An Evening Of Laughter And Tears“Why is it that the minute a

hairdresser puts his hands on their heads, his clients start talking ... often about their most intimate secrets?”

In her most recent play, “The Salon”, Holderness resident Jessica Hoffmann Davis introduces the audience to Mario, hairdresser extraordinaire, and his salon favorites. “The Salon”,

coming to the Little Church Theater on Thursday, Aug. 14, at 7:30 p.m., is guaranteed to be an evening of laughter and tears.

Jessica has two other hit plays, “Writes of Reunion” (2010) and “Houseguests” (2013), both directed by Davis and performed at the Little Church Theater. She has published and

lectured extensively on the role and promise of arts learning and believes that all children deserve the chance to think of themselves as artists, shaping and changing their own and others’ views of the world.

“It is a treasure to have such a talented, funny, and generous person so engaged with the Little Church Theater,” said Executive Director Bill Tedrow.

Jessica holds a doctorate in Human Development and Psychology and a master’s degree in Teaching, Learning, and Curriculum Environments from Harvard University where she went on to be a senior lecturer and held the university’s first chair in the Arts in Education.

She retired from the Harvard

Graduate School of Education in 2005, in large part to focus on a book about her mother and the extraordinary school she directed for almost four decades, the Hoffmann School for Individual Development in Riverdale NY. Davis’ educational memoir, Ordinary Gifted Children: The Power and Promise of Individual Attention, was published by Teachers College Press in 2010. She currently is writing full-time and continues to be an advocate for arts education. See jessicahoffmanndavis.com for additional information.

This is the 11th season of summer performances at the Little Church Theater on the shores of Squam Lake in Holderness. For tickets and information, call 603-968-2250 or email [email protected].

By Kathi Caldwell-HopperOff-highway recreational vehicles,

or OHRVs, are motorized fun for the entire family. According to Dennis Etchells Jr., the NH Fish and Game Department’s OHRV program assistant, “Side-by-side ATVs are the number one-selling motorized vehicle in the country.”

This attests to the popularity of the peppy, motorized vehicles that provide fun and excitement to families all over New Hampshire. There are many clubs in the Granite State, as well as governance by the state to provide trail information, safety tips, and more to riders.

Dennis said families are among the largest groups that enjoy off-road vehicle fun. In order to meet the needs of the public, the state via the Fish and Game Department has provided a lot of information on the website www.wildlife.state.nh.us.

The new Ride the Wild system in Coos County offers one of the largest interconnected trail systems in the eastern United States, with 1,000-plus miles of interconnected trails.

Seeing the popularity of OHRVs as a way to boost the northern New Hampshire economy after the closing of area paper mills and other businesses, a group was formed to bring OHRV enthusiasts to New Hampshire and specifically to the North Country.

Harry Brown, a northern New Hampshire resident who serves as president of the NH Off Highway Vehicle Association (NHOHVA), says

he and others in his part of the state were looking for economic initiatives to boost the North Country’s economy. They saw that creating off-road trails and an awareness of the fun of riding

Off Highway Vehicle Adventuresthe trails would be a good way to bring business to the area.

Explained Harry, “We formed an off-highway coalition made up of about 20 clubs and some local chamber of commerces to create Ride the Wilds, which offers 1,000 miles of OHRV trails.”

It surely helped the effort when the state created Jericho Mountain State Park, a wonderful off-road riding area in Berlin. Jericho Mountain State Park has miles of trail riding for all-terrain and utility vehicles (ATVs and UTVs), trail bikes, and snowmobile enthusiasts alike. The park is open to the public and more miles will likely be added to the trail network over time. The park also offers a group of “primitive campsites”, including some cabins and tent sites and recreational vehicle spots.

Ride the Wilds is yet another great way to enjoy off-road vehicles, along with Jericho State Park. The interconnected riding trails mean that participants can ride all over the North Country on trails that take them into the great outdoors.

The initiatives have provided quite a big boost to the North Country economy. “People are coming from • ATVConintued on page 4

many states, such as Pennsylvania, New York, and Connecticut, to ride the trails. All the towns on the system are user-friendly: Riders can drive their OHRV into the towns on the system for supplies, gas, food, and shopping. For example, if in Gorham, riders can travel through the downtown area and get on the trail system at the junction of routes 16 and 2; it is a unique trail and area,” said Harry.

Before getting out on the trails, Dennis said it is important to know the rules. “You can go online and get a lot of good information and also access information through the Bureau of Trails in New Hampshire. Many trails are on private lands and are maintained by the Bureau.” (It is vital not to go on land where permission is not granted to do so.)

The site www.nhatv.com offers a number of Before You Ride tips. The ATV Safety Institute’s Golden Rules:

Always wear a DOT [Department of Transportation]-compliant helmet, goggles, long sleeves, long pants, over-the-ankle boots, and gloves.

