et’s all think “green” hard and long together, be-cause I know, by the end of the month, we’re going

to see some! And I’m not talking about

shamrocks or leprechauns, although March does bring one of my favorite holidays celebrating everything Irish, from potatoes and a little libation here and there to horses and the land and lore, even a little jig and a song, these are all things that most of the Irish love.

I ought to know. I’ve always been convinced that my heritage is from the Emerald Isle.

So to all my Irish friends out there, enjoy your day and invite all your non-Irish friends to partake!

And for all of us, let’s look forward to the fresh foliage that will emerge and the azaleas and dogwoods that usher in spring and raise all our spirits.

The lakeside landscape will take on the palette of spring, and we’ll once again be out there taking it all in and being reminded of this very special time of year.

We’re very happy to present a preview of artist John Lonergan’s long awaited collection of his works in his new book, “John Lonergan The Painter.”

I oohed and ahhed my way from cover to cover and I know you will, too.

We also make a visit to a place where the fare is hearty and fresh and well, filling to say the least.

You’ll meet restraunteur Roderick Beavers and get a peek at the place he calls “Big Deddy’s” just a little bit north of Pell City on Old Coal City Road.

Then, just in time for the upcoming summer season, we’ll find out about all those new fangled things you can outfit your boat with or find on a brand new model.

You’ll see the lovely lakeside home of Dennis and Debbie Gilliam and find out how they found their very own oasis on Logan Martin Lake. I always say, “every home has a story,” and be it a real whopper of a place or a cozy cottage, there’s a story there to go with it.

Oh, I almost forgot! My kitchen adventures focus on salads this month, I think we all might be ready for a little lighter fare about now.

My favorite? A shrimp and avocado recipe I “stole” from one of the establishments I worked for while in college. To die for, really, and it doesn’t only taste good, it’s a gorgeous dish that you’ll love for any occasion.

In this issue, too, you’ll learn about the advantages of kayak fishing and about how Alabama Power Company manages the lake you love.

So let’s just go ahead and declare it “spring!”And may the “luck o’ the Irish” be with you!

e cast the lure out from his kayak, and it didn’t take long for a large spotted bass to pick up the jig and give a tug.

Joey Brown, 33, of Lincoln was reeling in plenty of fish on that cold winter February day, and the next day was just as productive for the angler who fishes for large mouth, spotted and striped bass, along with crappie.

“I caught 32 bass in a four-hour period, two hours one day and two hours the next day,” he said. “Right now, they are feeding like crazy.”

Joey was reeling in fish after fish in a spot that’s only accessible by kayak.

He explained it was the pre-spawn period, and fish were filling

their bellies in preparation for that.Joey was catching all these fish from the comforts of his

kayak.“You can get into spots that you can’t with a big bass boat,”

Joey said. “People think I’m crazy, but I really enjoy fishing from a kayak.”

Joey, who has fished all his life, said there are advantages with fishing from a kayak, and the boater also gets some exercise with every fishing adventure.

“It’s a lot more challenging,” he said. Joey, who is starting a kayak guide service, said he fishes in

many areas of Logan Martin Lake, but concentrates his efforts north of the I-20 bridge, which spans across the Coosa River.

He said it is peaceful fishing from a kayak and easier to quietly move into areas where big bass lurk.

“You don’t spook the fish, because you aren’t using a trolling motor,” he said.

Joey said there are times he is so quiet, he has paddled up on wild game, like deer and turkey, along the shores of the lake.

“It’s really peaceful,” he said. Joey kayak fishes year-round, three or four times every week. His recreational kayak is equipped with a depth finder, rod

holder with seven fishing reels and rods, plenty of artificial bait for day-long outings and an anchor system, if he wants to stay in one spot and fish.

Joey normally casts his bait out from the sitting position.“It takes a little practice,” he said. When fishing from his kayak he stays close to shore, about 20-

25 feet from the bank for safety reasons. He equips his kayak with a bright orange flag and strobe light.

His paddle blades are brightly colored so he is more visible on

the lake. Kayak fishing is catching on so much that kayak manufacturers

are designing more and more kayaks specifically for fishing. Also kayak fishing tournaments are surfacing across the country, including right here on Logan Martin Lake.

Frank Chitwood with the Coosa Riverkeeper announced that their non-profit organization is hosting a canoe and kayak fishing tournament series, called the Coosa Canoe & Kayak Fishing 2013 Tournament Series.

