Divers May Snag a Research Grant

of Laguna Beach’s 84-person police department this past Sunday at the dedication of “Eternal Legacy,” a sculpture installation in memory of two police offi cers who died in the line of duty 60 years apart.

Constructed of glass and brass, materials both fragile and strong, the work is “intended to celebrate the accomplishments and the sacrifi ces” of the offi cers, Laguna Beach artist Michele Taylor told the crowd assembled near the police department’s public entrance on Loma Place.

She and another local artist, sculptor Gerard Stripling, scrambled to install the work by Sept. 21, marking the

fi rst anniversary of motor Offi cer Jon Coutchie’s death in a traffi c accident last year.

“Eternal Legacy” became the 52nd piece of public art commissioned by the city and came at the urging of the police employees association, which underwrote its cost with $100,000 in contributions, association president Larry Bammer said.

At the center of the brass structure that undulates like a fl ag unfurling is an orange resin sculpture to denote an eternal fl ame, and glass insets with the words “Honor,” “Courage,” “Duty” and “Remember,” all of which are internally illuminated. Many leaders of the most prestigious Laguna Beach nonprofi t organizations receive six fi gure salaries, nearly 25% more than the city’s mean job salary.

The top ranking nonprofi ts aggressively compete for personnel with businesses and government by offering top salaries and benefi t plans to key employees. The rankings include institutions that are non-operating charitable institutions, such as private family foundations.

Of the nearly 200 nonprofi t entities based in Laguna Beach, 34 organizations possess assets exceeding $1 million. Of those, eight paid their key employees more than $100,000, according to

an analysis of 2012 Internal Revenue Service tax fi lings, the most recent fi gures available.That compares with mean per capita income in town of $78,801 in 2012, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

The most generous employee package went to ASSE International Inc.’s chief fi nancial offi cer, Diane Mathuny. ASSE reported providing Mathuny $487,150 in salary and benefi ts, which Mathuny says includes a 401K plan, a pension plan, and medical benefi ts.

Thomas E. Willard reportedly receives $329,716 in salary and benefi ts from the Foundation for Affordable Housing. With Deborrah Willard’s $328,187 compensation package, the husband and wife team earned nearly $658,000.

Seven candidates vying for three seats on the Laguna Beach City Council together faced a public audience Monday during the first of several candidate forums planned prior to the Nov. 4 election.

While no candidate proved willing to become the standard bearer around a single paramount cause, several candidates said if elected they intend to focus on resolving long festering issues as their priorities, though some also expressed frustration at the current pace of governance.

In the first eight weeks of the school year, 12 Laguna Beach High School students have been diagnosed with concussions, as many as suffered the injury for the entire 2013-14 session, according to a report presented to the Laguna Beach school board Tuesday.

Football players accounted for 11 of those traumatic brain injuries (tbi) and one soccer player completed the dozen. Two more athletes, a soccer player and a volleyball player, suffered concussions while playing club sports, bringing the total to 14.

Irene White, director of special education and student services, and Mike Churchill, athletic director at Laguna Beach High School, presented the report on the school district’s concussion management guidelines. The protocols meet the legal requirements for reporting and diagnosing concussions that become effective on Jan. 1. A change to the state education code requiring concussion management was made law in 2011, a year after the NFL publicly acknowledged that many former players were suffering chronic traumatic encephalopathy, a form of dementia. “We’re getting a lot more direction,” said White.

School staff is becoming more aware of the signs and symptoms, Churchill explained, and are more likely to ask students demonstrating uncharacteristic behaviors about recent injuries.

with Aliso Niguel, Laguna Beach High School girls’ tennis team lost its regular season finale 71-72 in a tiebreaker based on total games played. “It showed them how important one game can be,” Coach Don Davis said, hoping the experience will motivate his girls as they head into post-season play.

Laguna compiled a 16-4 record this year, their best since going 17-4 in 2008. They also won their ninth straight Orange Coast League title. “This is by far my best team,” said Davis, now in his fourth season.

