What does an article look like?

• Title/Title Page • Abstract • Introduction • Method • Results • Discussion • References

Intro • States what the authors plan to do and why.

– A statement of the problem and why it is important.

– A review of related research literature. Should give theoretical context of the study.

– Give a logical development to the predictions or hypotheses.

In-text citations • Single author:

– (Author, Year) Or Author (Year) found that… • 2 authors:

– (Author1 & Author1, Year) • 3-5 authors

– First time: (Author1, Author2, Author3, … , Year) – After that: (Author1 et al., Year)

A critical reader’s task when reading the intro:

• What is the author’s goal? – Try to figure out which of the several theories the author believes and

which are slated to be tested.

• What hypotheses will be tested in the experiment?

• If I had to design an experiment to test this hypothesis, what would I do?

Structure of the lab today

• Today we will be collecting data for the next 2 lab assignments. – Go no Go Lab Assignment focuses on a prototypical

cognitive task called the Go-No-Go – Personality and Risk Taking Assignment focuses on a

prototypical personality scale and a decision making task that shows individual differences in decision making style.

• We will also talk about some preliminary ideas you need to start thinking about for each assignment.

A Raffle

• Today you will complete 2 tasks where you will earn points (Go-No-Go and the BART).

• At the end of the week, we will total the amount of points you earn between the 2 tasks.

• The top 5 students across all the labs will win a gift card to Starbucks.

Go-No-Go Task

• In experimental psychology we often use computerized behavioral tasks to study a process or construct of interest.

• This lab will investigate a prototypical task called the Go-No-Go task which is often used to measure pre-potent response inhibition.

Pre-potent Response Inhibition

• Well practiced responses occur everyday: • Putting a seatbelt on • Smoking a cigarette • Ordering a favorite food at Taco Bell or McDonalds.

• Sometimes we need to inhibit that response… • Pre-potent Response Inhibition

– Ones ability to inhibit or suppress a well practiced response

– So how can we measure this???

Measuring Pre-potent Response Inhibition

• To measure pre-potent response inhibition we will use the Go-No-Go Task. Next we will show you a demo of the task. – On the next slide you will see a ‘+’ focus on that

‘+’. – Then you will see either an ‘o’ or an ‘x.’ – If you see an ‘o’ hit the table in front of you. – If you see an ‘x’ don’t hit the table.

Summary

• We are interested in pre-potent response inhibition.

• In the Go-No-Go the spacebar is this well practiced response (like you hitting the table) and you must inhibit or suppress the intention to hit the spacebar when you see an x.

Scoring

• There are going to be 2 conditions in the Go No Go Task in which the points you can earn change.

• In one condition:

– 10 points for correctly hitting spacebar after seeing an ‘o’. – 10 point for correctly NOT hitting the spacebar after seeing

an ‘x’. • In the other condition you get

– 1 points for correctly hitting spacebar after seeing an ‘o’. – 20 point for correctly NOT hitting the spacebar after seeing

an ‘x’.

Go-No-Go: Run the experiment

– This is a program that will run the Go-No-Go task on your computer.

– It will open a prompt “Open with ebs2file (default) – Click “Ok” – It may indicate that this is an older version, just click

“Ok”. It will run.

Run the experiment

• Next you will run the experiment. – You can enter 1 for all IDs in the experiment

prompts

• Very important at the end of the task you will get a screen with data. – Just sit quietly and wait for more instructions.

After you are done

• Write down the data from the unbias condition (see screen) – Only when you have all 4 numbers press q

Bias

• In the experiment we manipulated the points for correctly responding: – In the unbias condition you got

Download the BART experiment • Angel Lessons Labs • Click “Lab 3 Data Collection Stuff” • Click “BART” • Download the BART.zip file (press save when

prompted) • Click on the Start menu Documents Downloads • Right click on “bart” and choose “Extract all” • Click “Extract” and click “Yes” a whole bunch • Another window will pop up • Click on “bart” • Click “bart_2_0_10_242ns” • It may indicate that this is an older version, just click “Ok”. It

will run.

Running the BART

• Follow the instructions – You can enter 1 for all IDs in the experiment prompts

After you finish the BART

• Write down the adjusted BART score on the screen. • Press q

• Enter your data in this survey

Individual Characteristics Survey • Angel Lessons Labs Data Collection Stuff

• You will be asked you to come up with your own hypothesis regarding which personality factor(s) will be related to risk taking in the BART.

• To come up with a hypothesis you must conduct a literature search and identify a peer-reviewed journal article that helps support your hypothesis.