Never ride on paved roads except to cross when done safely and permitted by law — another vehicle could hit you. ATVs are designed to be operated off-highway.

Never ride under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Never carry a passenger on a single-rider ATV, and no more than one passenger on an ATV specifically designed for two people.

Ride an ATV that is the right size for

your age.Supervise riders younger

than 16; ATVs are not toys.Ride only on designated

trails and at a safe speed.Take a hands-on ATV

Rider Course and an online E-Course.

Dennis adds, “Anyone 12 years of age or older without a valid driver’s license is required to take a safety course.” This can be an online course or done through a traditional classroom course in New Hampshire. An ATV/OHRV must be registered through the NH Fish and Game Department at any point-of-sale agent. No title is required but other pertinent information may be needed, so bring all paperwork.

According to the NH Fish and Game’s website www.wildlife.state.us, “All OHRVs that are used off of the

owner’s property must be registered. Cars and trucks are not permitted on OHRV trails.”

As for where you are allowed to ride in New Hampshire, www.wildlife.state.us offers, “More than 6,900 miles of snowmobile trails may be open in the winter to most types of snowmobiles and OHRVs. Landowner

permission is required to operate on property of another. You can only ride on trails designated and signed for your type of vehicle. Snowmobile trails are only open during the winter months unless written landowner permission is obtained.”

A number of clubs have formed in New Hampshire to provide rider information and teamwork for trail upkeep and more. There is a list of those clubs at www.nhatv.com/atv-clubs.

The upcoming fall season will bring a fun event to New Hampshire

with the Ride the Wilds Jamboree Fall Spectacular in Colebrook on Saturday, Sept. 20. The event benefits Court-Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of New Hampshire and will take place at Bear Rock Adventures in Colebrook with a chance to ride on the Ride the Wild’s network of interconnected trails, to go on

geocaching adventures, drag racing through a mud pit, take scenic fall ATV tours, indulge in great food, and shop artisan vendors and more. CASA provides advocacy for child victims of abuse. For more information on the Ride the Wilds Jamboree, see www.casanh.org/ridethewildsjamboree.

Dr. Alan Rabinowitz, one of the world’s leading big cat experts, will be the keynote speaker at the annual meeting of the Squam Lakes Natural Science Center on Aug. 9. Time Magazine has called Alan “The Indiana Jones of Wildlife Conservation”. Currently the chief executive officer of Panthera, a nonprofit organization devoted to saving the world’s wild cat species he co-founded with the organization’s chair, Dr. Thomas S. Kaplan, Alan also served as the executive director of the Science and Exploration Division for the Wildlife Conservation Society for almost 30 years.

Alan has traveled the world on behalf of wildlife conservation and, over the years, has studied jaguars, clouded leopards, Asiatic leopards, tigers, Sumatran rhinos, bears, leopard cats, raccoons, and civets. His work in Belize resulted in the world’s first jaguar sanctuary. His work in Taiwan resulted in the establishment of the country’s largest protected area and last piece of intact lowland forest. His work in Thailand generated the first field research on Indochinese tigers, Asiatic leopards, and leopard cats in what was to become the region’s first World Heritage Site. His work in Myanmar led to the creation of five new protected areas, including the country’s first marine national park, the first and largest Himalayan national park, and the world’s largest tiger reserve in the Hukaung Valley.

Alan has written more than 100 scientific and popular articles and six books, including Jaguar: One Man’s Struggle to Establish the First Jaguar Preserve (1986/2000), Chasing the Dragon’s Tail: The Struggle to Save Thailand’s Wild Cats (1991/2002), Beyond the Last Village: A Journey of Discovery in Asia’s Forbidden Wilderness (2001), and Life in the Valley of Death: The Fight to Save Tigers in a Land of Guns, Gold, and Greed (2008).

He also wrote a children’s book, A Boy and a Jaguar. His most recent book, An Indomitable Beast: The Remarkable Journey of the Jaguar, will be released in September.

He is the subject of an acclaimed PBS/National Geographic television special, In Search of the Jaguar, and will be featured in the upcoming BBC special, Lost Land of the Tiger, filmed in Bhutan in 2010. He also will be featured in a soon-to-be-released film by acclaimed documentarian and Holderness resident George Butler. The film, “Tiger, Tiger”, was recorded in India and will be released in the spring of 2015.

“We are thrilled to have Dr. Rabinowitz as our keynote this year,” said Iain MacLeod, executive director of the Science Center. “His pioneering work on behalf of our planet’s most vulnerable predators is inspiring and his impact and legacy outstanding. I can’t wait to meet him and hear him speak.”