Laguna played a tough well-played game last Friday, Oct. 24, at Scott Field on the Estancia campus in Costa Mesa, nearly spoiling the 50th anniversary year celebration for the Eagles (6-2, 3-0). Breakers were tough on defense, holding the frustrated hosts to a field goal for three quarters of play and six possessions.

The game was Laguna’s best defensive effort of the season and it came against the league’s top team

Laguna started the contest with Jesse French recovering the kickoff after the Eagles were unable to hold on to Max Casper’s kick. From there Laguna could only move eight yards but were close enough for Casper (a freshman) to kick a 27-yard field goal, his first try for the year.

Breakers and the Eagles exchanged punts before Estancia put together a 12-play drive to the Laguna 18 but were forced to kick a tying field goal.

Still knotted at three at the half, Laguna took the second half kickoff and opened play with Bruce Knill running 39 yards to surprise the Eagles. Unfor-tunately, two Estancia defenders forced him out-of-bounds and the fall resulted in a collarbone injury that sidelined the key two-way player for the rest of the game.

The Breaker drive eventually stalled and Casper added a 41-yard field goal. Estancia’s possession was a quick three play and punt giving Laguna the ball again. Breakers held on to the pigskin for over six minutes and 42 yards but were unable to get closer than the Eagle 33 before Casper’s 50-yard field goal try fell short.

Estancia took over and seemed to re-energize marching 80-yards in seven plays to finally score early into the final period. Breakers came back but once again could not execute a play just out-side the red-zone turning the ball over on downs. Back came Estancia march-ing 68 yards in nine plays for their last points of the evening. Still Laguna did not give up as they drove 74 yards to the six-inch line but could not get the ball across on the drive. Brett Tracy had two great catches in the last push for 13 and 45 yards.

Boys Sand Volleyball (6-1)Breakers completed the regular season

with a complete 6.5 to 0 sweep of the Monarchs on Tuesday, Oct. 21 at the Grant Street courts. The league playoffs got underway this week with quarter-finals on Oct. 28-29, semifinals on Oct. 30, with the championship slated for Monday, Nov. 3. Breakers will have to get by Newport for a shot at the finals. The two programs have not played each other this season.

Cho’s Academy of Laguna Beach competed among 1,000 participants at the 22nd Annual KS Choi California Open Tae Kwon Do Championships in Carson on Oct. 18.

Cho’s team won five gold and two sil-ver medals. Three of the Cho team losses were extremely close matches, with one match going into double-overtime, another into standard overtime and one loss a likely result of accidental fouls.

The Cho’s Academy team undergoes

a rigorous training schedule and are encouraged to be humble in victory and to accept loss with dignity. All academy youth students are required to compete as part of their curriculum.

“I am incredibly proud of all my students for their work-ethic, follow-through and bravery,” said academy owner Jacob Cho, who established the business in 2009. He offers tae kwon do, Brazilian jiu jitsu, yoga and condition-ing fitness classes at the 1966 S. Coast Highway studio.

The Newport Beach Fire Depart-ment hosted the Fifth Annual Disaster Preparedness Expo on Saturday at the Newport Beach Central Library.

Attendance was a little lower than usual, said NBFD life safety specialist Matt Brisbois, but he was still pleased

with the turnout.There were a lot of locals there with

specifi c questions and concerns, he added.

“It was nice to have all that informa-tion right there, ready to be provided to them,” he said.

The Newport Beach Police Depart-ment is nearing the conclusion of specialized Motorcycle Safety Enforce-ment Operations in an effort to lower deaths and injuries.

These operations began in August and continue through the end of September. Extra offi cers are on duty patrolling areas frequented by motor-cyclists and where motorcycle crashes occur. Offi cers are looking for viola-tions made by drivers and riders alike that can lead to motorcycle crashes, including being under the infl uence of drugs or alcohol, speeding, making illegal turns, or any other dangerous violation.

