LALLA HASNAA SUSTAINABLE COAST AWARDS

The Mohammed VI Foundation for Environmental Protection awards the Lalla Hasnaa Sustainable

Coast Awards to recognize outstanding initiatives or projects that contribute to coastal protection and

encourage socially and environmentally responsible behavior.

They are organized every two years.

The Lalla Hasnaa Sustainable Coast Awards are open to:

Natural persons: journalists, students, secondary school students, high school students,

citizens, etc.

Public or private legal entities (economic operators, local authorities, associations, NGOs,

primary, secondary and higher education establishments, research centers, etc.)

Partnerships involving one or more natural and legal persons.

They aim to:

Create momentum to protect the national coastline;

Enhance and publicize original projects to help the coast;

Encourage society to become involved in protecting the coast.

They are based on:

The commitment by Her Royal Highness Princess Lalla Hasnaa as Ambassador for the

Coast, awarded to Her Royal Highness in 2007 by the United Nations Environment

Programme;

The National Charter of the Environment and Sustainable Development adopted by Morocco.

Some history

From the Lalla Hasnaa Clean Beaches Awards to the Lalla Hasnaa Sustainable Coast Awards.

After study and reflection about these Clean Beach Awards, it was deemed necessary to give them a

new, more global orientation that takes into account the Foundation’s broader objectives for the

sustainable development of the coast. The designation Lalla Hasnaa Sustainable Coast Awards reflects

the Foundation’s new orientations.

A gradual evolution

The Lalla Hasnaa Award for the "Most Beautiful and Cleanest Public Beach in Morocco" was created

in 1999, at the beginning of the program.

In 2003, it evolved for the first time in anticipation of the arrival of the Foundation for Environmental

Education’s (FEE) Blue Flag label, which the Foundation has introduced in Morocco. The evaluation

criteria for the prize are thus aligned with those of the label.

Three years later, in 2006, the Lalla Hasnaa Awards evolved again. They distinguished a specific

action, a personality or a particularly committed association, instead of recognizing a beach for its

cleanliness, in conformity to the Blue Flag label. Three categories were then created: the Commitment

Award, the Initiative Award and the Innovation Award.

The Lalla Hasnaa Clean Beaches Awards have undoubtedly created a new dynamic for beach

cleanliness and development. But as the Foundation expanded its action to the coast, a new adaptation

was needed to reward not only beaches in the strict sense of the term, but also projects or actions

concerning all facets of the coast.

Five categories

The Lalla Hasnaa Sustainable Coast Awards comprise five categories:

“Clean Beaches Program” Awards Category

This award recognizes an initiative for a beach, or several beaches, in terms of management,

development, preservation, education and information. For legal entities, this category is reserved for

the Foundation's Clean Beaches program partners.

“Sharing and Living Environment” Awards Category

This award recognizes initiatives to promote public and natural spaces, urban or peri-urban that

comprise part of the Moroccan coast.

“Protection and enhancement of natural heritage" Awards Category This category rewards the most interesting achievements towards a better understanding of the coast,

and the conservation of its biodiversity and its fragile ecosystems.

It is open to universities, research centers, communes, companies, public and private entities, and

associations.

The award also recognizes threats to the security and integrity of the Moroccan coastline.

“Education and Youth” Awards Category

This category rewards the best actions, projects, studies, research or environmental education

programs, carried out by primary and secondary schools, high schools, academic institutions, research

centers, public and private organizations and the media.

“Environmental and Social Responsibility of Organizations” Awards category

This award is dedicated to the initiatives of economic operators who have chosen to integrate an

environmental, social or economic approach that have a positive impact on the Moroccan coast.

A professional and independent jury

In order to ensure the efficient management of the awards, from their launch to their award, two

governance structures have been put in place:

An independent jury composed of 25 members, including 6 women, comprised of experts, scientists,

communication officers and other sustainable development actors, whose main task is evaluating the

candidate files;

A permanent secretariat whose main mandate is to ensure the preparatory work before the awards are

launched, provide technical assistance to the candidates, and prepare the Jury's work.

2nd Edition, 2017

A modern and environmentally-friendly edition

The second edition of the Lalla Hasnaa Sustainable Coast Awards was launched on April 17, 2014

and closed on August 27th. A communication campaign was organized and an Internet platform

dedicated to the management of candidate applications was designed. Thanks to this platform, the

candidates were able to fill out and submit their application online in the language of their choice. It is

a simple, structured procedure, based on a standardized form offering an objective basis for candidate

evaluation by the jury members. Moreover, this platform was also designed to allow jury members to

access the application files via the internet and to conduct their evaluation remotely, thereby reducing

the holding of physical meetings whenever possible. By avoiding the use of paper and avoiding travel

to submit applications and jury member meetings, the Foundation has adopted an environmental

approach aligned with the values it advocates.

Significant interest

The Second Edition of the Lalla Hasnaa Sustainable Coast Awards has attracted great interest as

evidenced by the thousands of Internet platform consultations and the hundreds of accounts created by

candidates from all regions of the Kingdom.

In the end, the jury selected 109 files that were evaluated on the criteria of relevance, effectiveness,

efficiency, impact and sustainability. The breakdown of the dossiers received per category of the

Sustainable Coast Awards was as follows:

40 candidates for the "Clean Beaches Program" award;

17 candidates for the "Sharing and Living Environment" award;

5 candidates for the "Protection and enhancement of natural heritage" award;

31 candidates for the "Education and Youth" award;

16 candidates for the "Environmental and Social Responsibility of Organizations" award.

Project summary:

To resolve the problem created by the silting up of the Saïdia beach car parking lots, the Saïdia Development Corporation used various approaches.

- Palisades made of local natural materials to reduce the wind speed on the ground and immobilize the sand on the beach.

- Encouraged natural and native vegetation development by planting Atriplex and Tamaris, which are two local species that naturally vegetate the dunes. The plantations were irrigated during the first two years in order to promote their growth. These areas have been corded off and information and awareness campaigns have been carried out with the site managers and the general public to reduce the risks of trampling and degradation of these sand-fixing plants.

- The beach was planted to cover up nearby paved areas and the public was informed of the vegetation’s essential role in preserving beaches, through awareness and information panels and also through two people who conducted outreach directly on the beach.
