In 1981 Lacey introduced a new high school and with it a varsity football program under the direction of Head Coach Lou Vircillo. The school started with a pop-ulation of five hundred students and an athletic Group I football squad of some thirty five players. They played their first season as an independent team against some larger schools including two Group IV teams. The Lions registered their 1st victory in the second game which was played against a speedy Pleasantville squad near Atlantic City. They also capped the season with the 1st Elks Trophy victory on Thanksgiving over Pinelands culminating in a winning season in the inaugural year. All Star Lineman, Ron Stephenson became the first recipient of the Lombardi Award and also received the Most Valuable Player the Year. His son Ron would become a standout player in 2005-07 and be the first son of a player to play at LTHS. Kevin Smith was the first to be named to the Newark Star Ledger All Shore Team and the All State Group I Team. Guy Pizzulo would be the first to compete in college football at Trenton State College (today known as College of New Jersey). After graduation he joined the Army for a career and served for many years in the Pentagon. Craig Stratton will be remembered for his big hit that broke up the final play of the Pleasantville game and secur-ing the first victory. Today Craig is a businessman in town. Bob Tupper would hold the high school track javelin record for twenty eight years, and Christopher Simpson became Lacey High School’s first Chiropractic Physician.

Now going into a milestone year - the 30th football season, Lacey has registered 11 Conference Titles which ranks them #4 of all 44 Shore Conference schools. Including his record at Red Bank Regional, Coach Lou Vircillo has garnered 232 total victories placing him at #3 historically in the Shore Conference for victory production behind Warren Wolf of Brick Township and Vic Kubu of Manasquan respectively.

During Lacey’s early years the Lions found themselves growing rapidly as a school and would have to catch up to tougher competition as they would change conferences every two years. After the first year of being an independent team, they en-tered the “C” division for both 1982 and ’83 and grew from a Group I to a small Group II school.

1982 ushered Lacey into the first year in the Shore Conference and in the “C” Division. Lacey ran through the first year in the conference undefeated, winning the schools 1st title. They would also be invited to play in the elite state playoffs for the first time against a very powerful and traditional team in Delsea Regional. The outcome was close and showed that

the Lions could play anyone. They dominated the Thanksgiving Day game against Pinelands winning their 2nd Elks Trophy. At the season’s end many of the twenty two seniors would receive honors and recognition. Andy Pasqua became the first of many future Lacey running backs to rush for 1000 yards in a season. He captained an Upsala College team, graduated, and is the president of a company today. The offense was considered the number one rushing offense in the county. Nose guard Ralph Scafa was the very first Lion to be named to the Asbury Park Press All Shore Team. Greg Musselman was named the number one student of his class and went on to Harvard University. He is a lawyer and an Army Officer. All County guard, Scott Quinn, entered the United States Naval Academy and became an officer serving on a nuclear submarine and is an Epis-copal Minister today. Offensive lineman Rich Cottrell would go on to become Lacey High School’s first dentist; big Rich Tupper went on to work for the township; Jeff Fenton took over the family business; Jon Donnelly led his company’s efforts in the clean up action of the Twin Tower devastation of 9-11. John Sabarese still holds on to his tackling records of ’82 and is a businessman. Defensive end, Tim Braddock enjoyed some family fame after the story of his grandfather was told in mov-ies in “The Cinderella Man” and today is the owner of an accounting firm. Both John and Tim serve as officers in the Lacey Football Foundation. Defensive Lineman Kevin Lundberg is a United States Federal Agent. Tight end Tim Geraghty works for the Power Plant; wide receiver Glenn Christy went into law enforcement, and the

first “Lion Hearted” recipient, Joe Gervasini is today a businessman.

