The 57th Annual La Jolla Christmas Parade& Holiday Festival begins at 1:30 pm Sunday,December 7, on Girard Avenue at Kline Streetand proceeds to the La Jolla Recreation Centerand the start of the Holiday Festival. Thisyear’s Parade, “Spirit of Christmas – Peace onEarth" attracts more than 20,000 attendees.We expect more than 2000 participants – withmost returning each year to continue this Vil-lage tradition. Our event is organized and con-ducted by volunteers, and funded throughcommunity sponsorships and donations.

This event is organized by the La Jolla Christ-mas Parade and Holiday Festival Foundation,a 501c(3) non-profit organization. This yearthe Foundation is fortunate to have two greatHonorary Co-Chairs, Bill Kellogg and JackMcGrory.

The Parade begins with the Antique Air-craft Association performing their traditionalFlyover of the Village and Parade Route. Ourlargest Parade ever with over 100 entries willproceed down the Parade route. Accompany-ing our 6 Parade Marshals are Floats, Bands,Beauty Queens, Canines, Marching Units,Equestrians, Miscellaneous and Vintage Vehi-cles, Abdullah the Camel, Fire Engines, andan antique Police Paddy Wagon. Keeping withour tradition of honoring individuals or orga-nizations that have made major contributionsto the community, we honor Annette Brad-bury and Cari Massaad representing LasPatronas, Grand Marshal leading the parade.Others being honored are Phyllis Minnick,Civic Marshal, Tom Goodman, Education Mar-shal, Greg McKee, CONNECT, Innovation Mar-shal, Doug Fitzgerald, Sports Marshal, andSteve Kappes and the Military Outreach TennisTeam, Military Marshal.

Enjoy a great day in the Village watchingthe parade assemble and travel down Girardand Prospect and attending the Holiday Festi-

val at the Rec Center. The Festival includes anEntertainment Stage, air jumps, face painting,games and educational and interactive activi-ties for the kids, and as a special treat – photoswith Santa, made possible by Sunrise Rotary.The Festival ends with the Lighting of theChristmas Tree by Doug Fitzgerald, our SportsMarshal and Chair of the LJ Rec Center Advi-sory Board. The Tree was planted over 25years ago and has been decorated each year byGDC Construction.

As you enjoy your day in La Jolla, avoid ‘MallMania’ and shop and dine at our local mer-chants who will all be open to serve you forshopping, dining, lounging – with lots of park-ing available, making it is easy to wander theVillage enjoying our seaside ‘jewel’. TheChristmas Parade and Holiday Festival wouldnot be possible without their many efforts,from helping raise funds to making sure allentrants have a fun and safe experience, mak-ing my job so much easier. A special thanks toPat Wells who is the 'hub' of the parade. AsParade Administrator she is responsible forregistration, administration of all aspects ofthe parade, coordinating and answering thou-sands of emails and phone calls and creatingand maintaining our parade database. MikeCarlin, Parade Director, keeps us safe while

having fun and sets a high standard for anefficient and unmatched operation. CynthiaAdams-Carlin, coordinating beauty queens,bands, marching units and prepares our oper-ational lineup files. Brother Steve Carlin is anessential Parade Day official insuring safetyalong parade route and especially the end-of-parade 'chaos'. Along with the Carlins, DaveIrwin, Gail Forbes and Carol Burchard andCharlene Boyl have been working over 20years to keep our tradition going. Annette andTerry Buis host our meetings with wonderfulhospitality and pitch in to make banners andwork Miscellaneous and VIP Vehicles. On apersonal note I am grateful to our webmaster(my son David Bache) who creates the website,registration software and other tools. This is his8th year, streamlining our operation moreeach year.

Education Marshal

Tom Goodman Tom Goodman served with honor as Super-

intendent of Schools for both San Diego Cityand Santa Clara County, bringing a wealth ofeducational experience to the role. His execu-tive leadership in this guise revealed a gen-uine passion for mentoring students and fos-tering educational success.

In his long tenure, Tom improved qualityinitiatives and played a lead role in negotiatingthe complex requirements of Federal testingstandards. Tom's stellar career includes arobust history of youth community service,including a focus on reaching at-risk youth.

Tom spends much time today on variouscommunity service roles in La Jolla, andenjoys traveling with his wife Cindy.