Proceeds from the event go to the Coosa Riverkeeper, which is a 501(c) (3) grassroots non-profit whose mission is to protect and restore the Coosa River in Alabama. The organization focuses on citizen-based Clean Water Act enforcement.

Chitwood said he also fishes from a kayak.“I’m into it,” he said, adding that he will not participate in any

of the kayak and canoe fishing tournaments slated to start this month, and will also be held in June and October.

But don’t count Joey out.

Joey Brown of Lincoln prefers fishing from a kayak. He has caught many a large fish in areas where access is impossible from a large boat. Here, he

shows a big spotted bass he caught.

“I didn’t fish in it last year, but I might fish in it this year,” he said.

The first tournament is set for March 30 on Neely Henry Lake, while the second tournament is scheduled for June 1 on Logan Martin Lake. The final “black bass” tournament is a two-day event, Oct. 26-27, along the stretch of water below Jordan Dam, near the Coosa Outdoor Center in Wetumpka.

Chitwood explains this tournament is different. Instead of anglers bringing their fish back to the weigh-in, they

will bring digital images of their catch. Pictures are taken with their bass positioned against a ruler, so judges can compare the size of fish competitors catch during the tournament.

“The tournament’s unique format greatly reduces fish mortality over the traditional bass tournaments,” Chitwood said.

The fish are released in the same spot where they are caught, shortly after being netted by the angler.

Chitwood said the popularity of kayak fishing is growing. “It started out as a coastal thing,” he said. “More and more

people are kayak fishing on inland lakes. It’s exploding.”Anglers can only use artificial baits. There are six awards

presented at each tournament, the top three anglers with the three largest catches, a big fish award, the best young angler and the best female award.

The top angler from the combination of all three tournaments will receive the BlackJack Lands Angler of the Year prize, which is a Primo Oval Junior ceramic grill this year.

Chitwood said the entry fees are $50 for the first two tournaments and $80 for the final two-day tournament of the year.

All tournaments include a free sack breakfast and lunch, a free camp site, goodie bags, an event t-shirt and a one-year membership to Coosa Riverkeeper.

For more information about the 2013 Coosa Canoe & Kayak Fishing Tournament Series or to register for a tournament go to www.CoosaKayakFishing.com.

As for me, I might give the kayak fishing a try. I used to paddle my two-seat recreational kayak and let my

youngest son, Kenneth, fish from the front of the boat. I enjoyed the paddling part, and he enjoyed the catching the fish part and he always caught a bunch of fish.

So who knows, I might just sign up for the kayak fishing tournament myself.

I have a kayak, fishing equipment and a digital camera, now all I have to do is catch a few fish, no problem right?

We’ll see, but until then have a safe and wonderful time on the lake.

Fishing from kayaks is becoming a more popular outdoor sport adventure for experienced anglers. My son, Jonathan, tries his luck at catching a bass on Logan Martin Lake from my recreational kayak.

K, let’s start with the name. That’s not a typo. The place really is called Big Deddy’s Wings and

BBQ.According to owner Roderick Beavers, his mother started

calling him Big Daddy when he was a child “because I was really skinny until I was almost out of high school. I was a bean pole for most of my life. But even after I gained some weight, the name stuck. My nieces and nephews couldn’t say ‘Big Daddy,’ they called me ‘Big Deddy.’ It’s a nice way to use a southern accent in the name.”

Beavers is a native and lifelong resident of Pell City, who operated a restaurant in Riverside from 2003 to 2004. He had an opportunity “to try again” in Pell City about three years ago, and has been going strong ever since.

And, you can eat at Big Deddy’s for a long, long time without ever having the same meal twice.

“I’ve got 21 different wing flavors on the menu, and that many specialty fries flavors, too,” he said. “And I’m told I’ve got the best burgers in the city. They’re all hand-patted chopped sirloin, 93 percent lean. And that’s not me saying they’re the best in town, that’s my customers talking. That’s what they tell me.

And they also tell me I’ve got the best barbecue.”Beavers designed his own barbecue grill and had it custom

made for this restaurant, he said. Ribs, chicken and Boston butts are among the most popular barbecue items.

“We also do a good bit of catering,” he said. “And all our desserts are homemade, all our cakes and pies. You probably won’t see the same dessert twice in the same week.”

