LAB EQUIPMENT ACTIVITY

1. I am a piece of apparatus that is used for careful transfer of fluids. I have a wide circular mouth and a slender, hollow tube.

FUNNELFUNNEL

2. I am a glass apparatus that has a wide base and a slender opening at the top. I am often used for titration experiments, or if you can’t seem to find a beaker anywhere. I come in many sizes: 125 mL, 250 mL, and 500 mL

ERLENMEYER FLASK

3. I am a metal heating device that connects to a gas outlet with rubber tubing.

BUNSEN BURNER

4. I am made of wire that has lots of little holes and a ceramic fibre centre. I sit upon a clamp to support glassware as it is being heated. I also function to spread the heat of the flame from the Bunsen Burner.

WIRE GAUZE

5. I have a large, heavy square base which supports my tall, upright cylindrical steel pole. Things become attached to me. I function as a support base. RETORT STAND

6. I am an iron ring with a screw fastener. My function is to fasten to a retort stand as a support apparatus.

RING CLAMP

7. I am made of rubber. My job is to prevent substances from escaping. Sometimes I have holes in me so that glass tubes can be placed inside me.

RUBBER STOPPER

8. I protect your hands by handling hot beakers. I am usually made of metal with a rubber coating for a sure grip.

BEAKER TONGS

9. I am a small device that is used to slowly and carefully transfer small amounts of a liquid. I am usually made out of plastic or glass and I have a small bulb at one end that gently pulls fluid into my slender, hollow tube.

EYE DROPPER

10. I am a small porcelain dish with a lid. I am used to heat small amounts of solids at a high temperature during lab experiments.

CRUCIBLE & LID

11. I am a metal tool that is used to carefully pick up small solid substances. I can also shape your eyebrows, if you like.

TWEEZERS

12. I am made of glass and I am square in shape. I am similar to a plate, but you would NEVER want to eat off me!!

SLIDE

13. I am a dish made of ceramic material, which allows me to become very HOT during heating.

EVAPORATING DISH

14. I am a glass cylinder that is used to mix and stir during an experiment. I am also used when pouring liquids.

STIRRING ROD

15. I am made of metal. I am used to scoop chemicals out of containers.

SCOOPULA

16. We are used to grind substances and always work together to get the job done!

MORTAR & PESTLE

17. I am used to hold a hot glass tube – that’s how I got my name! I take the heat so that your fingers don’t have to.

TEST TUBE RACK

18. I am a glass tube with one open end that scientists use for many purposes. I am used when a beaker is too large.

TEST TUBE

19. I am made of glass. I look a bit like a cup but NEVER drink from me because I am used to hold all kinds of chemicals.

BEAKER

20. I am made of glass and am round and shallow. One side of me is concave while the other side is convex.

WATCH GLASS

21. I can be made of glass or plastic. I am used to measure fluids in the lab. I graduated with Honours from measuring school.

GRADUATED CYLINDER

22. I am made of metal and take care of hot jobs. Always use me to pick up hot test tubes in the lab.

CRUCIBLE TONGS

23. I am triangular in shape and am used to support a crucible over the Bunsen burner.

CLAY TRIANGLE

24. I am made of glass and have a round, bulb-like bottom. I guess I’m almost pear-shaped but I won’t be going to the gym anytime soon – maybe to Italy! FLORENCE FLASK