Innovation Marshal

Greg McKeeGreg McKee brings nearly 30 years of expe-

rience in the healthcare, investment manage-ment and investment banking industries toCONNECT. He was co–Founder of Global BioLink, a global Specialty Pharma companyfocused on the commercialization of novel andniche compounds in markets outside the Unit-ed States. Prior to Global Bio Link, he wasChairman and CEO of Akela Pharma Inc. andits predecessor company, Nventa Biopharma-ceuticals. Previously, Greg held roles as HeadCorporate Development, Valentis, Inc., andSenior Management roles with Genzyme Cor-poration in the US and Asia. Greg lived andworked in Japan and in Singapore for nineyears and speaks fluent Japanese.

All funds raised by Las Patronas stay in SanDiego County and are distributed to many smallgrass-root nonprofits as well as larger, more vis-ible organizations. By giving to Las Patronas, acompany or individual diversifies its philan-thropic giving – reaching children and seniors,the homeless and the disabled, emergencyresponse teams and the military as well as sup-porting scientific research, health services, theenvironment and cultural arts – in a broad geo-graphical range throughout San Diego.

Civic Marshal

Phyllis Minick Phyllis Minick presently operates PM Publi-

cation Consultants in her work as a writer,editor, and educator in the biomedical field.Previously, for 19 years, she was Head, Edito-rial Office, at The Scripps Research Institute(formerly Scripps Clinic and Research Founda-tion) in La Jolla, California. Responsibilitiesincluded preparing medical research texts forpublication and grant submission, full chargeof publishing the Annual Scientific Report,and writing patient information and othertechnical documents. During that time andafterward, she taught writing workshops forscientists, nurses, and engineers.

Ms. Minick was the President (1994-95) ofthe international professional organization,American Medical Writers Association. Shewas on the AMWA Executive Board for 12years and a member of the Core Curriculumfaculty. She was elected to the position ofAMWA Fellow in 1987. She edited and coor-dinated publication of the two-volume AMWAbook, Biomedical Communication: SelectedAMWA Workshops – Core Curriculum cours-es presented at AMWA conferences and writ-ten by the course leaders. Presently, she is aregular contributor to the AMWA Journal’sfreelance columns.

Other professional organizations withwhich she has been affiliated include Societyfor Technical Communications, (President,San Diego chapter for two years), Council ofScience Editors, and Teachers of TechnicalWriting. As a community activist, she was

Treasurer of La Jolla Parks & Beaches, Inc.(2011 – 2014) and remains a member of theboard and Chair of the Beautification Commit-tee. In the latter capacity, Ms. Minick initiatedand heads the Children’s Pool Walk Project, arenovation and upgrade of the access area toour world-famous ocean pool. She is also amember of Friends of the Children’s Pool, theLa Jolla Community Planning Association, theLa Jolla Town Council, and La Jolla Kiwanis. InFall, 2014, she will publish (with co-editorAnn Ellis) Kiwanis Cooks, a book of recipesfor sale to raise funds and awareness for Kiwa-nis-supported, childrens’ charities. She willalso edit the annual Kiwanis special edition ofthe La Jolla Light.

Formerly, as a Red Cross Certified WaterSafety Instructor, she taught swimming in theBackyard Swim program. Her NAUI certifica-tion in SCUBA enabled her to work once-weekly for six years in the Kelp HabitatImprovement Project of Cal Tech ProfessorWheeler North as a volunteer diver. For ReadSan Diego, a program of the San Diego PublicLibrary, she conducted writing and readingworkshops as part of their low literacy adultprogram.

Ms. Minick graduated from University of Cal-ifornia, Los Angeles, with a B.A. in the Schoolof Letters, Arts, and Sciences and received anM.A. in Curriculum and Instruction from theUniversity of San Diego, California.

Ms. Minick has two children son Scott, CEOof Bind Therapeutics in Boston (wife Beth),and daughter Ricky, professional consultantfor Singapore Math (husband Steve) and fourgrandchildren, Katy, Jay, David & Michelle.

SportsMarshal

Douglas FitzgeraldDoug has been the President of La Jolla

Parks & Recreation Inc. for the past four years.As Tennis Ambassador of the La Jolla Beachand Tennis Club, Doug brings his mastery ofthe game to the courts year-round. CurrentPresident of the Umpire's Association and for-mer President of La Jolla Tennis Club, Doughas improved the skills of generations of LaJolla's players. Doug began his career as a U.S.