Other customer favorites include the barbecue salad, chicken strip salad, chicken salad and “lots and lots of other good stuff.

It’s a very broad menu. We have fish dinners and patty melts, and just about everything sells. I redid the menu not too long ago, and took all the non-sellers off. Everything that’s still in there is selling.”

“Oh, and we do Kool-Aid,” he added. “There’s only one other place in town that does that, and people tell me they like mine better.”

He’s still getting raves from his customers. “I had an old customer that came up to me the other day,

Oh, the red velvet cake!

hen we think “salad,” it’s often a mix of fresh greens and veggies and things like that. That’s all well and good, and there are times that’s the kind of salad that works.

But then there are times you may want to elaborate and whip up some salads that exceed the usual expectations.

That’s what I’ve done this month, I have a Shrimp and Avocado Salad you’ll come to depend on and a Wild Rice Salad you may

never even have heard of.How about a Spicy Sweet Potato Salad that offers up all kinds

of good things and from our longtime Lakeside friend, Myrt Pfannkuche, to whom I issued an appeal because of her well known culinary talents, a Very Berry Salad.

For those of you who don’t know, Myrt’s a time and time again winner in our annual Holiday Cookbook Contest and, well, let’s just say she knows her way around the kitchen.

So, here we go, with some great ideas I think you will add to your “tried and true” favorites!

Shrimp and Avocado SaladWhat you need:One cup cooked salad shrimp

Two tablespoons fresh chives

One-third cup mayonnaise

One tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

Two tablespoons chili sauce

Salt to taste

Fresh ground black pepper to taste.

Two avocados, halved length-wise and pitted

One tablespoon fresh lemon juice

Bibb lettuce leaves

Paprika, to taste, about a teaspoon

Sliced pimento peppers, for garnish, along with lemon wedges

and fresh parsley sprigs

I have added finely chopped red onion and it totally works! About two tablespoons for the brave of heart!

What you do:In a bowl, mix the chopped shrimp, chives, mayonnaise,

Worcestershire, chili sauce, onions if desired, salt and lemon juice. Mound the shrimp mixture onto avocado halves and sprinkle with lemon juice. Place on lettuce leaves and sprinkle

with paprika and pepper. Garnish with pimento and lemon wedges. This serves well

with assorted crackers or toasted breads and cheeses to make a complete meal.

Wild Rice SaladWhat you need:One six ounce package wild rice

¾ cup light mayonnaise

One teaspoon white vinegar

One teaspoon white sugar

Salt and pepper to taste

Two cups smoked, cubed turkey

¼ cup diced green onion

One cup seedless red grapes

Six ounces blanched slivered almonds

What you do:Cook rice according to package directions. Remove from heat

and set aside to cool.In a medium bowl, whisk together mayonnaise, vinegar, sugar,

salt and pepper. Stir in rice, turkey, onion and grapes until evenly coated with dressing. Cover and refrigerate for one to two hours prior to serving. Before serving, sprinkle slivered almonds over the top of the salad and serve over mixed greens of your choice. Great with hot toasted garlic cheddar cheese bread! (I highly recommend McCormick’s California style garlic powder!)

This zesty shrimp and avocado salad is a sure bet for any occasion.

Art by the Water

ooking at a painting from John Lonergan will change your view of what you thought a few brush strokes on canvas could be.

And looking through the collection of his work in his recently released book, “John Lonergan Painter,” you realize the variety of subjects he has mastered and the enormity of work he has done.

When he is not busy teaching art and spending time with his photographer wife, Sandra, their black Labrador Retriever, Doe,

and their several rescue Sheltie dogs, he is searching for beauty in the “ordinary” that surrounds us.

For this Pell City native, growing up in the Southern countryside has had a direct influence on his work, especially when it comes to painting landscapes.

Lonergan’s aunt was one of his first collectors, and bought his drawings for a nickel before he was even in the first grade.

He sold his first painting of a snow scene landscape to his English teacher for $10 when he was a senior in high school.

Although his family was very supportive of his talent early on, Lonergan said that it was his high school art teacher, Dorothy Mays, who was his inspiration to pursue art full time.

“She was very encouraging and always very complimentary,” Lonergan said. “I told her I wanted to be an artist and she told me ‘you already are an artist.’”

Lonergan would often paint with the Grumbacher oil paints that his father used to mix special colors for signs he made.