Motorcycle fatalities saw a drop of 37 percent from 2008 to 2010, but fatalities rose nearly 18 percent in 2011. Operations like this are aimed at curbing rises in motorcycle deaths and sending the numbers back down.

In 2012, Newport Beach saw 37 motorcycle-involved collisions, which resulted in 39 injuries and no fatali-ties. So far in 2013, Newport Beach has seen 31 such collisions, resulting in 30 injuries and one fatality.

California collision data reveals that primary causes of motorcycle-involved crashes include speeding, unsafe turn-ing and impairment due to alcohol and other drugs.

The NBPD is also reminding all motorists to always be alert and watch out for motorcycles, especially when turning and changing lanes.

According to the NBPD, as the economy continues to improve, more drivers are on the road, including novice motorcycle riders who are untrained and unable to handle the power of today’s motorcycles.

The NBPD message to all drivers and motorcyclists is to share the road. Riders can obtain training through the California Motorcyclist Safety Program. Information is available at CA-msp.org or (877) RIDE411.

Race for the Cure Takes to the Streets of Newport this Sunday

Thousands of runners will be taking to the streets of Newport Beach this Sunday, September 22, for the 22nd annual Susan G. Komen Orange County Race for the Cure.

The event connects breast cancer ad-vocates, survivors, families and friends, in support of Komen’s mission to serve people and save lives.

“Each year, the Race is the one inspi-

rational community event that honors those whose lives have been touched by breast cancer,” said Marie Cammack, 2013 Race for the Cure chair. “Every $125 raised above the registration fee can pay for a mammogram for a woman in need.”

Southern California Edison’s “routine” replacement of two utility poles in Bluebird Canyon was anything but routine for the residents of 50 nearby homes. They received mandatory evacuation orders prior to Wednesday’s extraction by helicopter of two utility poles located behind properties on Wykoff Way.

Despite the mandatory evacuation notice, Bluebird Canyon Drive resident Lori Solomon said she was caught off guard because she assumed that Wednesday morning’s intermittently gusty winds might keep the copter grounded. So when a

worker knocked on her door to give her a 15-minute warning at around 10:30 a.m., she had to scramble to get out the door in time.

Solomon received written notice a couple of weeks before and SCE representatives went door to door last week to make sure residents understood they would need to temporarily evacuate their homes between 9 and 11 a.m.

Twenty years ago this month, a savage fi re devoured 14,000 acres of Laguna Canyon wilderness and

ravaged multiple neighborhoods.

The fi re that destroyed 391 homes and threatened more than 1,000 others at the time

was believed to be the work of an arsonist, but the perpetrator were never found. Investigators collected evidence statements, received 480 arson leads and ruled out non-human causes, but investigators were never able to determine who started the fi re.

“That’s the frustrating part of our business; often the fi re destroys evidence,” said Scott Brown, division chief of the Orange County Fire Authority, which investigated the blaze because it ignited fi rst in county territory.

On that fateful day, Brown was a fi re captain and one of the fi rst arriving engine companies, No. 222, on the scene in Laguna Canyon.

Investigative reports on the Laguna fi re of 20-years-ago were purged, according to Brown, as records are required to be kept for only seven years.

Q: What makes a successful kitchen?

A: The design is very important and getting a seasoned pro really helps to put experience and understanding into making a useful, functional kitchen in your home. For instance many times the main focus is on cabinetry and countertops. But what about spacing? Keeping proper clearances is important, such as distance from island to counter for ease of cooking. Or island to wall where seating might inhibit people from walking behind. The basic

kitchen triangle is always a good place to start.,

Q: Explain the kitchen triangle.A: It’s taking the kitchen workspace

and its three most important points: storage, prepping/cleaning and cooking. From here you want to make the kitchen flow. One leg of the triangle shouldn’t be too long where it takes many steps to go to another point. Then again, you don’t want it too short where it becomes too cramped to move. Moving efficiently and comfortably is the goal.

