Reflexive verbs are verbs…
• In which the subject both does & receives the action
• i.e. subject=direct object
• I wash my hands• She brushes her hair• He puts on his shoes.• They get themselves dressed.
Reflexive vs. Non-reflexive VerbsBoomerang vs. Frisbee
• When you throw a boomerang, it comes back to you.
• When you throw a frisbee, it either lands on the ground or someone else catches it.
Reflexive vs. Non-reflexive Verbs
*With reflexive verbs, the action is reflected back on the subject, like
a boomerang.
Ex: I washed my hair.
He brushes his teeth.
*With non-reflexive verbs, the action is often received by
someone or something else, like a frisbee.
Ex: He puts on her coat.
She brushes her sister’s hair.
Reflexive or not?
•He washes
the car.
He washes his hands.
They bathe the dog.
She dresses the mannequin.
He gets dressed.
Reflexive Verbs…
• Are shown by the suffix –se
to wash (oneself) = lavarse
to brush one’s teeth = cepillarse
to bathe (oneself) = bañarse
*Notice that many reflexive verbs have to do with your dialy routine.
What does the –se mean?• In English, -self or –selves
Example: She gets herself up in the morning.
The child dresses himself.
*In English, -self or –selves is often implied, not stated.
Example: He bathes (himself).
She sits down (herself).
Reflexive verbs can also be verbs
• In which the emotion occurs within the subject. In English, we often use the words “become/s” or “get/s”
to demonstrate the same meaning.
Examples:• to become/get angry = enojarse• to become/get bored = aburrirse• to become/get sick = enfermarse

CONJUGATING REFLEXIVE VERBS
Conjugating Reflexive Verbs:
*It’s important to note that reflexive verbs conjugate much like the non-reflexive verbs that you have learned so far.
Examples: Yo lavo los platos.
Yo me lavo las manos.
Ellos ponen la mesa.
Ellos se ponen los zapatos.
Marcos levanta pesas.

Conjugating Reflexive Verbs:• Reflexive verbs must have a reflexive pronoun that
corresponds to the subject:
Examples:• Yo me baño.• Tú te lavas.
• Ella se cepilla los dientes.

Conjugating Reflexive Verbs:• In the infinitive form of the verb, the pronoun attaches to
the end. Ex: Ella va a lavarse las manos.
• When the reflexive verb is conjugated, the pronoun appears before the conjugated verb.

Using Reflexive Verbs with the Present Progressive
The reflexive pronoun can go in 2 places:•Before the verb estar
•On the end of the present participle (-ando/iendo)Examples:
Me estoy enojando.
Estoy enojándome.
Nos estamos acostando.
Estamos acostándonos.
*Note that when a pronoun is attached to the end of the present participle, an accent appears on the stressed vowel (3 vowel sounds from the end).

•With affirmative commands, the reflexive pronouns attach to the end:Examples:

•With negative commands, the reflexive pronouns go before the verb.
Examples:¡No te vayas! Don’t go (away)!
¡No se duerman! Don’t fall asleep!