His father, John Lonergan, Sr., worked at a cotton mill, and was also a welder, and a sign painter. He could also draw very well.

“My dad did all kinds of work to support the family,” Lonergan said. “My parents encouraged me to draw.”

After high school, Lonergan earned his bachelor’s degree in fine arts in 1964 from the University of Alabama during the abstract expressionist era that took hold of the 1960s.

In 1968, he exhibited at Littlehouse Galleries in Homewood

The painting Lonergan titled “Purple Morning.”

and soon after began the Lonergan Atelier. He then went on to earn his master’s degree in education

administration from the University of Alabama in 1974. After a brief career in graphic commercial art, Lonergan

began a 25-year-long career teaching art at Pell City High School.

It was there that he dabbled in pottery, but also began to find his groove in oil painting.

“It just seemed to happen to me,” Lonergan said. “I’ve worked hard all my life. There were times when my work was rejected. There were times when I saw others succeed and I didn’t.”

Lonergan’s hard work and perseverance has certainly paid off over the years, and has put Lonergan in a class all of his own.

He has gone on to win numerous awards, including most recently the grand prize at the 2012 Energen Art Show with his painting “Purple Morning.”

hen they married three years ago, Debbie and Dennis Gilliam knew they would need just the right place to call home for their blended brood.

At the time, Debbie and her two children, Olivia Cobb, 19; and Eli Cobb, 15; lived in Childersburg.

Dennis and his three children, Reid, 14; Anna-Grace, 10; and Lacy, 9; lived in Talladega.

They each owned a house in their respective cities, but

Dennis said he and Debbie wanted a compromise between the two locations.

“We knew this location at the lake would be ideal because we’re so spread out,” he said. “We have family in Childersburg and Talladega, and our kids were going to school at two different places at the time, so we thought this would be the perfect middle ground. Everybody’s family could visit here, and we could visit family without going

Dennis and Debbie Gilliam had a very happy building experience.

too far away.”But finding a lake home, especially one to fit their budget

and their large family, seemed more and more unlikely after almost two years of searching. It was while they were looking at a house in early 2011, though, that everything began to fall into place.

“My wife and I really liked the house, but it was just too small for five kids,” Dennis said. “The owner was actually across the street, and he walked over, and it turns out he was the one who built that house. We told him we loved this one, but it was just too small and he said, ‘I’ll build you a house.’”

The owner of that home was Bob Garrison, a retired engineer who now does home construction. The Gilliams started looking for the right house plan, and when they found it at a house in Chelsea, Dennis gave Garrison a call.

“We called him, and he had built the exact same house,”

Dennis said. Then, the night before they were going to make an offer

on a lot, even though it wasn’t really what they were looking for, Debbie remembered a friend who had a lakefront lot for sale. She gave her a call, and her friend was happy to get the lot off of her hands and gave them a great price.

Soon, the work began on their four-bedroom, three and a half bathroom house. Dennis and Debbie split duties – he did functionality, she did aesthetics – and with the help of their opinionated builder, who freely told them when something wasn’t going to look good and guided them in another direction, the house was mostly finished in time for the family to move in by New Year’s Day of last year.

With finishing details like wide crown molding throughout (even in the master walk-in closet) and rounded wall corners in areas where people tend to cut corners, the Gilliams said they and their children could not be more

pleased with their custom-built Logan Martin abode.

“It all happened in God’s timing, and when it worked out, it just worked out,” Debbie said. “We had heard stories about how difficult building a house can be on your marriage and your family, but it wasn’t like that for us. We had a wonderful experience, and I am really happy with the way everything turned

out.”From the pier to the soon-to-be kids’

hangout in the basement, the house is a perfect fit for the family and their gang of growing kids.

To start, the living room is outfitted with new furniture they bought upon moving in (the rest of their furnishings in the house were repurposed or are the result of a craft project by Olivia

and Debbie), as well as 13-foot-tall ceilings, a fireplace with a flat screen TV above it and a door to the back porch. The adjoining dining room features a coffered ceiling with a charming chandelier hanging over the table by the front window.

The kitchen joins these two rooms, and by design, acts as a gathering point for the family.

“We decided the house we have has to be a place where we can sit and talk and cook and enjoy each others company while looking at the lake,” Dennis said. “So this is just the perfect setup for us. We can cook, and we have enough seating for all the children to come in and out.”

