In The Spotlight Lola Lakehouse
Welcome to The Lakehouse West Neighborhood
Abe Zeewy was born in
Romania but left when he
was 18 years old because
conditions were not
favorable for Jews He
overcame the odds and
managed to get to Israel in
1948 the year that Israel
gained its independence
While in Israel he was
drafted into the army and
was trained as an
electronic technician
After Abersquos stay in Israel he traveled to Paris There
he studied electrical engineering for four years Abe
then secured a position in Switzerland as a Chief
Engineer where he developed instruments for the
watch industry
In 1967 Abe arrived in the US and settled in
Cleveland because he was offered a position as a
product engineer Abe taught electronics at Case
Western University In 1977 he started his own
business in electronics which became quite successful
In 1989 a close friend of Abersquos offered him his
apartment in Siesta Key for a short visit Abe fell in
love with Siesta Key and Sarasota and moved
permanently to Sarasota in 2002 This year Abe chose
to make his new home at Lakehouse West
Abe has two children a son who is a lawyer and lives
in Atlanta and a daughter a graphic arts expert who
lives in Philadelphia
As a world traveler Abe saw most of Europe South
America and Asia The one thing that impressed him
the most was when he visited Xian China where he
explored the emperor Qinrsquos terra cotta army of
sculptures
Abe is fluent in Romanian French Hebrew and
English Quite impressive He has varied interests
such as lecturing joke telling and attending theater
opera and concerts
Abe looks forward to participating in bocce the
walking program and lecture programs Abe is
certainly an asset to our Lakehouse West family
Welcome Abe
Interview by Shirley Kritt
What In the World Are they Wearing
Recent questions about our Lakehouse West dress code for
the Dining Room prompted me to take a second look at this
yearrsquos fall fashions Forgive my bewilderment but am I the
only one who thinks that designers are confusing their
creations with Halloween
While fur is not a Florida favorite it seems to be popular
everywhere else this year The shoulders on coats are
constructed of fluffy fox that obscures the face of the model
making her look like an NFL fullback and making me won-
der how she can maintain her balance On the other hand
perhaps itrsquos meant to hide her wrinkled neck Thatrsquos not all
bad but should it be decorating bathing suits as well
Therersquos also some confusion about skirt lengthshow high
is too high And oh those necklines the ones that plunge
beyond the usual limits defying coverage by a scarf to
suggest instead the possibility of a plunge to the floor
Nor do gentlemen escape these cartoonish costumes Has
the idea of wearing a blazer and slacks for casual occasions
been replaced by knee socks and pants that look like a skirt
Do instructions on how to sit down gracefully come along
with the rather obscene price tag
Whatever the inspiration for these crazy costumes Irsquom not
buying it If anyone shows up at your front door wearing
them on October 31 let them look in your closet to see what
real people are wearing this year

Dr ldquoSandyrdquo Gordon is a
retired economics professor who
taught at the State University of

He served as an important
member of academic groups
throughout his career After
moving to Florida he continued
his interest in the field and when
he retired to Lakehouse West he
shared his extensive knowledge
through a popular lecture series for residents
But did you know that Sandy is also an excellent and
enthusiastic bridge player He and his late wife were
introduced to the game by friends and the couple found
Duplicate Bridge to be an inexpensive mentally
challenging way to socialize Typically Sandy took to the
game often staying up late to replay hands even as he knew
he had to be teaching students economics at 800 am
When he came to Lakehouse West he was looking for more
competitive bridge and encouraged by others Sandy took
over as Lakehouse West Bridge Director Traditional ldquorubberrdquo
bridge is the game of choice and members of the four teams

An ldquoOverdue Noticerdquo from the Library
There seems to be some confusion about taking books from
our Lakehouse West Library located on the 3rd floor So
wersquod like to go over the procedures We do not use
individual library cards but we do have some simple ways
to track our books and keep them circulating When you
select a book go to the Notebook on the
desk and record the following
1 The date that you are borrowing the
book 2 The authorrsquos name 3 Your name
4 Your apartment number 5 The last
column is where you will record the date
you return the book
On the last page of the book you are
borrowing you will see a place to record
the date you are borrowing the book
(this should be the same as ldquo1rdquo above) and your apartment
number (same as ldquo4rdquo) This will also help you to easily find
the entry in the Notebook on the desk when returning the
book
Please do not exchange a book with another reader until you
have officially returned it and the new reader has officially
borrowed it in hisher name If you wish to donate a book
please leave it on the counter near the sink so that we may
process it before shelving We always welcome comments
suggestions from our readers

Welcome to The Lakehouse West Neighborhood
Abe Zeewy was born in
Romania but left when he
was 18 years old because
conditions were not
favorable for Jews He
overcame the odds and
managed to get to Israel in
1948 the year that Israel
gained its independence
While in Israel he was
drafted into the army and
was trained as an
electronic technician
After Abersquos stay in Israel he traveled to Paris There
he studied electrical engineering for four years Abe
then secured a position in Switzerland as a Chief
Engineer where he developed instruments for the
watch industry
In 1967 Abe arrived in the US and settled in
Cleveland because he was offered a position as a
product engineer Abe taught electronics at Case
Western University In 1977 he started his own
business in electronics which became quite successful
In 1989 a close friend of Abersquos offered him his
apartment in Siesta Key for a short visit Abe fell in
love with Siesta Key and Sarasota and moved
permanently to Sarasota in 2002 This year Abe chose
to make his new home at Lakehouse West
Abe has two children a son who is a lawyer and lives
in Atlanta and a daughter a graphic arts expert who

Golf Director
Jackie Garn
Dr ldquoSandyrdquo Gordon is a
retired economics professor who
taught at the State University of
New York among many others
He served as an important
member of academic groups
throughout his career After
moving to Florida he continued
his interest in the field and when
he retired to Lakehouse West he
shared his extensive knowledge
through a popular lecture series for residents
But did you know that Sandy is also an excellent and
enthusiastic bridge player He and his late wife were
introduced to the game by friends and the couple found
Duplicate Bridge to be an inexpensive mentally
challenging way to socialize Typically Sandy took to the
game often staying up late to replay hands even as he knew
he had to be teaching students economics at 800 am
When he came to Lakehouse West he was looking for more
competitive bridge and encouraged by others Sandy took
over as Lakehouse West Bridge Director Traditional ldquorubberrdquo
bridge is the game of choice and members of the four teams
choose the day time and place for the monthly games With
the help of Lenny Lentz Bridge Co-chairman Sandy keeps
bridge at Lakehouse West running smoothly
Oscar Arnay as with many
other residents here is reluctant
to talk about himself preferring
instead to focus on the here and
now and what he calls ldquoThe three
Fs at Lakehouse West facilities
food and friendshiprdquo But when
pressed Oscar admits that it may
have been his career in domestic
and international public relations
that gave him the skills to make a
difference here Oscar has served
as treasurer of the Residentsrsquo Association chaired the
Associationrsquos 2013 Holiday Fund Committee and was an
enthusiastic member of the Bocce league On the social side
he regularly co-hosts ldquoWelcome Tablesrdquo with Jackie Garn
Did you also know that Oscar is the behind- the- scenes
proof-reader for Newsbits where his careful attention to
language and content help to keep us informed every month
Oscar says he enjoys doing it and Social Director John
Dionne is grateful for his help so itrsquos a win-win for everyone