The Science Center’s annual meeting and Summer Celebration will begin at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday Aug. 9, with a brief annual business meeting from 5:30 to 6. The Summer Celebration will include a cash bar, heavy hors d’oeuvres, and a live auction. Dr. Rabinowitz’s presentation will begin at 7:30 and will be followed by a book-signing at 8:30.

Members may attend the business meeting free of charge. Tickets for the Summer Celebration featuring

12th Annual Woods, Water, and Wildlife Festival On Aug. 9

The 12th annual Woods, Water, and Wildlife Festival, co-sponsored by Moose Mountains Regional Greenways and Branch Hill Farm/the Carl Siemon Family Charitable Trust, will take place on Saturday, Aug. 9, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., at 307 Applebee Road in Milton Mills.

Several new fun and educational activities will be featured at this year’s festival. A Tree Farm hayride will showcase low-impact horse logging. Mitchell Horse Logging will demonstrate twitching and decking logs and scooting them out of the woods with a team of horses and a traditional New England log scoot.

Children will be able to satisfy their curiosity about the little aquatic creatures that inhabit the rivers and lakes and will have the opportunity to handle one of the benthic macro-invertebrates brought by the Acton Wakefield Watersheds Alliance, or examine them with a Discovery Scope.

Try tying a fly for your own fishing line after a lesson from Dick Turgeon.

Returning festival attendees will see their favorite activities. Volunteer instructors from the NH Fish & Game Department will lend poles and bait to youths for the Let’s Go Fishing! event at the pond. Nature experts from Squam Lakes Natural Science Center will display rescued animals; and the Traveling Barnyard has a petting zoo.

Junior Ecologist Hayrides to the Salmon Falls River stop for a lesson about the importance of streams for

wildlife and water quality. Our Kids Discover the Forest and Nature’s Playground events feature stations among the ferns and tall trees.

Staff members from nearby farm museums, local crafters, and a beekeeper will demonstrate traditional rural skills. Children will be able to get creative in the Tree Cookie Craft Corner and try building their own birdhouses, as well as exploring the corn maze.

Comedian Gallagher Brings Farewell Show To Plymouth

The Flying Monkey Perfor-mance Center in Plymouth will play host to comedian Gallagher on Sat-urday, Aug. 9, at 7:30 p.m. Famous for smashing watermelons on stage, he will be hanging up his “sledge-o-matic” after this farewell tour which marks the end of a nearly 40-year career.

Gallagher has been pulverizing all manner of produce on stage with a sledgehammer, but his true genius lies in his stand-up comedy. He is known to make razor-sharp obser-vations, offer hilarious, dead-on in-sights, and use incredibly creative wordplay.

He did 14 Showtime specials during the height of his career in the 1980s and captured headlines as a candidate for governor in the freewheeling 2003 California recall election. In one of his campaign ap-

pearances, he lamented the state of the nation’s collective IQ. “Don’t you wish there were a knob on the TV to turn up the intelligence?” he asked. “There’s one marked ‘bright-ness’ but it doesn’t work.”

Gallagher’s stage show has evolved over the years, and he now interacts more with his audiences. People from the crowd are often invited up on stage to share in the fun. Gallagher has a reputation as an audience-friendly performer who genuinely enjoys his gigs. He always takes extra time to sign au-tographs and pose for pictures with every fan in theater lobbies before and after performing.Tickets for Gallagher’s show are available at www.flyingmonkeynh.com, or call 603-536-2551.

Spa Offers Retreats Lasting An Hour Or A dayBy Thomas P. CaldwellHow about this? A pre-wedding

spa party in which you and your clos-est friends pack up some snacks and beverages (or hire a caterer) and take over a spa for a few hours? Instead of just having the hair styling and make-up done for the glorious day, indulge the whole wedding party in spa foot treatments, facial treatments, lash and brow tinting, spa body wraps … even hot stone massages. There are even grooms’ services: sportsman’s foot care, back treatment, hair removal, body treatments, and gentleman’s fa-cials.

All these and more are offered at Zen Glow Wellness and Beauty Spa in Wolfeboro. Founder and proprietor Susan L. Harubin said she is happy to lock the door and turn the salon into a private party spot where everyone can relax and hang out while making the rounds between the organic hair spa, the deluxe nail spa, and the massage rooms.

Susan, a board-certified, licensed aesthetician, began her career in 2003 after graduating from the Aesthetics Institute at Concord Academy. She worked at a couple of salons before

deciding she wanted to offer a more personal experience. “Working in sa-lons, it was a different vibe,” she said. “I wanted a place where people could come and let go of everything — a re-treat, even if only for an hour or a day.”

