A Comprehensive BLI Laboratory Evaluation DECEMBER 2014
The Samsung ProXpress C2620DW offers excellent ease of use both from the desktop and at the device, but what really separates it from the competition is its very low cost of ownership. Users can toggle between the PCL and SPL drivers via a well-designed interface. Down-loadable, workflow-based apps can be run on the touchscreen (un-usual for single-function printers), which allows users to check counters and status and access the Help function. The legal-size laser printer offers compatibility with NFC technology, the Samsung Mobile Print App, Apple AirPrint and, natively, the ability to output files from Google Cloud Print Drive, all of which can boost worker productivity. Thanks to several noteworthy features such as standard automatic duplexing, the Eco tab in the driver interface and the Eco button on the display, the ProXpress C2620DW helps organizations become more “green” and save money, too. Administrators can further reduce costs by control-ling access to color usage thanks to the Job Accounting plug-in for the fleet management utility. With crisp text and dark solids in general of-fice documents, the ProXpress C2620DW provided business graphics output that exhibited bright colors; productivity was competitive. The unit carries a much lower than average purchase price and offers a sup-plies cost per page that’s among the lowest; this translates to a TCO over 36 months that’s also among the lowest compared with competi-tive devices tested to date. Offering excellent overall value based on performance, features and cost of ownership, the Samsung ProXpress C2620DW is highly recommended by BLI.

ADMINISTRATIVE UTILITIES VERY GOOD
Samsung SyncThru Web Service, the embedded web server, lets administrators perform a many tasks, including changing device, security and network settings, as well as viewing several counters. The home screen (above) is particularly helpful as it provides a place where administrators can view top-level information.
Samsung SyncThru Web Admin Service enables administrators to manage a fleet of mixed hardware. Typical of OEM-developed network management tools, details about third-party devices depend on what’s provided by the specific manufacturer. Via an optional plug-in, administrators can limit or restrict color usage. Overall, BLI feels that the utility is feature-rich and easy to use.

FEEDBACK TO WORKSTATIONS VERY GOOD
Samsung Printer Status delivers pop-up messages for warnings and errors such as when toner is low or paper has been depleted. Typical of devices in this class, no print job completion notification is available, but users can configure the utility to pop up when a job is in progress. The unit can’t be set to beep if an error has occurred, but this shouldn’t be an issue considering it’s designed for small workgroups.
The pop-up is particularly helpful, providing toner status in gauges and links to the user guide and to order supplies.
Users can proactively access the embedded web server (via the IP address or, on the Samsung tab of the driver interface, the Printer Status button) to view status. Remaining life of toner and the transfer unit are indicated by color-coded gauges with text, and users can also see the number of impressions made with, and the rated yield of, each cartridge and the belt. Other consumables, including the fuser and waste container, show, in text, the number of pages used and the rated yield.

On the homepage of the embedded web server, users can see paper status displayed in text such as Ready or Empty, as well as media type and size loaded. Status of the output tray is also shown in text.
Via the embedded web server, administrators can establish email alerts for a handful of conditions, including when service is required or a new firmware update has been issued, to be sent to designated personnel. Two lists with multiple email addresses can be maintained.
Similar feedback information provided in SyncThru Web Service can be accessed through the fleet management utility or Samsung Easy Printer Manager; the same is true of configuring email alerts. Samsung Printer Diagnostics is another tool that users can open to view device and toner status for multiple Samsung devices.
While Printer Status doesn’t offer taskbar alerts, users can receive them via Easy Printer Manager by clicking the icon. What’s more, the utility discovers all Samsung devices on the network and allows administrators to manage up to 20 of them, thereby eliminating the need to have multiple tools loaded.
EASE OF NETWORK SETUP VERY GOOD
Physical setup is straightforward as the unit comes fully assembled (the optional drawer wasn’t tested). Due to size and weight concerns, Samsung recommends two people lift it out of the box and place it in the desired location. Packaging materials aren’t exces-sive. Starter print cartridges (rated yields, 2,000 and 1,500 pages for black and each color, respectively) are preinstalled; users must take them out to remove the protective seals and can then reinsert them.

