Lake Waconia Regional Park Groundbreaking Approximately 50 people attended the groundbreaking celebration on Tuesday, July 23rd, for the first phase of Lake Waconia Regional Park and Coney Island of the West. Representatives in attendance included Carver County Commissioners and other county officials, state and local city government representatives, and the Norman and Ann Hoffman family that made generous donations to this project. The first phase will construct parking lots, road, municipal sewer and water utility lines, site grading for future improvements, and a DNR watercraft access. Future plans include an Event Center overlooking Lake Waconia, Pedestrian Pier, Central Plaza and Outdoor Gas Fire Pit, Open Air Picnic Shelter, Restrooms and Concessions Building, Pollinator Rain Gardens, Splash Pad Area, and Trails. Carver County Commissioner Randy Maluchnik stated, This is the start of a new chapter that has been for many years in the state of planning. There was a tremendous amount of support from four different governmental units and the help of Norman and Ann Hoffman to return the island to public use. Coney Island of the West is a place of discovery, said Randy. Id like to thank our staff and WSB Construction Engineering Company for coming to commemorate the groundbreaking. Said Carver County Commissioner Tim Lynch, We thank the Norman Hoffman family. We thank Joe Hoppe (former member of the MN House of Representatives), Representative Jim Nash, Senator Scott Jensen, Representative Greg Boe. Without all of your support, we wouldnt be celebrating today.Commissioner Lynch also thanked the City of Waconia and funding from the Metropolitan Council that made possible this 160-acre gem.Said Deb Barber, Metropolitan Council member, Our park system is the envy of the nation and will draw visitors from near and far.For details on the park, visit www.co.carver.mn.us.