Navy tennis player in the Western Pacific/FarEast Theatre from 1966-69. From there hetaught tennis over 30 years in Massachusetts,Michigan and California from 1969-2000.Doug also worked as an Official with the Unit-ed States Tennis Association beginning in1969, and in that guise called matches forwell known players like Bjorn Borg, Billie JeanKing, Martina Navratilova, Guillermo Vilas,Ilie Nastase, and many more in such venues asthe US Open, Davis Cup and other profession-al tournaments across the US. Doug hasrecently retired from officiating, and is nowhonored with with Umpire Emeritus andUSTA Lifetime Umpire Awards.

Military Marshal

Captain Steve Kappes,U.S. Navy, Retired

Steve is a former career Navy Officer whoserved around the world, afloat and ashore. Aveteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom and many

other campaigns he is currently a ProgramManager for KAB Laboratories, a San Diego-based software and systems engineering firmserving the Department of Defense and othergovernment clients.

A recreational tennis player for over 30years, currently the President of the non-prof-it San Diego District Tennis Association, thelocal arm of the U.S. Tennis Association(USTA). He also serves on the Board of Direc-tors of the Southern California Tennis Associ-ation. At the national level, he serves on theUSTA’s Adaptive Tennis Committee, and is amember of the USTA’s Military OutreachTeam. Steve is also a certified tennis instruc-tor.

As the Founder and Chairperson of the SanDiego District’s Military Outreach Committee,he spearheaded many programs that haveimproved the quality of life for thousands ofmilitary members and their families, includingrunning tennis clinics on bases throughoutsouthern California, raising funds for educa-tional scholarships for military spouses andchildren, and sending hundreds of care pack-ages to California-based troops serving in Iraqand Afghanistan.

In addition, he co-founded and leads a freetennis-based rehabilitation program that hasserved over 600 Wounded, Ill, and Injuredservice members, veterans and caregivers.The program has been recognized by seniorDepartment of Defense officials for its excel-lence and impact, has been featured in nation-al media, and has become the model for simi-lar programs that have been established atmajor military medical centers and WarriorTransition Units across the country.

For his service to military members, veter-ans, and their families through tennis, Stevereceived the Navy Region Southwest “Fleet-Fighter-Family Champion Award” in 2012,was nominated as the 2012-2013 San DiegoCounty Veteran of the Year, and received the10 News / LEAD San Diego Community Lead-ership Award in 2014.

Since 2009, the San Diego DistrictTennis Association, in collaborationwith Balboa Tennis Club and NavalMedical Center San Diego (NMCSD),has provided hundreds of free weeklytennis clinics and three annualnational tennis camps to more than600 wounded, ill, and injured service

members and veterans from all themilitary services as part of NMCSD’sWounded, Ill, and Injured WellnessDivision of its Health and WellnessDepartment.

the Department of Defense, VeteransAdministration and the United StatesTennis Association for their excellenceand impact, and are the model for sim-ilar tennis programs for wounded, ill,and injured service members and vet-erans that have been established atother major military medical centers,

Warrior Transition Units, and VA hos-pitals across the country.

The Wounded Warrior Tennis Pro-gram has made a positive impact inthe lives of wounded, ill, and injuredservice members and veterans. Thera-peutically, tennis has helped themimprove their strength, endurance,

balance, ability to transfer weight, eye-hand coordination, and overall fitness.In addition to the physical benefits,tennis enables them to learn a newsport, promotes socialization, decreas-es stress and anxiety, and helps withre-integration into the community.

For four generations, GDC Construction has been turn-ing visions into reality. Much more than your typicalbuilders, GDC’s principals have a deep interest in art anddesign that is reflected in the exquisite homes and business-es they have completed throughout La Jolla and beyond.Pancho’s father George planted the famous La Jolla Christ-mas tree at the La Jolla Rec. Center with the help of La JollaSunrise Rotary and with them GDC has decorated the treeevery year since!

This year the Christmas Parade and Holiday FestivalFoundation and Sunrise Rotary requested and were grant-ed an award from the LJ Recreation Center Advisory Boardto replace the aging decorations and lights in preparationfor the 100th Anniversary celebration of the Rec Center.Jim Poirier led the Sunrise Rotary effort to fund and prunethe tree to ready it for its part in the 2014 Festival Celebra-tion.

