After European Standard EN 14470-1 came into force in 2004

there were changes affecting both the manufacturers and users

of safety cabinets, which for the first time in the history of safety

were implemented throughout EUROPE:

What has changed since the introduction of EN 14470-1

(safety cabinets for flammable liquids)?

The classification of the fire resistance capability was

defined for 4 types:

Type 15 = ≥ 15 minutes




However, as Type 15 safety cabinets are not approved for use

in Germany at all, and the use of Type 30 and Type 60 safety

cabinets is subject to limitations (TRbF 20 Annex L), safety

cabinets with a fire resistance capability ≥ 90 minutes

(Type 90) are confirmed as being the state of the art in

Germany.

In contrast, in many other European countries the lack of

legislation covering safety cabinets has meant that the use

of the other type classes is permitted.

This is why we have safety cabinets from the lower type classes

in our supply range (e.g. Type 30 = ≥ 30 minutes); however,

these are exclusively intended for export.

The construction and testing of safety cabinets:.

Type-testing of the whole safety cabinet construction

in the fire chamber of an independent materials

testing institute (flaming) according to test conditions

that are uniform throughout Europe.

Dimensional variations without comparative testing

are limited to a reduction in the height and width of

max. 100 mm and a reduction in the depth of

max. 150 mm.

workroom.

Fire department personnel and rescue teams must

be given sufficient time to enter the workroom before

the hazardous substances stored in the safety cabinet

turn a small fire that can be extinguished into an

uncontrollable one.

PRACTICAL INFORMATION about TRbF 20-L


The operator of safety cabinets as per DIN 12 925 part 1 / EN 14470 part 1 is responsible for their proper use. The corresponding

requirements are covered in the German „Technical Rules for Flammable Liquids“ (TRbF) 20-L and represent the basic safety requirements

for operating safety cabinets for the storage of flammable liquids.

1. Fire resistance capability:

Safety cabinets within the meaning of the TRbF are particular devices with a fire resistance

capability of > 90 minutes (as per EN 14470-1) – technological state-of-the-art in Germany.

In the case of fire they ensure sufficient time for escape and rescue (requirement as per

EN 14470-1).

2. Installation and operation:

… to protect employees and third parties, in particular from fire and explosion hazards

3. Collection volume:

Each safety cabinet must be equipped with a base trough which can accommodate at least

10% of the total volume of all stored containers and/or 110% of the volume of the largest

stored container.

4. Self-closing doors:

Doors of safety cabinets as per EN 14470-1 are fundamentally self-closing.

All storeLAB safety cabinets are equipped with a hold-open device (doors remain open

during operation); this ensures safe operation, loading and removal. A thermal mechanism

automatically closes the doors at a max. room temperature of 50°C.

5. Maximum storage amounts:

The amount of flammable liquids that can be stored in safety cabinets is limited! The total of all the stored containers (within a fire

section) must not exceed the following maximum amounts:

• In breakable containers:

- 60 litres extremely flammable and highly flammable liquids (flashpoint below 21°C)

- 200 litres flammable liquids (flashpoint from 21°C to 55°C)

• In other containers:

- 450 litres extremely flammable and highly flammable liquids (flashpoint below 21°C)

- 3000 litres flammable liquids (flashpoint from 21°C to 55°C)

• The maximum storage amount for safety cabinets with a fire resistance capability (FWF) of less than 90 minutes is limited to

max. 300 litres! Of this amount the extremely flammable and highly flammable liquids must not exceed max. 200 litres!

6. Ventilation:

With forced ventilation:

• Safety cabinets must be operated so that the air inlet and outlet system is

constantly effective; the rate of air exchange with the cabinet doors closed

must be at least 10 times per hour.

• Ventilation must be effective immediately above the base trough of the cabinet.

• The ventilation system must discharge into the atmosphere at a non-hazardous

location.

• Air inlet and outlet opening must be automatically sealed at a max. temperature

of 70°C (+/- 10°C).

Without forced ventilation:

• Avoidance of electrostatic charges – the cabinet must be grounded.

• The area of 2.5 m around the safety cabinet and up to a height of 0.5 m above

floor level is to be regarded as a Zone 2 explosion-endangered area.

Connection work to be done by customer!

Our safety cabinets for the storage of hazardous substances are provided with a DN 75 / DN 80 exhaust air connection. The forced

ventilation can be carried out by one of our standard extraction fans or by a suitable in-house air extraction system. The exhaust air is

to be discharged from the building into a hazard-free zone.

The operation of safety cabinets for the storage of flammable liquids as per EN 14470-1 is governed by TRbF 20-L. If the cabinets are

used without forced ventilation then an EX zone (Zone 2) must be set up and maintained around the cabinet at a:

- distance of 2.5 m around the cabinet, and

- 50 cm high

For this reason, and also to avoid the presence of hazardous vapours in the atmosphere near the cabinet, we always recommend that

safety cabinets are operated with an extraction fan (min. air exchange rate 10 times per hour) for proper operation in accordance with

TRbF 20-L! If an extraction fan is to be used in an EX-endangered zone then it is essential that an EX-proof version is used!

