Greetings from the La JollaChristmas Parade and Holiday Festival Volunteers

Welcome to the 56th annual La JollaChristmas Parade and Holiday Festival,“Christmas in the Surf and Sand” — thefirst one sponsored by the newly formednonprofit La Jolla Christmas Parade andHoliday Festival Foundation. On Sunday,Dec. 8 at 2 p.m., the parade route begins atGirard and Kline, travels down Girard toProspect Street, then turns left to finish atthe La Jolla Recreational Center. with theHoliday Festival begins with the AntiqueAircraft Association performing its tradi-tional flyover of the Village and paraderoute. We have more than 90 entrantswith dozens of floats, bands, marchingunits, equestrians, and unique and vin-tage vehicles. Abdullah the camel, fireengines and an antique police paddywagon will add to the fun.

In honor of their 50th year, we haveselected the WindanSea Surf Club andtheir local champions as the grand mar-shals to lead the parade. Keeping with ourtradition of honoring individuals whohave made major contributions to thecommunity, this year we honor Claudia

and Bill Allen (traditional marshals), Sher-ry Ahern (philantrophic marshal), TylerOrion (innovation marshal) and the Mt.Soledad Memorial Association, represent-ed by Bruce Bailey. Students selected fromlocal schools for their exceptional serviceto the community will join the parade asyouth marshals.

It is a great day to spend in the Villagewatching the parade assemble and traveldown Girard and Prospect, and enjoyingthe Holiday Festival afterwrd. This year’sfestival will feature entertainment, airjumps, games and educational activitiesfor the kids, and as a special treat, photoswith Santa, made possible by SunriseRotary. The festivities will finish with aChristmas tree lighting ceremony, featur-ing the large tree at the La Jolla Recreationcenter, which was planted years ago andcontinues to be decorated each year, cour-tesy of GDC Construction.

As you enjoy your day in La Jolla, avoid‘Mall Mania’ and shop and dine with ourlocal merchants, who will all be open toserve you. Shopping, dining and loungingis made easy with lots of parking availableso everyone can enjoy our seaside jewel.

Check the parade website (ljpa-rade.com) for current information aboutthe parade, including maps, parking, street closures, and parade day schedulewith links to our sponsors and donors whomake the parade possible. A list of partici-pants in the parade is also on the website,so check it to find people you know andthen come out and have some fun watch-ing them travel the parade route!

Special thanks go to the ChristmasParade and Holiday Festival Committee, avery small group of dedicated and cheerfulvolunteers. It has been a privilege to workwith for them over the past 16 years, andsome have been volunteering for morethan 25 or 30 years! The Christmas

Parade and Holiday Festival would not bepossible without their many efforts, fromhelping raise funds to making sure allentrants have a fun and safe experience.

A special thanks to Pat Wells, who is thehub of the parade, cheerfully working thespectrum of tasks and keeping us allinformed. It has been a privilege to workwith the committee that is dedicated tomakinge the 2013 Christmas Parade andHoliday Festival the best ever!

The parade could not happen withoutthe sponsorships and donations receivedfrom local businesses and residents.Audrey Geisel and the Dr. Seuss Founda-tion continue to be our largest sponsor, with Merrill Lynch and La Jolla Manage-ment joining for the first time as majorsponsors. We are grateful for the contin-ued support from the County of SanDiego, Ron Roberts, The Florence RifordFund, Kiwanis, Rotary and the manysponsorships and contributions receivedfrom local businesses and residents.

Many thanks to Debbie Dorsee of theDorsee Company for stepping in to helpraise funds. Support for the 2013 editionof this event has been especially wonderful— by far the most in the event’s 56-yearhistory.

Our volunteers work countless hours toorganize this event, but the communityappreciation and support makes it allworth it. Many thanks to our loyal mer-chants and residents who have been sup-porting the parade throughout its history.

We hope you enjoy this 56th install-ment of a rich community tradition.Happy holidays!

La Jolla Christmas Parade Program4 FRIDAY · DECEMBER 6, 2013LA JOLLA TODAY

It was surf competition in the early 1960sthat gave birth to the Windansea Surf Club, asthe growth of surfing spawned contests tocompare skills up and down the CaliforniaCoast. One of the biggest surf events in Califor-nia at the time was the Surf Club Competitionat Malibu Surfrider Beach.

In 1963, Chuck Hasley, who had moved toSan Diego and opened a surf shop in PacificBeach for Hobie Alter, was talking to Skip Frye,Mike Hynson and Billy Caste about theupcoming Malibu contest, and they decidedto recruit a team to surf under the Windanseabanner. Although they only had a loose con-nection to the previous club, Chuck guessedcorrectly that some of the L.A. surfers wouldremember the past luaus and figure that theywere an established surf club. Then the clubgathered a team of surfers consisting of Joey

Cabell, Robert and Ramón Patterson, DaveWillingham, I.J. Richards, Skip Frye, MikeHynson, Del Cannon, Chuck Hasley, ButchVan Artsdalen and Rusty Miller and piled intoa rented bus in Pacific Beach and arrived atMalibu to dominate the contest.

