TIDBITS Pepperdine returns 10 letterwinners

from a year ago, including all five starters. Last season the Waves compiled an 18-12 record and advanced to the WNIT. They are lead by preseason All-WCC and 2011 Defen-sive Player of the Year Jazmine Jackson.

PU returns 87.8% of their scoring as a team, and 82.6% when it comes to rebound-ing from last year

The Waves enter the UT contest looking to build off the momentum of their 78-54 exhibition win against Westmont.

Pepperdine is the 186th all-time oppo-nent to face the Lady Vols.

Pepperdine opens their season as the 10th all-time team from California to face the Lady Vols joining Fullerton State, Long Beach State, San Francisco, San Jose State, Santa Clara, Southern Cal, St. Mary’s,Stanford and UCLA.

This is the first meeting between Tennes-see and Pepperdine but UT is no stranger to foes from California, boasting a 56-10 record against teams from the Golden State.

Look for Pepperdine to play their sig-nature defense-minded game. In 2010-11, Pepperdine ranked fourth nationally with 12.8 steals per game and the team’s turn-over margin mark of +8.00 ranked an im-pressive second-best in the NCAA.

THE 4-1-1 ON PEPPERDINE In the last outing for Pepperdine be-fore kicking off the season against Ten-nessee, the Waves opened up the 2011-12 campaign with an exhibition victory over Westmont, 78-54, at Firestone Fieldhouse on Oct. 25 in Malibu. Calif. The Waves were led by seniors Lauren Bell and Jazmine Jack-son as they each netted 18 points, while fellow senior Skye Barnett led the way with 13 rebounds. PU got out to a fast start with an 11-4 score less than five minutes into the game thanks to eight quick points by Bell. The Waves extended the margin to a double-digit lead throughout the first half and led by 22 points at the half, 44-22. In the opening stanza, Bell scored all 18 of her points, including four-of-six shooting from behind the arc. Jackson was the second half catalyst with 11 points. The Waves’ signa-ture pressure defense forced five turnovers in five minutes of play late in the second half as their lead increased to 26 at 71-45. Pepperdine generated 23 turnovers in the game and cashed in on 27 points.

TENNESSEE VS. PEPPERDINE NOV. 13, 2011

STREAKING INTO 2011-12The Lady Vols carry a 36-game home court winning streak into the game against Pepperdine. It is the fourth longest in Lady Vol history. Tennessee’s best home court winning streak was 69 consecutive games from Feb. 2, 1991 to Jan. 6, 1996.

ELITE COMPANYMight a true rookie get a starting nod today? When Coach Pat Summitt started fresh-man Taber Spani against Baylor in the open-ing game of the 2009-10 season, it marked only the 13th time in her coaching career that a freshman started her very first game at Tennessee. The list of opening day rookie starters: Taber Spani, 2009, Glory Johnson and Shek-inna Stricklen, 2008, Angie Bjorklund, 2007, Candace Parker, 2005, Shyra Ely 2001, Ashley Robinson 2000, Gwen Jackson 1999, Kyra Elzy 1996, Chamique Holdsclaw 1995, Tiffani Johnson 1994, Bridgette Gordon and Sheila Frost 1985.

THE NODLast season, Meighan Simmons, a 5-9 point guard from Cibolo, Texas, became the 60th rookie all-time to earn a starting assign-ment at Tennessee. The previous year, rookie Kamiko Wil-liams (59th all-time) started against Arkan-sas while her classmate and fellow rookie Taber Spani, became the 13th frosh to start her very first game at UT and the 58th rookie overall. In 2008-09, a record number of players – FIVE – were called on to start for the Lady Vols as rookies: Shekinna Stricklen (starter number 53), Glory Johnson (number 54), Bri-ana Bass (55), Alicia Manning (56) and Kelley Cain (57) all earned starting assignments. Angie Bjorklund became the 52nd all-time Lady Vol to start during her freshman season –she started in 30 of 38 games. Previously, Cait McMahan earned a start at point guard versus Louisiana Tech during her freshman season. Prior to Cait’s starting nod, then-redshirt freshman Candace Parker played and start-ed in all 36 games her rookie season in 2005-06. A season earlier, Tennessee coach Pat Summitt liked what she saw out of the 2004-05 rookie class as two players earned start-ing nods during the season. Nicky Anosike played in all 35 games with 25 starting as-signments and Alexis Hornbuckle played in all 35 games with 21 starts. This duo became the 48th and 49th rookies all-time to earn starting assignments at UT as rookies.

