1Artistic Director’s Welcome
Artists, Colleagues, Friends and Music Lovers…
Welcome all, to Festival 2016.
Our opening weekend concerts are in Kendal, the gateway to the Lakes. The Parish Church will resound with Elgar’s The Dream of Gerontius, marking the launch of the Cumbria
Festival Chorus. In St Thomas’s Church, the brilliant A4 Brass captures the romantics and modern with eloquence and spirit.
Follow the musical threads and links inspired by historic events, triumphs and tragedies. From the 18th century indulge in the genius and beauty of Mozart. From the 20th century WW1 is commemorated by composers haunted by the carnage. From the 21st century there are première performances, a special commission, opera at Fellinis, jazz at Zeffirellis and masterclasses at Brathay.
Happy return and collaboration: the Škampa Quartet reveals Kodály between Haydn and Beethoven and Dvorák between Mozart’s Horn Quintet and the Viola Quintet in C when they are joined by Alec Frank-Gemmill and world-renowned violist Roger Chase.
Three exotic débuts: the distinguished recorder player Tabea Debus with Duo Seraphim, counter-tenor and lute; Bartosz Głowacki, classical accordion virtuoso; the Silk and Bamboo Ensemble introduces ancient and more modern Chinese soundscapes.
Andrew Brownell’s fine recital opens with Mozart, features the overlooked Sterndale Bennett, and ends with perhaps the greatest of Schumann’s piano works, the Etudes Symphoniques. Renowned cellist Colin Carr returns after far too long a break with a programme to relish: solo Bach, sonatas of Beethoven and Brahms.
‘Music at Noon’ beckons: Japan’s acclaimed duo partnership Kazuki Sawa and Emiko Tadenuma play a charmed recital from Mozart to Stravinsky with Brahms and Debussy’s 1917 violin sonata.
Revealed: Breaking the Rules is music theatre… murder and repentance when the Marian Consort exposes the revered Italian renaissance composer Prince Carlo Gesualdo.
Mid-fest and the Manchester Piano Trio balances WW1 Ravel and Ireland with Mozart, Beethoven, and Dvorák. The National Opera Studio stars shine in duos, trios and quartets from Handel to Mozart, Verdi to Jonathan Dove.

The UK’s leading young violinist Chloë Hanslip and pianist Danny Driver include Bloch’s bold 1920 Sonata and Beethoven’s sublime Op.96 in their programme given in memory of LDSM’s former Chairman Keith Scott CBE.
Collaborations and highlights: Viola and cello duos from Beethoven to Lutosławski with Yuko Inoue and Christoph Richter. The brilliance of the Chilingirian Quartet in two programmes with rarely-heard Bainton, while Dvorák and Bartók offset a sextet special, Mozart’s Duo Concertante.
The first filmed war documentary ever and an LDSM commission: fusing sound and vision, gifted composer and percussionist Jan Bradley composes and performs the music for the epic The Battle of the Somme. Expect to be exhilarated and poignantly moved.
Our finale is the Candlelight Serenade when Academy soloists and chamber musicians invariably exceed expectations. Under the inspiring baton of Kazuki Sawa the full-strength ensemble will bring the curtain down on Festival & Academy with Schoenberg’s wondrous Verklärte Nacht, ‘Night Transfigured’.
We look forward to Festival 2016, meeting and enjoying it with you.

‘Go forth upon thy journey…’ – so an appropriate work as the opening concert of the festival, a joint celebration, as it is also the launch concert for the new Cumbria Festival Chorus, a merger of the Mary Wakefield Festival and Cumbria Choral Initiative. Composed in 1899–1900, Elgar’s Wagnerian masterpiece is simply “the greatest work of sacred music in the half century between the Verdi Requiem and Stravinsky’s Symphony of Psalms” (Michael Steinberg). Quoting Ruskin, Elgar closed his manuscript with ‘This is the best of me…’ – and so it is.

A4 Brass is comprised of principal players from some of the UK’s leading brass bands, including the world-famous Black Dyke, Grimethorpe Colliery, and Wingates bands. The quartet has a unique blend of instruments, with cornet, tenor horn, baritone and euphonium creating a distinctive sound that stands out from the standard brass quartet. This is a chamber ensemble to rival any other, carving out a niche with its own distinctive arrangements alongside repertoire it is commissioning.

“…The reputation of the Skampa Quartet drew a huge audience! Expectations were met with a truly superb concert.… There are insufficient superlatives in the English language to describe the sublime joy that is listening to the Škampa Quartet… A ‘glad to be alive’ evening of the highest order.” Audience members 2012
Two classical masterpieces bookend Kodály’s strikingly original WW1 quartet in the first of two concerts by the great Czech quartet (see also Friday).
With Mozart, his music rarely mirrors his personal circumstances at the time... Beethoven is not one such: the remarkable slow movement at the heart of Op.132 is headed ‘Hymn of thanksgiving from one who has recovered from an illness’, for which we must all be truly thankful.

Verdi Il trovatorefrom the Opéra de Paris
2.30pm Fellinis Cinema, Ambleside£16 ALLoCATeD SeATInG
duration 145’
Hui He (Leonora), Marcelo Álvarez (Manrico), Ekaterina Semenchuk (Azucena) and Ludovic Tézier (Il Conte di Luna) head the cast in this new production by Alex Ollé filmed live in February 2016.
Il trovatore is probably best known for its ‘gypsy’ music – the Anvil Chorus, Azucena’s ‘Stride la vampa’ and Manrico’s heroic ‘Di quella pira’. But Verdi wrote wonderful music for all four of his leads, with a host of thrilling ensembles and chorus numbers. The opera’s themes of jealousy, revenge and love play out against a hauntingly beautiful, wintry landscape that has been riven by war.
For more Verdi, see Thu 4th.