The space has stainless steel appliances and dark granite countertops with speckles of brown, white and black, complemented by custom cabinets from Alabama Cabinet Company and a tiled backsplash. A large walk-in pantry, breakfast table and floor-length windows that let in lots of light complete the room. Hardwood floors throughout the house are a white oak with a honey maple stain.

On one side of the central living area are two bedrooms for the kids with a bathroom in-between, and on the other side of the house is the master suite.

The bedroom features a rice poster bed that leads the eye upward to the tray ceiling. It also connects to Dennis and Debbie’s favorite part of the house – a screened-in porch. With a mounted TV and plenty of seating, the avid Alabama fans said the porch is the best place in the house to settle down for a day of

Special attention to details such as the coffered ceiling and floor to ceiling

windows enrich the Gilliams’ dining room.

watching football.“We’ve got the TV, and we can watch it and hang out

outside. It’s screened in and floored, so if it’s a hot day, you’ve got the fan, and we just love this area,” Dennis said.

Back in the master bathroom, the couple shares a large walk-in closet with separate vanities on each side of the door. The bathtub and shower are custom poured granite mixed specifically to match the warm tan colors in the home.

In the basement, still a work in progress, there is currently one finished bedroom for Olivia, who is heading to the University of Alabama this fall. The resident “crafty person,” Olivia, made her own headboard using shutters that she painted and distressed. Debbie said they enjoy finding ways to create something that looks good and also saves money.

“We get on Pinterest and get all these ideas,” she said.

“When we built the home, we didn’t have a lot of money to spend on furniture, so some of it was simply spray-painted, and it turned out fabulous. Some things we painted and distressed with sand paper. Right now, we’re trying to make our own chalk paint. We’re always on the lookout for something cheap that we could make useful.”

The Gilliams, who both work at Alabama School for the Deaf, soon plan to start finishing the basement, which includes a two-car garage, to make two more bedrooms, a great room for the children to enjoy and possibly a yoga studio (Debbie is a certified instructor and teaches yoga at Citizens Hospital in Talladega).

“When we’re done, the kids will be able to use the downstairs as a recreation area and to have their private time,” Dennis said. “We know we’ll still see them sometimes, because kids eat a lot, and there’s not going to be a kitchen downstairs.”

Outside, which is the most important part for most

The living room is open to the kitchen area to create great family space.

lake-dwellers, the family logs endless hours in the summer months with their ski boat, fishing boat and two personal watercraft.

This year, they plan to add onto the 80-foot pier Dennis built last summer and maybe even make a beach area nearby. Dennis said their slough provides the right amount of seclusion and access, and they are looking forward to a more relaxing summer now that most of the work on the house is done.

“The water comes right up to our yard, and we love the quietness of the slough,” he said. “You have people that come up towards us a little bit, but they don’t come all the way, so we have some privacy. We see all kinds of wildlife. When you have kids, it can be challenging to keep them entertained, but when you have kids in the water, they can just go play.”

Debbie called it their “dream home” and said there is a lot they would still like to do at the house, but they have

plenty of time to get it done since the intend to retire there.

“The reason we built this house is that we knew when we retired, which hopefully won’t be too awful long, that this would be the place we would spend the rest of our years,” Dennis said. “When the children leave, this will be exactly where we need to be, because it’s a perfect house and home for all of our kids, but also the perfect place for us to spend the rest of our lives together. We’re just ahead of the curve.”

Dennis said the house, as well as their relationships with their children and his relationship with Debbie, is a reminder of the family’s many blessings.

“I believe that, just like our relationship, this was all part of the grand plan,” he said. “There’s a lot more to our story. A lot of difficult, heart-wrenching times, but when we finally just gave it to God and let him take over, life just got better.”

The screened porch located off the master bedroom makes a great place for relaxing.

a portrait or a still,” Lonergan said. “It’s all about getting the dramatic effect from light and shadow.”

As shown in his book, the distinctive Lonergan palette of colors consists of transparent oxide red, transparent oxide brown, raw umber, raw sienna, yellow ochre, cadmium yellow light, cadmium red, alizarin crimson, sap green, ultramarine blue, titanium white, and flake white.

His “Lonergan Painter’s Code” consists of 14 vital tips and techniques:1. Care for your brushes. Clean them thoroughly.2. Put generous amounts of paint on your palette. 3. Own your palette. Arrange your paints in the same location each time.4. If your white paint is stiff, soften it with medium. 5. Avoid absorbent canvas. Use only well prepared canvas or board.6. Paint with your arm and hand, not just your fingers.7. Squint to locate and simplify values.8. Identify, and then begin painting the abstract patterns within the subject.

