LOS ESTANCIEROS

Desde los tiempos de la conquista, la corona españolarepartió tierras entre los pobladores de sus colonias.Y hubo quienes, además de conservar esasextensiones, les sumaron otras a través de la ley deenfiteusis de Rivadavia y, muy posteriormente, através de su colaboración en la campaña del desierto.Así, con el tiempo, lograron transformarse en ricosestancieros. Sus estancias, ubicadas en la pampa–palabra derivada del quechua “llanura” o “campoabierto”–, eran tan grandes como todo un paíseuropeo.Entre esos primeros estancieros estuvieron losantepasados de Félix Saturnino de Álzaga Unzué,quien sería el dueño de La Mansión.Hacia 1900, la Argentina alcanzó un extraordinariodesarrollo basado en la producción y exportación dematerias primas. En ese período de opulencia, el paísfue considerado como el “granero del mundo”.

THE RANCHERS

When the Spanish Crown conquered these southernterritories, it was customary for the authorities to distributeland to the inhabitants of their colonies. Some landownersnot only preserved these properties but added to them as well,first by taking advantage of Rivadavia’s law providing forlong-term leaseholds of public lands and then, many yearslater, by collaborating with the Desert Campaign whichhelped to establish the southwest borders of Argentina.Many of these landowners thus became wealthy ranchers.Their ranches, located in the Pampas – a word takenfrom the Quechua language which means “plain” or“prairie” – were sometimes as large as whole Europeancountries. Among these first ranchers were the forefathersof Félix Saturnino de Álzaga Unzué, who, in time, wasto become the owner of La Mansión.By 1900, the production of raw materials in Argentina wasbooming, along with exports; during this period of opulence,the country became known as the “granary of the world.”

These wealthy ranchers first settled in the southern partof the city of Buenos Aires, in the neighbourhood ofMontserrat, in colonial-style houses with two or threepatios. But later, when cholera (1867) and yellow fever(1871) struck, the upper class moved north, to thedistrict known today as Recoleta and Retiro.The so-called Belle Époque, which lasted from around1890 to 1914 in Europe, continued until the early1940s in Buenos Aires. Those were times of grandioseballs, concerts and travel, of luxury and pleasure.High-society Argentine women were beautiful, elegantand sophisticated, dressing in the height of Paris fashionand shopping at all the stylish stores: Madame Vionnet,Jeanne Lanvin, Jeanne Paquin, Worth, Doucet andChanel. They bought bracelets, watches, tiaras andnecklaces at fancy shops on the Place Vendôme, such asCartier, Chaumet and Van Cleef, where the salespeople

Los hombres de las familias más importantes deBuenos Aires combinaban el refinamiento adquiridoen Europa con la sencillez del hombre de campo.Frecuentaban prestigiosas instituciones como elJockey Club y el Círculo de Armas, donde se mezclabanlos negocios y la política. These were clustered betweenthe first few blocks of Alvear Avenue, where La Mansiónof the Álzaga Unzué family was located, and thePalermo Gardens.Upper-class social life revolved around lunches, teas,dinners, concerts, horse races and outings to the parks ofPalermo in horse-drawn carriages or cars.The Colón Theatre, inaugurated in 1908, welcomedboth the famous Russian dancer Nijinsky and therenowned singer of Italian operas Enrico Caruso withstanding ovations, just as it did many otherinternationally renowned stars. The men of these important families combined the refinedmanners and culture they had learned in Europe with thesimplicity of country folk. They frequented prestigiousinstitutions like the Jockey Club and the Círculo deArmas, where business and politics mixed regularly. Not only fashion changed swiftly in Buenos Aires. Locatedbetween the Pampas and the River Plate, between tangoand milonga, the city became the centre of intense culturalactivity which soon extended in all directions. Soon cafés,movie houses, theatres, newspapers and magazines werepopping up everywhere. The city never stopped growing andreceived a continuous influx of immigrants and celebrities.Buenos Aires came to be known as the Paris of South America.

