Lake SimcoeConsidered by many to be the ice fishing capital of North America, Lake Simcoe provides thousands of visiting anglers from southern and central Ontario, the United States, and beyond a chance at some of the finest whitefish, lake trout, and jumbo yellow perch fishing found anywhere in Canada.

As they actively target these main species, anglers can also catch northern pike, walleye, black crappie, and bluegills.

Residents and visitors alike are often thrilled by the sight of thousands of cisco swimming just below the ice.

ICE FISHING G U I D E

Lake CouchichingLocated on the shores of Orillia and connected to Lake Simcoe by the historic Atherly Narrows, “Cooch” is a winter haven for anglers looking to fish the shallow lake for yellow perch and northern pike.

For those who like to walk out or have their own on-ice transportation and equipment, Cooch can provide a nice change of pace.

SafetyTourism Simcoe County encourages all ice anglers and others enjoying our lakes in winter to be extremely cautious. Prior to heading out call a local ice hut operator or tackle shop for the latest ice conditions.

It is important to note that those on foot require at least four inches of clear blue ice, while those on a snowmobile or ATV need a minimum of eight inches.

Stay clear of open water, pressure cracks and areas with current.
