Lupine LaneOn May 31, 2013, Lupine Lane broke ground on their new school

and creative enrichment center in Rough Hollow. As the kids in pink and yellow construction hats watched in excitement, the golden shovels turned the first scoops of earth at 1001 Highlands Boulevard. In the small holes, the children planted the fruit trees that they have nurtured at the Lupine Lane Cottage during the 2012-2013 school year. As the kids grow older, they will return to Lupine Lane to care for the trees, then enjoy the shade and fruit the trees offer. It was a joyous, yet simple act that symbolizes how an idea the size of a seed can in fact be nurtured and grown into a wonderful, blossoming reality for the benefit and enjoyment of many.

The road to the groundbreaking was long, but meaningful. Lupine Lane was established in July 2008 and began with a class at the Lakeway Activity Center called Tasty Tuesday. The summer cooking class was a success. Lupine Lane’s founder, Lauren Boyle, rediscovered her passion for creating and educating in the first moments of that class after spending the two previous years travelling. As a child, Lauren enjoyed spending any money she earned at the teacher store and using the supplies to set up classrooms in her New Jersey basement. Teaching seemed to be the right fit for her, however, after fieldwork in education courses during college, Lauren found that teaching in the public school system seemed like a daunting maze. She felt her entrepreneurial spirit tug, and there was no turning back. After the first summer’s success, Lupine Lane began offering mommy and me classes and after school classes in Austin, Lakeway and Round Rock community centers. For 2 1/2 years, Lauren and her boyfriend, Carl Cates, packed up Lauren’s silver Jeep full of ingredients for cooking classes, odds and ends for art projects and instruments for music, and set out to set everything up, teach, inspire and create, then take it all back down. Rinse and repeat. It was not ideal, but it was a start. And, they were doing it. Themselves. One day, during an Absolutely Art class at the Lakeway Activity Center, a friend and mother of one of the children spoke with Lauren about an international school that their family was opening in Lakeway. Both she and Lauren knew that Lupine Lane could somehow be involved.

In July 2010, surrounded by mountains of boxes, Lauren and Carl met with the owners of Abercorn International School to begin the after school program. In the school’s first year, there was tremendous growth, yet there were some vacant rooms. While packing up one evening, Lauren and Carl looked around the bright, airy, large and perhaps most importantly, empty classrooms. The next afternoon, they approached the school about leasing one of the rooms. Everyone was excited; Lupine Lane would have a home and the programs would introduce curious children and parents to Abercorn. It was a match. In January 2011, Lauren and Carl created a space that they could call their own. After 2 1/2 years of using the Jeep, Lauren’s parents’ garage and extra room, just about wherever they could find, as home base, they could finally get in the car with a wallet and keys and head to work. It was freeing and grounding at the same time. They were finally able to fully manifest this philosophy they had worked diligently to create. And it went well.

So well in fact, while planning their first full-fledged summer camp in 2011, Lauren decided that she would explore opening a preschool. It seemed to be a logical progression and everything Lupine Lane had done up until that point supplied all of the necessary components.

Since Lupine Lane was still within Abercorn, the program was first titled Mother’s Day Out. Lauren and Carl secured all of the licensure, developed a curriculum and embarked on a supremely wonderful first year. Vowing not to exceed 8 children that year, they developed a healthy waiting list. With that in mind, midyear, Lauren decided to explore securing an SBA loan to build a school and creative enrichment center. After compiling all of the necessary documentation, which could rival the Encyclopedia Britannica, and meeting with the most genuine and inspiring banker in all of Texas, Lauren secured an SBA loan, which would allow her to design and build a school. At that point, it became a tremendously complex ropes course. Having never dealt with architects, civil engineers, developers, loan processors, etcetera, it seemed as though each turn was another incredible learning experience. Thankfully, most everyone Lauren encountered was eager to patiently listen, decipher information and explain which direction to proceed. It was not always accurate advice, but there were always many lessons learned, nonetheless. After retiring, Lauren plans to write a book on how to build a school, to make the road a bit easier for those in the future. Although admittedly, someone who would be likely to go forward with this may be doing so with a naïve sense of courage. And, if the great intentions are there, perhaps they should remain naïve, so as to remain enthusiastic.

In the midst of the loan and design process, Lupine Lane outgrew its initial home at Abercorn. With little to no rental space that satisfied the needs of the school available, in true Lupine Lane fashion, Lauren and Carl secured a 3000 square foot modular home, which is now known as “the Lupine Lane Cottage”. Given city restrictions, they found one of the only locations that would allow for the Cottage in the time frame needed before school began. They made it happen. The Cottage arrived on August 15, 2012 in three parts and without electricity, water or a floor covering the 3000 square feet. Contractors, teachers and family members set to work to get everything in place for orientation on August 30. In 14 days, the Cottage was set up and transformed into the most magical early childhood environment imaginable and is only more special now because of the wonderful children, teachers and families who come through its doors every day.