GLORY -- MAYBE THIS SEASON?It’s a fact that Tennessee has produced some of the greatest players ever in women’s collegiate basketball. It’s a little known fact that there has only been one double-figure rebounder in the history of the program -- Olympian and Ko-dak All-American Patricia Roberts. Roberts hauled in 14.2 rpg (467 total) in her only season as a Lady Vol in 1976-77. She also claimed scoring honors with 29.9 ppg (987 points) in her single season on The Hill.

In 2006-07, Candace Parker came the closest to a double-figure rebounding aver-age but had to settle for 9.8 rpg. Last season, Glory Johnson flirted with the elusive double-digit and managed 9.7 rpg.

SHEKINNA HAS IT GOING ONLady Vol senior Shekinna Stricklen has the nation’s longest starting streak entering the 2011-12 season. Stricklen has started 104 consecutive games and is joined in the elite club by a pair of players on upcoming UT opponent rosters. DePaul senior forward Keisha Hampton has started 102 consecutive games while Mi-ami’s (Fla.) Shenise Johnson has been in the starting five for 99 consecutive games.Miami travels to Knoxville for the State Farm TipOff on Tues., Nov. 15. UT and DePaul meet in Madison Square Garden on Dec. 11 in the Maggie Dixon Classic.

JOHNSON COULD BE THE FOURTHUT senior Glory Johnson needs just 137 rebounds to pass the 1,000 rebound pla-teau. Only three other Lady Vols have man-aged to grab 1,000 rebounds -- Chamique Holdsclaw (1,295), Sheila Frost (1,038) and Tamika Catchings (1,004). Six other UT play-ers snagged over 900 career rebounds.

PRIDE IN BOARD PLAYCoach Pat Summitt’s mantra of defense and boards has been a staple of her nearly four decades of coaching. In two 2011-12 preseason exhibitions contests, the Lady Vols outrebounded the opposition 52.0 rpg to 26.5 rpg. Last season, in 37 games, Tennessee was outrebounded only twice -- by Georgia Tech, 37-36 and vs. Kentucky in the SEC Tourna-ment finals, 46-41. Overall, the Lady Vols held a +12.4 re-bounding advantage, 46.3 to 33.9, in 2010-11.

LADY VOL STREAKSThe Lady Vols last loss at home was against Duke, 62-54, on Feb. 16, 2009, since then UT has won 36 home games. The last time UT lost on the road was on Dec. 14, 2010 at Baylor. Since then, UT has won eight road games. The last time the Lady Vols lost on a neu-

tral court was against Notre Dame, 73-59, in the 2011 NCAA Elite 8 game on Mar. 28, 2011. Since that time, UT has not played on a neutral court.

STRICKLEN SELECTED AS AN AP A-ALady Vol senior guard Shekinna Strick-len was selected as a First Team Associated Press Preseason All-American. Also joining Stricklen on the five player team were Baylor’s Brittney Griner, Notre Dame’s Skylar Diggins, Stanford’s Nnem-kadi Ogwumike and Miami’s Shenise John-son. Tennessee and Stricklen will face each of those teams this season.

JOHNSON NAMED AS A LOWE’S NOMINEETennessee senior forward Glory John-son has been named one of 30 women’s basketball nominees for the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award, presented to student-athletes who excel on and off the field. Johnson is one of three nominees from the SEC. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Divi-sion I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence -community, classroom, character and competition. The CLASS award is an acronym for Celebrat-ing Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School and focuses on the total student-athlete. “Glory is an ideal candidate for the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award,” Head Coach Pat Summitt said, “blending the perfect balance of excellence in the classroom, on the court and in the community. She is our first play-er ever to graduate in three years and that shows her dedication and discipline toward her academics.”Johnson captured All-SEC First Team honors in 2010-11 and was a finalist for the 2011 State Farm All-America Team. A Master of Science in Communication candidate, Johnson completed her under-graduate degree in Interdisciplinary Pro-grams with a Concentration in Global Stud-ies and a Specialization in Global Politics and Economy in only three years.

HEY! WE LOVE A HAPPY MEALThe Tennessee Lady Vols must lead the nation with the number of McDonald’s High School All-Americans on their roster in 2011-12 with eight players. Tennessee’s McDonald’s All-Americans: Vicki Baugh, Glory Johnson, Alicia Manning, Meighan Simmons, Shekinna Stricklen, Taber Spani, Cierra Burdick and Ariel Mas-sengale.