“THE ARGENTINE BIARRITZ”: MAR DEL PLATA

Mar del Plata, considered the top seaside resort inSouth America and known as “the ArgentineBiarritz,” began to flourish in 1866 with the arrivalof the railway. Even the Prince of Wales paid the citya visit. The first luxury hotel was the Bristol, inaugurated in1888. With its casino it was the centre for parties, ballsand social gatherings. The Ocean Club, second to none,was also visited by the “who’s who” of the times. Anothermeeting place was La Rambla, where men and womenshowed off their refined elegance as they strolled theboardwalk.

PARIS WAS A BALL

The fortunes of these ranchers were dedicated to onepurpose: travelling, and more specifically, takingadvantage of the refinement that Paris had to offer. Itwas there they rubbed shoulders with royalty and thecelebrities of the period, while selling their crops andmeat and buying prize bulls. The men even took theirthoroughbreds to compete in the Paris horse races.But with the end of the First World War, in 1918,Europe lay practically in ruins. The world would neverbe the same; the demand for Argentine productscrashed and the protectionist measures taken by thenations of Europe had a severe effect on Argentinelandholders.

“LA BIARRITZ ARGENTINA”: MAR DEL PLATA

La ciudad de Mar del Plata, considerada el primerbalneario de América del Sur y llamada “la Biarritzargentina”, surgió en 1886 con la llegada del ferrocarril.Fue uno de los destinos elegidos por las grandespersonalidades de la época, como el Príncipe de Gales.El primer hotel de lujo de la ciudad fue el Bristol,inaugurado en 1888. Contaba con un casino y era elcentro de todas las fiestas y encuentros. El OceanClub no se quedaba atrás y era frecuentado por el“quién es quién” de la época. Otro punto deencuentro era la rambla, tradicional paseo dondehombres y mujeres mostraban toda su elegancia.

PARÍS ERA UNA FIESTA

Las fortunas de los argentinos tenían señalado undestino: ser invertidas en viajes, especialmente paraapreciar el refinamiento de París. Allí los estancieros secodeaban con la realeza y las grandes personalidades dela época, mientras vendían granos y carne, y adquiríantoros campeones. Además, los estancieros llevaban suscaballos de pura sangre a competir en las carreras deParís. Pero tras el fin de la Primera Guerra Mundial, en1918, Europa quedó prácticamente destruida y, a partirde entonces, el mundo ya no volvió a ser el mismo. Lademanda de productos argentinos disminuyó y lasmedidas proteccionistas de los países europeos causaronun fuerte efecto en los terratenientes argentinos.

ARCHITECTURE AND DÉCOR

All the world’s artistic movements and aesthetic trendsconverged in Buenos Aires. The desire to make theirmagnificent image of the city a reality when constructionboomed at the turn of the century led rich Argentines to“import” French architects and interior designers. There were three types of hôtel particulier, that is,private residence in the French style: the petit hôtellimited by the dimensions of its plot to a small scale; thehôtel, such as the Álzaga Unzué Mansión, animpressive building with large gardens both in frontand in the rear; and finally the grand hôtel, anexample being the Bosch Palace, currently home to theU.S. Embassy in Buenos Aires.Whatever its size, the hôtel particulier always had thesame layout: it consisted of a basement, a ground floorwhere the grand staircase was located, a residentialfloor where the owners had their rooms and finally, atthe top, the attics and mansards.Many of the gardens were done by Carlos Thays, whoseexceptional designs beautified houses, parks andranches.Marble was imported from the Italian quarries atCarrara, from the Pyrenees and from the Massif Centralof France. Additionally, Argentines bought Asian artcollections in Paris, particularly 17th- and 18th- centurypieces: Chinese precious stones, Japanese lacquered objectsas well as porcelains and ceramics.Argentina in the 1930s continued building in the styleof the 1800s, but now with influence from new stylessuch as Art Deco, publicly acclaimed at the 1925Decorative Arts Exhibition of Paris.