When she went out on her own, she

originally shared some space with Ka-ren Clark who had a yoga studio at Mirror Lake. It was there she came up with the name of her business: “Peo-ple would come out of a yoga session and say, ‘I’m glowing’. I liked that and grabbed the name ‘Zen Glow’ as the

name for my spa.”Early on, she found a sea salt scrub

that she thought would be a great ad-dition but, when she opened it, “It was disgusting!” She found it contained synthetics and chemicals which led her to develop her own, natural body line which she calls Glow Bella Naturals. Using pharmaceutical-grade, natural ingredients, she developed a number of creams, lotions, and body scrubs which she produces and packages herself.

When in 2005 she was diagnosed with cancer and had to close down while un-dergoing chemotherapy, she continued developing her line of products and finally was able to resume work part-time. She moved the business to Center Street, Wolfeboro, in 2009 where there was space “to do everything I wanted to do” with separate areas for the hair salon, the manicure and pedicure sa-lon, two massage rooms (one of which accommodates couples’ massage and doubles as an aesthetics room), and a comfortable lounge area. The back yard is very private, overlooking Back Bay, and she sometimes schedules spe-cial events such as morning yoga out

Manicures and nail treatments are very popular among the clients at Zen Glow. (Photo: Tom Caldwell)

there. In addition to her own products, she

uses natural, organic products in the hair salon. Organic Color Systems is the world’s first professional-only, am-monia-free, permanent hair color sys-tem that uses 100 percent certified or-ganic ingredients. “It’s all organic, and vegan, with no nasty fillers,” she said.

For makeup, she uses gloMinerals which has formulations for all skin types, including rosacea, acneic, and maturing skins. None of her products use animal byproducts or animal test-ing. “It’s the whole green factor,” she said. “There are no toxins for our cli-ents, or the people who work here.”

Clients range from summer resi-dents and visitors who come primar-ily for the hair and spa treatments to year-round residents who largely come for massages, although there is a lot of crossover. And wedding parties are huge, Susan said.

“Wolfeboro is a destination for wed-dings, and we have 32 pre-wedding spa parties scheduled for this year,” she said.

She has a hair stylist and licensed aesthetician on her staff and, depend-ing on the time of year, up to five mas-sage therapists assisting at different times. Zen Glow is open six days a week, Monday through Saturday, with an occasional Sunday, depending upon the demand.

“I’m really proud of this place,” Su-san said. “Once people come in, that’s where they stay when they need a mas-

sage or a facial.”Zen Glow has a large number of cli-

ents coming for the nail services, as well as hair and corrective skin care. “While clients are having their nails done, we offer them a glass of water or wine or pomegranate tea,” Susan said. “They like that personal experience.”

In addition to the wedding parties, Susan sees a lot of “girlfriend parties” where the clients bring in food and wine and make it their place while they have facials, massages, or hair treat-ments.

Massages range from deep-tissue treatments to Swedish massage, hot stone massage, craniofacial work, cou-ples’ massage, aromatherapy, and pre-natal massage.

Zen Glow also focuses on results-oriented skin care, with facials and skin treatment that focuses on rejuve-nation, stimulates collagen growth, and reduces rosacea, acne, and wrinkles. She uses low-frequency ultrasound and other techniques which she customizes in treating individual skin needs.

Those coming for a pedicure also get another form of aesthetics, for the ped-icure seats are custom-crafted, carved rosewood chairs from India. Susan en-joys picking up unique pieces at auc-tions and her spa displays several items she has acquired through the years, including a temple lantern she has dis-played in the main lounge.

Susan encourages anyone with ques-tions about treatments or the wellness and beauty options at Zen Glow to call her at 603-960-2735. Zen Glow is lo-cated at 98 Center Street, Wolfeboro Falls.

Michael Tougias To Present ‘Rescue of the Bounty’ Michael J. Tougias, co-author of

Rescue of the Bounty, will give a dramatic visual presentation about the event at the Gilford Public Library on Tuesday, Aug. 12, at 6:30 p.m.

The tall ship HMS Bounty, a re-creation of the 18th-century British navy vessel of the same name, constructed by a Canadian shipbuilder for the 1962 MGM film Mutiny on the Bounty starring Marlon Brando and Trevor Howard, sank during Hurricane Sandy in 2012. The captain and a crewmember perished in the accident but the Coast Guard performed harrowing helicopter rescues to save the other 14 sailors.

Michael will use slides of the storm, the survivors, and the rescue to present “an edge-of-your-seat” visual program.

The story begins on Oct. 25, 2012, when Captain Robin Walbridge made the fateful decision to sail the HMS

Bounty from New London CT to St. Petersburg FL. Walbridge was well aware that a hurricane was forecast to come up the Eastern Seaboard. He explained to his crew of 15 that the ship would fare better at sea than at port and that he thought he could sail around the hurricane. He told the crew that anyone who did not want to come on the voyage could leave the ship and there would be no hard feelings. No one took the captain up on his offer and that decision would have fatal consequences.