Q: Name a common challenge that comes up.

A: Everybody wants an island in the kitchen. Many times these wonderful work spaces can interfere with one leg of that work triangle and pose spacing problems. Placing an island can cut the refrigerator off where you’d have to walk around. These days these challenges are met

by the incredible appliances that are available. You can keep the big refrigerator on the other side, but have another smaller refrigerator below the island hidden behind a cabinet to keep the triangle in flow.

Q: How do appliances factor into a pretty design?

A: I love to cook. And because of that I know what every kitchen gadget, accessory and appliance needs to keep it functioning. So when a customer wants to improve their kitchen or make a new one, I always start with a list of appliances. Because if you are a home pro cook or prefer takeout, this all factors into designing the perfect kitchen for you. For someone who loves to cook and doesn’t mind all the cleanup, we’ll look into big gourmet gas burners. But for the non-cooks a glass induction stove probably would work best. CONTINUED ON PAGE 2

Upon arriving at Ivory Restaurant & Lounge, which is comfortably situated between the Sawdust Art Festival grounds and seven-degrees, the first thought to cross one’s mind is undoubtedly, “Oh my goodness gracious, there’s parking!” However, the convenience of finding a free spot to dock your vehicle is merely the first of many pleasant sur-prises that await those who visit Ivory.

Crossing the threshold into the establishment, one is imme-diately greeted with a sense of calm sophistication. White drapes and a marble bar top contrast beautifully with the dark wood furniture, the design scheme reflecting the elegantly mod-ern taste of owner Marsha Benson. Hand-picking everything from the serene background music to the artwork on the walls, Marsha has created an escape that offers delicious food to boot.

Prior to its grand opening in May, the restaurant staff was able to hold a soft opening weekend, which, according to Marsha, allowed them to collect valuable opinions from guests and make strategic adjustments. The result is a brand-new res-taurant that already has a strong handle on its recipes and gor-geous presentation of all its dishes.

To start off the meal, the Boom Boom Shrimp is a must-try appetizer. Lightly breaded and tossed in a sweet Thai chili glaze, the shrimp are delightfully crispy and surpris-ingly light. Or, for those who would prefer a more veggie-filled starter, the goat cheese and beet salad is refreshing and

perfect for scorching summer days. Beautifully plated, thick-cut slices of roasted red and yellow beets are accompanied by a spring mix of greens and topped with creamy goat cheese and chive oil. Flavorful and satisfying, it’s easy to see why this is one of the eatery’s most popular salads.

Other starters include a lobster and shrimp macaroni and cheese, crabcakes and prosciutto-topped bruschetta. And although it would be easy to fill up on Ivory’s delectable appe-tizer selections, its entrees are absolutely worth saving room for.

The filet mignon portobello, for example, is served with gar-lic mashed potatoes and topped with sliced portobello mush-rooms and a bearnaise sauce, packing tons of flavor. Another incredible entree is the braised short ribs. Tender rib meat is simmered until it is melt-in-your-mouth juicy, and then served up with savory white truffle risotto and seasonal veggies.

In addition, any seafood lover will be thrilled with the Chilean sea bass, which arrives smothered in a creamy lobster sauce and alongside fresh asparagus. Deliciously blackened on the outside, but still fresh and flaky, this dish exemplifies Abel’s talent in the kitchen.

To cap the meal, Abel offers an ever-changing selection of homemade desserts that vary based on seasonal ingredients and what inspires the chef. It is this dedication to fresh ingredients, the beautiful presentations and, above all, the delicious menu that point toward a very successful future for Ivory. LBM

in Newport Beach this week, prompting demonstrations outside the civic center, both in support and protest of specifi c is-sues.

About two dozen protesters, many dressed in gas masks and hazmat suits, waved signs and chanted against hydraulic fracturing Wednesday morning on the corner of Avo-cado Avenue and Civic Center Drive. The group was directly in front of the Newport Beach Civic Center and City Hall, where just inside the CCC was meeting.