After that, word of mouth spread quickly, and the club kept recruiting the most talentedsurfers on the West Coast, adding to the clubroster the names of Miki Dora, Mike Doyle,Phil Edwards, Donald Takayama, MickeyMunoz, David Nuuhiwa, Corky Carroll andyoung women surfers like Linda Benson,Margo Godfrey-Oberg and Debbie Beacham. In 1965, under the guidance of executivedirector Thor Svenson, the club was incorpo-rated as a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization withthe stated goals of “promoting the sport ofsurfing and the positive image of surfers as

athletes and good citizens, through the spon-sorship of competitive surfing events andcharitable community activities.” We thenestablished an international presence withHawaiian, Mexico and Australian branches ofthe club. Members traveled to the South Pacif-ic and Australia to compete in contests andstar in surf films of the day.

Philanthropic Marshal

SherryBerman AhernSherry Ahern was

born in Detroit, Michi-gan and moved with herfamily to San Diego in1960. From her earliestyears, she motivated andinspired others to giveback to the community. When she was 10, sheenlisted her friends to

put on shows at the Hebrew Home for theAged, where her grandmother, Alice, was aresident. She attended San Diego State Uni-versity, majoring in political science. Sherrymet her husband, Kevin, in La Jolla in 1985,where they have lived and brought up theirtwo children, Brianna and Brendan.

Sherry has dedicated her life to giving back. She was a full-time volunteer for the HelenWoodward Animal Center for 10 years. Withher foundation she created The Fling, theiryearly gala, where she became the head ofunderwriting. This gala has raised millions ofdollars and continues to succeed.

Sherry joined the Board of Friends of LaJolla Elementary School 22 years ago. TheBoard is the nonprofit foundation of La JollaElementary School, where her children werestudents. She has been involved in manyfundraising events for the school but, mostnotably, founded the La Jolla Open AireFarmer’s Market in 1998 the year both of herchildren left for middle school. The marketcontinues to be a staple in the community. Ithas grown to be the largest farmer’s market inSan Diego County, with over 200 vendors, andhas raised over $2 million to help fund muchneeded programs at the school. Sherry washonored with the 10 Leadership Award in1999 after starting the Market.

Unfortunately, in 2000, Sherry’s son, Bren-dan, was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. Inproper Sherry fashion, she and her husbanddidn’t waste any time getting involved in thediabetes community and finding out how theycould help. Later that year, she joined thedevelopment board of the Whittier Institutefor Diabetes. For 10 years, she was the auctionchair for their annual fundraiser. Workingwith her husband, who served on the Board ofTrustees, Sherry helped to raise money forresearch towards the cure of Type 1 diabetes. She and her husband continue their efforts tofind a cure; they are currently on the foundingboard of the DRC, Diabetes Research Connec-tion.

In 2001, Sherry was elected as a trustee tothe La Jolla Town Council, where she servedthe community for three years. She and herhusband also helped raise funds for FrancisParker School, where their son attended mid-dle and high school. In 2008 she joined thefounding board of the La Jolla Community

Center and helped create the first adult com-munity center in the area. Also in 2009, Sher-ry founded the La Jolla Art & Wine Festival, ajuried art show in downtown La Jolla with allproceeds going to four local public schools- LaJolla Elementary, Bird Rock Elementary, TorreyPines Elementary, and Muirlands MiddleSchool. From the beginning it was a great suc-cess and each year has grown. It is now part-nered with the La Jolla Village Merchant’sAssociation and takes place throughout thestreets of the Village.

Sherry has also helped raise money forSouthern Methodist University, from whichboth of her children graduated. With her ded-ication to her family and her community, it isno surprise that in April 2012 Sherry washonored with City of Hope’s Mother of theYear Award. In April 2013 Sherry receivedthe Woman of dedication award from the Sal-vation Army, and in May 2013 received vol-unteer of the year from The La Jolla Kiwanisgroup. Her energy and passion for helpingothers is an inspiration to all of us. Her enthu-siasm is only matched by her incredible ener-gy. No one who meets her fails to comment onher ability to keep going and accomplish enor-mously difficult tasks. Everyone is proud ofthe work she has done in her life. We havemuch to look forward to with Sherry Ahernconfidently taking on her next big project!