As Lupine Lane embarks on its next phase, we plan to do so with each previous step in the forefront of our minds and hearts. As when teaching children, it is vital to emphasize the importance of each step in a process. Whether the process is creating a sculpture, cooking pasta from scratch, a complex math equation or an imaginative backyard game, each step has value and importance. There is, at the very least, one thing that can be learned from each turn, hill or scenic view. And, it’s important to take time to fully enjoy each learning experience, so it can be shared, perhaps in a new way, to inspire and ignite passions within others.

Artwork by Corinne McClaran will be on display at the Lakeway City Hall Art Gallery through Aug. 6. The exhibit may be viewed during regular City Hall office hours from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays. The Art Gallery is off the main lobby of City Hall, 1102 Lohmans Crossing.

In Germany, under the direction of Siegfried W.A. Hahn and Howard Wexler, McClaran studied watercolor and oil in the tradition of the Old Masters. She continued in Germany with Dieter Kast at the Academy ad modum Maroger. She studied brush painting in Korea with Wal Chong Lee. McClaran continued her studies with internationally known artists Leo Smith, Christopher Shink, Skip Lawrence, Gerald Brommer, Jane Burnham and Ken Hosmer. She now paints with watercolor and wishes to continue to study, improve, enhance and simplify her art so she may better entertain the eye through the joy of natural elegance in watercolor.

McClaran was on the board of directors of the Lake Travis Arts League and co-chaired its Bluebonnet Bash and Fine Arts Tour. She is past president and past board member of the Waterloo

Watercolor Group and past president and board member of the Capitol Art Society.

HOT JAZZ IN COOL COLORADOEvergreen, Colorado, is about 1400 miles from New Orleans,

but again this July it becomes Bourbon Street with Altitude when the 12th Evergreen Jazz Festival takes over the town.

If you like Dixieland, blues, swing and boogie-woogie and long for relief from the Texas heat, this event could be the highlight of your summer. Evergreen is about one hour west of Denver International Airport (and about 2500 feet higher!)

There are no group travel arrangements, but Newcomers who have attended in the past are looking forward to another great time. Just ask Chuck and Pat Huskinson, Betty Welch and Sheryn Asher. Or talk to Jim and Nancy Reiners. They've been involved in the festival for years. The website, www.EvergreenJazz.org covers everything. Big ticket discounts are still available, but they expire June 30th, so get a move on!

Santa may need to slather on the sunscreen because it will be Christmas in July on Saturday, July 27, 2013, when AKA Vocal Show Group brings their swinging 1940s USO-style show to the Lake Travis Event Center to benefit Lake Travis Christmas Hope, a non-profit organization dedicated to helping support wounded soldiers and their families at the San Antonio Military Medical Center through the Air Warrior Courage Foundation. While grants are made primarily during the Christmas holiday season, funds are needed and the opportunity to help are year-round, which is why Lake Travis Event Center, AKA Vocal Show Group, HEB (Four Points), Artisan Bistro, Circle C Catering and Floral Renaissance have teamed with Lake Travis Christmas Hope for this very special “Christmas in July” show.

About Lake Travis Christmas Hope The average stay at San Antonio Military Medical Center (SAMMC) for a wounded soldier is a staggering 2.5 years. As they endure operations and rehabilitations and are unable to work, their families are left financially challenged. Lake Travis Christmas Hope is an all-volunteer non-profit organization of Lake Travis (Austin) area residents created to raise funds to help support wounded soldiers and their families during this time. LRMC Participates in Medical Mission Trip to Ghana

Lakeway Regional Medical Center helped equip medical professionals to Vea, Ghana, Africa & 3 other nearby villages from May 31-June 9. The medical professionals consisted of doctors, nurses and dentists all from Real Life Church. One of the professionals that attended was Angel Guzman RDCS AE, PE an employee of LRMC.

Vea is a remote village in the Bolgatanaga region of Upper East Ghana, West Africa. There is no running water, no electricity and one doctor for every 183,000 people. The trip was to provide a free clinic to treat and educate the people in the village to promote health and increase their life expectancy. Angel said, “We wanted to extend the love of Christ to those in need by means greater than just telling them. We wanted to show them that love in a way they can see and understand.”

Lakeway Regional Medical Center took part in this mission trip by loaning a portable ultrasound machine which allowed cardiac ultrasounds to be performed on patients in the village. Pediatric Cardiologist Kenneth E. Shafer, with Children’s Cardiology Associates, assisted in reading all of these exams. When David Kreye, CEO of Lakeway Regional Medical Center, was asked about this opportunity, he didn’t even give it a second thought and said, “We would absolutely love to help by providing the machine.”

The trip was a huge success to say the least and these professionals were able to bring treatment to over 2,000 people in four different villages in Northern Ghana. Real Life Church is still raising money for projects in Ghana and you can get more information by going to www.changeghana.org.

See the Que Pastas Kindie Musicians on Friday, July 12th at 4 p.m. Some say The Que Pastas are people from another planet. Others claim The Que Pastas is the brainchild of Gene Davis, a young alt-country musician

In a unanimous vote June 18, the Lake Travis Independent School District Board of Trustees approved new elementary and middle school attendance zone boundaries effective for the 2014-2015 school year.