The Center for Biological Diversity organized the demonstration, which also in-volved several other environmental groups, and sent a letter to commissioners urging them to “press the federal government for greater oversight of fracking in federal waters off California’s coast,” according to a press release.

The protesters also wanted commission-ers to demand “consistency review” of frack-ing in federal waters, the statement reads.

Andrea Weber, a paralegal for the Center for Biological Diversity, leads protesters Wednesday outside the Newport Beach City Hall while the California Coastal Commission met inside council chambers. The organization was protesting offshore fracking. Protesters wore gas masks and hazmat suits.

A tutor was charged on Monday with crimes related to illegally changing grades of students at Corona del Mar High School during the 2012 to 2013 school year.

According to a joint press release from the Newport Beach Police Depart-ment and the Orange County District Attorney, Timothy Lance Lai, 29, is charged with one felony count of second degree commercial burglary and four felony counts of computer access and fraud. If convicted, he faces a maximum sentence of five years and eight months in jail.

He is free on $200,000 bail. His ar-raignment has been rescheduled for Nov. 4.

According to the press release, at the time of the crimes, Lai was a private tutor for students who attended Corona del Mar High School. In 2013, Lai is accused of breaking into the school and inserting a USB device into a teacher’s computer that was able to record the teacher’s keystrokes.

Between April 1, 2013, and June 14, 2013, Lai is accused of accessing the school’s network using the information from recorded keystrokes and changing the grades of three students from two different teachers.

On June 14, 2013, one of the teach-ers discovered that grades for students had been changed and contacted school administrators. The school administra-tors contacted Newport Beach Police Department, who investigated this case.

In December 2013, during the investi-gation, another USB device was discov-ered on a third teacher’s computer.

Shortly after the investigation began, the defendant is accused of fleeing the country. NBPD arrested the defendant on Oct. 6 when he arrived at Los Ange-les International Airport.

The investigation by NBPD is on-going. Senior Deputy District Attorney Brock Zimmon of the Special Prosecu-tions Unit is prosecuting this case.

Islands, you can’t miss the 25 small blue and white signs that suddenly appeared last month atop the decades-old seawalls.

The signs show two proposed wall cap heights to help defend the man-made islands against rising seas.

A 2012 study by United States Geological Survey projected that sea levels along the California coast will rise as much as one foot

in just 20 years, two feet by 2050, and fi ve and a half feet by 2100.

Both climate change and a sinking of the landmass of much of California will dictate the Golden State’s new reality.

In 2010, after a three-year-long study on sea level rise, the city concluded that Big and Little Balboa Islands would need protection from a rising Pacifi c.

District prepares to raise rates over the next five years to pay for the escalating cost of supplying local customers with 1.5 billion gallons of imported water annually, local resident Michael Beanan sees a solution in what he describes as a “goldmine”: 4 billion gallons of treated sewage that spews into the Pacific Ocean from an outfall pipe off Laguna’s coast each year.

Unlike the alchemists who never succeeded in turning base metals into gold, modern scientists have transformed wastewater into drinking water, which might as well be liquid gold given its increasing scarcity in drought-stricken California.

But that transformation is extremely costly and so far seems to be an undertaking of only huge water districts.

Currently seven projects in the state are permitted to perform this modern-day miracle of expanding groundwater supplies with water purified by state-of-the art treatment plants, including Orange County Water District, which supplies water to 20 northern and central Orange County cities and water agencies. The city of San Diego has also recently completed a demonstration water purification project that, if eventually approved full-scale, would be the first in the state permitted to supplement a surface water supply, the San Vincente Reservoir, with treated water.

Embattled Laguna Beach City Council candidate Jon Madison, whose academic and professional claims cannot be independently verified, this week went on the offensive and produced one of two college diplomas that he says demonstrate the veracity of his resume.