Four days into the voyage, Hurricane Sandy made an almost direct hit on the Bounty. The captain issued a Mayday alarm, explaining that the vessel’s pumps could not keep up with the incoming water. A few hours later, in the dark of night, the vessel suddenly heeled over, sending the crew tumbling into the ocean filled with crashing,

30-foot waves. Some were swept far from the ship; others found themselves tangled in the rigging; while others were trapped below the surface by the masts and spreaders.

“I enjoy doing these programs,” said Michel, “because I like to transport the audience into the heart of the storm so that they ask themselves, ‘What would I have done?’ It’s like watching a movie with the author giving behind-the-scene details.”

Michael said that, besides focusing on the voyage and the disaster, he will recount the rescue attempts by Coast Guard rescue swimmers and pilots. The presentation is suitable for all ages.

A book-signing will follow the program. Rescue of the Bounty is dedicated to librarians, whom Michael said are “national treasures”.

Known for his fast-paced writing style and character-driven stories,

Michael Tougias has written several true survival thrillers, including The Finest Hours which is currently being made into a major motion picture by the Disney Corporation. His other sea sagas include Overboard!, Fatal Forecast, A Storm Too Soon, and Ten Hours Until Dawn which was selected by the American Library Association as an Editor’s Choice.

Local Farm Stands Offer Fresh Selections of Seasonal ProduceBy Christine H. Randall

It’s getting to be that time of year in the Lakes Region when fresh vegeta-bles are near or at their peak, and if you didn’t have the energy, time, or space to plant your own garden this spring, farm stands and farmers’ markets are great alternatives. Not only is it nice to know just where your food is coming from; you just can’t beat the taste of freshly harvested, locally grown produce.

While both farm stands and farm-ers’ markets offer a variety of freshly made and/or grown products, they do have some differences. Farmers’ mar-kets are collections of diverse vendors brought together in one location for a specific length of time, typically one or two days per week, while farm stands tend to be at or near a privately owned family farm, and they are usually open every day during the growing season.Local farm stands include:• Abbott Farm390 Sanborn Road/Route 132, Tilton603-286-9424Vegetables, fruit, honey• Beans & Greens FarmstandAndrew & Martina Howe245 Intervale Road, Route 11B, Gilford • [email protected] Open 9 am – 6 pm, thru-October 29A full line of vegetables, pick-your-own strawberries, cut your own flowers, on site bakery, flower bouquets, baskets and other garden items, corn maze in the autumn.

The New Hampshire Music Festival has added a mentoring program, New Vibrations, that pairs students with audience members to facilitate their learning more about how an orchestra works. The groups will attend the NHMF classics concerts on either Thursday or Saturday throughout the summer season.

Liz Cody of Ashland came up with the

idea for the program as a way to bring in a younger demographic to festival performances. “I was at a concert and thinking about how inspired I felt by the music, how transformational the experience was,” Liz said. “If we could involve more kids and get them interested in music at a younger age, we will have a whole new generation of musicians and audience members

and ensure that organizations such as the [NH Music] Festival will always have a place in our region. These are the future leaders of our community.”

Liz will be one of the group leaders, along with board member Sid Lovett. Each is recruiting four other mentors from their towns to participate, for a total of 10 audience members in the initial group.

“We hope that other towns will hear about the program and want to be involved. It would be great if we were able to add more towns and students each week, and also include other types of activities, such as theatre or dance. This is really an opportunity to promote music and arts education in a fun way,” Lovett said of the idea.

Students of all ages are welcome to join New Vibrations. The NH Music Festival is seeking volunteers from all towns to serve as mentors. Each volunteer will purchase a ticket and accompany the group to the Family Concert, which is free to all youths 18 and under, as well as college students with an ID.

Students are encouraged to ask questions; learn more about the

instruments, music, and orchestra; and meet with some of the musicians to hear about their experiences as members of the NH Music Festival. After the concert, the group will grab an ice cream at M ‘n M Scoops on Main Street in Plymouth.

Plymouth Friends of the Arts and the Arts Alliance of Northern New Hampshire will be involved with the project and Frumie Selchen, the executive director of the Arts Alliance, said she is excited to bring this type of initiative to the community.

“We were so happy to hear about this idea, particularly because it has a great synergy with other programs we are doing. Being able to offer this as part of our Youth Arts initiative provides students with a wide variety of opportunities to experience all types of visual and performing arts. We hope that enthusiasm for these types of programs will allow us to offer them year-round,” Frumie said.

For further information or to purchase tickets for the NH Music Festival, visit www.nhmf.org or call the Silver Center for the Arts box office at 603-535-2787.

Historic Buildings: The Laconia Railroad StationBy Kathi Caldwell-Hopper

Train travel once was the stuff of which dreams were made. Children from California to New England would come running when they heard the distant whistle of the train as it chugged along through the countryside. When the train approached, children (and adults) would wave and yell hello. Trains were exotic, a link to the larger world where wonders and people from far-away places came tantalizingly closer, if only for a moment or two.