9. Work thin to thick, dark to light, large to small. 10. Avoid sharp edges. Keep them scarce. 11. Don’t over-blend the paint.12. Use a large brush to achieve loose, painterly effects.13. Paint from life whenever possible. 14. If using photographs, use your own.

Lonergan has traveled all over Europe for inspiration for his paintings, at one point traveling as much as once a year.

But whether it be at home or abroad, Lonergan has a way of illuminating the ordinary, whether it be a ballerina getting ready for a performance, or two women chatting at a café.

In fact, the very nature that surrounds his home in Chula Vista where his black Lab Doe and Sheltie dogs enjoy frolicking on the family’s orchard farm provides inspiration.

The aforementioned “Purple Morning” piece that won the 2012 Energen Art Show’s grand prize award was inspired by a scene with a creek streaming by that caught Lonergan’s eye.

It was located on private land owned by former Sen. Jim Preuitt in Talladega County.

After getting permission from the Preuitt family to take photos of the scene, Lonergan returned to the property at different times in the day to snap a few photos to use as references.

“I got early morning references and some later in the day,”

Lonergan from page 28

Page 38: Lakeside Living - March 2013

Lonergan said. “In the early morning the shadow is long and the light is a

cooler, more bluish-yellow color, and in the late afternoon the shadow is long but the colors are warm and golden.”

He said that taking photographs for what he calls “references” has become beneficial to his artistic process.

“I will usually paint from my photography,” Lonergan said. “I pretty much copy the photograph with my painting, but when I go to take the photograph I already know what I want to paint.”

Lonergan has been a citizen of the art world for decades, and said that times have changed just as art sales have fluctuated, especially with the economic downturn in recent years.

“The art market has fallen out,” Lonergan said.

“There was a period from about 1986 where it got better and better and better until about five years ago. It’s the same thing with real estate. It all stopped at the same time.”

Lonergan currently teaches in connection with Alabama Art Supply, an art supply store in Birmingham.

“It’s going pretty well,” Lonergan said. “Every year some people seem to rededicate themselves to painting.”

In addition to teaching his students about proper technique and his “Lonergan Painter’s Code,” he has advice for new artists just starting out.

“Be true to what you believe in, to what you want to do because it has gotten me through, it really has. Stay dedicated to what you want to do,” Lonergan said.

“Art has all kinds of meanings for different people whether

About the Lake

labama Power Company is trying to get a new winter pool elevation approved for Logan Martin Lake.

“Through the Alabama Power Cooperative Approach (APCA) relicensing process, it was determined that a

change in the winter pool rule curve elevation would produce a net benefit to the development,” said Alan Peeples, reservoir management supervisor for Alabama Power Company. “This was a primary concern expressed by many stakeholders along the lake, including the Logan Martin Lake Protection Association.”

Peeples said the Logan Martin development is a multi-purpose storage reservoir with a seasonally changing water level. It is operated for hydroelectric generation, flood control, navigation flow augmentation, maintenance of downstream water quality, municipal and industrial water supply, recreational opportunities, and serves as a habitat for fish and wildlife. It provides flood control by storing water during periods of high flow and supplementing low flows during dry periods.

“APC normally operates Logan Martin Lake to target the elevations for the rule curve for the project,” he said. “Normally the reservoir level will be maintained at or below this curve.”

Peeples said from May 8 through the end of September, the lake is operated from the full pool elevation of 465 feet during normal inflows and system generating requirements. The rule curve decreases on Oct. 1, dropping three feet by the end of the month to an elevation of 462 feet. Beginning Nov. 1, the rule curve is lowered to an elevation of 460 by Dec. 31, where it stays until March 30. On April 1, the curve begins steadily rising five feet reaching the normal full pool elevation of 465 feet on May 7.

“The proposed normal drawdown of the lake is three feet,

between elevations 465 feet and 462 feet, instead of the existing five feet drawdown,” he said. “During periods of low stream flow, releases from storage below 462 feet will augment the flow of the river downstream.”

Peeples said the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) and APC worked closely during the APCA relicensing process to help ensure the proposed winter pool change, along with the improvements to the flood control operations, would be considered during the relicensing process.