The disc launches when inserted in the drive, the IP address is assigned and the port is created, all automatically; the unit auto-detects optional accessories. Via the default routine, it takes seven clicks to install the PCL, SPL and scan drivers, Easy Printer Man-ager and two other pieces; users will be up and running in a matter of minutes.
Administrators can perform remote installation of drivers onto multiple PCs with Sync-Thru Web Admin Service.
One-to-one and one-to-many cloning are achieved through the embedded web server and the fleet management utility, respectively; this function can only be done with devices in the same family, which is common.
SyncThru Web Admin Service and the UPD can be downloaded from Samsung’s website.
PRINT DRIVERS EXCELLENT
The unit comes with PCL 5c/6 drivers and the proprietary SPL driver, all of which are com-patible with Windows and Mac operating systems, as well as environments running Linux or UNIX. There’s just one interface for the drivers, between which users can toggle.
The main screen of the interface includes preset settings for frequently programmed jobs and allows users to save their own, thereby reducing feature selection to a single click. Otherwise, users will have to navigate the driver (duplex and orientation are on the Basic tab, while quantity and paper size are on the Paper tab). Graphical changes in the top right corner show when specific features have been selected.

COLOR/BLACK PRINT QUALITY VERY GOOD
Business graphics output exhibited average consistency of solids and sharpness of fine detail, with well-produced pastel shades, clearly defined backgrounds and vibrant colors in charts and graphs. Photographic images were sharp and had the full range of halftones, with average smoothness, while flesh tones were slightly yellowish.
Characters were fully formed and sharp, with average darkness and smooth curves/serifs. Closely spaced fine lines remained distinct and lines were of a consistent thick-ness, while circles and diagonal lines displayed some evidence of breakup and stair-stepping, respectively. No overspray was noticed around text and line art. Grayscale was visible over the entire range, with distinct separation between all levels; halftone coverage was smooth, with minimal banding. Solids were dark and had competitive consistency of coverage.
According to Samsung, its ReCP (Rendering Engine for Clean Page) technology enhances color print quality by producing vivid, sharp and extremely fine images.

COLOR/BLACK PRINT PRODUCTIVITY GOOD
First-print time from overnight sleep is much faster than the average compared with legal-size color laser/LED printer MFPs in this class tested to date.
First-print times for the Word and PDF test files are competitive, as are running speeds when printing sets in all tested full-color and black modes. Running speeds when print-ing BLI’s job stream, which simulates typical traffic in a workgroup, in full-color and black modes are also competitive.
— First-print times for the Excel and PowerPoint files are slower than average.

Efficiency is tested using a 10-page full-color document and a 10-page black document. BLI obtains the overall efficiency for each mode by averaging the efficiency ratings (derived by dividing the tested speed of the device by the rated speed and then multiplying by 100) for each run length (1, 5 and 10 sets). The unit’s efficiency was tested using the PCL driver.

BLI’s job stream includes Word documents, Outlook email messages, Excel spreadsheets, PowerPoint, HTML and Acrobat PDF files, totaling 19 pages. This test simulates the type of traffic a typical device might experience in a real-world, multi-user environment. All of the files are sent to the device as a group, at which time the stopwatch begins; timing ends when the last page of the last file exits the device. Job stream efficiency is determined by the percentage of the rated speed at which the device operates when producing real-world jobs. The closer the rate is to 100%, or if it exceeds 100%, the more efficient the device.
EASE OF USE EXCELLENT
The control panel has two hard keys and three LEDs, one of which is in the Power/Wake Up key. Navigation of the display is made easy as it’s a touchscreen (some devices at this level still offer only a basic LCD). Users can view toner status in the bottom-left corner of the main screen, and the Help function provides good information that‘s listed by specific function.

Users can default the unit to the most environmentally responsible settings through the Eco button on the display.
Adjusting the drawer for different-size media is simple: the length guide slides and the width guides move in sync, once the green tabs have been pressed. To accommodate legal-size paper, users unlock the green tab in the front of the drawer and can then pull out the front of the drawer. And while there’s a spring-loaded ramp that needs to be locked down, there are no corner separators or anything else to make the process of loading paper difficult.
Typical of competitive devices, users must set the new paper size via the display.
Clearing a misfeed from the front of the unit is easy. Consumables don’t have to be removed, and users receive a graphical depiction of the unit on the display, with text instructions (users will have to press a button for each step).
The unit has one misfeed access area in the rear. While it likely won’t be an issue, if the unit is positioned against a wall, it will have to be turned around to clear the jam.
Replacing print cartridges is clean: users simply open the front cover by pressing the button at the front edge of the output tray and can then pull out the consumables assem-bly and remove the spent cartridge without having to unlock anything. Instructions are provided on the display, packaging and inside the cover should guidance be required.
While slots in the assembly are color-coded, they’re not “keyed”; if a cartridge is dropped in the wrong slot, an alert will come up on the display.
Compared with competitive devices tested to date, BLI estimates users will have to replace supplies less frequently than with competitive devices.