Even so, the authenticity of the document Madison produced only raised more skepticism. The Cornell University diploma purporting to grant Jon Jay Joseph V. Madison a Ph.D. in horticulture on May 26, 1979, does not appear to bear the signature of Frank H.T. Rhodes, who was Cornell’s president in that year, nor that of David L. Call, who was dean of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences in 1979.

Graduation that year actually occurred on May 28, according to the May 23, 1979, edition of the Cornell Daily Sun, Ithaca’s daily newspaper.

And in 1979 the university discipline was known as the Department of Vegetable Crops, a precursor to the Department of Horticulture, according to citations in the 1979 scientific journal Horticultural Reviews and the university publication Cornell Chronicle and website Cornell Plantations.

Cornell’s registrar has no record of Jon Jay Joseph Madison attending the university, Cornell spokesman Joe Schwartz confirmed again Tuesday, Sept. 30, reiterating a similar query made by the Indy on Sept. 8 of a slightly different name, Jon Jay Madison.

In the statement released to supporters this week, Madison conceded he did not take the California State Bar exam and thus cannot properly describe himself as a lawyer, a claim he made in a sworn 2012 application for appointment

Embedded in the nursery tale about the three little pigs is a truism that informs structural home design. One made of straw, the other of wood and the third made of bricks. Whereas the brick withstood the forces of the windy wolf, the others came crashing down. Yet in an earthquake zone, toppling brick from a rigid structural design proves more predatory than the wolf at the door. It’s Matt Brown’s job as president and chief engineer at Newport Structural Design to keep structural integrity in an architect’s design.

Q: This is not a career one hears of too often. How did you start in it?

A: Well, like the ol’ cliché, I played with a lot of Legos in my childhood. Since grade school I planned on being an architect, chose all the elected classes in college and some semesters before I graduated I realized I might have it wrong. I wanted to design the structure of buildings and learned architects work on the aesthetics of the building. Structural

engineers make it stand. So I added courses and received a bachelor of arts in civil engineering as well as in architecture and continued on with a master’s, emphasis in structural design.

Q: Structural engineers are sort of the unsung heroes of incredible structures.

A: I bet most people would not recognize the names of those who built the incredible buildings around the world, except maybe one, Gustave Eiffel whose name marks the tower he designed. No, we don’t get much recognition. We are in the background making structural integrity a sure thing. Roller coasters wouldn’t stay up if it wasn’t for us and what fun would that be?

Q: You and gravity are friends then, right?A: Gravity is an adversary that brings out the

best in structural engineers. With buildings most foundations are designed to withstand gravity’s force pushing downward and the structural load must

As Aristotle once wrote, “The aim of art is to represent not the outward appearance of things, but their inward significance.” In the modern era, artists continue to depict their views in enchanting paintings, heroic sculptures and other mediums. Wendy Posner’s world revolves around integrating the work of emerging and established artists into the environments of corporations and private residences.

Q: Posner Fine Art had small beginnings yet now operates worldwide. What’s the story?

A: My mom founded the business 50 years ago. She was an army wife, traveling to many different army bases all over the world. When they finally moved back to Milwaukee, she established a top-notch fine art collection in her basement. As business grew, she bought a small house and converted it into a gallery. And when she visited some clients in SoHo, New York, she fell in love

with the whole scene and brought an idea back with her.

Q: Which was?A: To bring the SoHo to her town! She loved the

fact that business and apartments sprung out of old factories. So she came home and ended up buying an old knitting factory, 14,000 square feet, and filled it with 18 full time employees. The gallery was on the first and second floors. The third and fourth floors she converted into condos. And the fifth floor she and my dad lived in.

Q: So how did you get involved?A: Actually, by the time she had converted the

factory I was already in college studying at Boston University. I started out in the fine arts division then transferred to the communications department in advertising and public relations. I always said I would never get into my mother’s business. I Wendy Posner

Q: How’s it going, being you’re the newbie in town and almost ready to open?