LDSM makes its first-ever visit to this attractive Victorian church, built in the Gothic Revival style.
Blurring the boundaries between a one-actor play and a concert, Breaking the Rules marks the 450th anniversary of Gesualdo’s birth by exploring his haunted world and his extraordinary music, including his monumental Tenebrae Responsories and a selection of his madrigals. These provide the sound-track to Gesualdo’s mind on the final night of his life, as he contemplates his own mortality and the tumultuous events which have led him to this moment, not least his murdering of his first wife and her lover…

“Rich, messy and human... Mariah Gale gives a performance of delicacy and force as Isabella... As the Duke, Dominic Rowan milks the comedy from the scenes where his character is disguised as a friar, but he also brings a moral intricacy to the role.” The Stage
One of Shakespeare’s blackest comedies, the play explores the problematic mechanisms of sexual politics and social justice in a Vienna in which “some rise by sin, and some by virtue fall”. In this story of secret identities and manipulation, the audience is invited to unravel the layers of intrigue skilfully crafted by a superb cast starring Mariah Gale as Isabella, Dominic Rowan as Duke Vincentio and Kurt Egyiawan as Angelo, and the directorial prowess of Dominic Dromgoole in his final production for the Globe Theatre. Filmed live in summer 2015, with music by Claire van Kampen.

Chloë Hanslip makes her eagerly-awaited LDSM début and brings the music of Bloch to the festival for the first time – the 1920 sonata was his personal response to the horrors of WW1. Here it rubs shoulders with Prokofiev’s work of the same year. Another first goes back 200 years to Bach, with the first true duo sonata.
This concert is dedicated to the memory of Keith Scott, who not only played a key part in the foundation of LDSM, and served as Chairman for many years, but also supported Chloë in the funding for her remarkable 1737 Guarneri del Gesu violin.

In the first of the Chilis two concerts (see also Fri 12th) we continue our ‘Mozart Quartets Plus’ strand (see also Fri 5th and Fri 12th) and bring another work from the glorious year of 1788 (see also the Mozart piano trios on Thu 4th and Sun 7th and the Divertimento on Mon 1st). The central work is a rarity unearthed by Levon Chilingirian: the British composer Edgar Bainton wrote his A major Quartet in 1919 following his wartime experiences in the Ruhleben internment camp, where his colleagues and compatriots included Benjamin Dale, featured in last year’s festival.
We dedicate this concert to the memory of Derrick Johnson, a long-time supporter of LDSM and a member of the Council of Management under Keith Scott.

Berlioz’s last major work is a rarely-performed sparkling gem, inspired by Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing; it receives its first-ever Glyndebourne staging as part of the national Shakespeare400 celebrations. One cannot summarise it better than in the first edition of Kobbé: ‘The gist of the comedy is the gradual reaction of the brilliant but captious Béatrice from pique and partially feigned indifference toward the witty and gallant Bénédict, to love. Both have tempers. In fact they reach an agreement to marry as a result of a spirited quarrel.’

Supported by Sir John Manduell CBE
This year, Imperial War Museums (IWM) and the First World War Centenary Partnership, of which LDSM is a member, are working together to show the UNESCO-listed film The Battle of the Somme (77’) to audiences across the world. Shot and screened in 1916, it was the first feature-length documentary about war and changed the way both cinema and film was perceived by the public. In the year of its release, around 20 million people (almost half the population of Britain at the time) watched The Battle of the Somme, many hoping to see the image of a loved-one or friend captured on film. One hundred years later, this unique film from IWM’s collection is being shown to commemorate the anniversary of the Battle of the Somme.
Exclusively for LDSM, the composer and percussionist Jan Bradley will improvise a soundtrack live for our screening. Last year Jan wrote a piece setting texts by three WW1 female poets for his percussion ensemble 4-MALITY and singer, which was so successful (the LDSM première was chosen as one of the new music highlights of the year by a leading critic) that Jan was a natural choice of artist to accompany this remarkable film.

The Maxwell Quartet was formed in 2010 at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, where its founding members met as postgraduate students. Since then its reputation has spread rapidly, from regular tours of Scotland to placement in the Park Lane Young Artists programme and the Tunnell Trust Awards Scheme, and most recently innovative collaborations between the Quartet and the Royal Ballet School and with the cinematographer Herman Kolgen.
The first of Mozart’s final set of three string quartets makes prominent use of the cello, doubtless in homage to its commissioner and dedicatee, the King of Prussia – himself an amateur cellist. The key of C minor is associated with drama and angst and just as in Brahms’ later piano trio (see Sun 7th) and his contemporaneous First Symphony, it is this key that drives the music forward in his first quartet.
Written on the island of Harris, in the Outer Hebrides, Sally Beamish’s Reed Stanzas was commissioned by the BBC for the 2011 Proms Chamber Music Series and was shortlisted for the RPS Music Award for Chamber-Scale Composition: it takes the form of variations on a Celtic-inspired theme.

Our ‘Mozart Quartets Plus’ strand concludes with a sextet arrangement of the great Sinfonia Concertante, with Levon Chilingirian and Susie Mészáros taking the solo parts. Dvorák rarities preface Bartók’s work – save for a brief period in Dvorák’s home land, Bartók was unable to continue his folk music collecting due to the war, and the Quartet’s slow gestation from 1915 to 1917 only intensified the composer’s drawing on past folk influences.
