Population distribution and density

• Population distribution:– Where people are living in an area (e.g. country)

Where does everyone on earth live?

Page 8: L1 ap where is everybody

Population Density –An average population figure for an area (e.g. Country). Normally measured per km².

Where does everyone on earth live?

Does this map show population density or distribution?

Different reasons cause people to live in different areas and these can be split into both physical and human factors.

What factors effect where people live?

Where does everyone on earth live?

FACTOR HIGH DENSITY LOW DENSITY

Physical FactorsWhere would you build a city?

Physical Factors Affecting Population Density

a. Physical Factors High Density Low Density

1. Relief (shape and height of land)

Low land which is flat e.g. Ganges Valley in India

High land that is mountainous e.g. Himalayas

2. Climate Areas with temperate climates tend to be densely populated as there is enough rain and heat to grow crops e.g. UK

Areas with extreme climates of hot and cold tend to be sparsely populated e.g. the Sahara Desert

Human Factors

Page 16: L1 ap where is everybody

Where would you rather live? Why do cities grow?

• Political factors

Page 17: L1 ap where is everybody

Where would you rather live?

• Job opportunities have encouraged city growth

Page 18: L1 ap where is everybody

Human Factors Affecting Population Density

b. Human Factors High Density Low Density 1. Political Countries with stable

governments tend to have a high population density e.g. Singapore

Unstable countries tend to have lower population densities as people migrate e.g. Afghanistan.

2. Economic Good job opportunities encourage high population densities, particularly in large cities in MEDCs and LEDCs around the world.

Limited job opportunities cause some areas to be sparsely populated e.g. Amazon Rainforest

YOUR TURN!• TASK:1. Look at your A4 sheet and

write down why people live where they live.

2. Use the ‘interactive climate map’ on line to help you.

3. Also use the map that you had at the start of the lesson to see what the population density is in the country