A: Gosh it’s been a whirlwind. We’ve been here for 10 weeks and super focused setting up our studio. But at the same time we’ve been having a total blast. It’s good to be back after 20 years. I grew up in Orange County, left here for a suburb of DC, a quaint coastal town similar to Balboa but on a smaller scale. Set up a

successful design studio there, but now back and revved to make the OC scene.

Q: What does SKD stand for?A: Swanzie Kitchen Design. The first and

foremost room I love to design is the kitchen, my specialty. But we are a full service interior design studio as well. Which is a great big plus in my industry.

Q: How so?A: I have the know-how to actually design

PRE-PRESS GUIDELINES: Laguna Beach Independent is a Macintosh-format Computer-to-Plate (CTP) environment, and Adobe InDesign are the primary page layout programs. Print-ready PDF and InDesign documents are the preferred material formats. All files will pass through a preflight operation to confirm that all elements are present and correct. If there are problems, we will contact you and work to resolve them (with applicable charges). To minimize problems, please read and follow the guidelines below.

DIGITAL FILE REQUIREMENTS: We accept the following digital file formats: PDF, TIFF, or JPEG images. High-resolution files of at least 180 dpi are required. Please package or collect all support files including fonts. Convert all PMS spot colors used in any application to CMYK.

IMAGES: All images must be submitted (grayscale or CMYK) as native Photoshop psd, EPS, JPEG, or TIFF at 180 dpi. Images supplied at lower resolution will result in an inferior print quality that will not be the publisher’s responsibility. Any images supplied as RGB, index, lab or containing color profiles will be converted to CMYK, which may result in an undesirable color shift. We cannot be responsible for files supplied in formats other than CMYK. Scaling, rotating or other image manipulation must be done prior to placement in the page layout program.

PDF FILES: Print ready PDF files are acceptable only if they meet size, color and resolution requirements as detailed in the Images section above.

DELIVERY INFORMATION: Submitting your ads can be done in any one of three following ways:

The Newport Beach Fire Depart-ment hosted the Fifth Annual Disaster Preparedness Expo on Saturday at the Newport Beach Central Library.

Attendance was a little lower than usual, said NBFD life safety specialist Matt Brisbois, but he was still pleased

with the turnout.There were a lot of locals there with

specifi c questions and concerns, he added.

“It was nice to have all that informa-tion right there, ready to be provided to them,” he said.

The Newport Beach Police Depart-ment is nearing the conclusion of specialized Motorcycle Safety Enforce-ment Operations in an effort to lower deaths and injuries.

These operations began in August and continue through the end of September. Extra offi cers are on duty patrolling areas frequented by motor-cyclists and where motorcycle crashes occur. Offi cers are looking for viola-tions made by drivers and riders alike that can lead to motorcycle crashes, including being under the infl uence of drugs or alcohol, speeding, making illegal turns, or any other dangerous violation.

Motorcycle fatalities saw a drop of 37 percent from 2008 to 2010, but fatalities rose nearly 18 percent in 2011. Operations like this are aimed at curbing rises in motorcycle deaths and sending the numbers back down.

In 2012, Newport Beach saw 37 motorcycle-involved collisions, which resulted in 39 injuries and no fatali-ties. So far in 2013, Newport Beach has seen 31 such collisions, resulting in 30 injuries and one fatality.

California collision data reveals that primary causes of motorcycle-involved crashes include speeding, unsafe turn-ing and impairment due to alcohol and other drugs.

The NBPD is also reminding all motorists to always be alert and watch out for motorcycles, especially when turning and changing lanes.

According to the NBPD, as the economy continues to improve, more drivers are on the road, including novice motorcycle riders who are untrained and unable to handle the power of today’s motorcycles.

The NBPD message to all drivers and motorcyclists is to share the road. Riders can obtain training through the California Motorcyclist Safety Program. Information is available at CA-msp.org or (877) RIDE411.