User interventions are calculated based on BLI’s average tested toner yields (using the ISO 24712 test target, printed in a semi-continuous mode), as well as the manufacturer’s rated yields for other consumables (drums, developer units, waste containers, etc.). BLI calculates the total number of supplies and maintenance parts that would be required to output 90,000 pages (assumes 2,500 pages per month, which is an average volume for this class of device, over three years). Each individual cartridge or other consumable is counted as one intervention. Long-life maintenance parts, such as fuser kits and rollers, and paper supply replenishments, aren’t included in BLI’s calculations. Depicted scenario is for illustrative purposes only. The actual number of interventions over three years will vary based on a number of factors, including (but not limited to) page coverage, run lengths, usage patterns, periods of inactivity and calibrations performed.

FEATURE SET VERY GOOD
The unit offers a variety of ways to print from mobile devices. A BLI Summer 2013 Outstanding Achievement award winner, Samsung NFC technology allows users to tap an NFC-enabled device to the unit and print, scan or fax files via the Samsung Mobile Print App, which won a BLI Pick in Summer 2012; the app lets users print directly from smartphones, tablets and laptops without the need for additional drivers. Moreover, the unit has native support for Google Cloud Print, allowing users to print from the mobile devices.
The unit is enabled with Samsung XOA-Web, allowing it to run apps such as Samsung AnyWeb Print, which lets users collect and print web content in a customized layout.
Print from USB is standard. When the USB drive is inserted, the USB menu is automati-cally brought up on the display. PDF and JPEG formats are supported (note that other formats appear to be selectable as they’re not ghosted out; an error message will appear on the display if users choose a non-supported format). Users can change a multitude of settings—quantity, color/black, simplex/duplex, paper source, auto-fit—prior to output, but can’t choose to print multiple files simultaneously.
The unit has a standard wireless interface. Media handling from the drawers, at up to 59-lb. bond, is above average compared with legal-size color laser/LED printer MFPs in this class.
Standard (256 MB) and maximum (512 MB) memory capacities are competitive. Stan-dard and maximum paper capacities of 300 and 820 sheets, respectively, are also com-petitive, as is the 50-sheet bypass. Media handling from the bypass, at up to 59-lb. bond, is competitive, too. Output capacity is a competitive 150 sheets. Standard auto-matic duplexing helps reduce waste and lower costs.

Test Environment: This product was tested in BLI’s 10,000-square-foot U.S. test lab, in an environment monitored by an Extech RH S20 Digital RH/Temperature Recorder and Honeywell Model 61 Seven-Day Temperature/Relative Humidity Chart Recorder. All products lab tested by BLI are powered by dedicated circuits that are protected by ESP (Electronic Systems Protection, Inc.) surge protectors to prevent transient power and communication disturbances from impacting equipment under test.
Test Equipment: BLI’s dedicated test network, consisting of Windows 2003 servers, Windows 7 workstations, 10/100BaseTX network switches and CAT5 cabling.
Test Duration: Products are tested for two months, a portion of which consists of a durability test during which the product is run at its manufacturer-rated maximum monthly volume, with varying daily test volumes designed to replicate real-world use over an eight-hour workday. This variable schedule includes a mix of various-size documents, simplex and duplex modes, and a mix of short, moderate and long run lengths, and on/off cycles, throughout the day.
Tested Configuration: Samsung ProXpress C2620DW base unit.
Test Procedures: The test methods and procedures employed by BLI in its lab testing include BLI’s proprietary procedures and industry-standard test procedures, which include a BLI-developed variation of ASTM’s 1318-90 Test Method for Determination of Productivity using Electrostatic Copy Machines. In addition to a number of proprietary test documents, BLI uses an industry-standard KATUN test original for evaluating black image quality and test suites from Quality Logic to evaluate applications compatibility. In addition to a visual observation under a Graphiclite D5000 Standard Viewer, color print quality is tested using a color test target, which is read using the X-Rite Eye-One/iO Color Spectrophotometer, and samples are analyzed using the CIE XY Chromaticity Diagram. In addition, density of black and color output is measured using an X-Rite 500 Series Densitometer. Georgia-Pacific Spectrum Multi-Use 20-lb. bond is used in the tests, 10 percent of which is recycled paper containing 30 percent post-consumer content. Image quality is tested using Georgia-Pacific Printing Paper (96 brightness, 22-lb. bond). Units are tested for compatibility on Windows 7 with Microsoft Office Suite 2010, as well as Adobe Acrobat Reader 10.0.