ARQUITECTURA Y DECORACIÓN

En Buenos Aires convergían todos los movimientos ytendencias estéticas del mundo. Con el deseo de edificaruna imagen magnífica de la ciudad, florecían lasconstrucciones y se “importaban” arquitectos ydecoradores extranjeros.Había tres tipos de hôtel particulier o residencias: elpetit-hôtel, donde las dimensiones del terreno solopermitían una escala menor en la construcción; el hôtel,como es el caso de La Mansión Álzaga Unzué, unaconstrucción imponente con grandes jardines tanto enel frente como alrededor de la casa; y el grand hôtel,como el Palacio Bosch, actual embajada de los EstadosUnidos. Independientemente de su tamaño, el hôtelparticulier siempre tenía el mismo diseño: un sótano,un piso principal donde se ubicaba la escalera de honor,un piso residencial con las habitaciones de los dueñosde casa y, por último, mansardas o bohardillas.Muchos de los jardines estaban en manos de CarlosThays, quien embelleció casas, parques y estancias consus excepcionales diseños.El mármol era importado de las canteras italianas deCarrara, de los Pirineos y del Macizo Central francés.Además, los argentinos compraban en Paríscolecciones de arte oriental, especialmente de los siglosXVII y XVIII: piedras duras chinas, lacas japonesas,porcelanas y cerámicas.En los años 30, en la Argentina se continuabaconstruyendo bajo el estilo dieciochesco, pero con lainfluencia de nuevas tendencias como el Art Deco,consagrado en la Exposición de Artes Decorativas deParís en 1925.

THE BUENOS AIRES PHILANTHROPIC SOCIETY

In the midst of such frivolous lifestyles, many also felt adesire to help the needy, fostered by their sincere religiousfaith. “All noble Argentines,” it was believed, should

shoulder this responsibility. As a result, wealthycitizens made major donations for the

construction of churches, chapels, hospitals,schools, shelters and soup kitchens.The Philanthropic Society, founded in 1823,was made up of high-society women who

assisted institutions such as the Children’sHospital, the Santa Lucia Hospital, the Casa Cuna

El apellido de Félix Álzaga es de origen vasco. Martín,el primero de sus antepasados en llegar a la Argentina,abandonó España en 1767, a la temprana edad de 12años. En Buenos Aires se dedicó al comercio, primerocomo empleado en el negocio al por mayor de SantaColoma, y luego de forma independiente.Uno de los descendientes de Martín, Félix Gabino, secasó con Ángela Unzué en 1883. Ellos serían lospadres de Félix Saturnino de Álzaga Unzué.Félix Gabino murió en 1919 y dejó una piadosa y bienestablecida familia, la firma Unzué, Álzaga y Cía, variasestancias, 30.000 novillos, 50.000 ovejas y 100.000 vacas.Su entierro fue en el cementerio del Norte, hoy Recoleta.Félix Saturnino, apodado cariñosamente por sufamilia como “Piruco”, nació el 29 de abril de 1885en la casa de la calle Florida 147. Félix de Álzaga’s last name is of Basque origin. Martin,the first of the family to arrive in Argentina in 1767,left Spain at the young age of 12. He worked as abusinessman, first employed by a wholesale companycalled Santa Coloma and later on, independently.One of Martin’s descendants, Félix Gabino, marriedÁngela Unzué in 1883; shortly after, their son FélixSaturnino de Álzaga Unzué was born.When Félix Gabino died in 1919, he left a pious andwell-established family, as well as a company (Unzué,Álzaga y Cia), several ranches, 30,000 heifers, 50,000sheep and 100,000 cows. He was buried in the NorthernCemetery, today known as the Recoleta Cemetery.Félix Saturnino, who went by the family nickname of“Piruco,” was born on April 29, 1885, in the familyhome at 147 Florida Street. Creció enun ambiente refinado y de carácterreligioso, por influencia de sumadre, Ángela.Era apuesto, elegante, distinguido ycon un físico privilegiado para losdeportes. Jugaba al fútbol y a lapelota vasca, y se dedicaba a la esgrima,al remo y a la navegación a vela.Félix inició la carrera de abogacía, perodecidió abandonarla para ocuparse de lasestancias de la familia. Así se hizo cargo de Unzué,Álzaga y Cía, la prestigiosa firma que administraba losbienes familiares. En 1905 se incorporó al JockeyClub, un lugar de reuniones sociales y culturales paralas personalidades destacadas de la clase alta argentina,y un centro que fomentaba el refinamiento de las razasde caballos, considerados fieles compañeros delhombre a lo largo de la historia del país.