The Lakes Region was no different from any other area of the country when it came to admiring the train. When 1800s-era tourists discovered the delights of a rural New Hampshire visit, they needed a way to get to the Lakes Region and the White Mountains for relaxing summer vacations. The advent of trains to the area offered Boston and New York City tourists a much faster way to get to their chosen summer vacation spots than tedious and uncomfortable horse-and-wagon travel.

Laconia was a hub of activity, with streetcars and factories and small businesses lining the streets at that time. The train played a big role in city growth and most people welcomed the idea of a large train station.

According to the article Victorian Railroad Station of Laconia, NH on the Lake Winnipesaukee Museum website (www.lwhs.us), the idea to replace Laconia’s original, one-room railroad station came from Charles A. Busiel, a successful Laconia businessman

who also served as a New Hampshire governor. Busiel was at one time a managing director of the Concord Railroad.

The original passenger depot in Laconia’s downtown area was a “mere wooden shell” according to the Illustrated Laconian: History and Industries of Laconia, N.H. The small wooden building had been used for ticket purchases and as a place for passengers to board and disembark various trains since the railroad opened some years before.

The idea was to build a large station due to the number of trains and passengers and commerce that had come to downtown Laconia. The station had to be big because it would be a hub of activity. At that time (late 1800s) the ornate Victorian architectural style leaned toward stone structures, lots of ornamentation, and a heavy design to buildings.

The train station was fashioned in a Romanesque Revival Style made popular by architect Henry Hobson Richardson. When the Laconia Railroad Station (also known as the Laconia Passenger Station or Boston and Maine Railroad Station) was built, Richardson’s style was at the height of popularity.

In April 1891, the contract was signed to build the new railroad station. The chosen contractor was S.S. Ordway & Co. of Massachusetts. Between the construction of the building and the “heating apparatus” needed for the new station, the price tag was $30,000.

Property was purchased at a tune of $22,000 and homes that had sat on the land were removed. That allowed the entire area to be cleared, making plenty of room for the station, trains, and tracks. The City of Laconia worked with the railroad to enlarge the railroad square area and purchased additional land for the project as well.

The station’s architect was Bradford Gilbert, known for designing the first steel-framed curtain wall building in New York. Gilbert also designed a number of railroad stations; those structures seem to have been his specialty.

When completed, according to an article in the Laconia Democrat concerning the August 1892 dedication

of the station, “The main features of the building are the port-cochere at the entrance and the large general waiting room or rotunda, open to the roof, with clerestory windows on all sides. The floor of this room is of tile, and the walls to a height of ten feet are finished in quartered oak, and above that plastered and tinted in two shades of chrome.”

Without a doubt, the most striking architectural feature of the station was its central waiting room, more than 50 feet in height. The groined ceiling with curved beams amazed passengers who came into the room.

Visitors were treated to the visual beauty of hand-carved elements and a massive, welcoming, red sandstone fireplace. The room was ringed with the previously mentioned clerestory stained glass windows that brought in a great deal of natural light, probably welcome in the days before electricity.

Off the large waiting room, smaller areas housed passenger ticket and baggage offices, public rest rooms, and taxi services. To the east and west of the center interior sections were covered platforms.

The station’s exterior was built of light gray rusticated granite, capped by a squat, massive tower that served as the focal point for the structure. The granite was highlighted by red sandstone trim and the stonework was set in a red mortar.

A wide, linear hip roof covered the waiting platforms, the porte-cochere, and waiting room and offices. The roof was of a dark gray slate and the roofline was embellished with terra cotta detailing.

Due to the era in which the station was designed, the heavy hand of the ornate Victorian influence was evident in the carved detailing in granite and sandstone at the column caps and window openings.

The beautiful building stood up well. When the era of train travel eventually faded into history, it could have been the end for the building.

The Boston and Maine Railroad

operated the station until 1958. By the 1950s, train travel was not as necessary, as many people owned automobiles. A station such as the Laconia building was probably costly to run, with heating bills and upkeep of the ornate old building.

The City of Laconia purchased the building and continued to provide rail service until the last Boston and Maine passenger train came to Laconia on Jan. 3, 1965.

City officials must have seen the writing on the wall and decided to use the station for other purposes. Fortunately for future generations, the building was spared from the wrecking ball of the 1960s urban renewal effort that saw many historic Laconia downtown area structures razed.

In 1963, Laconia began to renovate the station for use as the Laconia Police Department and the Laconia District Court. Both the police department and the court remained in the building until 1979.

Since then, the building has attracted many businesses and it continues to house a variety of shops. Over the years, the old railroad station has served as an office for the local chamber of commerce, as a coffee shop, a jewelry store, a floral shop, various restaurants, and bank offices.

