There’s plenty to do on and around the lakes this month. The Rome Farmers’ Market is from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Friday

in the Alpine Village Business Park in Rome. Each week has a special feature, from guest chefs to the pet parade in July. Stop by and check it out.

The market will move to the Lake Arrowhead parking lot on July 15 to make way for the annual Taste of Rome, July 15 to 17. There will be plenty to eat, a Friday night car cruise and just a whole lot of fun.

Right in the middle of the Taste of Rome is the annual Lake Arrowhead Polish Fest. Good ole’ polish music from the Polish Connection and, of course, lots of food. Just $5 to get in — but don’t forget extra money to taste all that good food. Baseball fans can catch plenty of action in Wisconsin Rapids. With the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters, part of the Northwoods League, and the Wisconsin Rapids Legion Rangers and Ramblers, there

is a game almost every night at Witter Field.

New Lisbon will host its annual Wa Du Shuda days July 8 to 10 at Riverside Park, located at Highway 80 and Hog Island Road. The event includes live bands, lots of food, contests, flea market, car show and a parade. Find out more at www.newlisbon-chamber.com.

In addition to these special events, there’s the weekly shows from the Shermalot Water Ski Team. And, they’ll be compet-ing in Division 1, July 23, in the 45th annual Wisconsin State/Regional Water Ski Show Tournament at Lake Wazeecha in Wisconsin Rapids. Slather in the sunscreen and have some fun.

Also in this issue is another featured home. If you’ve got that lake home with something special, let us know!

Don’t let anyone tell you they are bored or there is nothing to do. Grab the camera, grab the beach bag, and grab this copy of Lake Country Snapshots. Don’t forget to share those photos with other readers. Just send them to [email protected].

Summer is short — don’t miss out on the fun!

Anyone who

has tried

to build a

new home

before will tell you that

it can be a stress-filled

process — full of deci-

sions, missed budgets

and missed deadlines.

However, if you

asked Pete and Cathy

Coppersmith how the

building process for

their new home in

Barnum Bay went, you

would hear a drasti-

cally different story.

The Coppersmiths built their

new home with Woodcraft Quality

Homes of Necedah, the exclusive

Wausau Homes builder for Adams

and Juneau counties. According to

the Coppersmiths, working with the

team at Woodcraft was a pleasure

throughout. It was equally as easy

for the Woodcraft team, as they

focused on the Wausau Homes ben-

efits of building on time, on budget

and a 3-dimensional visual of the

home before construction began.

The home the Coppersmiths

chose was the Timber Ridge; a

two-story, three bedrooms, 2-1/2

bath home from the Wausau Homes

Holiday Home Collection. From

room sizes to the finishing touches,

every Wausau Plan can be custom-

ized to fit the desires of the client.

The Coppersmiths added features

to the 2,500 square-foot home such

as geothermal heating and cooling,

maple cabinetry, electric air puri-

fication and a stamped and stained

concrete patio to name a few.

The home was completely cus-

tomized to their desires through the

use of the Wausau Homes 3D ren-

dering program which assists the

customer in visualizing their final

choices. The end result is stunning

— the large windows provide beau-

tiful views of the surrounding area

and the open concept is perfect for

entertaining and spending time

together.

Construction began June 10, 2010,

and was completed Oct. 15 — a total

of 127 days — just

as it was promised

by the Woodcraft

team.

Jim and Jean

Schmidt, owners of

Woodcraft Quality

Homes, have hun-

dreds of testimoni-

als from past cus-

tomers just like the

Coppersmiths, each

one of them refer-

encing how easy the process was

and how happy they are with the

craftsmanship.

Recently, Woodcraft and Wausau

Homes made extensive changes to

the way they help people through

the home buying process.

“When building a new home

stress can happen quickly and

it usually involves the budget,

completion dates and the end result

matching the dream,” said Jim

Schmidt. “We focus on these areas

to keep the stress out of the process

by promising a price that won’t go

over budget, a promised move in

date and the ability to customize

the home your way.”

That focus makes for happy cus-

tomers.

“When all was said and done our

home came in at budget and looks

fabulous,” Cathy Coppersmith said.

“The craftsmanship is awesome …

we couldn’t be happier.”

Submitted by Jean Schmidt of Woodcraft

Quality Homes in Necedah.

An inside look at Pete and Cathy Coppersmith’s new home in Rome. The couple’s new home in Barnum Bay was completed in October by Woodcraft Quality Homes of Necedah.

15th annual musky event a success

Finally, the stars aligned for our

15th annual Catch & Release

Petenwell Musky Challenge. We

had a full field of 80 boats with

160 contestants for this year’s tourna-

ment.