GDC CONSTRUCTION and president Pancho Dewhurst have been donating theirtime and equipment to decorate the La Jolla Christmas tree at the La Jolla Rec Center forthe past 10 years. Pancho’s father George Dewhurst planted the tree in 1984 when hefounded the La Jolla Sunrise Rotary Club. As president of the La Jolla Sunrise RotaryClub, George Dewhurst’s first community project was to plant the La Jolla Christmastree and decorate it annually. As chairman of the parade, George came up with the ideaof ending the parade at the La Jolla Recreation Center for a Christmas party and light-ing ceremony. George's father, Walter Dewhurst, started the parade in 1950s. Georgeand Pancho have both been the chairs and co-chairs over the years.

ABOUT THE COVER PHOTO:

The La Jolla coastline has always been an inspirational focal point for me with my pho-tography. I remember as a little boy going to Windansea and playing by the shack in theearly ’70s. I have always been drawn back to this beautiful beach to capture images andspecially the Windansea Shack. The Shack is near and dear to the whole communityand represents decades of stories. The WindanSea Surf Club has been maintaining theshack over the years always making sure it is clean and picture worthy.

La Jolla Christmas Parade Program 17FRIDAY · DECEMBER 6, 2013LA JOLLA TODAY

Time is in short supply during theholiday season. Between shopping, cooking, baking and wrapping, thereseem to be precious few hours totackle anything else. Those whodesire an old-fashioned, homemadeholiday can still experience all of theseasonal magic by deferring some ofthe work to local businesses.

DECORATING — Much of thesplendor of the holiday season comesdirectly from the intricately decorat-ed houses and storefronts. Twinklinglights and garlands of fresh pineboughs can instantly transform anybuilding. Decorating a home cantake an entire day or more, but dele-gating the work to a decorating ser-vice will provide you with profession-al-looking results, as well as free timeto tackle other obligations. Decorators canwork outdoors stringing lights and creating awinter wonderland in the fraction of the timeit takes homeowners to decorate their homes.

BAKING — What would the holiday seasonbe without the sweet treats and inviting smellsof freshly baked goods? Local bakeries likeGirard Gourmet or Cups experience anupswing in business this time of year as shop-pers flock to choose among the pastries, cup-cakes, cookies and pies. Whether a dessertcomes directly from your kitchen or that of

one of La Jolla’s top-notch bakeries, chancesare guests will enjoy each delectable bite.Don’t forget to order early, as the popularshops become more so this time of year.

CATERING — Roasts and lavish tables arepart of the holiday season, but so are the cor-porate parties and cocktail events that com-prise a social season. Catering a party is aneasy way to offer guests delicious food withminimal work, and La Jolla has no shortage oftop-of-the-line caterers like Guiseppe FineCatering and, again, Girard Gourmet. Some

restaurants that do not normally cater eventsmay offer special packages this time of year.Contract with a preferred caterer early on toguarantee you can benefit from their services.

PARTIES — Social calendars fill up comeNovember and December. When hosting agathering of coworkers, family or friends, choose local venues for social events so trav-el to and from the party is easier on guests.Parties can take place anywhere, includingmovie theaters, bowling alleys, wine storesand indoor floral nurseries. Some of La Jolla’shotels, like Hotel La Jolla, offer specials on hol-iday parties, while the community certainlyhas no shortage of art galleries that make per-

fect spaces for a classy event.GIFTING — Shopping at local vendors

often means more personalized service and aless stressful experience. A specialty store —Adelaide’s, The Cave Store, Warwick’s andJewels by the Sea are just a few of what LaJolla has to offer — may have that unique giftnot easily found elsewhere, and shop ownersmay be able to special-order bulk gifts. Small-er retailers may also offer specialized services, such as gift-wrapping or personal shopping.

Support La Jolla this holiday season bykeeping your holiday spending in the com-munity.

Short on time this holiday season? Shopping local can helpFESTIVE SPENDINGShopping local hasmore than one benefit. Not only are you keep-ing your holiday moneyin the community, but itcan actually save youtime. Local merchantscan help with that holi-day party or cocktailevent, and local catererscan create the perfectmenu no matter what theevent. Shop owners, meanwhile, often offerunique gifts you won’tfind anywhere else.

This place is fantastic! My fiance went here to buy a tux for himself and to look for rentals for our upcoming wedding. At first we didn’t want to go here because we figured, being in Birdrock, it would bemore on the expensive side. After a terrible experience at another tuxedo shop, we decided to give A Better Deal a try. I am SO happy we did! Not only was the experience far better than where we had been, but the quality of tuxedos are fantastic, and they ended up being cheaper for his groomsmen to rent! Score!

We also had a hiccup and had to push back the wedding after we went in for our first appointment. WhenI called to explain, they were so accomodating and even let us come back to try on different tuxes monthslater even though we had already purchased a tux and it had come in.

I can’t reccomend this place enough. If you are looking for quality service, quality tuxedos, and great prices, check this place out!!
