Professor Ken Baldwin is the Director of the Energy Change Institute at the ANU, and Deputy Director of the Research School of Physics and Engineering. Since 2011 he was a member of the Project Steering Committee for the Australian Energy Technology Assessment (AETA) produced by the Bureau of Resources and Energy Economics (BREE). Professor Baldwin is an inaugural ANU Public Policy Fellow, and winner of the 2004 Australian Government Eureka Prize for Promoting Understanding of Science, for his role in initiating and championing “Science meets Parliament”. In 2007, Professor Baldwin was awarded the W.H. Beattie Steele Medal, the highest honour of the Australian Optical Society. In 2010 he was awarded the Barry Inglis Medal by the National Measurement Institute for excellence in precision measurement. Professor Baldwin is a Fellow of the American Physical Society, the Institute of Physics (UK), the Optical Society of America and the Australian Institute of Physics.

Greg Bourne graduated with honours in chemistry at the University of Western Australia. With BP he spent 30+ years living and working in the UK, Middle East, USA, Canada, Ireland, Brazil, China, Venezuela and Australia. For two years he was Special Adviser on Energy and Transport to Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. He returned to Australia in 1999 as Regional President. He was CEO of WWF-Australia for six years and later a non-executive director of Carnegie Wave Energy. Greg is now Chair of the Board of ARENA, a young, dynamic organisation specifically tasked with helping to build the technical and commercial infrastructure needed to capitalise on Australia’s renewable energy endowment. Its work is centred on building tomorrow’s energy infrastructure and delivering a more diverse and affordable energy future for Australia. He was awarded the Centenary Medal for services to the environment and an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Western Australia for services to international business.

Kobad Bhavnagri is the Head of Australia for Bloomberg New Energy Finance’s and developed the company’s economic modelling expertise in solar PV and the Large-scale Renewable Energy Target.

Kobad has worked in the energy and finance industries since 2003 as an engineer, management consultant and analyst. He has an academic background in engineering and environmental studies and specialises in energy economics, markets and policy.

The Hon Mark Butler MP | Shadow Minister for Environment, Climate Change and Water

H.E Mr Manuel Cacho holds a Degree in Law as well as an International Studies Certificate from the Spanish Diplomatic School. The Ambassador joined the Foreign Service in 1977 and served as Secretary at the Embassies of Spain in the Democratic Republic of Congo (1977-1979), the Philippines (1979-1981) and Chile (1983-1986); and as Counsellor in the United Kingdom (1986-1990). Moreover, in 1995 was appointed Consul General of Spain in Jerusalem. He held the position of Deputy Director General at the Diplomatic Information Office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of Spain from 1993 to 1995, and from 2005 to 2008 he was appointed Spokesperson with the rank of Director General. H.E Mr Manuel Cacho has been Ambassador of Spain to the Federal Republic of Nigeria (1998- 2001), the Syrian Arab Republic (2001-2005) and the Republic of Cuba (2008-2012). Back to Madrid in 2012, he was appointed Secretary General for the Asian-Pacific Foundations, including the Spain-Australia Council Foundation, and from 2013 on, he served as Ambassador on Special Mission for Spain’s successful Candidature to the UN Security Council 2015-2016.

Mark was elected to Federal Parliament in 2007 representing the electorate of Port Adelaide. His career in Parliament has so far included; Parliamentary Secretary for Health, Minister for Mental Health and Ageing, Minister for Social Inclusion, Minister Assisting the Prime Minister on Mental Health Reform, Minister for Housing and Homelessness, Minister for Climate Change, Environment, Heritage and Water.

Mark is currently the Shadow Minister for the Environment, Climate Change and Water.Before entering Parliament, Mark worked for 15 years in the Liquor Hospitality and Miscellaneous Union (LHMU) including 11 years as State Secretary and was awarded the Centenary Medal in 2003 for services to trade unionism.

In 1997, Mark was elected President of the ALP in South Australia, and was a Member of the ALP National Executive and National Executive Committee from 2000 to 2014. He was elected National ALP President in 2015. He has also served as a member of several government and private sector boards including the South Australian Social Inclusion Board and the SA Tourism Commission.

Iván is a Structured Finance executive in the engineering and construction firm Elecnor, where he is engaged in the analysis, structuring, valuation, financing and execution of investments in infrastructure and energy projects, including natural gas pipelines, wind farms, solar plants and transmission lines.