Additionally, community input and Board guidance has resulted in the creation of a ‘grandfathering’ process that will provide a limited phase-in of new attendance zone requirements for eligible students.

In March 2013, the LTISD School Attendance Zone Advisory Committee initiated the process of developing rational and sustainable school attendance zones in preparation for the opening of Elementary School No. 6, the new Lake Travis Middle School and the expanded Hudson Bend Middle School in the fall of 2014. After weeks of analyzing and interpreting demographic data, reports, maps, and student enrollment trends and projections, the 27-member committee comprised of parents, teachers, and district residents reached consensus on one elementary map and one middle school map and presented its plan to LTISD trustees on May 21.

“While it’s important to know that this committee thoroughly vetted a number of significant factors to formulate its recommendation, we realize this decision will impact some families more than others,” said Lisa Johnson, LTISD Board Vice President. “However, I believe the board’s decision best supports the greater good of the LT community. ‘Grandfathering’ is a viable option that should help reduce disruptions for our affected families during this time of change.”

“The purpose of ‘grandfathering’ is to provide a limited phase-in of new attendance zone requirements,” said Dr. Chris Allen, LTISD Deputy Superintendent, who facilitated the committee process. “It is a process by which a student who meets specific criteria may be exempt from changing the school he or she currently attends because of an attendance zone change”.

According to District guidelines, an elementary student who would be a 5th grader in the fall of 2014 is eligible to be ‘grandfathered.’ In addition, the younger sibling(s) may also elect to attend the same elementary school while the older brother/sister completes 5th grade

during the 2014-15 school year. After the 2014-2015 school year, the younger sibling(s) must attend the elementary school in the attendance zone in which he/she resides.

Similarly, a middle school student who would be a 7th or 8th grader in the fall of 2014 is eligible to be ‘grandfathered’ for the remainder of his/her middle school years. In addition, a younger sibling in 5th or 6th grade for the same year may elect to accompany his/her middle school brother or sister to the middle school as long as the older sibling is in attendance at the middle school.

‘Grandfathered’ students at both the elementary and middle school levels will not be provided with school transportation. District officials will begin the distribution of associated forms for the ‘grandfathering’ of eligible students during the 2013-2014 school year.

“On behalf of my colleagues, I thank the members of the committee, as well as our administration and demographer, for their hard work and dedication to this important process,” concluded Mrs. Johnson.

Every two years, the District’s demographer, Population And Survey Analysts—or PASA, studies student residential locations, potential growth and decline, housing trends, and economic factors inherent to the District. The findings are contained in a demographic update presented to District officials to assist with the planning of future facilities and the adjustment of school attendance zone boundaries to accommodate growth in student enrollment. Demographers indicate enrollment is increasing by approximately 400 students—roughly 5 percent—annually. Over the past five years, student enrollment has increased by 33%. Considering a high growth rate scenario, PASA estimates student enrollment would reach approximately 15,000 by 2025, nearly double the current enrollment.

New attendance zone boundaries for the 2014-2015 school year, including general and detailed maps, may be accessed on the LTISD website under the ‘Attendance Zones’ tab at www.ltisdschools.org.

Leadership Lake Travis sponsored by the Lake Travis Chamber of Commerce provides a hands-on, interactive experience where leaders and emerging leaders will have the opportunity to enhance their personal and professional skills, gain a deeper understanding of community dynamics, and build a network of colleagues and associates throughout the south Lake Travis area. Throughout the year, participants will travel to various sites, meeting the policy makers and trend setters in our community. They will interact with elected officials, city executives, business leaders, non-profit organization leaders and others who make our community work. Sessions have been designed to provide a solid foundation in the concepts and principles of leadership that will be addressed throughout the program as the participants are confronted with the daily issues that face our community. It is hoped that graduates will use the insights and contacts they develop through this program to enhance performance in their current jobs and endeavors and enrich the community by involvement with local civic, government, business, religious and/or non-profit groups.

I “thank” the chamber for finding a way to give us serious leadership lessons in a memorable way that we can apply immediately. The program has solid substance and can transform leaders in the Lake Travis area” says Karen Reich, LTHS Assistant Principal.

“Each month, I was fortunate enough to connect with local business leaders, elected officials and administrators to learn how they interact with the community and confront issues that affect the people they serve and do business with. The knowledge that each of us gained about the community, its history and its’ leaders was invaluable” says Phyllis Campos, Community Impact Newspaper.

The commitment to the Leadership program is one day per month from September through May. During the course of the program, participants experience an inside look at their community from various points of view such as local government, law enforcement, retail and economic development, real estate, tourism, education, non-profit and medical services day. The Chamber is now accepting applications for Leadership Lake Travis Class 005. There are only 35 slots available for the class and interested applicants are encouraged to apply right away. The class selection will be made in August and the new group will be introduced at a reception later that month.
