NarrativeWhat it’s all aboutThe International Expo and Cultural Night is a CMU campus event where students from different countries worldwide set up tables with displays. This event gives these students the chance to share their culture with peers in the form of: pictures, food, and various other ways.

What it doesThis gives students native to the U.S. a chance to expand their knowledge on different cultures so that they can better understand the world outside of their home country.

Why it’s importantBeing able to understand different cultures around the world is essential for knowing how to relate with and build relationships with those who come from different cultural backgrounds.

Free Foreign Food SamplesThere were some stations that offered the opportunity to try different types of food from other countries depending on which station you were at.

To the right is a photo of a Lebanese recipe known as Riz B Haleeb. Otherwise known as rice with milk.

Many Different Languages• Some stations offered people the opportunity to see what their names looked like when spelled

out in different languages. Here are two examples using my name.

The Importance of Understanding• This experience gave me a much broader perspective on the different cultures of countries

within Asia and Africa. For example, I learned things about Syria that I never would have learned from conventional media. There is no way to truly understand somebody else’s culture until you’ve had the chance to talk to them about it. Being able to understand why somebody is where they are at is essential when it comes to avoiding ignorance among various other things.
