History of Ladakh
● The state of Jammu and Kashmir was
accorded special status by Article 370 of the
Constitution of India.
● Fa-Hein referred to it as Kia-Chha and
Hiuen Tsang as Ma-Lo-Pho.
● Between the 1380s and early 1510s, many
Islamic missionaries propagated Islam and
proselytised the Ladakhi people.
● In 1834, the Sikh Zorawar Singh, a general
of Raja Gulab Singh of Jammu invaded and
annexed Ladakh to Jammu under the
suzerainty of the Sikh Empire.
● In February 2019, Ladakh became a
separate Revenue and Administrative
Division within Jammu and Kashmir, having
previously been part of the Kashmir Division.

Geography
● The mountain ranges in this region were formed
over 45 million years by the folding of the Indian
Plate into the more stationary Eurasian Plate.
● The peaks in the Ladakh Range are at a medium
altitude close to the Zoji-la (5,000–5,500 m or
16,000–18,050 ft) and increase toward southeast,
culminating in the twin summits of Nun-Kun (7000
m or 23,000 ft).
● The Suru and Zanskar valleys form a great trough
enclosed by the Himalayas and the Zanskar Range.
● The Indus River is the backbone of Ladakh.

Major Dams
Nimoo Bazgo Hydroelectric Plant: The Nimoo Bazgo Power Project is a run-of-the-river power project on the
Indus River situated at Alchi village, 75 kilometres (47 mi) from Leh.
General Facts
● Situated at an altitude of 4,500 meters, the Indian Astronomical Observatory at Hanle is the
second-highest optical telescope in the world.
● While the highest settlement is at 4,400 m at Pensi-la, extremities are crossed further when it comes
to agricultural fields. On the Tso Moriri Lake at Korzok where the altitude is 4,600 meters, you'll be
witness to the highest fields in the world.
● The Bactrian camel better known as the Two-Humped Camel is a large, even-toed ungulate native
of the place. And Ladakh is the only place in India where twin humped camels are found.
General Facts
● The Magnetic Hill is a wide open stretch of a road, surrounded by tall and rocky mountains
on the route from Leh to Kargil.
● Ladakh is a cold desert that in the Great Himalayas with extremely low temperatures with
very less vegetation.
● People of Ladakh follow Tibetan calendar. Their year consists of 12 months each of 30 days
for two consecutive years and the third year consists of 13 months.
● The Khardung La Pass in Ladakh which is at an elevation of 5,359 meters is claimed to be
the highest motorable road in the world.

● The Chadar -Trek on the frozen Zanskar river in Leh. It usually starts late-December, early
January and batches go on till February. The trek is the hardest one in India and also in the
top 10 Hardest treks in the world.

Dances of Ladakh
● JABRO DANCE: Jabro is a community dance of the nomadic people of Tibetan
origin living in the high hills of the Changtheng area of Ladakh.
● DRUGPA-RCHES: Drugpa-Rches dance is performed by the Dards, the people of
Aryan origin, settled in the Drass and Gorkhan areas of Ladakh.
● YAK DANCE: The theme of this unique and amazing dance is that two men
donning the skins of the Yak, dance with gentle and rhythmic movements.
● TUKHATANMO: In the Zanskar and Bakhamul area, the seasonal dance
Tukhstanmo is performed.

Famous Places of Ladakh
● LEH PALACE: Leh Palace was built during the 17th century by the ruler King Sengge Namgyal. Its
construction is on the same lines as the construction of the Potala Palace in Lhasa, Tibet.
● STOK PALACE: Stok Palace, built by King Tsespal Tondup Namgyal in 1825, in the present times
is the residential palace of the royal descendants of King Sengge Namgyal.
● HALL OF FAME: The Hall of Fame, located near the Leh Airfiled, is a museum constructed as well
as maintained by the Indian Army in the memory of the soldiers who had lost their lives during the
Indo-Pak wars.
● SHANTI STUPA: The Shanti Stupa is white-colored domed-shaped structure, located in Chandspa
which looks extremely beautiful during night when it is illuminated.
Famous Places of Ladakh
● Pangong Lake: This lake is situated at an altitude of 14,100 ft. in the Eastern sector of
Ladakh, at a distance of 150 km from Leh across Changla pass (17,000ft.).
● Tsomoriri Lake: This lake is situated at a elevation of 15,000 ft. above the sea level, at
a distance of 240 km from Leh in the South-eastern sector of Ladakh. It is like a pearl
shaped and contains large mineral deposits.
● Nubra Division: Major attraction of Nubra is the highest motorable road Khardongla
pass (18,380ft.) majestic peaks and glaciers enchanting valleys and villages.

● Parvati Devi: Rani Parvati Devi Deskit Wangmo is the Queen mother of Ladakh and a former
member of the 6th Lok Sabha (1977–80).
● Tsering Landol: Tsering Landol is an Indian gynecologist and one of the pioneers of women's
health in Ladakh region in the North Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir.
● Rinchan: He ruled Kashmir from 1320 to 1323 and was instrumental in establishing Islam in
Kashmir.
● Sonam Wangchuk: Sonam Wangchuk is an Indian engineer, innovator and education reformist. He
is the founding-director of the Students' Educational and Cultural Movement of Ladakh (SECMOL).