While the lure and romance of train travel is mostly a thing of the past, the beautiful Laconia Railroad Station has found new and useful life. It stands as a reminder of a time when the coming of a train brought the larger outside world with its many delights to Laconia.

Notes From The Arborist

Japanese BeetlePopillia japonica

Description The adult beetle is about half an inch long with bronze and metallic green coloring. Affected Species Roses, Birches, Lindens, Purple Plums, Cherry, and Dogwoods are favorites, however almost any plant with a succulent leaf is a potential target for this hungry beetle. Symptoms & Damage The adult beetle is a voracious feeder causing skeletonization of leaves. At the grub stage, they eat turf roots, which can cause extensive damage to your lawn. Prevention & Treatment Control is best achieved in the larval stage by treating your lawn during the summer or fall to reduce the beetle population for the following year. Adult beetles can be suppressed now with repeated organic or traditional spraying. Pheromone lures are not recommended – they attract more beetles than they trap.

Great Waters Offers Beatles TributeBy Susan Dennett

Hailed by critics and fans alike as an authentic Beatles tribute, “1964” recreates an early ‘60s live Beatle concert with period instruments, clothing, hairstyles, and onstage banter. Having played to sold-out shows at Carnegie Hall and Red Rocks, 1964 will bring its show to Wolfeboro as part of the Great Waters Music Festival on Friday, Aug. 8, at 8 p.m. The performance take place at the Kingswood Arts Center on MacManus Road and tickets are available through the Great Waters website, www.greatwaters.org.

The group comprises Mark Benson (John Lennon), Graham Alexander (Paul McCartney), Tom Work (George Harrison), and Bobby Potter (Ringo Starr). More than 20 years of researching and performing have

made 1964: The Tribute masters of their craft. Graham Alexander learned to play the bass left-handed to more accurately portray Paul while Mark Benson maintains all the instruments. He custom-made his two Rickenbacker 325s to more closely resemble and sound like the original Lennon guitars. As well as maintaining the instruments, Benson produces all aspects of the show and produced the 1964 CDs, “All You Need Is Live”, “Nine Hours In November”, and “Bootleg” Vol. 1.

The Great Waters Music Festival is a non-profit organization dedicated to bringing outstanding musical performances to people living in and visiting the Lakes Region. For more information and tickets, stop by the office at 15 Varney Road in Wolfeboro, call 603-569-7710, or go online to www.greatwaters.org.

Author Leslie Fabian in Wolfeboro

Leslie Hilburn Fabian, author of My Husband Is a Woman Now: A Shared Journey of Transition and Love, will speak about her experiences as a wife supporting her husband’s transition from male to female on Tuesday, Aug. 12, at the Wolfeboro Public Library. The 7 p.m. program is free and open to all.

In 2009, Fabian’s husband, David, was dissatisfied with life and struggled with depression. An orthopedic surgeon who had been privately cross-dressing for most of his life, David realized that brief forays into the world as Deborah were no longer enough.

For two decades, Leslie had witnessed her husband’s devastation each time he returned to his male persona. She

encouraged him to begin the process of becoming who he longed to be.

A year into David’s two-year transition to become Deborah, Leslie began writing, using it as a powerful outlet for her own challenging process. Her book, published in early 2014, chronicles the details of the remarkable journey she and David, now Deborah, have traveled together.

Along with Leslie, Deborah will speak of life before, during, and after the transition. A book-signing will follow the presentation.

For more information, call Cindy Scott at the Wolfeboro Public Library at 603-569-2428 or visit www.wolfeborolibrary.org.

Belknap Mill Seeks Local Artists For Art Bazaar

The Belknap Mill of Laconia is seeking local artisans to show and sell handmade goods at its inaugural Belknap Mill Art Bazaar in Rotary Park. The opening day is scheduled Saturday, Aug. 9, and it will continue on various Saturdays from August through October, with hours of 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The Belknap Mill is organizing the art bazaar in an effort to support artists and artisans in the Lakes Region. The juried market will feature hand-made and locally produced products, including fine art, jewelry, ceramics, crafts, apparel, accessories, and fair trade/eco-friendly products. Parking and admission are free.

“The idea of an open arts market is

to encourage people to support local artists and showcase the Belknap Mill as a cultural arts center,” said Beth San Soucie, program director of the Belknap Mill. “It’s a perfect addition to a Saturday, as the art bazaar times coordinate with the Laconia Farmer’s Market.”

Any local artist interested in participating must have a completed application with the inclusion of a vendor fee. Ten-foot by 10-foot spaces are allotted on a first-come, first-served basis, but artists must provide their own tables, chairs, tents, etc. Items for sale must be original.