free streets, just steps away from where LaMansión would later be built.

At the private Vértiz Institute, where hestudied, he became proficient in Latin

and received an education inaccordance with his social standing.He grew up in a refined and religiousenvironment, the latter thanks to hismother Ángela’s influence.A handsome, elegant anddistinguished youth, he was also very

good at sports: he played soccer andpelota vasca (a Basque game similar to

lacrosse) and excelled at fencing, rowingand yachting.

Although educated in the law, he gave up a legalcareer to manage the family ranches. He thus became

the head of Unzué, Álzaga y Cía, the prestigious companythat administered the family holdings.In 1905, he joined the Jockey Club, a social and culturalmeeting place for Argentina’s distinguished high societyand a centre for the cult of the horse, an animalconsidered man’s faithful companion throughout thehistory of the country.

Elena era hija de Alfredo Peña Lezica y Elena Unzué yBaudrix.Además de asistir a los servicios religiosos, Elena solíaconcurrir a los paseos de Palermo y al hipódromo delJockey Club en compañía de su familia. Elena eratambién conocida por su participación en distintasobras de caridad como hospitales, asilos e iglesias.El primer Peña del que se tiene memoria es Franciscode la Peña, quien se casó con Juana de Ventura y Lezica.Ellos eran los padres de Estanislao Peña, abuelo deElena. Por línea materna, sus abuelos eran Mariano deUnzué y Mercedes Baudrix Barros.Los Unzué son originarios de la región española deNavarra. Francisco de Unzué y Echeverría fue elprimero de la familia en llegar a la Argentina en 1778.La familia Unzué colaboró con la financiación de lacampaña al desierto, encabezada por el general Roca.Entre las propiedades de los Unzué, merece unamención especial la estancia Huetel. Tenía 67.821hectáreas, 400 de las cuales estaban cubiertas porparques y fuentes, estatuas, lago y 400.000 árbolescomo robles, cedros, plátanos y pinos.El Príncipe de Gales, en su visita al país en 1925, se alojóen esa estancia. ELENA PEÑA UNZUÉ

(1892-1982)

Elena was the daughter of Alfredo Peña Lezica andElena Unzué y Baudrix.Besides attending religious services, she accompanied herfamily on outings to Palermo and the Jockey Club Race Track.Elena was also well known for her work with charitiesthat aided hospitals, shelters and churches.The first Peña on record is Francisco de la Peña, whomarried Juana Ventura y Lezica. They were the parentsof Estanislao Peña, Elena’s grandfather. On her mother’sside, her grandparents were Mariano de Unzué andMercedes Baudrix Barros.The Unzués originally came from the Spanish region ofNavarra. Francisco de Unzué y Echeverría was the firstof the family to come to Argentina in 1778.The Unzués helped finance the Desert Campaign, led byGeneral Roca. Particular mention should be made of the Unzués’Huetel Ranch, covering 67,821 hectares, 400 of whichincluded a landscaped park with fountains, statues, alake and 400,000 oak, cedar, pine and plane trees,among other species.When the Prince of Wales visited the country in 1925, hewas a guest at the ranch and as part of the receptionceremonies, he was entertained by none other than CarlosGardel himself.