Iván joined Elecnor from COFIDES, the Spanish Development Finance Institution, where he was an investment manager responsible for analyzing and structuring debt and equity participations in investment projects located in emerging countries, and where he was also an investment committee member of EFP, one of the funds participated by COFIDES whose portfolio is located in Sub-Saharan Africa. His career commenced at an Investment Banking firm where he collaborated on midmarket M&A deals and worked both at the New York and Frankfurt offices. Iván holds the CFA professional designation and a B.A. (Hons) in European Business Studies from the University of Portsmouth, and was a Madrid Chamber of Commerce scholar in the Czech Republic.

Paul Curnow heads Baker & McKenzie’s Asia Pacific Renewable Energy Industry Focus Group. Paul is ranked as one of Australia’s foremost energy lawyers and globally as a market leader in climate change.

He specialises in renewable energy, power and environmental project development and mergers & acquisition transactions. Paul’s key focus is advising on all issues associated with the development and financing of renewable and clean energy projects and global carbon and emissions trading markets.

He has worked for over 12 years on Australian and cross border transactions. He has particular experience advising European companies on their renewable energy investments in Australia.

Ben Ferguson is Director, State Energy Market Development at the Victorian Department of Economic Development, Jobs, Transport and Resources. Ben manages a number of teams in the Energy Sector Development Branch of the Department, including the group responsible for the development of Victoria’s Renewable Energy Policy Framework. Ben has worked at the Commonwealth and Victorian Treasury Departments, including in Executive roles responsible for energy, water, resources and environment policy. He was also previously the Senior Economist at the Business Council of Australia.

Since relocating to Australia 9 years ago, Charles has worked for CBA with a focus on energy and renewables. In this time he has worked on numerous transactions including project, acquisition and corporate financings.

Prior to joining the Bank, Charles worked for ConocoPhillips in London for 10 years with roles in finance, business development, project finance and origination / trading covering the energy and renewables sectors.

Charles is a Chartered Management Accountant and holds a Bachelor of Science from Sheffield University, UK.

Sylvia Fernandez was appointed President of La Camara in July 2014 after serving on the board since 2012. Sylvia is a partner in a national law firm specialising in litigation and dispute resolution.

Warwick Forster is the Energy Markets Manager at Union Fenosa Wind Australia, a wind farm developer owned by Spanish Utility, Gas Natural Fenosa. He has eighteen years of experience in energy markets in Australia, covering both gas and electricity.

Whilst his recent role has been to find commercial opportunities for the development of wind farms, his prior experience has covered generation, retail and trading for a number of Australian utilities including Babcock & Brown Power, Alinta, Aurora Energy, Energex, Ergon and ACTEWAGL. He earned degrees in Engineering and Economics, from the Australian National University, and has a Masters in Business Administration from La Trobe University.

Andrea had been working in the renewable sector since 2005. He was formerly dedicated to Kyoto Protocol Clean Development Mechanism renewable projects, mainly landfill gas, and then moved to solar sector. Andrea has gained significant experience by joining FRV, an international development platform which has fully developed and commissioned more than half a Gigawatt of solar assets, both PV and CSP between Europe, the US, Latin America, Middle East and Australia, including the 20MWac Royalla solar farm in Canberra and the 56MWac Moree Solar Farm in northern NSW. Andrea had witnessed the impressive growth of Utility Scale PV and the consolidation of the industry in Europe and in the US and since joining the FRV Australian branch as a Country Manager in 2011, Andrea has been leading the company operations in Australia and Asia Pacific region.

Dr Joel Gilmore is a Senior Manager at EY, where he advises industry and government on transitioning the electricity sector to a low emissions future. Joel has particular expertise in detailed technical and economic modelling of electricity systems, analysing policy and market design options for the integration of renewable generation into the grid, and evaluating the role of emerging technologies in the market. Recent projects have included modelling the costs and benefits of the Renewable Energy Target for the Clean Energy Council, developing price forecasts for Australian electricity markets, and assisting the Colombian government to develop policies to support energy efficiency. He has also participated in international working groups with other industry leaders on the future of electricity systems, and contributed to several book chapters on related topics.

James Harding is Head of Business Development in Australia for Abengoa Solar. Abengoa Solar is a world leader in concentrating solar thermal energy technology, with more than 1.6GW of solar power capacity in operation, and 500MW under construction and late stage development in Europe, the Americas, the Middle East and Africa.

James has 30 years’ experience in the international project business, having been involved with the development, financing and implementation of major capital projects around the world. He is a director of the Australian Solar Thermal Energy Association, and most recent chair of the Clean Energy Council’s concentrating solar thermal directorate.

Amy Kean is Australia’s first Renewable Energy Advocate, a position established to support the NSW Renewable Energy Action Plan. The Advocate has been appointed to work closely with NSW communities and industry to facilitate the development and generation of renewable energy. Amy has worked in the renewable energy industry for 15 years in policy and industry both nationally and internationally. She has a deep understanding of policy, finance and the technology deployment.

