HEALTHY WAY LA (HWLA) – FOUNDATION FOR HEALTH REFORM

HWLA is a foundation for health reform preparation in Los Angeles County

HWLA provides comprehensive health care services; not health insurance

Many, but not all, uninsured adult residents are eligible for HWLA Los Angeles County resident Documented citizenship or permanent legal resident (5

years) Income at or below 133% FPL annually ($15,282 for 1

person) 19 – 64 years old Ineligible for Medi-Cal (including pregnant women)

Approx. 246,000 uninsured adults are enrolled in HWLA

HWLA members will automatically be enrolled into Medi-Cal on January 1, 2014

DHS two-pronged strategy: Continued enrollment into HWLA Seamless transition to Medi-Cal (health

insurance)

Federal health reform does not extend health insurance to everyone in the United States Those not eligible include undocumented persons,

those with religious exemptions, those incarcerated etc.

If a person is not eligible for health insurance, they can still receive health care services throughout the County: Community health centers and clinics Department of Health Services hospitals and clinics Local hospitals (private & public) for emergency