In 1983 the Lacey Lions ended the season with a big victory over Pinelands Regional capturing the third straight Elks Trophy. Other big victories came over Man-chester and Point Pleasant Beach. Tim Noren went on to have a great four years of playing at West Virginia Weslyan . Teammate, Craig Cicardo, captained his Fairleigh Dickinson University team and played quarterback. He became a teacher and a football coach and his son Craig Jr. became a LTHS quarterback himself playing from 2008-10. Both Tim and Craig were invited to play with USA football Team coached by Coach Vircillo in the late 80’s. They played internationally against the Italian National team in the summer of 1989. Big lineman Charlie Thiel gave up a scholar-ship to Bucknell University to go to college

and the ministry. Robert Beile and Michael O’Hearn would both find themselves in the business world. Beloved junior Rich Harrold will always be remembered by his team mates. He died in a hunting accident the day after the Thanksgiving Day game against Pinelands.

In 1984 and ’85 the Lions would be placed in a new and tougher

“C South” Division which would be won by a traditional and powerful Shore Regional in ’84 and then by a loaded Freehold Boro led by Joe “the Jet” Henderson in ’85. But the Lions were very competitive in Division play in both seasons only losing one game in the final minutes of play against Freehold and with it the title. In 1984 beat Mon-signor Donovan, Manchester, Point Beach, Pinelands and played Central for the 1st time winning the Elks Trophy match up against them. After the 1984 season linebacker, Derek Torre, became the fist Lacey player to be invited to play in the prestigious North-South State All Star Classic. Dave Van Brunt attended Fairleigh Dickenson University and played four years as a wide receiver, and Dave Supsie went on to play major college baseball before coming home and taking a position as a Lacey Township po-lice officer.

After the 1985 season Mike Berardo and Pete Luciano were named 1st team All Shore. The Lions lost only one that year and recorded victories against Mon-signor Donovan, Point Beach, Manchester, Pinelands, and another big victory over arch rival Central. Scott Schubiger went on to play at Bowdoin College in Maine, became a graduate assistant football coach and finally a businessman. Tom Martin received his PhD. from Clemson University and today is a Colonel in the United States Army. Ed Ko-rivo went out to Saint Francis University in Loretto, Penn-sylavina and played some football and Mike Murphy, who had a great three years at Lacey, did the same at Fairleigh Dickensen University. Mike later came home and coached for the Lions for a few years.

As Lacey entered 1986 and ’87 the growth of the school continued to now make the Lions Group III and would again advance its level of competition. Lacey was competitive in most games but found itself lacking depth in certain positions and that would ultimately keep them from attaining another title.

In 1986 victories over Raritan, Point Pleasant Boro, Brick Memorial and Wall were special. Christopher Supsie finished his season in ’86, went on to Rutgers University, played light weight football and became a lawyer. His long time buddy and team mate, Matt Opacity, attended Trenton State College and became an All American wrestler and then went on to be-

come a teacher and wrestling coach. Mike Spatz became the first and only Lacey football player to earn four varsity letters, Rich Dehmer earned a PhD., and Billy Elias became a policeman, a pastor, and a special speed and conditioning coach for young soccer players. He was invited to instruct internationally. Al Benz moved down to North Carolina and started his own business. Chris Lauriegh and Pat Palagonia would do the same locally, Chris in the auto field and Pat in construction. Mike Berenwick went to work for the Township of Lacey. Darrin Coraggio earned his degree in Engineering.

In 1987 an opening day victory over Toms River North was a highlight. Other big wins came over Monsignor Donovan and Brick Memorial. After the ’87 season Tim O’Rourke went on to win the Meet of Champions in the 200 yard dash and setting new school track records. He resides in Hawaii and is a teacher. Rob Wright went on to New Haven Uni-versity to play guard, after graduating he went into law enforcement. Lou Copio became a teacher and head football coach in Delaware, and Jim Knoeller played college football at Moravian College before becoming a New Jersey State Trooper and a youth football coach. Wide receiver, Shawn Giordano graduated from Seton Hall University and is now a very successful businessman, Bryan Mckay is a policeman locally, and Scott Stevens works in the county prosecutor’s office. It was in 1987 that the promised weight room was finally completed. Workouts started to take on a new meaning.

