La Gramática: ER & IR Verbs in the Present Tense Objectives: -SWBAT comprehend the conjugations for ER and IR verbs, noting the differences and similarities between the two, and their relationship to AR verbs -SWBAT conjugate ER and IR verbs in context, practicing their use in written and oral productions of the target language -SWBAT recognize the irregular verb, VER, using it correctly in writing and speaking MI World Languages Standards and Benchmarks: Communication: 1.1.N.RW.b, 1.1.N.RW.c, 1.2.N.L.a, Cultures: Connections: 3.1.N.a Comparisons: 4.1.N.a, 4.1.N.b, 4.1.N.c, 4.1.N.d Communities: 5.2.N.a Rationale: Students have already learned about AR verbs and their conjugations in previous units. However, they do not yet know the conjugations for ER and IR verbs, even though they have been introduced to ER and IR verbs in their new vocabulary. Therefore, students will interact with a PowerPoint on ER & IR verbs, taking notes, filling in question blanks, and predicting answers to form a complete understanding of the last two categories of verb conjugations in Spanish. In comprehending ER & IR verbs in the present tense, students’ understanding of Spanish grammar and their ability to use varied and diverse verbs in both speaking and writing will increase exponentially. The visual aspect of the PowerPoint allows for oral instruction and visual learning in combination, utilizing “waffle” charts, color codes, and a routine format that cements this grammar concept through explicit instruction. In this lesson, the idea that grammar and pragmatics are inextricably linked is present in the fact that students will practice both writing and speaking at different points throughout the PowerPoint, expressing their budding metalinguistic awareness of verb conjugations in Spanish. Copies of the PowerPoint slides (with lines for writing notes on the side) will be printed and ready for any students who might struggle in taking notes, whose IEP allocates this resource, or for any unforeseen circumstance. In this way, all students will be willing and able to actively engage in the lesson. Materials: -PowerPoint: G.ER&IRverbs-present.pptx -Textbook -ER & IR verbs handout Procedures: 1) Tarea de Campaña #2: Review of AR Verbs (10 minutes) a. Announcements and attendance while students are completing TC b. Review answers for TC when students are done c. TC questions: Yo ________ mucho. Assessment: -Check that students are taking notes during the grammar presentation. Active note taking:

o Do students write down what appears on the slides? o Are they at all confused about what notes to take?

Ask probing/predicting questions: o What do you think the conjugations for this verb are? o What similarities do you notice between the conjugations for ER and IR verbs? o Do you notice any connections to the AR verbs we have already learned?

Fill-in-the-blank practice slides: o How many answers did students get correctly? o Does it seem like this new grammar concept is starting to become cemented into their

understanding of present tense verb conjugations? o Are students ready and able to successfully complete the homework for the night?

-Homework Check the next day for a grade.

o Did students do the conjugations correctly? o Were there any areas/ideas that they seemed particularly confused by?