For more information on how to become a vendor, email Scott at [email protected] or call 603-524-8813.

Lakes Region audiences have the privilege of being the first in New England to see a play the New York Times calls “intelligent, cynical, disturbing, and easy for 21st-century theatergoers to relate to” — George Brant’s “Any Other Name” which is on stage at the Winnipesaukee Playhouse on Aug. 6 - 16.

Set in Victorian England, the exciting the melodrama introduces a brilliant poet who languishes in a dank

asylum while a ruthless husband-and-wife team plots to steal his identity and, with it, the fortune and glory they believe await him. As the couple gets pulled further and further into their own deceit, the audience may be left wondering just who is sane and who is mad.

The production, directed by Bryan Halperin, will be the Playhouse audience’s only chance to see actor Richard Brundage on stage this

summer. Richard, returning for his sixth season, became a Playhouse fan favorite with performances including Passepartout in “Around the World in 80 Days”, Louis de Rougemont in “Shipwrecked”, and Moriarty in “Sherlock Holmes: The Final Adventure”. In “Any Other Name”, Richard plays John Clark, a poet whose fame has receded since entering an asylum. Struggling poet Edward, played by Nicholas Wilder, and his wife, Margaret, played by Rebecca Tucker, discover Clark’s whereabouts and set out to steal his latest poems in order to receive a hefty advance from Clark’s former publisher, played by Toby Miller.

“Any Other Name” begs the question of how far someone will go in their insatiable hunger for fame and fortune, proving to be both relatable and compelling to a modern audience. With first-rate performances from a brilliant cast and top-quality production values, “Any Other Name” is a must-see

for audiences eager to experience something new and exciting this summer.

The Winnipesaukee Playhouse provides a full evening of food and entertainment. Drinks, light meals, and snacks are available before each performance. Patrons can enjoy their food and drink outdoors, either in the sun or under shade, while being entertained by free “Busker Alley” pre-show performances of live music on the outdoor stage. Buskers will be performing on selected nights, so be sure to check the website ahead of time to catch these acts.

“Any Other Name” is the fourth play of the summer season performed at the new Winnipesaukee Playhouse campus in Meredith, and it is recommended for those age 13 and above. Performances are Mondays through Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. with an additional matinee on Monday, Aug. 11, at 2 p.m. Tickets are available at 603-279-0333 or www.winnipesaukeeplayhouse.org. Student

Program On The Building Of The Panama Canal Coming To Wolfeboro

George Stosur will present the free program “Panama Canal: From Moving Mountains To Killing Mosquitoes” at the Wolfeboro Public Library on Thursday, Aug. 7, at 7 p.m.

In building the Panama Canal, the world’s most important shortcut between two oceans, it is arguable whether moving mountains or killing mosquitos proved to be more difficult. Stosur’s presentation will cover the initial French attempt with its eventual bankruptcy to the successful completion of the canal by the United States. Also covered will be the man who “spoke softly but carried a big stick” as well as Dr. Gorgas with his mosquito campaign, Walter Reed of Washington fame, George Goethals whose tough military management completed the canal under budget and ahead of schedule, and Woodrow Wilson who triggered the last big

explosive that marked the completion of the construction.

The herculean effort was completed 100 years ago, with the first ship sailing the Panama Canal on Aug. 14, 1914. The lecture also will cover the current work to build an even larger Panama Canal and will include many photographs and diagrams.

George Stosur recently retired from the US Department of Energy where he directed research related to global energy resources and climate change. He now is a part-time teacher and a speaker on world energy issues, maritime sciences, environmental problems, and unusual earth-sea phenomena.

For more information, call Cindy Scott at the Wolfeboro Public Library at 603-569-2428 or visit www.wolfeborolibrary.org.

See Vintage BoatsAt Alton Bay Boat Show

If you love to look at antique and classic motorboats, the NH Boat Museum’s 38th annual Alton Bay Boat Show is the place for you. Scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 9, from 9 a.m. to noon, the show will take place at the Alton Bay Public Docks on Lake Winnipesaukee.

The event is an informal, non-judged vintage boat show that is open to all antique and classic boats. No advance registration is necessary and there is no cost to enter a boat or to attend the show as a spectator.

The Alton Bay Boat Show provides a great opportunity for spectators to view

some of the most beautiful boats on Lake Winnipesaukee. Attendees will be able to vote for the People’s Choice Awards, given to the top three entries.

Typically on view at the Alton Bay Boat Show are iconic brands such as Chris-Craft, Lyman, Garwood, Hackercraft, and Century. The boats range in style from runabouts and cruisers to triple cockpits.

To learn more about the boat show, visit the NH Boat Museum’s website, www.nhbm.org, or call 603-569-4554. The boat show is part of a number of activities taking place in Alton on Aug. 10, Alton Old Home Day.
