From the Specification

Network and Flows

• Network are models that show how different places are linked together. E.g tube map.

• Life expectancy on the tube here

Network and Flows

• Points on a network are called nodes. • A point on a global network map that is very well connected

is called a hub. • Connections between hubs and nodes are called flows. • Flows are movements of the following;

– Money (electronic transfer for stock exchanges, credit cards, etc.)– Raw Materials (commodities such as food, minerals, etc.) – Manufactured goods and services– Information (internet introduced real time communication and

communities grown e.g. facebook) – People (barriers still exist to migration mainly political ones)

Interconnected and Interdependent

• Interconnected – Trade and migration flows have increased due to technology, market forces and political decisions by nations to open their boarders more. E.g. Poland and the UK are more interconnected than ever before.

• Interdependent – what happens in one place effects what happens in another place. People and companies are more and more dependant on each other. E.g. Nissan sales drop in Asia, Sunderland’s Nissan car plant could make people redundant or even close the factory.

Look at the A3 Map sheet, this shows the many other ways in which countries are ‘connected’ and ‘switched on’.Complete the activities

Case Study: Easyjet

• Make a poster on the case study of Easyjet (p115), focusing on how Easyjet has made the world a more interconnected place.
