Blueberry

2/8/09 Built in 1941 this tugboat is owned by the

Fremont Tugboat Company. It is still in

operation as a tugboat. It was a visiting vessel

for the Tugboat Event and was open for free

public tours.

Grace (formerly Grace Foss)

2/8/09 Built in 1968, this Tugboat is also owned and

operated by the Fremont Tugboat Company. It

was a visiting vessel at the Historic Ships

Wharf for the Tugboat Event and was open

for free public tours.

ITEMS OF INTEREST

2/8 & 2/15 - Free Boat Rides at CWB: Free Public Rides were provided for 85 visitors

aboard the Wooden longboat the HMS Discovery, the New Haven Sharpie, the Betsy D, and

the Wooden Fantail Yacht, the Allure. CWB provides free boat rides year-round through its

‘Cast Off’ program, sailing on boats that are part of CWB’s collection or are visiting vessels

at the Historic Ships Wharf.

2/8 RC Modelers sailed boats at the CWB docks – 20+ participants: On Sunday, January 8th

approximately 20 people came down to the Center for Wooden Boats to sail their impressive

remote control ship models in the water around the docks. The activity brought many people

down to the docks and Lake Union Park to watch and enjoy the models.

2/8 Black & White Photography Class Visits the Wharf – 25 students: On Sunday, January

8th

, approximately 25 students visited the docks at CWB and the

Historic Ships wharf to take photographs for their black and white

photography class at Shoreline Community College. The students

took many digital photos from which they will select several of their

favorites and then print, present and critique them this week in class.

2/8 Tugboat Event at the Historic Ships Wharf – 300+

participants: Puget Sound Maritime Historical Society

presented their monthly membership meeting in the

Armory with five historic tugboats moored on the

seawall and a presentation with Chuck Fowler and Tug

Captain Mark Freeman about Tugboats of Puget Sound.

Co-sponsors were Northwest Seaport and CWB. About

300 people attended. See the visiting vessels list above

2/13 NW Seaport Sea Chantey Sing – 8pm – Free, Open to the Public: Northwest Seaport

hosts Sea Chantey Sings on the second Friday of each month. This month’s Chantey sing

took place aboard the marvelously restored Historic Steamship the Virginia V and was lead

by song-leader Dan Roberts. Sea Chanteys are songs of the sea that are easy to sing and fun

to learn. Anyone can attend, and Sea Chantey Sings are free.

Ongoing- Native Canoe Carving- 25+ Participants- Free: The Center

for Wooden Boats’ Artist in Residence, Saaduuts, hosts open

carving every weekend and sporadically during the week. The 18th

through the 25th

of January saw over 25 community members per

day participate in Carving Cultural Connections with Saaduuts.

Every Wed, Sat & Sun- Dragon Boat Paddling- Open to the Public- First Three Times Free:

The oldest continuously practiced team sport in the world, dragon boating, trains on Lake

Union three days a week. The Tacoma Dragon Boat Association organizes the paddles that

launch from Lake Union Park weekly. The first three times are free, no experience is

necessary and all equipment is provided. Dragon Boating provides a continuous flow of

visitors who come to paddle or just watch and enjoy.