“However, subsequent to filing the license application and in the absence of a new Coosa license from FERC (Federal Energy Regulatory Commission), the USACE began revisions to their ACT Basin-wide Master Reservoir Regulation Manual, of which Logan Martin is a part, and made the decision to delay review and approval of any changes to winter pool elevations at Logan Martin, and the associated flood control operations changes, until the revised CT Basin Master Reservoir Regulation Manual had gone through their entire review and approve process, which is currently ongoing,” he said. “According to the USACE, subsequent to the Manual approval and issuance, the review and approval of any changes to winter pool elevations at Logan Martin can resume.”

Peeples said currently, an increase in the Logan Martin inflows at the end of December and January helped put the lake elevations in good position as the summer filling season approaches. In January, the Coosa basin rainfall exceeded the monthly historical average by some two inches.

“Because of rainfall patterns so far this year and the expectation that they will continue, APC expects to fill Logan Martin to the summer pool elevation on schedule,” he said. “At this time of year, APC is unable to forecast elevations for the upcoming fall season, but will work within the prevailing hydrologic conditions at that time to maintain the elevation consistent with the rule curve.”

available for today’s pontoon boats, including GPS devices, mp3 hookups and customizable interior components.

“It’s not your ‘mom and pop’ pontoon boat anymore,” said Nick Standridge, salesman and mechanic at Woods Surfside Marina in Cropwell.

Concerning the GPS systems that are featured on today’s pontoon boats, Standridge says that, in addition to the geographical positioning system, that the devices also feature a thermometer and a fish finder.

“It has just about everything you need in one,” he said. While GPS systems are standard on many of today’s boats,

Standridge says that five or six years ago, the devices had to be added to the boats.

“We had to put them on,” he said.Eddie Rush, sales manager at Poor House Branch Marina,

talks about the increased popularity of the GPS devices among boaters.

“It’s become more popular over the past few years,” he said. “They can put you right in the main channel.”

The stereos on pontoon boats are also much nicer than they once were.

Alan Battle, owner of Riverside Marina, sells a stereo with

an AM/FM receiver that is also compatible with Sirius satellite radio subscriptions, has hookups for the iPod and iPhone and also features a weather band radio.

“Used to be, you’d hope you could pick up a radio station (while on the lake),” he said.

He says some of the newer stereos also feature Bluetooth capabilities.

“People are using their iPods instead of just getting radio now,” said Battle. “They just plug it into their boat. Then, when they get out of their boat, they plug it into their car.”

Concerning the prices of the stereos Battle can order, he says he can get them “under $100,” for those looking for an inexpensive stereo. He can also order top notch stereo systems where “the sky’s the limit,” in terms of the price tag.

Another change Rush noted is that the engines on pontoon boats today are “much quieter” than they used to be, and that not as many speakers are needed on the boat as in the past.

“It’s not like it used to be with the two stroke motor, you had to blare the radio just to hear it over the motor,” he said. “Now, you can just turn it (the radio) up to regular volume.”

Standridge says that some of the boats he sells are equipped with a Sony head radio. The head radio is a remote device that is mounted on the console, but is attached to the stereo itself, which is mounted under the dash in a storage compartment.

“It (the stereo) is out of the way,” he said. “Nobody’s going to break it.”

In addition to the availability of GPS and mp3 hookups on new pontoon boats, the boats’ manufacturers also allow the customer to pick and choose what they want in a new boat.

50 Lakeside Living & Logan Martin Homes - March 2013

“There are many different things you can do with the interior of a boat now – different consoles you can add to it, you have different seating arrangements, different everything,” Standridge said.

He said that instead of settling for what the pontoon boat manufacturers were offering in the past, that customers can now “get what they want” on a boat.

“Nobody wants to go without something they want,” he said.About the customization options, Rush says, “You have a

much broader variety of what you can get now.”“They make them all kinds of different ways,” he said. “You can

get so many different layouts it’s unbelievable.”Rush says that several years ago, that type of customization

didn’t exist.Standridge says the “club seating” option on the interior of new

pontoon boats allows passengers the space they need to stretch out and relax. He said some of the panels can be removed from the club seating, and a table can be added. He also talks about some of the other interior features available on today’s boats, including oversized captain’s chairs, queen’s seats and rear-facing lounges.

He said the boats he sells can be customized with an LED Bimini top. An LED light, which produces a bright light that shines in the middle of the boat’s interior, is located in the top of the retractable shade.