The boys of the ’88 season brought titles back to town. Lacey started out with a big win over Toms River North and a key conference victory over Red Bank Catholic. Keith Elias, was injured in ’87, but would spearhead an assault during the 1988 and ’89 seasons that not only brought Lacey two more Conference Championships in the new ‘B South” but also offered to the township its very own State Title. This was the result of defeating a speedy Woodrow Wilson - Camden in a wild finish capped by a last second field goal by Carl Tarricone. The Lions would have a victory which many newspapers would call “the game of a de-cade.” It was Mike Lehetinen that caught the special pass from junior Keith Elias that set up the last second field goal. found there way to the schools play “Grease” where the football team saved the day by beefing up the crew of ac-tors and selling out all shows. Brett Deptula was a stel-lar football player that season and one of the stars of the play. He went on to college and then the music industry business where his company cut a gold record. All county guard Rob Duffy went to William Paterson State to play before becoming a Lacey Township police officer, Chris Luberto broke all Lacey weight lifting school records, and Chris Furrule went on to Wesley College in Delaware and earned Little All American honors as a defensive end. Chris is now the President of a company. Jim Tweed went on to become a teacher and coach. Joe Tracey and Rob Klaus are businessman.

In 1989 Lacey would go undefeated winning its 2nd SJ Group III State Title over Woodrow Wilson in a rematch. Woodrow Wilson was the #1 team in all of South Jersey and was also ranked #1 in the Philadelphia Enquire for the greater Delaware Area as well as #5 in the entire State of New Jersey by the Newark Star Ledger. But before the Lions would meet Woodrow they needed to play a big

and strong undefeated Mainland team. Both victories plus the undefeated mark would give the Lacey team the recognition of being the best team in all South Jersey in a decade as well as a top 5 rating in the state. Keith Elias would have back to back 1000 yard rushing seasons with an amazing 418 yards against Freehold Township that brought national interest to Lacey by USA Today. Elias was named All State 1st Team, won a HS Heisman before he became a Princeton Kodak All American and a NFL Giant. Linebacker Ron Leard and lineman Scott Hebrew earned post season honors and Jason “Mush” Beneciuk would go on to work on a PhD. from the University of Florida in the field of physical therapy. Big all star lineman, Dave Egan went on to do his advance degree work at Iowa University where he still works today.

In 1990 Lacey ripped through the conference play for another championship and went after its 3rd State Title. During the season they recorded big victories over Freehold Boro 41-7, Wall 49-0 Pinelands 33-0 , Point Pleasant Boro 42-3, Raritan 40-7 Monmouth 41-13, and Central 27-7. Senior Garrett Gardi, who led the 1988 and’89 team as the quarterback was now in his senior year. The would be All State and All Ivy league player for Cornell University led the Shore as the #1 passer but he found himself in a state playoff game against a tough Overbrook team and a unmerciful whipping wind. What made matters worse in 1990 was the crippling loss of their 1000 yard rusher junior Dave Cottrell who was injured in the Central game and could not play. Lacey outplayed Overbrook but could not manage to score. The game ended in an 8-0 loss and Overbrook would go on to play and beat Brick Memorial in the finals, a team that Lacey had all ready beat soundly during the regular season.

1991 was led by a three year starter and All State center Keith Bulicz. They played competitively and would win a fourth consecutive “B South” title. Bulicz received scholarships from Clemson, Virginia, Maryland, North Carolina, and Vanderbilt. He attended Vanderbilt and made the varsity team in his freshman year.

During 1991 there was a must win game against a hot Pinelands team and the vic-tory set the tone for the run for a 4th consecutive title. The Pinelands victory would also give Coach Vircillo his 100th career win. Mike Kilmurray dominated play as a defensive back and wide receiver. As an All County player Mike Kilmurray was recruited by Ivy League schools but accepted an appointment to the United States Naval Academy. He became a naval officer and pilot flying missions in Kosovo, Iraq, and Afghanistan. Today he is a lt. commander in the Navy Reserves and a pilot for Fed Ex.

With a big come from behind victory against Monmouth Regional featuring out-standing running from Dave Cottrell, and a solid victory against arch rival Central Regional the home team walked away with the banner and the Elks Trophy again. Dave would go on to Wesleyan College in Connecticut where he would break and

set new rushing records for the old New England school. John Simonson became a Lacey police officer, and Jeff Brewer and Jason King returned home after college to become school administrators for the Lacey Township School District.