On May 8, 1916, just a few minutes past 5 o’clock, thedoors of the San Agustín Church swung open and 24-

year-old Elena Peña Unzuéentered. After climbing the sixmarble steps that led to the maindoor, the bride paused for aninstant. Then, accompanied byher father, Alfredo Peña Lezica,she gracefully walked down theaisle to the dazzling main altar,covered in candles, lights andflowers. The bridegroom, Félix de ÁlzagaUnzué, 31 years old and a secondcousin to the bride, waited for herbeside the altar with characteristicpoise and elegance. As Elena entered the church, thecrowd commented on her splendiddress, stylishly tight at the waist,

with a white tulle veil.She walked down the aisle to the Wedding March byWagner, carrying a bouquet of flowers that almostreached the floor. The nuptial cortège, presided over by

Mientras tanto, los fotógrafoscon sus cámaras montadas en trípodes cubrían cadauno de los momentos más destacados.Una placa ubicada en la entrada de la iglesia San Agustínindica que la misma fue donada por la abuela de la novia,la señora Mercedes Baudrix de Unzué, en memoria desu marido, Mariano, el 10 de diciembre de 1910.Mucha gente rodeó a los novios a la salida de laiglesia. Especialmente las señoras se acercaban paraver la distinción de la novia y su vestido.La recepción se realizó en la quinta Unzué y la luna demiel, como imponía la tradición familiar, en laestancia Huetel.Entre la gran cantidad de regalos que recibieron losnovios, había todo tipo de alhajas: pulseras,gargantillas, diademas, brillantes y rubíes. El másimportante fue el de María Unzué de Alvear, quien leobsequió a la novia un diamante de un tamaño solocomparable al famoso Gran Mogol.

Rodolfo Álzaga Unzué and Mercedes Peña Unzué,included fifteen pairs of brothers and sisters and cousins,who accompanied the couple and their best man andbridesmaid. More than 250 guests, seated on fortybenches organised in two groups of twenty in the centralnave of the church, witnessed the moving and solemnceremony, while photographers with their camerasmounted on tripods covered each and every outstandingmoment. A plaque at the church’s entrance reveals that the SanAgustín Church had been donated by the bride’sgrandmother, Mercedes Baudrix de Unzué, onDecember 10, 1910, in memory of her late husband,Mariano.Many people gathered to see the bride and bridegroom asthey left the church; women learned forward for a closerlook at the distinguished bride in her lovely dress. The wedding party was held at the Unzué estate, whilethe newlyweds spent their honeymoon at the HuetelRanch, in keeping with family tradition.Among the many gifts the newlyweds received were allkinds of jewellery: bracelets, necklaces and chokers,diadems, diamonds and rubies. The most important giftwas from María Unzué de Alvear, who gave the bride adiamond comparable in size only to the Great Moguldiamond.

La joven pareja vivió en la casa de los padres deFélix, ubicada en la avenida Alvear 1345, hasta lainauguración de La Mansión, en 1920.Allí gozaban de todos los lujos propios de la época. Enel subsuelo de La Mansión se encontraban las cocinas,el lavadero, el comedor de los veinte empleados y labodega, con vinos como el Château Rothschild. Doslavanderas y dos planchadoras se encargaban de todala ropa, toallas y ropa de cama de la casa. Ademáshabía dos choferes: uno manejaba el Mercedes Benz yel otro conducía el Cadillac.La Mansión contaba además con salas de esgrima y dearmería, acondicionadas en las habitaciones de loshijos que nunca llegaron.