Friday night’s registration and rules

meeting started the weekend off. Once

again, The Ridges was our event head-

quarters. All teams verified paperwork

was complete and Pepsi Americas pro-

vided all contestants and judge boats with

refreshments. This year, we did a maga-

zine drive for our soldiers, and Black

River Bait Co. sponsored this drive.

Super Slayer Tackle Co. teamed up

with us and provided our seven kids with

two lures each. We have another prize

for the kids; these kids were competing

for a St. Croix Rod in memory of Jordan

Rowe. Jordan and his dad, Tom, had been

involved with the tournament in various

ways throughout the years. Jordan died in

September, and this rod is in memory of

him and will go to the kid who catches the

largest musky.

We handed out Friday’s “On the Water

Raffle” to a lucky team, compliments of

T-N-T Tackle and LMP Manufacturing

companies.

Again this year, I had the pleasure of

having Justine Hasz, our local fish biolo-

gist, with me. Justine was helping scan

and PIT tag all muskies we could get to.

In addition, we had two other DNR tech-

nicians with us PIT-tagging. All judges’

boats had the scanners needed to scan

each musky, checking for PIT tags. If a

judge boat found no tag, they’d call us to

come over and tag these fish.

Saturday morning started out with

cloudy skies and a hint of rain. The water

temperature was 53 degrees, and the

wind was light, out of the north-northeast.

Morning action was fast and furious.

Our back waters were full of fish. As we

staged in the Devil’s Elbow area, we wit-

nessed the first five fish caught. The first

three fish were caught right in front of us,

all within 20 minutes. Two more fish fol-

lowed — all within 40 minutes. The action

continued with reports of fish being

caught in the river and sloughs. As we

moved out to help cover the river, we wit-

nessed a couple more fish being caught.

As the day went on, we saw the size of

the muskies increase. Reports of some

fish being caught in the big water were

coming in.

We got to scan and tag a healthy 451⁄2-

inch musky up river. At the time, it was

our big fish for the day. However, the

action still was fast.

We caught up with Saturday’s “On the

Water Raffle” winners and presented

them with lures from T-N-T Tackle and

LPM Manufacturing companies.

A call came in to help register a big fish.

As we arrived, you could see the smile on

the face of each contestant. The fish filled

out the bump board. We all just marveled

at our new big fish

for the day. The fish

was caught just of the

main river — a beauti-

ful, fat 47-incher.

As day one was com-

ing to a close, we kept

getting reports of fish

being caught — 37 by

day’s end. Of those, 32

were tournament-legal

fish, meaning 34-inches

or greater.

Back at The Ridges,

we posted all 32 muskies

caught — two triples,

two doubles and sev-

eral teams with single

catches. And yes, lots of

stories of the ones that

got away.

We were presented with

a superb dinner, fit for

hungry anglers. After din-

Al Subera caught the big fish for Sunday. The musky mea-sured 41-1/4 inches.

ner, we acknowledged our

2011 sponsors. I presented

the big fish winner for day

one.

Our tournament stocking

fundraiser preceeded the

rest of the night.

Day two started with

completely different

weather conditions. Clear

blue skies, with a stron-

ger wind out of the north.

Water temps hovered

between 53 and 54 degrees.

Going into day two, we

had about four boats all

within striking distance of

each other.

Several morning fish

were undersize; however,

fish calls were coming in,

with several teams battling

for position, knowing one

good fish could separate

them from the pack. We

received a report of a team

catching its second fish of

the tournament in the main

flowage. Also, one of the

teams that caught three

the previous day caught its

fourth fish.

Like Saturday, all of our

judges’ boats were check-

ing muskies for PIT tags.

By mid-morning, we got

a report of a team dou-

bling, giving them three

fish for the tournament.

By the of end of day two,

we had received reports of

12 fish being caught, six of

which were tournament-

legal. Day two’s big fish

measured in at 41-1⁄4 inches.

Back at The Ridges, we

held our awards ceremony.

After the musky board was

updated, we had our five

winning teams. First, we

acknowledged our big fish

winners for day two.

Each day’s big fish win-

ners donated $100 each

back to stocking — a

good example of what our

contestants think of this

program.

Through the monetary

donation and raffles, we

raised $4,300. We will take

$1,000 and make a donation

to our local Department of

Natural Resources to help

fund musky research pro-

grams on our local waters.

A total of $3,300 goes to

purchase muskies for fall

stocking.

We also raised $1,205

for Operation Musky IV

com) and have more than

200 magazines to send out

to our soldiers.

Of the 49 muskies caught

and released during the

weekend, 38 were tourna-

ment-legal fish. What a

weekend.

To all our sponsors,

thank you from the bottom

of our hearts. Without you,

this tournament wouldn’t

be at the level it is. Thank

you again. To our contes-

tants, we’d like to thank

you, as well. Without your

participation, we wouldn’t

be able to do what we do.