“It’s great to sit out there under the lights,” said Standridge. When customizing a boat, Standridge said that customers can

even choose the color of the light. Some people choose green lights in hopes that they will attract

fish at night, he said.

Standridge said the option of customizing the boat’s LED lights is a “step up” from what the available choices for a pontoon boat were in the past.

One of the biggest changes to the layout of pontoon boats in recent years, according to Standridge, is the relocation of the boat’s changing room.

The changing room was once located on the rear of the boat. The room has now been moved to the side of the boat, where it folds in and out of one of the seats. The changing room is now more compact.

“It doesn’t take up much space,” he said.Standridge says improvements have also been made to the

seating on today’s pontoons, including the addition of pillow seats.

“They’re real soft,” he said.In addition to the softer seats, the seats on many new boats

have folding armrests with cup holders. Standridge says that many of the newer cup holders can be moved to different locations inside the boat, and some of them contain LED lights that help illuminate the holders at night.

“And you still have storage under every single seat,” he said.Rush, a longtime salesman of pontoon boats, says that he is

amazed at all the things that can be done to pontoons these days, including slides with running water.

“They are so much more multi-purpose than they once were,” he said.

And while pontoon boats were once thought to only be for older boaters, Rush says that is no longer the case.

“It’s no longer, ‘I’ve got to be this age before I own a pontoon boat,’ ” he said.

Seating is plush and comfortable on today’s pontoon boats. Refrigerators are standard issue for most modern boats.

cott Fields said he has been a realtor since 2007, but was exposed to the profession as a child by watching and listening to his parents who were in the profession.Fields adds to his exposure of his parents’ experience in

listing and selling transactions, subdivision development, prop-erty management, and investor outreach, marketing techniques he has acquired in the profession.

Fields said his goal is to bring out any hidden potential of listing through staging, creative marketing thus enhancing what he describes as “curb appeal.”

Spending time with comparative market analysis, market correction ratios, conformity to the area, and scheduling home and septic inspections, Fields said adding this all together provides the purchasers all the information they need to make an informed decision.

“On the flip side,” Fields said. “I safeguard my clients who are purchasing a home by using different sources to ensure they are getting the best value for their money.”

As a transaction broker, Fields is able to represent both sides and as a mediator he doesn’t assist one party over another to obtain an edge.

“I enjoy walking a purchaser through the different steps to first time home ownership,” Fields said. “I love the challenge of listing a home, determining its value, marketing it through different mediums, and yielding its true worth through the art of negotiations.”

Fields said he is well versed in dealing with both the listing and selling of foreclosed properties. His experience working with FreddieMac, FannieMae, HUD and bank owned properties provides him with “a direct sense of the pulse of the market.”

“I am in continuous contact with asset managers, loan officers, surveyors, home inspectors, contractors and the other professions integrated in the real estate market,” Fields said.

Fields shared that in all facets of his life he has been involved

in the community in both a paid position or as a volunteer.“I enjoy the challenge of assisting a client whether it be

listing their home or purchasing one,” Fields said.Fields enjoys the daily interaction with a diverse society

that “enables one to grown on so many levels,” he said. “I am blessed to have this interaction on a daily basis.

“Bottom line is that I love the challenge and the satisfaction it yields when I can assist another to see their dream fulfilled,” he said.

The 46-year-old is the oldest of three children and has lived in Pell City and St. Clair County for 41 years and said he has witnessed and experienced positive expansion.

Fields attended Pell City, High School, Jacksonville State University, Jefferson State and Bishop State Community Colleges. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard for five years and worked in a Search & Rescue and an Environmental Protection Administration Unit.

Fields is also a Critical Care Registered Nurse specializing in Trauma & Cardiopulmonary System, has worked for NASCAR in a marketing capacity and has traveled all of the lower 48 states in association with his prior positions.

“I am an avid outdoorsman, connoisseur of different arts, voracious reader of non-fiction, biographies, science, and religious studies,” Fields said. “I enjoy different forms of music as this is another form of communication and expression.”

Fields describes himself as “a people person,” and points out his professional activities and hobbies are linked to social interaction. He said he enjoys listening to others’ points of view, respects their values, and watching a person reach their full potential. Fields is a director on the St. Clair County Board of Realtors and works with FieldsGossett Realty, Inc.