THOSE WERE THE DAYS

The young couple lived at the home of Félix’s parents at1345 Alvear Avenue for four years, until La Mansiónwas inaugurated in 1920.The basement of La Mansión housed the kitchens, thelaundry, the cafeteria for the house’s twenty employeesand the wine cellar, stocked with Château Rothschildand other quality wines. Two women washed all thehousehold clothes and linen, and another two did theironing. In addition, there were two chauffeurs, one forthe Mercedes Benz and one for the Cadillac.Félix practised fencing, one of his personal passions, onthe second floor of La Mansión. The rooms originallyprepared for the children they never had were latertransformed into a fencing hall and an armoury.

En el Salón de Madame había un retrato de Elena,hecho por Philip de László, un pintor húngaroadmirado por las damas de la alta sociedad.Félix y Elena viajaban todos los veranos a Mar delPlata y se alojaban en lo de María Unzué deAlvear, famosa por las deslumbrantes fiestasque ofrecía. Allí concurrían a los bailesde máscaras en el hotel Bristol, acomidas en el restaurante Lavorantey a las carreras que se desarrollabanen el hipódromo. También ibanal Ocean, un club muy exclusivo,y paseaban por la rambla. Por lo general, el matrimoniosolía pasar las mañanas en laplaya, con recatados trajes debaño, al principio en la Bristol y,años más tarde, en Playa Grande.En 1931, la pareja conoció alPríncipe de Gales, Eduardo deWindsor. Había venido con suhermano Jorge, Duque de Kent, yfueron presentados en una de las fiestas deagasajo que se les ofreció en el Golf Club dePlaya Grande. Se volverían a encontrar tiempo mástarde en la fiesta organizada por Concepción Unzuéde Casares en su casa de la avenida Alvear.

A portrait of Elena by Philip de László, the Hungarianpainter in vogue at the time among high-society women,hung in the Salon de Madame.Every summer the couple travelled to Mar del Plata,

where they stayed at the house of María Unzuéde Alvear, famous for her dazzling parties.

They attended the masquerade ballsheld at the Bristol Hotel, the

Lavorante Restaurant dinners andthe races at the hippodrome. Visits tothe very exclusive Ocean Club werefollowed by long strolls along LaRambla. Mornings were spent atthe beach, dressed in bathing suitsthat were anything but revealing– at first Bristol Beach and, inlater years, on Playa Grande.

In 1931, they met Edward, Princeof Wales, who was visiting with his

brother George, the Duke of Kent.They were introduced at one of the

welcoming parties held in honour of theroyal visitors at the Golf Club on Playa Grande.

They met again at a ball organised by ConcepciónUnzué de Casares at her home on Alvear Avenue. Among the many family ranches administered by Félix, hisfavourite was Los Polvorines, but after their yearly stay in

Debido a su excelentegestión, Félix fue reelegido por varios períodos, hastael año 1950. agrega: “Eran unidos y viajaban mucho. Losrecuerdo como dos personas sencillas, afables,francas y muy cariñosas”.

Mar del Plata, the couple would spend part of theirsummer at the San Simón, Santa Clara and San Jacintoranches. Always fascinated by Paris, the couple travelled thereoften, wandering the city’s streets and boulevards. Theyalso attended the Derby de Chantilly, where Félix’s horsescompeted.Félix de Álzaga Unzué, an honourable man, botharistocratic and down-to-earth, became president of theJockey Club in 1934. As a result of his excellentadministration, he was re-elected for several terms, until1950. Elena matched him with her enthusiasm, eleganceand noble spirit.Félix died on the morning of August 29, 1974, and ElenaPeña Unzué died on November 5, 1982. Their remainswere laid to rest in the crypt of Mariano Unzué in theRecoleta Cemetery.

“When I was a child and would visit Félix and Elena’shouse, what really caught my attention were the parrots, thePekinese dogs and the cairn terrier,” remembers CarlosGómez Álzaga, one of the couple’s grandnephews and theirattorney for many years. “They were very close and

travelled a lot. I remember them as twosimple, kind, straightforward

and affectionatepeople.”