1992 and 1993 the “B South” Conference Titles still belonged to the Lions, with ’93 being the 6th year in a row and with that tying a Shore Conference record shared by football powers Brick Township and Manasquan.

In 1992 a “Brotherhood” of seniors won 10 straight games with the help of a half a dozen juniors and the same number of sophomores. Victories over Brick Me-morial, Freehold Township, Toms River North, and Free-hold Boro would set up a key game against Toms River South. After a knee injury limited his offensive play, Brian Elias would rise to the occasion to play a full game of of-fense along with his defensive role in the key game against Toms River South. He rushed for over 100 yards and led his team to a victory. Jon Coen’s kick off return against Ocean City in the state semi placed the ’92 team in an un-

expected state final against Egg Harbor which would become the only loss of the season. The ’92 team produced quarterback Rich Barglowski who became Monmouth University’s first captain, Tom Nolan, who starred for Rowan University during their National Title runs of the 90’s, Dave Lobdell and Matt Coffee would star on the gridiron at FDU and College of NJ respectively and Brett Vastano who earned a PhD. from Rutgers University in the field of nutritional science.

In 1993 Lacey would again go through the regular season undefeated and this time not beating Central once but back to back with the latter game being a state play off semi final. The victory would again put Lacey in the finals and again against Egg Harbor but this time without Coach Lou Vircillo who was in the hospital with pneumonia. Before reaching the final game the team recorded early key victories against Brick, Freehold Township, Southern, Toms River North, and Freehold. In the final state playoff game Lacey, driving for the winning touchdown in the last few minutes of the fourth quarter, would run out of time and come up short. Gary Sasala would become the next running back to rush for back to back 1000 yard seasons in both ’92 and ’93 and TJ Hutler would make All State honors culminating the year and later play football at Moravian College. Billy Simonson went on to Iona University to study and play foot-ball and became a New Jersey State Trooper as did Doug Lemanowicz , who became an elite member of the New Jersey State Trooper SWAT unit. Eric Sundstrom entered the United States Air Force and college after that.

The 1994 season was led by a strong group of seniors and 1st team All State linebacker in Casey Mahoney. The Lions boasted their best overall team in history but also suffered an unusual number of injuries. The “men of autumn” out-played their first eight opponents during that season but then hobbled into the state playoffs and would lose a heartbreaker 7-3 to Brick Township as well as the Thanksgiving game to Central. Brick overcame Central for the State Championship in ’94. Casey Mahoney earned a five year scholarship to Hofstra University where he excelled. Teammate Jerry Karacz became the captain at historic Tufts University, Greg Hauswirth competed at Carnegie Melon and received post season honors, Greg Brandis went on and played at FDU and became a high school administrator. Brian Tamedl played football at RPI and became an Engineer, FDU players / gradu-ates, Chris Bergstrom is a businessman, Chuck Boyer a firefighter and Rich Diab still enjoys the gridiron as a football official. Eight season victories included four shut outs: Pinelands 41-0, Wall 14-0, Toms River South 13-10 and Monsignor Donovan 18-0.

In 1995 senior quarterback, Mike Granato , was entering into his third consecutive season as a starter . Mike Granato had a stellar fall and brought his team to win the 8th school conference title before going on to Weidner University where he became a “Little All American” quar-terback. Junior Jay Frazee would enter the stable as the next thoroughbred 1000 yard running back. Lacey posted vic-tories over Pinelands 16-6, Wall 28-7, Manchester 24-7, Southern 27-6. Additionally they had two shutouts: Monsignor Donovan 32-0 and Central 25-0.

Between 1996 and 1999 the Lions would find themselves all four years in 2nd place in the con-ference finish. Traditionally rich Manasquan took the dominant lead of the “B South” but in two of those seasons it was “Lady Luck” that helped the Blue Warriors past the Lions. Especially in 1997 when yet another great running back would emerge rushing for over 1600 yards. Greg Elias had an amazing 240 plus yards in a losing effort only to watch a major col-lege athlete in Jake Lanfried, the Manasquan quarterback, scramble and elude two Lacey tacklers , reverse field, and score a winning touchdown. In 1996 the Lions were still named Ocean Counties #1 team earning the Observers Trophy. They would also beat arch rival Central for the coveted Elks Trophy in ’96, ’97, ’98 but would be stopped on a last play goal line effort in 1999. Two more 1000 yard rushers would emerge during this time. Brian Wehner was most remembered for his outstanding game over a ranked Monmouth County opponent, Ocean Township, in 1998. Mike Farnkoph would garnish the honors in ’99.