Race for the Cure Takes to the Streets of Newport this Sunday

Thousands of runners will be taking to the streets of Newport Beach this Sunday, September 22, for the 22nd annual Susan G. Komen Orange County Race for the Cure.

The event connects breast cancer ad-vocates, survivors, families and friends, in support of Komen’s mission to serve people and save lives.

“Each year, the Race is the one inspi-

rational community event that honors those whose lives have been touched by breast cancer,” said Marie Cammack, 2013 Race for the Cure chair. “Every $125 raised above the registration fee can pay for a mammogram for a woman in need.”

Southern California Edison’s “routine” replacement of two utility poles in Bluebird Canyon was anything but routine for the residents of 50 nearby homes. They received mandatory evacuation orders prior to Wednesday’s extraction by helicopter of two utility poles located behind properties on Wykoff Way.

Despite the mandatory evacuation notice, Bluebird Canyon Drive resident Lori Solomon said she was caught off guard because she assumed that Wednesday morning’s intermittently gusty winds might keep the copter grounded. So when a

worker knocked on her door to give her a 15-minute warning at around 10:30 a.m., she had to scramble to get out the door in time.

Solomon received written notice a couple of weeks before and SCE representatives went door to door last week to make sure residents understood they would need to temporarily evacuate their homes between 9 and 11 a.m.

Twenty years ago this month, a savage fi re devoured 14,000 acres of Laguna Canyon wilderness and

ravaged multiple neighborhoods.

The fi re that destroyed 391 homes and threatened more than 1,000 others at the time

was believed to be the work of an arsonist, but the perpetrator were never found. Investigators collected evidence statements, received 480 arson leads and ruled out non-human causes, but investigators were never able to determine who started the fi re.

“That’s the frustrating part of our business; often the fi re destroys evidence,” said Scott Brown, division chief of the Orange County Fire Authority, which investigated the blaze because it ignited fi rst in county territory.

On that fateful day, Brown was a fi re captain and one of the fi rst arriving engine companies, No. 222, on the scene in Laguna Canyon.

Investigative reports on the Laguna fi re of 20-years-ago were purged, according to Brown, as records are required to be kept for only seven years.

Q: What makes a successful kitchen?

A: The design is very important and getting a seasoned pro really helps to put experience and understanding into making a useful, functional kitchen in your home. For instance many times the main focus is on cabinetry and countertops. But what about spacing? Keeping proper clearances is important, such as distance from island to counter for ease of cooking. Or island to wall where seating might inhibit people from walking behind. The basic

kitchen triangle is always a good place to start.,

Q: Explain the kitchen triangle.A: It’s taking the kitchen workspace

and its three most important points: storage, prepping/cleaning and cooking. From here you want to make the kitchen flow. One leg of the triangle shouldn’t be too long where it takes many steps to go to another point. Then again, you don’t want it too short where it becomes too cramped to move. Moving efficiently and comfortably is the goal.

Q: Name a common challenge that comes up.

A: Everybody wants an island in the kitchen. Many times these wonderful work spaces can interfere with one leg of that work triangle and pose spacing problems. Placing an island can cut the refrigerator off where you’d have to walk around. These days these challenges are met

by the incredible appliances that are available. You can keep the big refrigerator on the other side, but have another smaller refrigerator below the island hidden behind a cabinet to keep the triangle in flow.

Q: How do appliances factor into a pretty design?

A: I love to cook. And because of that I know what every kitchen gadget, accessory and appliance needs to keep it functioning. So when a customer wants to improve their kitchen or make a new one, I always start with a list of appliances. Because if you are a home pro cook or prefer takeout, this all factors into designing the perfect kitchen for you. For someone who loves to cook and doesn’t mind all the cleanup, we’ll look into big gourmet gas burners. But for the non-cooks a glass induction stove probably would work best. CONTINUED ON PAGE 2