Félix de Álzaga Unzué construyó La Mansión comoregalo de bodas a su esposa Elena Peña Unzué.El arquitecto inglés Robert Prentice estuvo a cargo delproyecto.Como se mencionó anteriormente, La Mansión es unamagnífica construcción del tipo hôtel particulier deestilo Beaux Arts. Con gran arraigo en Buenos Aires,este estilo representa el academicismo francéspredominante en las grandes construcciones porteñasentre 1890 y 1940.Fiel testimonio de la cultura francesa en esta ciudad,La Mansión es reconocida como uno de los mejoresejemplos de la arquitectura del Buenos Aires deprincipios del siglo XX.El eclecticismo de la “Belle Époque”, que mezclaestilos como el francés, el inglés y el italiano, se ve muybien reflejado en La Mansión.La construcción comenzó en 1916, a mediados de laPrimera Guerra Mundial, y se terminó poco despuésde que esta guerra finalizara. A faithful testimony to the influence of French culturein this city, La Mansión is recognised as one of the bestexamples of turn-of-the-century architecture inBuenos Aires.La Mansión is also a fine example of Belle Époqueeclecticism, freely mixing French, English and Italianstyles.Construction started in 1916, in the middle of the FirstWorld War, and was finished shortly after the warended. Importing materials was a real challenge, owingto the risk of shipping things by sea. By that time,however, local Italian and Spanish artisans had already

En diciembre de 2001, el Four Seasons Hotel Buenos Airesse hizo cargo de la administración de esta propiedad.Con el transcurso del tiempo, La Mansión Álzaga Unzué,joya arquitectónica emplazada en una de las áreas másexclusivas de nuestra ciudad, vio menguada su preservacióndebido al lógico desgaste de los materiales. Para querecuperara su esplendor, fue necesaria una inversión de másde un millón de dólares.A mediados del año 2007, al iniciarse la restauraciónde La Mansión, se decidió darle un nuevo aspecto a suinterior. Las siete suites, ubicadas en el primero ysegundo piso, y los amplios salones de la recepción dela planta baja fueron redecorados y restaurados por elarquitecto Francisco López Bustos, junto a MarcelaCarvajal y su colaborador Lucas Grande.Los cambios buscaban reflejar la riqueza de una épocade gran opulencia, que revivía a su vez, el estilo delsiglo XVIII.En palabras de López Bustos: “El lujo del siglo XVIII,visto a través de los ojos del siglo XX”.Una de las primeras ideas para decorar las habitacionesfue trabajar los espacios con texturas para que crearanun clima de época. Cortinas, tapizados, baldaquinos yparedes se vistieron con sedas estampadas, chiffon, toilesde Jouy, broccatos, damascos y panas. “Estos, engeneral, responden a un esquema de colores muyestricto y a la vez clásico, pero en principio se utilizaronlos tonos claros”, dice el arquitecto.

But as time passed, thebuilding materials had deteriorated, and an investmentof over $1 million was required to restore it to its originalsplendour. In mid-2007, when the restoration commenced, thedecision was made to redesign the interior, and so thespacious ground-floor reception lounges and seven suiteson the first and second floors were fully restored andredecorated by the architect Francisco López Bustos,along with Marcela Caravajal and her assistant LucasGrande.The intention was to reflect the wealth of an age of greatopulence, which, in turn, was a recreation of 18th-century style. López Bustos describes it as “the luxury ofthe 18th century, seen through the eyes of the 20th.”One of the first concepts, particularly in the guest rooms,was to give the spaces textures that would generate theatmosphere of the period. Curtains, upholstery, bedcanopies and walls were dressed in patterned silks,chiffons, toiles de Jouy, brocades, Damascus silks andvelours. “These fabrics generally follow a strict and classiccolour scheme, but light tones were used here primarily,”says the architect.Original materials were restored: stuccos, oak floors,wood panelling, gold leaf finishings, special pieces of