TOUGHEST PLACE TO PLAYThe University of Tennessee’s Thomp-son-Boling Arena is still the toughest wom-en’s basketball arena in the nation to secure a win. Heading into the 2011-12 season, the Lady Vols have fashioned a 341-20 all-time record on “The Summitt” for a 94.45 winning percentage since the doors were opened in 1987.

WELCOME TO “THE SUMMITT”The playing court in the Thompson-Boling Arena on the University of Tennessee campus donned a new look for the 2005-06 season.

After Lady Vol coach Pat Summitt passed Dean Smith for most NCAA collegiate bas-ketball wins of all-time with a 75-54 win over Purdue on Mar. 22, 2005, UT named the TBA court, “The Summitt.” The floor had a complete overhaul with permanent logos of both the Lady Vols and Vols painted directly in front of the scorer’s table; the free throw lanes were painted orange with “SEC” reversed out; the giant jump circle/mid-court TENNESSEE was giv-en a new brighter color scheme, and “The Summitt,” Coach Summitt’s actual signa-ture adorns the sidelines opposite the team benches.

300 WINS IN TBATennessee recorded its 300th win in Thompson-Boling Arena when the Lady Vols defeated the Stanford Cardinal, 79-69 OT on Dec. 21, 2008. Seven years earlier, UT grabbed its 200th TBA win over the University of Southern Cal-ifornia on Nov. 18, 2001, 106-66. UT has now amassed a 341-20 (.942) record since the Orange and White moved into the Thompson-Boling Arena to start the 1987-88 season 24-years ago. Along the way, the Lady Vols have pro-duced 10 flawless home records in 1988-89(15-0), 1991-92 (14-0), 1992-93 (13-0), 1993-94 (15-0), 1994-95 (15-0), 1997-98 (16-0), 1998-99 (14-0), 2000-01 (15-0), 2002-03 (16-0), 2009-10 (17-0) and 2010-11 (17-0). UT also registered a former NCAA record 69-game home court-winning streak from Feb. 1, 1991 thru Jan. 2, 1996.

JUST 20 TBA LOSSESThe Tennessee Lady Vols rarely lose at home. In fact, since moving to the Thompson-Boling Arena for the 1987-88 campaign, UT has lost two games in one season just seven times. UT lost two games in TBA during the in-augural 1987-88 campaign, 1996-97, 1999-00, 2001-02, 2003-04, 2005-06 and 2008-09 seasons. The 20 all-time losses at TBA have come at the hands of just 10 teams: Virginia (2008), Florida (2006), LSU (2008, 2006), Duke (2009, 2007, 2004), Connecticut (2004, 2002, 2000, 1996), Louisiana Tech (1999, 1989), Georgia (1996, 1991), Texas (2003, 2002, 1987), Stan-ford (1996) and Auburn (1988).

HOME SWEET HOME The victory over Georgia on Jan. 31, 2005, was the Lady Vols 400th home win since Pat Summitt took over as head coach in 1974. Summitt has won 91.6 percent of all home games in 37 years producing a 492-45 overall record. Home losses (in the Summitt era) in-clude: six in Alumni Gym from 1974-76; 19 in Stokely Athletics Center from 1976-87; and20 in Thompson-Boling Arena.

100 POINT GAMESSince 1974, the Lady Vols have gone over the century mark 76 times. The 1987-88 team hit triple digits in sev-en games to lead the NCAA. UT has a record of 73-3 all-time in 100-point games and a 51-0 record when hitting the century mark at Thompson-Bol-

ing Arena.

IN OVERTIMETennessee is 28-13 all-time in overtime games. The most OT games in a year was tied in 2003-04 with four as the Lady Vols went 3-1 in overtime losing to Georgia, 68-66, and defeating Auburn, 68-61, DePaul, 96-89, and Stanford, 70-66. It tied the mark set in 1996-97, when the Lady Vols were 3-1 in overtime contests los-ing to Georgia, 94-93, and defeating Texas, 68-65, Vanderbilt, 92-79 and LSU, 100-99.UT’s 22 points in the OT against Florida (2-3-05), was the most ever scored by the Lady Vols in a single overtime. UT’s most recent OT affair was a 82-72 win over Stanford on Dec. 19, 2010, at home.