In 1996 1000 yard rusher, Jay Frazee, was lost to a mid season injury leaving All County lineman Jarrod Burke to spear the way. Season victories in-cluded Toms River South, Manchester, Pinelands, Point Pleasant Boro, Brick Me-morial, Monsignor Donovan, and Central. This class will ultimately boast having the #1 student in the class in Jeff Karacz going on to play college football with his brother at Tufts University in Boston. Ed Fitzpatrick would play at Kings College, Jerry Yorke at Central Connecticut State University and Darrell Nick would become an All American punter at Monmouth University. Ron Torres became a line coach for one of the best high school teams in southern California and John Mclean earned his PhD.

In 1997 Chris Natoli snared an All State Hon-ors as a lineman, Joe Roberts earned a scholarship to Fairfield University where he attained All American mention, and Jeff Marques received a nomination to at-tend the Merchant Marine Academy and became a Navy Officer and pilot. Greg Elias finished a Masters Degree in counseling and coaches high school football; Sean Kearney trained for special forces in the navy; Mike Ma-loney joined the marines; and Dan Norton became a po-lice officer. The Lions posted a 7-2 record on the season. Victories included:Wall 26-7, Manchester 45-7, Point Boro 34-7, Central 7-6 and three shut outs: Pinelands 14-0, Brick Memorial 19-0, Monsignor Donovan 48-0.

In 1998 both the defense and the offense were ranked 2nd in overall statistics in the county. Hector Berrios starred as a two way player and boasted post season honors. Brian Wehner is re-membered most for his monstrous game against Ocean Twp. and his 1000 yard rushing season. The Will Reilly and Kyle Schafer passing connection added a dimension of excitement to the season. The Lions posted big victories over Brick Me-morial 29-0, Allentown 56-0, Ocean 34-7, Pinelands 42-7 Monsignor Donovan 40-6, Oakcrest 13-12 and Central 20-0. Joe Manger finished a fine high school career and went on to excel at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. He was named an All Conference as a defensive back and completed an engineering degree.

In 1999 the Lions would finish the decade in their last season of the “B South” conference. Senior running back Mike Farnkopf would lead the team as a two way player and become another Lacey Township High School 1000 yard rusher. He received post season honors as an All County player along with junior teammate Ray Denman. Frankopf was named to the New Jersey Top 100 Athletes. Victories included an Allentown shut out and impressive wins over Ocean, Pinelands, Manalapan, Manchester and Monsignor Donovan.

During the last decade the Lions football team played in an elevated league called the Constitution Division. They were still a group III school but play mostly group IV teams. The prediction of playing this kind of football week in and week out was more 50/50 year to year. It was a black and blue Division and considered the toughest league in the Shore most years with teams knocking each other off in order to emerge the champion. Lacey entered the new league in 2000 win-ning exactly one half of its games. But in 2001 the Lions won a title again with an exciting victory over Toms River South. Two more were won in 2005 and 2006 with ’06 being a perfect 12-0 including another State Championship. Lacey would also make title runs in 2003, 2007, 2008 and 2009 but would end in 2nd place. In each of these years the boys were invited to the elite state playoffs and most years made it to the semi finals. Five more running backs became 1000 yard backs. Anthony Ringle ’03, Matt Feeney ’05, Chris D’Amico ’06, and Jake Dabel in ’09. In the latter part of the decade the defens-es were also getting much stingier posting a record number of shutouts in 2009 with 5 in a row.