George Dewhurst of GDC Construction came up withthe idea of planting a Christmas Tree over 25 years ago anddonated the Tree and Decorations – Pancho Dewhurst, ofGDC Construction has maintained the family tradition ofgenerously donating decorations and the cost of decorat-ing the Tree each year.

Dave Irwin, erstwhile Carpenter, is float coordinator anda member LJ Sunrise Rotary – he's helping cut costs buycutting out the Seahorse ornaments designed by LauraMcDonald who created the ornament concept along withPancho Dewhurst of GDC Construction. Gemini Construc-tion donated the materials for Dave Irwin to create theseahorses. Baja Silkscreen painted and decorated them.Gail Forbes led an effort with some of the members ofAquaballo to wire the seahorses, star and other ornamentsthat are on the tree.

along with other decorations. The Tree which had a specialpruning by a professional arborist, courtesy of SunriseRotary, was decorated after the rain stopped and will be liton December 7th ending the Festival and beginning the100th Anniversary Celebrations.

Don’t forget to order early,as the popular shops become more so this timeof year.

CATERING — Roasts and lavish tables arepart of the holiday season, but so are the corpo-rate parties and cocktail events that comprise asocial season. Catering a party is an easy way tooffer guests delicious food with minimal work,and La Jolla has no shortage of top-of-the-linecaterers like Guiseppe Fine Catering and, again,Girard Gourmet. Some restaurants that do notnormally cater events may offer special pack-ages this time of year. Contract with a preferredcaterer early on to guarantee you can benefitfrom their services.

PARTIES — Social calendars fill up comeNovember and December. When hosting agathering of coworkers, family or friends,choose local venues for social events so travel toand from the party is easier on guests. Parties

can take place anywhere, including movie the-aters, bowling alleys, wine stores and indoorfloral nurseries. Some of La Jolla’s hotels, likeHotel La Jolla, offer specials on holiday parties,while the community certainly has no shortageof art galleries that make perfect spaces for aclassy event.

GIFTING —Shopping at local vendors oftenmeans more personalized service and a lessstressful experience. A specialty store — Ade-

The U.S. Postal Service in New York Cityhas launched its 102nd annual "OperationSanta" letter-writing program — with secu-rity measures in place to protect the mostlyneedy children.

At Manhattan's James A. Farley Post Office,members of the public started responding toletters from children describing their holidaydream list, often consisting of just necessi-ties. Volunteers must bring an ID and fill outa form that allows them to read mailaddressed to Santa.

Twenty major American cities are partici-pating in the program, with kids asking Santafor warm coats, food, clothes, shoes and toys.The gifts are then mailed to families. Namesand addresses are not visible to donors.

One desperate mother wrote: "I would bevery grateful if you can help us out by send-ing my children some gifts so they have some-

thing to open on Christmas Day."In another letter, a 13-year-old named

Franklin says he has two sisters and a broth-er. "I just wanted to ask if you can help mymom with some presents for my family," theteen wrote.

Children's Santa letters may be picked up atpostal branches in 20 American cities thisyear, including New York, Chicago, Washing-ton, San Francisco, Boston, Orlando, Cincin-nati, Philadelphia, Houston and Los Angeles.

In addition, a website dubbed Be An Elf(beanelf.org) offers information.

"There's no middleman or charity," the sitesays. "It's micro-philanthropy, direct from youto a child, when you volunteer in this way."

The postal service in New York City gets atleast 300,000 requests each year, but onlyabout 10 percent are answered, officials say.

This place is fantastic! My fiance went here to buy a tux for himself and to look for rentals for our upcoming wedding. At first we didn’t want to go here because we figured, being in Birdrock, it would bemore on the expensive side. After a terrible experience at another tuxedo shop, we decided to give A Better Deal a try. I am SO happy we did! Not only was the experience far better than where we had been,but the quality of tuxedos are fantastic, and they ended up being cheaper for his groomsmen to rent! Score!

We also had a hiccup and had to push back the wedding after we went in for our first appointment. WhenI called to explain, they were so accomodating and even let us come back to try on different tuxes monthslater even though we had already purchased a tux and it had come in.

I can’t reccomend this place enough. If you are looking for quality service, quality tuxedos, and great prices,check this place out!!