If a LACONT Hazardous Substances Filter Attachment GFA Basic is used then it is no longer necessary to maintain an

explosion-endangered zone around the safety cabinet (see TRbF 20 Annex L # 4.2.), as proved by a test report issued by

a recognised testing, monitoring and certification office (test laboratory accredited by the German Accreditation

Council DAR)

Exhaust ducts venting in the open air are no longer necessary, so no cost-intensive installation work is required

No room atmosphere pollution due to virtually 100% filtering of all solvent vapours – employee health protection!

Low service and maintenance costs

Functioning, display and operation:

The LACONT Hazardous Substances Filter Attachment Basic reacts to coarse

particulate contaminants (dust, etc.) as well as to strong contamination of

the exhaust air by hydrocarbon vapours and gases. A saturated filter is

indicated by warning LEDs.

Hydrocarbon vapours are removed from the exhaust air from the cabinet by passing it through the built-in active charcoal filter so that

the air can be discharged directly into the room atmosphere. The special feature of the filter is its tandem structure. If a breakthrough

is detected then the second built-in filter will retain the breakthrough for a period of up to 14 days.

In order to ensure hazard-free working conditions the LaCont hazardous substances filter attachment Basic should be serviced and its

functions checked by an expert at least once per year. The tandem active charcoal filter should be replaced during this check.

STORAGE OF PRESSURISED GAS CYLINDERS

What has changed since the introduction of EN 14470-2 (Safety cabinets for pressurised gas cylinders)?

Changes occurred for manufacturers and users of pressurised gas safety cabinets when European Standard EN 14470-2 came into force

in 2006, as now for the first time in the history of safety cabinets this standard was to be implemented throughout Europe:

• The classification of the fire resistance capability has been

divided into 4 classes:

G 15 = ≥ 15 minutes




EN 14470-2 describes the construction and safety criteria for safety cabinets

to be used in laboratories for the storage of pressurized gas cylinders at

normal room temperatures.

However, in Germany TRG 280 (Technical Rules for Gases) applies as the

basis for the storage of pressurized gas cylinders.

According to TRG 280 the following principles must be observed (further

details and requirements can be found in TRG 280):

STORAGE (TRG 280 – 2.2):

Storage is to be understood as keeping a stock of pressurised gas cylinders. Storage is not to be understood as connecting up

pressurised gas cylinders for emptying them, or for keeping them ready for service and maintenance purposes.

AVAILABILITY (TRG 280 – 2.3):

Availability is to be understood as keeping filled pressurised gas cylinders at the places intended for their use as reserve cylinders,

either connected to or ready to be connected to a gas supply device, to the extent that is necessary for allowing continuation of

work. It is also to be understood as keeping filled pressurized gas cylinders at the workplace for manual gas supply.

STORAGE in ROOMS (TRG 280 – 5.2):

Rooms intended for the storage of pressurised gas cylinders must be separated from neighbouring rooms by at least

fire-retarding components Fire-retarding components are required if fire and explosion hazards exist in neighbouring

rooms not used for the storage of pressurized gas cylinders.

FIRE-RETARDING in the meaning of TRG (TRG 280 – 2.11) is the fire performance of components as per DIN 4102 for an exposure

period of 30 minutes (fire resistance class F 30).

FIRE-RESISTANT in the meaning of TRG (TRG 280 – 2.12) is the fire performance of components as per DIN 4102 for an exposure

period of 90 minutes (fire resistance class F 90).

BGR 120 – Guidelines for Laboratories (formerly ZH 1/119):

5.4.3.1 To avoid risks pressurised gas cylinders should be stored outside the laboratories if possible and the gases supplied to the

workplaces via permanently laid pipelines. If this is not possible, and if pressurised gas cylinders have to be used in laboratories

with an increased fire risk then, in the case of fire, the pressurised gas cylinders must be protected against excessive heat by taking

appropriate protective measures (storage in gas cylinder safety cabinets as per DIN 12925-2 / EN 14470-2).

Even today it is not entirely clear which fire resistance capabilities apply in laboratories for users in Germany. The current European

harmonisation of requirements and regulations is increasingly transferring the responsibility to the user. Today as manufacturers we

offer safety cabinets with a fire resistance capability of G 30.

This is in accordance with the previous state of the art in Germany, as per DIN 12925-2. The corresponding protective aims must

be achieved: (EN 14470-2 – Introduction: "The fire resistance capability should allow personnel to leave the workroom and allow

fire-fighters to reach the location before the pressurized gas cylinders become unstable").
