to
celebrate a FEAST annually to remember. (Deut. 16)
In what way is Jesus our Lamb?
1 Peter 1:18-Jesus was our perfect
sacrificial lamb (1 Cor. 5:7) All the DETAILS point
to Christ.
“SELECTED” on Palm Sunday, the
10th of Abib.
Perfect; without SIN (John 19:6).
Killed on the 14th of Abib at 3 PM the
time of SACRIFICE of the lamb.
He offers deliverance and forgiveness to
those who BELEIVE.
Hebrews 9
JESUS is the High Priest AND
the sacrifice (v. 11).
He offered his own BLOOD for our
eternal redemption (v. 12).
He was an unblemished
sacrifice (v. 14) See Heb.4:14-16.
He was sacrificed ONCE for all time. (v. 28; 9:12-14)
(Heb. 9:22) He is God’s ONLY
means of salvation.
His blood must be sprinkled on the doorpost; Jesus’
blood saves when received by FAITH.