In 2000 a scholarship player, Jarrod Verge (Hofstra University), led the team to a break even season with the big-gest victory coming over Brick Memorial. Tom Dreher would also go on to compete at the College of New Jersey, graduate and enter law enforcement as a State Trooper. The Lions posted victories over Lakewood, Neptune, Brick Memorial, How-ell and Middletown North in overtime. Upon graduation from high school, Matt Crocker would go on to Carnegie Mellon University to play football; Ray Denman would do the same and start as a freshman at Kean University; Greg Ratkowski headed north to Union College near Albany to play football and study engineering.

In 2001 new records were set in the passing and receiving game as se-nior quarterback Kyren Dooley would throw to his favorite target John Mari and create new records in passing yards, passing touchdowns, and pass receptions. Lineman Don Snyder finished his senior year as the #1 student in his class and went to the University of Pennsylvania where he became their Captain as well as an All Ivy League player, and led them to a Ivy League Title. Linebacker Ralph Ruggerio emerged as the career LTHS tackler and second in all time hits behind the line of scrimmage while Rocky Caiola ended his senior year setting the career mark in interceptions. The Lions posted victories over Lakewood, Neptune, Brick Memorial, Howell and Middletown North in overtime. Upon graduation from high school, Matt Crocker would go on to Carnegie Mellon University to play

football; Ray Denman would do the same and start as a freshman at Kean University; Greg Ratkowski headed north to Union Col-lege near Albany to play football and study engineering.

In 2002 senior quarterback Sam Cosantino would set some new marks with his gunslinger style of play. Senior big tight end Ken Henry found himself with a scholarship to Maine University at the end of the season and his team mate Anthony Ringle battled his way through the year to join the 1000 yard rushing club. Kyle Bahrle would go on to play major college baseball. Rick Honeycutt would be considered one of the best defensive players of the decade.Victories included Middletown North 20-13, Ocean Township 24-15, Brick Memorial 28-18 and Manalapan 27-25.

The 2003 team made a great run for the conference crown but fell short to Toms River South coming in second place in the Con-stitution Division. With big wins over Lakewood, Ocean, Howell, Brick Memorial Manalapan and Central the Lions had enough power points to again be invited to the NJ State Playoffs. Brandon Starodub would get a nomination to the Merchant Marine Academy and go on to become a commissioned officer. The class would miss teammate Jimmy Dean after a tragic car accident took his life. Brandon Visokay would join the army and John and Jason Lee went on to college at the University of Delaware.

During the 2004 season seniors Phil Raimondo and Pete Totaro led a team dominated by underclassmen through a tough first half of the 2004 season. But as the sophomores matured the second half of their season turned in their favor. A big upset victory against a favored Pinelands turned some heads in that year and winning the Elks Trophy over Central made it complete. After playing only two years of football it would be punter Kris Jovanovski that would go on to Towson State University and punt for the Tigers. Phil Raimondo became an Army Ranger, and Pete Totaro went to Stockton State College to prepare for a career in the sciences.

In 2005 the senior class matured through a serious and demanding off season program. They dominated confer-ence play winning another Constitution title , beat Pemberton and Ocean City in the states playoffs to enter a contest against Delsea Regional for a championship bout. Matt Feeney led the team on offense with 1000 plus yards as a back. Today Matt is a police officer. Joe Pandorf inspired a tough defense and then went on to William Paterson State College where he con-tinued to play. Outstanding linebacker John Roth is a US Marine. Vince Manzo went on to college and works in the invest-ment industry in New York City. Scott Dotterweich completed his degree at Salisbury State in Maryland. Victories included: Ocean, Lakewood, Toms River East, Middletown North, Toms River South, Pinelands and Central. The victory over Toms River East is especially noted as it led to the conference title. The Central victory brought another Elks Trophy.