Previously, she established the Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Partnership (REEEP) in the region at the Clean Energy Council. She has also worked at Pinpoint/ Mastercard, Hydro Tasmania, NSW SEDA and Accenture. Amy has a Bachelor of Science & Arts and completing a Masters of Environmental Law. She is a fellow of the Centre for Sustainability Leadership. Amy is a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and on the board of the Duke of Edinburgh Award. Amy has 2 young children, Laili and Ben.

Giovanni holds an engineering degree and a post-graduate diploma in Renewable Energy Technology and another in Processes Innovation. For the past 15 years, Giovanni has been leading several innovative technology projects to support distribution of electricity and gas and power generation, in international energy companies as Enel, Enel Green Power, Cambridge Water and Gas, Endesa, Union Fenosa Gas, Gas Natural Fenosa, in Europe and in Latin America. He is now responsible for the Energy Market Business Development in Indra in Australia.

Phil is an economic policy advisor and senior executive with extensive public sector experience. In his current role Phil is responsible for delivering key Queensland Government commitments around electricity pricing, consumer policy and renewable energy. In particular, Phil is supporting an independent inquiry into a state-based renewable energy target and leading a renewable energy reverse auction. Previously Phil was a Director of Economic Policy in the Department of the Premier and Cabinet and had earlier roles with Queensland Treasury and the United Nations Development Programme. Phil has a master of public policy and is completing a master of economics and finance from the University of Queensland.

Sean is a seasoned practitioner with more than 20 years’ international experience in banking and finance, major projects, mergers and acquisitions and private equity in emerging and developed markets. Sean is well connected in the finance industry and understands the needs of major projects to ensure they are bankable in the current financing environment.

Dan Sturrock is a senior member of the ARENA Transactions and Business Development team based in Sydney.

Prior to joining ARENA in 2013, Dan worked for PricewaterhouseCoopers and Macquarie Bank in a range of corporate finance roles with a focus on renewable energy since 2007. Dan has worked on a range of projects and technologies in Australia and internationally and is currently responsible for developing and implementing ARENA’s large-scale solar PV competitive funding round.

Mr Theau has 25 years’ experience in large transactions involving infrastructure and a range of renewable energy projects, including solar. At the Clean Energy Finance Corporation (CEFC), Mr Theau has led the successful financing of a number of CEFC’s innovative renewable energy projects, helping to develop the Corporation’s growing portfolio. Prior to the CEFC, Mr Theau has worked in Europe and Australia in infrastructure finance, funds management, asset management, banking and investment banking, with Hastings Funds Management, BNP Paribas, Macquarie Bank, Westpac and UBS.

Wes Stein leads CSIRO’s Solar Group of 40 engineers and scientists, and established, and now manages, the National Solar Energy Centre. He has developed and led over $50M of CSP projects for CSIRO over the last several years and has a key responsibility in setting strategic direction. He is Australia’s member of the IEA SolarPACES Executive Committee. He has authored journal articles, book chapters and co-edited a book on Advances in CSP, and is involved in a number of international scientific panels. He is a certified chartered engineer and registered professional engineer in NSW, with a background in the power industry.

Catherine is the Industry Development Manager of RenewablesSA in the South Australian Government with responsibility for renewable energy and carbon management investment. She has facilitated the passage through Parliament of new legislation to enable renewable energy investment, the implementation of strong targets, and the introduction of a package of land-use planning reforms to support wind energy development.

Catherine has previously worked in both the NGO and private sectors, notably for BHP Billiton on their Olympic Dam Expansion Project where she provided technical assistance and policy advice in relation to sustainability aspects of the Olympic Dam Expansion project.

Mr Williamson has extensive senior executive experience in the private sector and federal, state and local government. He previously held a national commercial and technical position in an ASX 200 company and was Executive Director of the Queensland Environmental

Protection Agency, leading that agency’s regulatory operations across a diverse range of environmental legislation. His qualifications are in applied science and postgraduate qualifications in management.

Mr Williamson is the Executive General Manager of the Scheme Entry and Entitlement Division, which administers elements of the Renewable Energy Target and Emissions Reduction Fund.

Stephen heads’ up the national Infrastructure Advisory Group for one of Australia’s largest engineering consulting firms. Over the past 18 years Stephen has worked across all areas of the renewable power sector in infrastructure development for private equity firms, government project facilitation and more recently as a consultant. In his current role Stephen works to reduce energy and carbon emissions for major projects across Australia with specific focus on larger energy users. Stephen has played an ongoing advisory role to organisations such as ARENA on technical due diligence for emerging technologies including Solar PV, Geothermal, Battery Storage and alternative generation technologies.