The chemistry in 2006 was perfect. The competition was the toughest on record. By the sea-son’s end this Lion team ripped through their schedule of : Manalapan, Toms River South, Long Branch, and How-ell. A pivotal last minute touchdown by sophomore Tom Rickmers over Brick Twp. would preserve the unbeaten mark as the Lacey team would then finish off Colts Neck , Middletown North, and Wall Twp. before entering the state playoffs. State playoff victories over Pemberton and Tri-ton would send them into the finals. But before this, they would have to deal with archrival Central and the Elks Trophy. The final game was set with Seneca High School, an undefeated team ranked #1 in all of south jersey and in the Top 5 in the state. Seneca entered the game with an impressive and powerful offense only to find themselves scoreless at the end of four quarters. Lacey’s defense was perfect on the day and the offense behind the rushing of Chris DiMicco and the outstanding pass receptions of Sean McAndrew put the victory on the scoreboard. Sixteen seniors can claim the best record in Lacey High School history. All State athletes: Vince Elardo went to Monmouth University on a track scholarship; Chris DiMicco went on to Kean University as a running back and Sean McAndrew became a preseason All American as a tight end at Wesley College DE. Additionally, Ryan Bahrle went on to play at Kean University while team-mates Chris Meyler and Michael Hyle would join the US Army and serve overseas. Lacey registered more victories in one sea-son that any team before them. At 12-0 they were perfect: Con-ference and State Champions!

In 2007 the Lions again ran through most of their schedule . They recorded big wins against Manalapan, Toms River South, Colts Neck, Wall, and Middletown North and would enter the state playoffs for the third straight year. A great victory over Delsea and a talented Winslow were outstanding and set up a 7th visit to the state final game, and this time against Shawnee. By the sea-sons end seniors Warren Smith, Justin Rand, Ron Stephensen, Mike Mancini, Fern Silva, and Josh Smith, would all receive post season honors. Jus-tin Rand was named the number one student of his class and also served as the class president. He was recruited to play football at the University of Penn-sylvania. Team mates Mike Mancini and Fern Sil-va went on to Kean University to continue to play, RJ Roe went on to Marist and then transferred to New Hampshire and Warren Smith presently starts as quarterback for the University of Maine.

In 2008 long time teammates Tom Rickmers and Justin Pandorf led their team through a grueling schedule that would end in Brick, Toms River East and Colts Neck all sharing the Conference Title. Before it was all over the Lacey Team would upset Toms River East for their only loss and record another key vic-tory over Middletown North to get into the revered State Playoffs. They showed the state what they were made of by upsetting Ocean City in the first round of the Playoffs. The game was played in the cold rain

and mud and went in to 0-0 overtime. Tom Rickmers threw a halfback option pass to Andrew Burt for the win. Another great game in the semifinals also went into overtime against Hammonton before Lacey Township would fall short. Lacey would own an-other Elks trophy over Central. Tom Rickmers joined the 1000 Yard Club and all Shore Teams included Tom Rickmers. Justin Pandorf plays for Monmouth University

In 2009 five seniors would lead the way through another season reaching the NJSIAA state Semi-Finals. Big victories during the year and a record five shutouts in a row against Brick, Colts Neck, Marlboro, Middletown North, and Freehold Boro set the tone for another Elks Trophy Victory over Central Regional. This game against Central would end the historical series that started in 1984. Lacey dominated the series with 19 victories over Central’s 7. Junior Jake Dabal joined the 1000 Yard Club. Se-niors Corey Neal went on to play for Monmouth University; Joe Tulino went on to do the same at Sacred Heart University and All Shore Player Mike Stuppiello likewise at Assumption College in Massachusetts.

In 1984 Coach Vircillo was asked by the newly formed New Jersey State Coaches Association to represent Ocean County on the State Committee, he was also asked to serve on the North-South All Star Football Classic Committee. He did so and served for over 20 years. He directed the North-South Classic in 1996 and ‘97. In 1998 he founded the Prestigious New Jersey-New York Governors Bowl and served as it’s director for 9 years. Many Lacey athletes benefited by opportunities to showcase themselves over these years and some by receiving scholarships. In 2007 Coach reor-ganized the Shore Football Coaches Association and established the New U.S. Army All Shore Classic.

The Lacey mascot is the Lion – a regal beast with great heart and courage. The “Pride” is its family unit and through its loyalty the “Pride” thrives. The face of the Lion was Lacey High School’s origi-nal official emblem. Lacey Football was the only sport to use the “Paw” for its of-ficial logo from the very beginning. The “Paw” represents the Lion’s tracks, its presence, its domain and its dominance.
